Migration of CUCM on UCS C series to UCS B series.

Planning a move from UCS rack servers to newer blades. I was wondering what the Cisco recommended method would be. I see allot of people saying that you should vMotion things over but also that there are allot of caveats with it. I have also heard some people recommend Cisco Prime Collaboration Deployment but I can't quite figure out how that would work. So I thought I would ask the community for it's opinion on the subject.
CUCM is on version 10.5, nothing will be patched or upgraded in the move just the guest OS will be moved over. Also, these platforms do not share storage, the C series have the guest stored local and the B series will have a SAN.

Yup, there it is in black and white, thanks.
By chance you wouldn't have a link to the proper method for moving a cluster do you? I know you move the pub first then the subs but I can't find a page that details the process.

  • Migrating from MCS7845 to UCS C210M2 Server for CUCM8.0

Customer Alpha has CUCM and Nortel.
(I.) Following is the CUCM Cluster breakup:
       - Location X: PUB, SUB1, SUB2
       - Location Y: SUB3
       - Location Z: SUB4, SUB5
(II.) Location Z, Block-A has 10,000 users on Nortel which need to be moved to CUCM8.0 for which the following two new SUBSCRIBER's added to the existing CUCM Cluster:
        - SUB6, SUB7
        - SUB6 & SUB7 will be installed on a UCS C210M2 server
        - Customer will be shipped with two UCS C210M2 with dual  quad core 5640 processor
    2.In Location Z, currently SUB4 and SUB5 are on MCS 7845 server.
Need to Migrate SUB4 and SUB5 on UCS C210M2 Server from MCS7845.
This way, Location Z with SUBSCRIBERS(SUB4, SUB5, SUB6 and SUB7) will migrate to UCS C210M2 server platform.
Rest of the locations namely- LocationsX & LocationY will continue running on MCS7845 platform.
Need to understand the Migration strategy (point wise) keeping in mind, the PUB is in LocationX still on MCS and only the SUB- SUB4, SUB5, SUB6 and SUB7 will be on UCS platform in locationZ.
Please share the steps required to perform this type of Migration.
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi Gajanan,
    Thanks for your prompt reply.
SUB4 Migration from MCS7845 to UCS C210M2 server involves the following steps:
Take SUB4 out of the Network.
Install SUB4 on UCS C210-M2 server, just as a fresh install  and ensure the same SUB4 name is assigned on UCS what its there on the MCS7845 platform.
While installation of SUB4, it ask for PUB details like IP Address, assign the reqd. details.
Migrate the users assigned to SUB4 with SUB5 for the time being, this step should have been performed in the beginning.
Once the installation is complete, you can re-install the users from SUB5 to SUB4.
Database replication will take place from PUB
Please confirm if Step4 is required or when we take the Backup using DRS of SUB4 and after the installation of SUB4 on UCS C210, restore the backup on SUB4 and then it would populate the users/phones  that were tregistered with SUB4 on MCS 7845 platform on to UCS C210M2 platform.
Do we need to take DRS of the PUB or SUB4?
Can you please put the steps in the correct order.....
Follow the same steps fro SUB5 Migration from MCS7845 to UCS C210M2 server platform.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Does migration to CUCM 8.6 to 9.1 requires aditional Money?

    Hi pals!
We just completed migration to CUCM 8.6 a year ago, we are now (we want to) moving to 9.1, we have a question, if it requires aditional money $$$$ (license), por for upgrade or just a minor patch.
    Also.
Does it also requires CUC 9.1?
Does it also requires CUPS 9.1 too?
I just read the quick guide to migration and I have a loot of questions, my Cisco Parthner is really busy right now with another projects, so I Think i just get the point of this topic.
    another BIG question.
When will version 10 be releaded (more less)?
I would better wait for version 10 instead version 9.1
Can you provide some interesting links?
I appreciate your time for your response, and I thank to you in advance.
    regads.
    john.

