i want to move my itunes library playlists, counts, all that bs from my old pc to my new imac please help me. i have followed all sorts of other plans and everything comes up incomplete i have ilink and senuti and an ipod is there a way to drag everyhhing off of my ipod into itunes and live happily ever after. my ipod is a perfect catalog of music can you tell me how to easily move everything off of my ipod into itunes . i will be your best friend. many thanks

To answer your questions.
There really is no space for additional PCI.
3 PCI cards installed which handle all the audio processing and I/O for the Pro Tools system. I think there is 4 PCI? No? I intend to use the final as a host for SCSI HDD's of which I have a rackmount Array.
Being that bandwidth IS limited, I'd rather it be dedicated to Pro Tools, rather than system resources. Even if it means rediculous write times I guess. No hope then?
The 40 GB is not a problem, as There are only 2 pieces of software I have installed on the machine, and they are both Pro Tools related, that's all I need. It's just there to run the OS and Software. I have a lot of free space. I also don't save anything to the 40, it all goes to the external or to the Audio drive. (Pro Tools writes to a seperate 'Audio' hard drive to better perform, rather than recording to the system drive, it will, but doesn't like to)
So I take it my MDD is only FW400? I know it's dual bootable if that tells you anything.
Just got your edit, another cat just told me about Patchburn on another forum. Just downloaded it, will try it later this week. He uses the same Pro Tools system as this and it works for him. It's a 3rd party patch, and while the Pioneer 155 is not really 3rd party, I suppose it is being it is not native to the machine. We'll see. He's using a 111 without issue.
How can I 'test' the battery. Very well may not be ok. Probably not ok. when it sits off for a long time it boots up with the system date all jacked.

Hard drive not recognized on startup after 10.4.6 update

This is hurting my brain.
I updated to 10.4.6 from the Software Update that popped up today. Upon restart it "froze" on the greyscreen with the Apple logo. (didn't make it to the spinning wheel). I even let it sit for a good 10 minutes, hoping it would snap out of it
Booted with install DVD (10.4.3) and ran First Aid. Here it see's the drive and found no problems, also ran repair permissions, which found a few on a HP printer driver installed ages ago. Now when I restart it just gives me the friggin flashing folder with a questions mark/finder icon.
Running disk warrior found a few things to repair, but still the same flashing folder with question mark
Next I popped in a backup hd with 10.4.5 on it, it loads up and sees the main hd. Huh?
So i backed up the important stuff and did an archive and install on the main hd. But still get the flashing folder w/question mark. GAH.
I rather not reformat as my backup hd is only 30 GB free and I have 80GB of data i need on the main hd!
Help?!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I tried that too when I was able to boot up with my backup HD. Actually I tried it again just for kicks. And now I get the the spinning wheel with the apple logo and does that for a good 5 minutes, then the apple logo changes to the circle with a slash.
At least I can stil see the drive when I boot up the backup hd. I suppose I'll just backup the files to dvd hmm 50gb divided by 4.7... 11 discs...

How can I view more than one result on the screen when I search for apps? eg I search for my hobby and there are over 1500 results - one result per screen - do I have to swipe 1500 times to see them all?

10.8.2 Update Failed

I tried to download and install the 10.8.2 update but received an error message stating that the file could not be expanded. Now the update does not appear in the App Store under updates. I presume that the file is still on my iMac so the App Store thinks I already have the download. How do I delete the downloaded file in order to redownload?

