Migration of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition to new hardware

Hi
I have a Windows SBS 2011 Standard Edition installation, of which, the windows component is very buggy.  Everything on the server is working i.e. AD, Email.  I am unable to shutdown the server gracefully, i am unable to open the system manager.
Backups also are not running, so i don't have a proper backup that i can use.
I want to migrate my Windows SBS installation to some standby equipment which i have, then reinstall the old server with Windows SBS 2011 and migrate back from the standby equipment to the original hardware.
I know this is possible, and i know that Windows SBS 2011 gives a 21 days grace period to complete the migration.
Is the path i have mentioned above seems to be viable for me to try and get back to my original hardware, with a fresh installation of Windows SBS, keeping AD and Microsoft Exchange intact.
Regards

Will not work as you have outlined it.  The installation of a new server installs a new SID and you cannot add SBS to SBS domains.  The only chance you have at this is to install a new non-SBS DC in the domain, export the mail assuming you are
using Exchange, move the shares to the new DC or some other system, pull out the SBS from the domain, move all the FSMO roles and have a stand alone Server Domain without SBS.  Then, add SBS back to the domain in the documented manner.
I suggest you contact www.sbsmigration.com for a documented and supported method to accomplish this migration.

    Hi,
Based on my experience, there is no upgrade path for OEM licensing. In addition, only SBS 2008 Standard can upgrade to SBS 2011 Standard, and there is no path to so
that from SBS 2011 Essentials. I am sorry to say that you may need a migration instead of an upgrade.

  • If I do a repair the windows small business server 2011 standard repair console, will I loose the user's and computer's that are currently setup on the server ?

will I loose the user's and computer's that are currently setup on the server?

    Hi,
Based on your description, I understand you want to repair SBS 2011 console (please refer to
    the TechNet article:
Repair the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard Console). However, worry about losing users and groups that be created by Windows SBS Console. As far as I know, those will not lose.
Since, when you create users and groups via SBS console, those are added to Activity Directory.
The SBS console is a GUI component, which makes it easy to configure and manage your Windows SBS 2011 Standard network. When you repair the SBS console, this component will be affected.
In view of your concerns, please back up before operation. It will help us to avoid some unexpected
    issue.
    Hope this helps.

    thank you

    Hi fatem,
Before going further, would you please let me confirm something more?
Can you remember which operation had been done, then this issue occurred firstly? Installed some updates or any other operation?
When this issue occurred, please check if you can ping and RDP to this SBS 2011 standard.
On current situation, it’s hard to say the root cause of this issue. I suggest that you can restart the SBS
2011 standard in Safe Mode with Networking and check if this issue still persists.
If more details you can find, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Migration from Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Snow Leopard Server

    Hello,
I'm going to migrate a Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard to a Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server 10.6.x in a few weeks.
    I have 2 questions :
Is there an official process to migrate my Exchange server datas ?
Snow Leopard Server has it Wizards to help me to muigrate datas to proper services ?
    Thanx
    Regards,
Gil DERENNE aka --( dB )--

    Thank you for your reply
My network will be Apple only in a few time (1 server, 1 iMac and 1 Mac Pro).
Now, I want to replace server and all services installed on it :
    - Active Directory (replaced by Open Directory)
    - Users/Groups/machines
    - NAT/Firewall and Backup (will be replaced by a Time Capsule)
    - VPN for mobile access
    - File and Printer sharing
    - Fax Services with Fax/Modem 56K !oops! (replaced by a free service offer by my ISP)
    - Mail/Calendar/Address book and notes with Exchange (replaced by each service to serv right thing : Mail, iCal, Address book...).
I know what to do with all things but not for replacing Exchange and transfer datas to each similar service in Snow Leopard.
In the network, Mail Server will be used by Outlook with IMAP protocol and other services by web interface (Windows computers are not a problem for me, it can be alone and only access web if necessary).
The number of clients inside the LAN :
    - 2 iPhones
    - 1 iPod Touch
    - 1 PC Windows Vista (for a few time) with some VM (Linux and Windows)
    - 1 iMac 27' with 1 VM (Windows)
    - 1 LAN Printer HP Deskjet 6127 (RJ45 Static IP connection)
The number of clients outside the LAN :
    - 3 PC Windows XP
    - 2 PC Windows Vista
    - 5 Nokia Smart Phones
When I'm going to by the Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard Server, is there some support to help me to do it whith them and is it free or do I have to buy AppleCare to access to this service ?