    John
You don't need to pay any money for any major CUCM upgrade as long as you have active UCSS on it.  If as part of the migration to version 8.6 you purchased UCSS you are covered, otherwise you will need to pay for every major upgrade.
If you did buy UCSS then you can simply request the upgrade vie the PUT upgrade portal.

  • Migrating from CUCM 8.6 to CUCM 10.0 - Do I have to upgrade presence as well?

    Hello Raees,
I've got a question regarding the Migration from CUCM 8.6 to 1.0, I went through the below "Ask the Expert" article.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/12103966/ask-expert-cisco-unified-communications-manager-cucm-version-100
My question is, the CUCM 10.0 upgrade mentions the following on page 22
"Refresh upgrade of Unified Communications Manager nodes only
Complete the high-level tasks listed in this section when you want to perform a refresh upgrade of only the
Unified Communications Manager nodes in your network. When you upgrade Unified Communications
Manager nodes without upgrading IM and Presence nodes, ensure that the installed version of the IM and
Presence Service is compatible with the new version of the Unified Communications Manager software."
I would only like to Upgrade the CUCM nodes but the client is using Presence 8.6 as well, would I have to upgrade Presence 8.6 to something else as well or can I just upgrade to CUCM 10.0 and the presence 8.6 would work with it, if I have to upgrade Presence as well then what version of Presence would I have to upgrade to and for the "Refresh Upgrade for Presence" can you mention the SKU that I got to get off the Product Upgrade Tool.
Since it's going to be a Refresh Upgrade for CUCM from 8.6 to 10.0 can you as well provide me with the SKU for the upgrade that I got to purchase, I can see two of them as follows:
    UCM-10.X-SW-K9-XU=
CUCM Software Version 10.X for PUT Only, Export Unrestricted
    UCM-10.X-SW-K9=
CUCM Software Version 10.X for PUT Only
    Thanks

Thank you for the reply Chris,
I have a few more questions with regards to what you mentioned in your reply, I'd be glad if you could clarify:
I have not dealt with IMP before...
    1) is it like a plugin that runs on CUCM instead of a full fledged server or is it a stand alone server like CUPS (just renamed/rebranded).... I have till date been dealing with CUPS as a stand alone server that integrates with CUCM via the CUCM -> System-> Application Server Option.
    2) If it's a plug-in then how would the upgrade be done from the CUPS Stand Alone to this IMP that runs within the CUCM Server or would it be a fresh installation or some activation of services within CUCM... and if it's a stand alone server then what Upgrade Image do I need to upgrade CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0 or 10.5.
I'm sorry but the upgrade path for CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0/10.5 is not clear for me, could you help me understand the migration for CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0/10.5..... could you as well advise any documentation that shows detailed steps for the upgrade from CUPS 8.6.4 to IMP 10.0/10.5... the CUCM upgrade is clear to me from the Upgrade Guide.
    Thank you

  • Upgrade Call Manager from 8.5(1) to 10.5(1) and migrate from MCS to UCS...

We are upgrading UCM from 8.5(1) to 10.5(1) and migrating from MCS to UCS. We used UCM 8.5 OVA (7500 user) and migrated to UCS.
Once migrated to UCS we upgraded UCM to 10.5(1). We wanted to use OVA to accommodate 10,000 users, hence took backup of 10.5(1) cluster and installed new servers with new 10.5(1) OVA (10,000 users).
While doing DRS restore, system we were not able to perform a restore. It seems UCM is not recognizing the XML file. It is strange as we took the back from UCM 10.5(1) and trying to restore same version, only difference is upgrade was done with 7500 user OVA and we are now trying to install 10,000 user OVA.
Has anyone run into similar issue? any help will be great.
    Thank You.