I ran into precisely the same issue. I had an iMac that went belly up. Apple said it would replace it, but couldn't with an iMac because it awaits the newer version; older iMacs are not in stock. Instead, they gave me a Mac mini and monitor. The mini came preinstalled with 10.8.1. Naturally, I went to upgrade it to 10.8.2 -- and update the iPhoto and Aperture apps, which wouldn't update without 10.8.2 because it had to redo the libraries to sync with 10.8.2. (Mind you, I had successfully updated all of this on my MacBook Pro JUST before my iMac went belly up.)
Well, after MUCH MUCH aggravation and wasted time, Apple Care support put me onto a higher-level tech. Turns out that Apple discovered a flaw in 10.8.2 and essentially stopped supporting it. So, you may have gotten lucky just prior to that discovery -- as I did with my MacBook Pro -- but not after they found the flaw. The Apple Care tech could NOT say when that would be. He did help me create new temporary iPhoto and Aperture libraries that I can access if I hold down the option key if I launch. (Dates, keywords, faces, etc., didn't come along with the strategy, which he told me would be the case.) But I can't otherwise access iPhoto or Aperture in regular mode until the update is fixed or replaced with 10.8.3.
I don't know why Apple continues to show the 10.8.2 update (or if it does) but that's the issue. Don't hurt your brain trying and trying again to make the thing work now.
P.S. It's possible that 10.8.2 works on some models, but not on others. I didn't ask him.

Font Smoothing GONE--Help!!!

I'm running 10.6.2, and I pretty much have ZERO font smoothing whenever I ctrl-mouse zoom on any menu, any text, any program. This is on my MacBook Pro (2 years old) that had perfect font smoothing in Leopard.
I've turned off the CRT checkbox in System Preferences—doesn't help
I've used Terminal to run defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 and also tried 2 and 3 and even reverting to defaults—doesn't help
I've used Font Book to validate fonts and remove duplicates (especially after Office 2004 install)—doesn't help
I've also rebooted after all these operations—still almost zilch smoothing on zoom
Even Finder looks AWFUL

That sounds good. A lot of tests to run! Hate to do the new user test, but will if I have to.
I am really leaning toward the Option-Command-"\" having (unintentionally) turned OFF Screen Zoom (under mouse or trackpad) Image Smoothing.
How could it take me so long to learn that there is Font Smoothing, and there is Image Smoothing. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
The Chain of Blame here is so convoluted it hurts my brain.
1. Evernote was trying to reinstall web clipping and/or its Safari plug-in ever since I converted to Snow Leopard. (Massive evidence of this in Console error messages, and they are hilarious: "Can't get Elephant!" and "Can't install icon!" over and over and over again. Just give it up, Evernote!)
2. So one day Evernote's interference with Safari messes up my executing the Option-Command-"\" command to log into my bank (it's normally a 1Password keyboard shortcut that works great in Safari).
3. Option-Command-"\" reverts back to its "normal" designation (turn on/off Screen Zoom (under mouse or trackpad) Image Smoothing).
4. I hit Option-Command-"\" repeatedly, trying to get the 1Password HUD to pop up in Safari. It doesn't.
5. By hitting Option-Command-"\" so many times, I unintentionally turn off Screen Zoom Image Smoothing. Only I don't realize it.
If this theory IS correct, then it's a simple fix!
The lesson learned would be:
System Preferences, Personal, Appearance, Font Smoothing
is a DIFFERENT preference from
System Preferences, Mouse/Trackpad, (Two Fingers), Screen Zoom, Options, Smooth Images
Of course, I'll report back just as soon as my SuperDuper backup finishes and I can try this test.
And if this IS the problem, well, I blame it on the elephant.

Can we have try/catch in a static block in a class?

i have a question about put a try/catch block in a static block in a class to catch exceptions that maybe thrown from using System.xxxx(). in my custom class, i have a static block to initialize some variables using System.xxx(). in case of any error/exception, i need to be able to catch it and let the caller know about it. i tried to put a try/catch block in the static block, and tried to rethrow the exception. but it is not allowed, how would i handle situation like this? thanks for your help and advise in advance.

block, and instead of throwing it out, just set a
static variable to allow checking from outside

Embedding symbols inside symbols that are runtime exported.

I'm attempting to use CS4 (PC/Vista, if that matters) to create a SWF file that will basically act as a "library" of commonly used symbols. This SWF would be loaded at runtime by other SWFs, which could then use the symbols within it, including all art and code assets.