  • OSX 10.9 compatibility with Windows Small Business Server 2011?

    Hi
I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me as our external server guys have been particularly unhelpful!
I'm the only Mac on a Windows server, which has recently been upgraded (??) to Windows Small Business Server 2011. I've recenty upgraded the work iMac to 10.9, but ever since the server change, I'm having intermittent dificulties saving files. Often, I get and error saying the file cannot be saved as I don't have permission to access the folder - which then worryingly REMOVES the file I'm trying to overwrite WITHOUT WARNING.
If I'm using Photoshop save for web, I get errors when clicking 'Save' to say that it can't, but does save the file, plus a second with a gibberish file name.
Most worryingly though, is that now on two occasions caused the iMac to crash and shutdown immediately, which is not good at all. Once was moving a file to overwrite another in the Finder, the second (today) was saving from Illustrator.
I'd noticed weird things with our old 2003 server before the switch and when I was still on 10.6 - mainly that my iMac was slow when connected (Adobe apps etc opened in a flash when unconnected, but took minutes when plugged in), but now I'm on 10.9 and the new server installed, these saving issues have arisen. (I ended up wiping the Mac and completely reinstalling everything to cure that slowness issue - never did find out what it was!).
The server guys are adamant that this has nothing to do with the server, and is all linked to my iMac - personally I'm not so sure, but I'm asking here to see if anyone else has had issues? It seems like some kind of permission problem? Do I need any special network settings for it to play nicely with the Windows server? My internet, email all goes through it, and I use it to store my work, but I'm not linked to any other server software in any way.
If anyone may have any clues to help I'd be really grateful!
    Many thanks!
    Ben

Thanks for the response - this is why I'm asking though- I can't see anything on the iMac which would be causing this, and saving files to a folder on a server is a pretty basic fuction, and I can't risk the crashes. I don't see how the iMac connection would be causing this, or for the files to 'vanish' but if it is the iMac settings I'll need to find a fix. Every one else is okay, but I'm the only one using this software and filetypes. Surely the Windows software would have some kind of instructions for connecting Macs?
I was hoping someone may have experience and if any additional network settings might be needed. I will check with Apple support also to see if they have any info, but thought I may get a good response here.
What I meant by the "server guys" is that's it's an external company we pay to look after it - so I'd hoped they might have at least looked into it for me, but it's a brick wall "We don't support Macs" response... which is why I think it's unhelpful - even though they supplied the software knowing it needs to have multiplatform support...
    It's really frustrating.
And I hope nobody does insist I use Windows... please... I'd have to leave....
EDIT - "We"?? - Do you work for them!?

  • Migration of Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials

    Hi,
I am trying to migrate Windows Small Business Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Essentials by following the steps given in the link below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200112.aspx
I have looked at other threads on the forum but none of them have been too helpful.
    The issue: When
I run the Migration Preparation Tool on the Source Server, it runs successfully and does not report any errors. However, when I try installing Windows Server 2012 Essentials on the Destination Server, it displays an error that says 'Source
Server not prepared for migration: After you run the Migration Preparation Tool successfully on your source Server, click retry'.
The Source Server has 2 network adapters-one for the local network and the other for connection to the internet and the router is set as the default gateway this adapter.
Since it is mentioned in the documentation - 'configure your Source Server to use one network adapter', I'm wondering if this is the issue and I need to make changes in this configuration?
On running the Microsoft IT Environment Health Scanner tool it
reported an error - 'DNS Server listening on multiple addresses' and a warning ‘Domain Controller listening on multiple addresses’. Both point to the same solution KB 272294 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272294).
But it did not remove the errors.
    Other steps performed:
As per the steps, I performed a backup, installed recent service packs and synchronized the source server time with external source.
On running the Best Practices Analyser. It shows 3 warnings.
    - The threshold for the Allocated Memory alert is set to the default value. However the server has more than 2 GB of RAM installed.
    - Microsoft Outlook Client not installed" Text="Microsoft Outlook Client is not installed in the ClientApps folder. You must run Windows SBS integrated setup.
    - The MSFW instance should use the latest available service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. The MSFW instance should use the latest available service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000.
I also ran the Ran netdiag.exe, dcdiag.exe commands
    and no failures were reported.
The Event Viewer does not show any errors.
Not sure to what extent these warnings would affect the migration.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The SBS2003 needs to use one NIC only so you'll need to change that before starting. If it is the premium version and has ISA server installed, that will need to be removed first.  See:

  • Migrating from Windows Small Business Server

So I finally made the jump to an intel based MAC a couple months ago and have loved every minute of it. I am now in a position to move our office to a completely MAC office but I had some questions first.
Currently we are running Windows Small Business Server and have 3 desktops in the office. The server is basically for file sharing. However all of us work from home as well and use Remote Desktop to get into our computers at work and work remotely from home. The main reason we need to dial into the office is to get to our Quickbooks accounting file and create invoices remotely.
    My questions are:
    1. If I were to go with and Apple server and Apple desktops is there a way for me to dial in remotely and access my computers at work similar to Remote Desktop?
    2. Can both MACs and PCs dial in to the Apple Server?
    3. Is anyone out there using a better solution to access a company Quickbooks file on the server? Our current setup is that we have to remote connect to a computer in the office that is networked to the server. Is there some sort of VPN solution that apple offers so the remote computers can dial directly into the server?
Your help is appreciated. I am really looking forward to making my office and all MAC office!
Mac Book Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Intel Dual Core

OS X Server has a VPN server built-in, it's doing both PPTP and L2TP, it's compatible with both Mac and Windows clients IF you have the server connected to directly Internet using a public IP or use PPTP.
There is no "dial-in" support that let's you use POTS (standard telephone) modems built-in.
The Remote Desktop client in every OS X (Panther/Tiger) machine can accept remote control from a (free) VNC application (like Chicken Of the VNC - you connect through the VPN first).
But the fastest remote control setup (most responsive screen updates) would be controlling a Windows XP pro machine by using Microsofts Remote Desktop Client sw (free -or is it? You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/mac/) from either a Mac or another Windows XP client.

  • Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials - Restore Whole RD Website On IIS

I Have Very Little Knowledge In IIS/IIS 7.5
Recently, I tried to add Spiceworks into my Small Business Server Website as a Sub Directory such as http://websitename.com/spiceworks
this did not work, but while doing this I have messed up the SBS Remote Web Access Site. I tried to remove and add the IIS Server Role in Server Manager, this gave no luck what so ever, I then tried to delete the Mac, Certificate and Default Web Site from
IIS MMC Snap-in and re-add them, they did not work and I'm not sure where they are located. I do not have Exchange OWA or Sharepoint installed, I only have Spiceworks running on it's own web server under port 9877 and all the Microsoft SBS Software from the
    install.
I cannot not access any website including the Client Connect, Main Website and the Spiceworks website at all.
I don't really want to Format and Install SBS again as it was difficult to get it installed and I have about 1TB of data what would have to be moved else where.  Is there any way on how I can restore the whole website back to a fresh install state?
And sorry, Backup Drive has failed so no backups currently.
Thanks In Advance, If You need any more infomation or an email address, I am happy to help.

You have Exchange and Sharepoint installed on SBS Essentials?
If you have SBS Standard there is an easy repair.
Can you confirm which OS you have?

  • Small Business Server 2011 Standard DNS change for Offcie 365

I currently have a SBS 2011 system setup and recently upgraded the company to Office 365. The issues stemming from this is that users although receive email fine, are not able to access public folders or the sharepoint list in the outlook client. The clients
continue to refer to the local exchange server for the lists and not the office 365.
After a lot of research the question is do es the integration tool that is for the SBS 2011 Essentials work with SBS 2011 Standard?
User connected directly to the domain can not see the Public folders on 365.
    /Number of users:21
    /Office 365: Office 365 Small Business Premium
    1. It wasnt really a migration since I wasn't able to preform one. We setup all the account on 36, and them moved all the email files on each computer individually. We created a backup file for each user, then removed the outlook profile. Created a new profile
and account for 365, then moved all the files from the data backup to the new account.
    2. I have the pure Office 365 Exchange system, The issue is that we are running the SBS 2011 Standard, and are unable to shut off the exchange server without crashing the system.
    3. The public folders did not migrate. I created them in Office 365 directly.
    4. Yes, all the computers that are not connected to the domian see the public folders and the sharepoint folders.
Since outside of the domain user see everything I can to the conclusion that it was a DNS issue on the SBS server itself. On an outlook client that is setup for the 365 environment that is connect to the domain there is another thing that points to that cause.
When you go to the Account Information section in Outlook, under the Account and Social Network Settings it says to Access This Account on The Web, it points back to the in house server.

After a lot of research the question is do es the integration tool that is for the SBS 2011 Essentials work with SBS 2011 Standard?
seems can be used for sbs 2011 standard...