This thread is 5 months old but doesn't seem resolved...
I ran into this same scenario last week. Was using the same SFTP server for backups and restores during migration from 7.1(5) to 10.5 and during final rebuild/restore of the "to-be" production 10.5 Publisher, the DRS server was unresponsive and blamed the Master Agent or SFTP server. I had restarted Master and Local agent repeatedly, and regenerated ipsec certs to no avail.
TAC suggested I try a different SFTP server (which I already had, with the same files), and try deleting the .xml files that were included with the backup (drfComponent.xml and processhost.xml). I installed TitanFTP, per TAC's recommendation, deleted the processhost.xml file, regenerated the ipsec certificate one last time, restarted DRF Master, and then DRF Agent, and was able to start a DRS Restore.
Try the above process if you're still having issues.

  • PXE Errors - new install of CUCM on UCS C series servers

    Hi All
I'm in a middle of production install of CUCM , CUWL and IM and Presence on Cisco UCS Servers C220 and C240.
Until last friday I borught the CUCM cluster along with CUWL server online and lastly just completed the install of IM and Presence PUB left home.
Then tried logging on Sunday from home via vSphere client unable to connect to these boxes and the webURL's either of apps didn't work.
I presumed something and then tried to gain access via CIMC port and after launching KVM console I see the attached PXE errors.?
I'm not sure why this happend all of a sudden nothing changed in the boot order nor in the network.
Please send me into right direction....this structure I had up and running from last one week and phones registered too.
    Thanks
    Mohammed

Never mind I figured it out myself and you'll surpised how fragile the UCS C series servers are as I was running them on single power supply and the inside hardware was acting weird for this purpose and once I connected the second power supply and rebooted the server the vmware loads and everything is back online.
How strange this issue was ...
    Thanks

  • BE on MCS v7 migrate to BE6000 on UCS

I have a client who has a 100 single MCS server based Business edition running version 7. Currently they are covered under UCCS/ESW nearing the end of this 3 year agreement.
What is the correct migration path to take them from V7 to BE6k on UCS.  Looking possibly to add some redundancy.
Customer has CUCM/Unity Connection/Presence/Attendant Console applications.
From the SE session I believe I could
buy 2 50 or 100 user bundles or buy 1 bundle and a
migration bundle for the redundant server with all the software preloaded.
If I purchase 2 50s, this gives the active publisher a total of 100 users during normal operation?
My question is is the migration bundle a deep discounted sku that acknowledges the investment of the existing BE version 7 and MCS hardware, or do I have to go through the technology migration path to get value for the existing hardware and licenses?
Is this even the correct roadmap, from v7 or do I have to first upgrade to v9 on the existing hardware under the UCCS support terms, THEN migrate to UCS hardware?
    Thank you.
    md

    You have mulitple options.
    1.  AS you described in the question, buy two 50 bundles will let you have a publisher with 100 user license, and a subscriber server.
    2. Just buy one starter bundle, and use the MCS server as you back server.  Please check the MCS server is supported in 9.0. In this case, you will need to upgrade the MCS server with 9.0 SW.
The migration program includes mulitples parts:
    1. Migration bundle is discounted with its price just around $1K higher than the listed bare metal server price. and with pre-loaded OS and VMware. It also comes with the free VCS licesnse (5 travelsal license + 10 non travesal ),  5 CC agent license and required VMware license.
    2. Don't need to purchase new license.  Just migrate them. What really matters is the migration discount on license.  With the 9X3 migration promotion, you can migrate you licesnse to BE6000 for $9 per license if 3 year UCSS is purchased.
    3. Use the MCS server as reducndancy server or run other applications.
    4. You don;t nee to upgrade to 9.0 first ro be able to migrate.
We are going to publish a white paper for migration ery soon. Please stay tuned.

  • CUCM on ISR E-Series

Does anyone know if it possible to run CUCM on a ISR E-Series server?  I would make for low cost subscriber at a remote site?

I believe the answer is still no!  It would be a nice solution for small branches though,
    The following are NOT supported:
Cisco or 3rd-party server models that do not satisfy the rules of this policy.
Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers (MCS 7800) regardless of CPU model
Cisco UCS Express (SRE-V 9xx on ISR router hardware)
Cisco UCS E-Series Blade Servers (E14x/16x on ISR router hardware) with CPUs that do not meet Processor policy requirements.
For additional considerations, please see TAC TechNote 115955.

  • Maintenance contracts required for CUCM on UCS

    Hello All,
I have a CUCM Ver 8.5 clustrer running on UCS C210M2 server. I would like to know is there is a single maintenance contract I can purchase from Cisco to cover both UCS hardware and CUCM software. Also CUCM is running on top of VMWare ESX server, should I require to get a separate maintenance for VMWare as well ?
Thanks in advance for the reply.
    Mohsin

First, let me make sure we're using the same terminology before I answer:
Contract - The contract number that is tied to your CCO user ID and your equipment
Maint Agreement - Your hardware or software coverage.
My understanding is that you cannot put your hardware and software on the same agreement for a number of reasons.  But there is no reason that all of your agreements can't be put under the same contract number.  Often, hardware and software will be on seperate POs, etc. and will end up under separate contract numbers, making things a pain.  I would work with your Cisco rep to see if you can combine all of your agreements under a single contract number.  I don't see why it would be an issue.  If they can't do this with existing contracts, then in the future I would talk with my rep about ensuring that all future purchases get tied to the same contract number.

  • Update hadrware resources for CUCM in UCS

    Hello all,
We have CUCM 8.6 running in UCS.
The ova file used before installing CUCM 8.6 on UCS was for less number of resources ( 1xvCPU, 1x80GB, 4GB RAM ).
    I need to increase resources of VM, so instead of 1=vCPU & 1x80GB, 4GB RAM i want 2 vCPU and 2 x 80 GB, 6GBM RAM.
If i increase the number of vCPU, RAM & HD from vSphere Client manually, what is the risk in CUCM database, will it effect or it will be safe ?
Is there any way to upgrade the ova file in running VM instead of building new VM with new OVA file ?
    Kindly help.
    Regards,

    Hello bernhardczapp,
We were upgrading CUCM 8.6 to 10.5 but unfortunately it failed with an error saying there is no disk space available, we opened case wtih cisco & we were advised to perform following tasks to free disk space:
Clear the logs is from RTMT tool, download the old log/traces and delete them from the server with this process:
    1)      Login to RTMT
    2)      Go to Trace & log central
    3)      Select Collect File
    4)      Select All service checkbox and All server checkbox, click next.
    5)      Select a period of time. Select all the time frame for the logs that you do not need anymore, example from January until July. (Also there is a drop down so you can clear the ones from the inactive partition.)
    6)      Select the Delete file Checkbox.
    7)      Click finish
We followed procedure & after 8 hours it made 6495 MB space free. Before was 36444MB & after process 29949MB.
Reason i mentioned about new ova file for CUCM 10.5 is that while creating VM i will have option to select 7,500 users (this will give me 2x80GB, 2xvCPU, 1x6GB RAM)
I will try installing your suggested cop files & will update you. Do i need to restart Servers after cop file installation ?
But if you have alternate solution please share.
    Kind Regards

  • PRIME Infrastructure OVA co-residency with CUCM on UCS

    Hallo All.
Has anyone installed the PRIME Infrastructure OVA alongside CUCM on a UCS?
I've been looking at this document
http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_Virtualization_Sizing_Guidelines but it is vague on PRIME Infra.
Also, the CUCM I am installing alongside is v8.5
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers
    David

The PI documentation is lagging a bit - the only requirements for the current release are what's in the Quick Start Guide here.
There is no requirement for dedicated cores. As long as your VM meets the hardware specification of the QSG, your installation should be OK. (Of course, it doesn't hurt to provide more than the minimum requirements.)

  • Migrating a CUCM-SME with PCD

    Hi,
can a CUCM Session Management Edition be migrated using PCD?
I suppose yes, since that is like a classic CUCM without phone registered.
    Thanks and regards,
    Christian

It should be possible, as you mention, it's just a CUCM that is just performing trunking function, nothing different from any other CUCM with phones attached to it.