However, I'm having a strange issue...
My "Clock" symbol (it's a class defined in an external .as file, which extends MovieClip) has an internal "SecondHand" (also a symbol, but just a plain old MovieClip, no external .as file). I have exported both these symbols for runtime sharing as explained on the above page. And put the resulting SWF up on the web, so other SWFs can download it. (This is what I'm considering the "library" SWF.)
Then in my second SWF, I follow the directions as explained under "Link a shared asset to a destination document by entering the identifier and URL". In other words, I make a new symbol, right-click it and select "Properties", check "import for runtime sharing", type in the correct URL of the "library" SWF, and type in the correct Class name of my "clock" symbol from the library SWF. And also make sure the name of the symbol matches the name of the symbol in the "library" SWF.
I run the second SWF, and it does manage to load up the "library" SWF (I can verify this happens in the webserver logs), and the clock appears on the screen - complete with a second hand. However, I then get an error like this:
"Clock.as, Line 29: Access of undefined property secondHand."
Clock.as:29 is:
secondHand.rotation = (secs % 60) * 6;
It's worth noting here that "secondHand" is an instance of the symbol "SecondHand". This instance was created when I made the "library" SWF in CS4. I double-clicked the "Clock" symbol in the library pane to edit it. Then I dragged a copy of the symbol "SecondHand" into that Clock. Then I used the "Properties" tab to make the name of that instance "secondHand". In other words, I probably did it exactly way you'd expect someone to do this. Nothing fancy or weird, as far as I can tell.
So... there's something very strange going on here. Somehow, my "secondHand" isn't being created when the "Clock" symbol is instantiated. My assumption was that since I dragged and dropped the symbol while I was editing the "Clock" MC, the code to create the "secondHand" instance would get attached to frame1 of the "Clock" symbol. But evidently not...
The thing that really hurts my brain, though is this: if the "secondHand" instance is never being created.... how come the second hand shows up on-screen? I mean sure, there could be some "cache as bitmap" stuff going on behind the scenes, but even so that just seems weird. The loading SWF obviously isn't creating the secondHand object. And yet you can see said object right there on-screen!
I've tried many searches for many variations of "flash runtime import symbol loading", but found nothing relevant. The above linked doc page just blithely assumes that everything will magically work out - as most of the Adobe docs so cutely do.
So, questions...
A) Am I doing something obviously wrong?
B) Has anyone else seen this before? (Known bug?)
C) Does anyone know of a workaround?
If anyone wants .FLAs/SWFs demonstrating the problem, I'm happy to provide. Just ask.
It's the weekend, but I'll try and check back on this topic once or twice a day just in case anyone answers.

After a long, frustrating day of trying every possible thing I could think of, there doesn't seem to be a way to make this work correctly at compile time. I finally settled on doing an end-run around CS4 at run time.
in Clock.as:

This uses DisplayObjectContainer's getChildByName() function to walk the display list and find the object with the given name.
It's possible you may need to delay doing this until *after* the Clock has been added to the stage. If that's how you have to use it, then put a handler on the Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE event and don't do the above code until you're sure the object has been added to the stage.

Why is the outcome of the envelope detection vi different when run within a for loop

Given that signal 1 and signal 2 are identical what could cause the outputs at appended array and appended array 2 to be different. The output at appended array 2 comes out incorrectly. Given only one band specification the subvi works in the loop. With more than 1 band specification the output from the loop is not correct.