  • Small Business Server 2011 Standard - VSS Writer Fails - Backup Fails - '2155348129'.

I have a "new build" SBS 2011 STD server, live since December, that has very inconsistent backup success - perhaps once every two weeks, I see a valid backup.  I am using the installed windows backup wizard from within the SBS console.  The following
    writers consistently fail:
    - MS Search
    - Exchange
    - SQL Server
    - NTDS
    - FRS
I've read a number of similar threads and tried restarting the recommended services (crypto, volume shadow, etc.).  I've run the psconfig per recommendations (twice).
I also have MozyPro installed and it is receiving the same errors in terms of VSS writers failing.
I appreciate any ideas you may have as to how to resolve this.
    Thank you!
    Jim
PS - here is the consistent failure message in the event log:  the backup operation that sstarted at xxxxxxxxx has failed because the volume shadow copy service operation to create a shadow copy of volumes being backed up failed with the following error
code:  '2155348129'.  Please review the event details for a solutin and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
    Jim

SBS 2011 running exchange 2010, Acronis Macruim and windows backups all failing this is what I had to do to resolve the VSSS issue.
Following recent backup issues, investagation into the issue are on going, Acronis was first upgraded to latest version, , further investigation, has found an issue with exchange VSS writer, after run a chkdsk for file system errors, errors was detected
    and repaired.
Also by stopping the infomation store will allow you to run a backup of your server.
Update: a defrag and repair of exchange mdb, or Service pack to exchange or O/S will not fix the issue.
run VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS at admin level in CMD to see which VSS writer is causing your issue.
Create a BAT file with the following text and run this will register any VSS writers, try a backup if you still get VSS errors please continue with the rest of this document.
BAT creation open notepad and enter
    cd /d %windir%\system32
    Net stop vss
    Net stop swprv
    regsvr32 ole32.dll
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    vssvc /register
    regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    regsvr32 es.dll
    regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    regsvr32 vssui.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll
    Net stop vss
    Net stop swprv
    regsvr32 ole32.dll
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    vssvc /register

    regsvr32 vssui.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll
Now save as VSSFIX.bat and run.
Install any updates for share point and complete by doing the following.
1.You can also run the following commands to determine if you need to complete the update process with PSCONFIG:-
1.Launch an elevated (Run as Administrator) SharePoint 2010 Management shell from start All Programs Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products SharePoint 2010 Management Shell.
2.Once the shell opens, type the following command followed by enter:
    3.(get-spserver $env:computername).NeedsUpgrade
If the result of this command is true, then you need to complete the steps below. If the result is False then no further action is needed
    1. In order to update the SharePoint databases, you must manually run the PSconfig utility. To run the utility:-
    1.Open an Administrative command prompt.
    2.Change directory to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\BIN
3.Run PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures
Note:- The Company web site will be inaccessible while the command is running. It is best to run the command after business hours.
Restart the server for the changes to take effect.
The second step is as follows:-
    1. Assign the appropriate privileges to the VSS writer user account
    2. To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.
    3.  To assign the appropriate privileges to the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writer user account:
    1. On the computer on which the writer is running, click Start.
2.In the Start Search box, type Regedit, and then press Enter.
    3.Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesVSSVssAccessControl.
4.Right-click VssAccessControl, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
5.Give the registry entry the same name as the user account.
6.Right-click the registry entry name, and then click Modify.
7.Type 1, and then click OK.
    4. To grant permissions the Diag registry key:
    1.Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesVSSDiag.
2.Right-click Diag, and then and click Permissions.
3.If the writer’s user account is listed under Group or user names, ensure that it has Full Control.
4.If the writer’s user account is not listed under Group or user names, click Add to add the account, and then grant it Full Control.
    5.Click OK.
Restart the server for the changes to take effect.
    1. In Active Directory Users and Computers, create a Domain Local Security Group named VSSRegistryGroup
    2. Add SPFARM and SPSEARCH accounts to the VSSRegistryGroup Group
    3. Run regedit
    4. Go to hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\vss\vssaccesscontrol
    5. Add Dword value of DOMAIN\vssregistrygroup where domain is the netbios domainname (example: CONTOSO\vssregistrygroup Note: The Domain name must be in all caps) set the value to 1
    6. Remove values for domain\spsearch and domain\spfarm
    7. Go to hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\vss\diag
    8. Right click on diag and go permissions, click advanced and add VSSRegistrygroup group with Full Control.
    9.  Remove spsearch and spfarm accounts from the list of permissions