Financial Reporting Studio - Suppress Shared Members During Entity Prompt

I am trying to create a Financial Reporting Studio report where the entity members that are displayed as a prompt only reflect the entities the user has access to with only one occurrence in the list. I have tried the following scenarios with no luck.
In Workspace, the Financial Reporting Preference, the Setup User POV option "Member Selection Displays" is set to "Only Members I Can Access" and not "All Members Regardless of Access".
The Financial Report is set up so that the user is prompted for the Entity so they can select multiple entities to run the report.
This works fine, except this is also displaying the shared members in the alternate hierarchies when responding to the Entity prompt.
As part of Defining the prompt, I have included the main entity structure in the "Choices List" in hopes that the shared members wouldn't display as an option to select, but this ends up displaying all of the entities in the hierarchy overriding what is the Financial Reporting Preference (acts like "All Members Regardless of Access"). I have also tried the Union of "Suppress shared members" and "Same level as" a level zero entity, but I'm still seeing all of the members of the main entity hierarchy, rather than a list of entities the user has access to.
Is there a way to display all of the entities only once that a user has access to during a prompt for a report? I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!!

1) Write a report against the Planning (I could be wrong about you using Planning as you specify Essbase, but the question is in the Planning board) tables to get this information. I don't know how to do it, but I'm guessing with some SQL gyrations it should be possible.
2) Stick an attribute against hierarchies 1 & 2 and report on them that way. You the designer already know that they are related. More maintenance on the front end, but a surefire way to get the member list out.

Why doesn't Photoshop work like Motion?

Hi there, I'd like to know if I'm alone on this:
Motion is far more intuitive than PS.
I use PS often but in many cases I end up using Motion to make stills with elements such as text etc. Click and drag, visible filters which can be tweeked inmediately, the HUD etc. All those features make Motion a for more logical program. And if I'm not alone: wouldn't there be a place for a photoshop-like application for Apple to develop in Motion-style?

Well, while we're comparing Apple and Photoshop programs that are kind of, maybe a little similar but aren't used for the same functions - does anyone wanna bring up Motion and Flash - ungghh Flash makes my brain hurt and then I go and sob in the corner for awhile until I go back to Motion like a lost puppy. I think Motion is wayyyy more intuitive than just about any Adobe product but Adobe has some great features - so you just have to be willing to hurt your brain a little. But Flash......seriously.....can't we just use layers and groups?

QuickTime in Flash

Hi, I've got a Quicktime movie file that requires being

Reporting on shared members financial reporting studio

We have multiple hierarchies in our entity dimension where the members are shared between hierarchies. Is there a way to create a report that shows the intersections of hierarchies. ie- hierarchy a has products 1, 2, 3,4. hierarchy b has products 1,2,5,6. I need a report that shows the intersection of the two hierarchies- products 1 and 2. this is using essbase in financial reporting studio.

Applescript/automator

I've just recently started messing with Automator, since the scirpts just hurt my brain, but is there a way that I can create a script/action and attach it to a folder so that whenever a file is placed therein, the (automator) action will be performed on the file?

I made a folder to save wallpapers from various websites, and then created a workflow to resize the contents and move a copy to a separate folder. After that I tried creating a workflow to delete the contents of the starting folder, and it wouldn't work. I created two separate workflows, one for resizing/moving images, and then one simply for deleting the contents of the original folder, and I can't get the two to run in one workflow.
What am I doing wrong? Is there some way around this?

MacBook Pro 15" Hitachi HDD makes Low Frequency Sound!

I've noticed from some other boards that the Hitachi HDD drive on 15 inch MacBook pro's, create some sort of low frequency noise that can be soothing to some, and very annoying to others.
I have noticed this sound comming from my Mac, and frankly, it hurts my brain.
I want to contact Apple store to see if they can fix the problem, but really, I wondered if there is any diagnostic or repair i can do at home to fix it.
Hopefully someone could answer my Question,

If this is just a normal noise that the drive makes, There may not be much to be done other than to replace it with a different brand of drive. If you think the noise might be abnormal, you could check out the overall health of the drive with S.M.A.R.T. Utility:

Instead of removing the music from the cloud or the iTunes library why not shuffle your music using a Smart Playlist which excludes the holiday music, or tracks that are not checked. For example, use this very simple Smart Playlist:
