Migration problem: migration assistant won't migrate both user accounts from time machine backup
My Mac was formatted due to some technical issues. Before handing to the lab- I backed it up using time machine ( and only that ).
I had two user accounts on the Mac before handing it to the lab.
One of them I never actually used -I'll call it the secondary.
The second one was the main one - which I used all the time - the principal account. All my data is there on that account.
The Mac was formatted at the lab.
Using the setup assistant I migrated one user from the Time Machine Backup.
Only later I realized it was actually the account I never used.
Since I never used it - I couldn't remember the login password and had to reset it, took a while.
I then tried to to migrate the principal account - the one I actually wanted to migrate, in the fist place, during the setup procedure - using the migration assistant.
At the relevant window I tick the principal account- the mac does some thinking and then in the login window my only options are the secondary account and guest account, the principal account is not to be seen.
I'm really really stressed and worried.
BTW -when looking into the actual external disk used for the Time Machine at this path: computer name--> backups-->macintosh HD -->users--> principal account - I see all the folders and files with a 'no entry' icon next to them.
clicking on the folders - I get the following notice - 'the folder xxx can't be opened because you don't have permission to see the contents''
What's going on?
I'm running on a 2.9Ghz intel core i5
16GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3
SW version: 10.9.4
would appreciate any kind of help,
Thanks
Dana
thanks,
the thing is the Mac was behaving strangely - that's why I sent it to the lab in the first place.
This Mac is just over a year old but it's content was initially migrated from the older mac.
And it (the new Mac) wasn't working properly from the get go..
It took ages for it to start up and wouldn't start up if any external disk was attached (via USB).
I had to start it up and only then connect external disks.
In the lab - They couldn't find and HW issues.
So they formatted and reinstalled the OS - I think that's all they've sone in the lab
The idea was to start afresh and slowly reinstall softwares - only those necessary.
So, having said all that- does that change your answer?

Migration Assistant Won't Migrate User Account from Time Machine
I am trying to move my wife's user account from a Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant. Migration assistant chugs along for 2 1/2 hours and says everything was transfered hunkie-dorie. However, when I try to log her on, I can't. When I log on as me, I went to System Prefs --> Accounts, her username is there. However, when I look inside the Users folder, none of her information is there.
thanks in advance,
timNo Filevault on my computer and hers.
Doesn't work in Save Boot, either. That is the puzzle. Her account appears at the login screen--even the flower pic. that was migrated from from the Time Machine backup. The login screen will not accept any password. I know I'm typing it correctly. Her account appears in System Prefs --> Users, but it's not in the Users folder on my disk drive.

Problem migrating to new Mac mini Server from Time Machine Backup
I sell my old Mac mini Server and after I purchase the new one (unibody). I had the Time Machine Backup but I'm not able to restore it to the new mac mini. I started it with the Server Install DVD into it and I went to Utility menu to choose "*Restore from Time Machine backup*" but it said that *it was not possible to restore the backup to this machine because its a different hardware, and suggested to use Migration*. So I restarted it and when it asked me to choose between "setting up a new server" or "transfer information from an existing server" I chose this last. In the next menu didn't appear any Time Machine backups so I mounted the time machine backup and copied the Latest hd backup to an external firewire hd and I connected it to the new one. In the migration menu list appeared my backup but there was a *yellow triangle icon* over it and the message "*Migration is not supported from servers which are configured to use dynamic network addresses. Configure the source system to have a manual network address and try again*". But how can I config a static address into my backup if I can't restore it into a machine? I don't have anymore the old mac mini to restore the backup and make any change in the configuration!
Any one can please help or give me suggestions?
Many thanksI solved it!
I changed the network settings by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
So I successfully restored my SL server installation, but now I have an issue with Ethernet and SD reader. See this post if you are interested:

re: Migrating my IPhoto from Time Machine Backup to my just-installed Snow Leopard OSX... the program is there, all my photos are there..... but my photos had all been neatly arranged in folders, and there is absolutely no sign of my folders. What a mess, 20,000 photos. How can I restore my folders?
(iphoto 08)Restore the library from Time Machine as shown in this screenshot:
Then open the library with iPhoto. No importing necessary.

Imac won't restore from time machine backup after HD (hard drive) recall replacement
I have an imac bought in 2011, running Snow Leopard. It required an HD replacement due to the 1 TB Seagate recall - the replacement was done by a certified Apple repair station yesterday. Before the guy left he started a backup/restore from my latest time machine backup set. It failed. I attempted it two times and got error messages that it failed and the computer needed to be restarted to try it again. No luck. I called the guy back and he told me to call Apple Care. Not thrilled about that response since the guy had just left my house I did what he told me to do. (A quick sideline here: I recognize that a time machine backup should be no big deal and SHOULD work everytime, but it doesn't. It irks me that Apple is replacing my HD through no fault of mine and yet they don't allow the restore of data to be a "covered" expense in this process - this isn't just because this was an authorized repair guy - the Apple store would have done the same).
Back to the issue. When I called apple care they pretty much had me try the same thing again with an earlier back up set. To my knowledge, it didn't work. I say this because it looked like it was working and when I came back to the imac later, it had restarted and once again booted to the OSX install. (The boot disc is still in the imac). When I tried to boot from another location, one did not show up to boot from so I assumed that the data didn't transfer and it forced another restart. So, I tried something else. I tried to re-install the snow leopard OSX without using the restore function. That appeared to work and then when the machine restarted it asked if I had another mac and I chose the option to get the files/apps/etc. from my time machine backup. The computer chose what I can only assume is the most recent backup set (It chose what I know to be a subfolder that appears under the dated backup folder - Macintosh HD--which btw is confusing seeing as that's always the name of the HD on the imac). I again stepped away from the computer so it could do its thing for two hours. When I returned, I was back to the MAC OSX screen that asks you to choose a language. There were no more options to choose DISK UTILITY or RESTORE FROM BACKUP, etc. When I clicked on English it took me right back into the screen where you say whether you have another Apple that you want to transfer data from. I realized that the imac must have restarted and I assumed maybe it was because the boot disk was still in - except how do you get the disc to eject? I also initially assumed that the backup had somehow failed again and triggered a restart. I tried to choose the option to just set up the machine without transferring data and when I got to the choose a name for your HOME folder message I tried to enter the same name I had it as before and it wouldn't allow me to do so, saying that that name was already in use. I also tried a different name and that didn't work either - got the same message (I assume if it is not the same name that it won't sync up with the time machine data from the backup set). So, I almost tried the "select time machine backup" option again until I looked at my HD space. Clearly, there is space that has been used. HD space was 997 at the start and now it's 636. My initial thought is to somehow get back into the setup area where I can use disc utility and erase the whole thing and then start over but 1) I don't think it's going to work even if I could get back there 2) I have no idea how to get this thing to reboot into that mode 3) I can't get the boot CD out to even try to restart to see if this thing did what it was supposed to, SO NOW I AM TOTALLY STUCK! I have not called Apple Care back because quite frankly they were useless the first time. I have a call into the repair guy but who knows how much help he will be. In the mean time, I have a million things to do and a computer that isn't working - Whoever said Apples never have issues needs to be seriously censored!
A few other notes: I use Time Machine Editor to run my backups weekly. It was set up that way from the get go by an Apple rep who came to my house to get us up and running. Editor should not effect the way that time machine does its work, so I doubt there is relevance but thought it worth mentioning.
One other note is that the Apple Care agent tried to have me do something called a "Source" something or other from the disk utility screen but when she realized that my backup file (shown by date) contained many other sub files (11-27-12/MacintoshHD/MyNamesIMAC/etc.), it was not possible to run this operation - thus we aborted. Sorry I don't remember the name of the process and unfortunately now can't access that option to go find it.
If you can help me, I would be eternally grateful! I am open to having a phone conversation if you are willing to give me your email to mail you my number. I have so much work to do this week and this was the last thing I needed. Did I mention this was supposed to be EASY?
I used to be quite the geek with my PC - still on the learning curve with the mac but not enjoying it. I am fairly tech savvy and I can follow instructions for a step by step solution if you've got one.I got a recall and had the drive replaced. I have retored 3 timesa dn even had apple do the job and it is still not right. I still can't get a simple ghost of the data from time machineback tot he new drive.
This is Apple's explaination as taken from their web page.:
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Recovery system (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
I even posted this information on the community and apple removed it... because they don't like the:
Off-topic or non-technical posts
Non-constructive rants or complaints
But here is my experieince:
Take in 27iMac running 10.6.8, 5-7 days, what a joke, my boss will be happy to pay for a week without working. Finally get, "if you have TM back up, 3 days." Get machine back with 10.6.3, hit the R recovery, click TM back up, runs for 2 hours, reboots, looks great. Box up take back to office... update to install - OH NO, still running 10.6.3. Updates crash with no specific error on install, BUG PROBELM, nothing runs.
Call Apple... after hours, tells me to boot using 10.6.2 disk, wipe, reinstall OS, udate to 10.6.8, THEN do the restore. GREAT! Only thing 10.6.2 DVD won't read... now back on phone... take back to the store, Genius says, he'll ix it just like it was. PROMISES it'll be fixed.
Pick up next day, supposedly, booted to disk, wiped drive, reinstalled, updated to 10.6.8 and THEN did the RIGHT restore... Looks GREAT... apps run and 10.6.8 OS. Back to the office... NOT RUNNING right!!!... fonts messed up, drop box app needs new install, cocktail needs upgrade, Fetch not working, memorized paths gone... back ups locked out of permissions... ***!!
4 hours on phone with apple and still no rsolution - to missing "settings". Seems there are THREE WAYS TO RESTORE (according to apply tech)... Running MIGRATE ASSISTANT and being able to choose your files, including settings, "R" RESTORE after they load a new OS... or NOW WAITING for them to send me a bootable 10.6.3 disk and then boot from disk, w/o installing OS and doing a restore from TM. I think this is done via the disk Utilties application.
So now can't back up without doing a full 400 GB back up since permissons are screwed and possibly destroying any good back ups... can't work, like having hands tied behind back. WAITING for solution! Very upset!!!
I did my first restore just like they said and now an 10 days without proper machine. Just FYI. I thnk I am going to make the store do the tech work so I have somthing to fall back on. -
Hi all,
My computer had been running really slowly for a while, so I decided to erase the whole hard drive and reinstall the operating system, and then I was going to restore the files I cared about from Time Machine. The main account, which had all my documents and photos, was FileVault-protected. The last thing I did before erasing the hard drive was to run one last Time Machine backup. As far as I remember, I always ran Time Machine backups with the FileVaulted user logged in.
I don't remember whether I was using FileVault 1 or 2. I had been using FileVault 1, but I installed Lion as soon as it came out and I thought I had migrated to FileVault 2 at that point.
Once I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system, I browsed the Time Machine disk and, within the Users folder, there was no folder for the main user account. When I tried to reinstall everything by restoring from Time Machine backup, I'd get the option for all the user accounts, but when I tried to log in with the main one I'd get the dreaded "You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "User" at this time. Log in failed because an error occurred." Finally, when attempting to restore from the Time Machine backup again, I noticed something strange: After the computer got to about 10% done restoring, it declared itself completed successfully and rebooted.
I've tried a number of tips that came up from questions about similar issues on the Apple support forum, but had no luck. Is there any way to get these files back? Did they ever even get backed up?
Thanks.Hroodbwai wrote:
I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):

I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:

|
followed by this one:

If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up. -
Disk Repair reported that it could not repair the HD Disk. I am to reformat the disk and restore backed up files. OSX Utilities give me a choice of restoring from time machine backup (which I have on MyPassport) but no information on reformatting the disk, which I assume I have to do first. How do I reformat the HD ...or does the restore from Time Machine do both things?
Boot OS X Recovery and use Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility reported the disk cannot be repaired though, you should replace it with a new one. -
Hi!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" and I wanted to transfer my old files from a previous Time Machine backup done with my old MacBook Pro 15".
Both computers have Mac OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) installed.
I always used Migration Assistant without any problem to accomplish this task, but now I don't know why it's stuck on a screen displaying "Looking for other computers...". What? What computer? I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive, so I don't understand what computer it is looking for.
Do you have any idea to solve the problem?
Thanks! At the screen in Migration Assistant titled "Select a Migration Method," select From a Time Machine backup or other disk.

Restoring a single account from Time Machine using Migration Assistant
I have seen a few threads on this but none that quite describe the scenario I'm dealing with. I had a HD that died. Sent it away to Apple. It came back with a brand new empty HD.
I fired up OS X, attached my external HD with my Time Machine backups, opened the Migration Assistant and selected "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and my Time Machine backup didn't show up at all.
I then verified that the Disk and Computer both had the name that they did before: BigDisk and Rage respectively. Still nothing.
I don't want to have to manually copy over files from this backup. That is not supposed to be the point of this thing. Do I need to create a user account with the same name as the backup? I've been trying it from a user account with a different name.
Also, the backup only includes specific things in the Home Folder. Is that going to be a problem? Is this meant to restore an entire Hard Drive or something?V.K. wrote:

When you say "full backup" do you mean a backup of the entire volume? I definitely do that. Would it work if I were backing up the entire home folder instead of just specific folders inside of it.
yes, that should work.
I found a workaround:
1. Create an Account that is not the account to be backed up
2. Enter Time Machine
3. Navigate to the home folder of the account to restore in the most recent backup
4. Restore it
5. Create an Account and specify that you should use the home folder that already exists with that name.
that works too.
Sorry, I misspoke earlier. I don't backup the whole volume or the whole home folder. I exclude certain folders using the Time Machine exclusions. Does this explain why my backup was unavailable in the Migration Assistant. -
Hello all,
I have just acquired a new MacBook which I want to set up completely fresh. The only data I really need to restore/copy to it, besides a few document folders, is the iTunes library from my existing iMac. The iTunes library has been backed up using time machine on the iMac (using a portable drive). I’ve heard it might be possible for me to plug the time machine backup into the new MacBook and then option-click the time machine icon in order to 'browse other backup disks' and then restore iTunes. Would this work and would all my devices still sync with iTunes? I’m just a bit nervous because apple has migration assistant and setup assistant for doing this sort of thing - I just really don’t want to use them because the only thing I want on my new MacBook from the whole of the time machine backup is literally the iTunes library. I don’t want to start restoring user accounts which you must do with the assistants.
Thank you.Thank you ever so much for the replies. Just one thing: the link you provided seems to discuss restoring individual items on the computer for which a backup has been made. On my macbook I can't click "enter time machine" which I'm guessing is because the time machine backup is for my old iMac (hence my comment about control clicking the menu bar).

Migration Assistant or Install From Time Machine Backup?
Hi,
I have a question. I currently have an older iMac and I'm thinking of buying a new iMac. I'd like to transfer EVERYTHING on my old iMac to my new iMac, so that the new iMac is identical in terms of Applications installed, Mail, Documents, Dashboard setup, etc.
Which is the best technique to use to do this? Migration Assistant or installing OS X from your Time Machine Backups? Why is one better than the other? Really, I want the cleanest, most accurate solution, so that nothing is lost, and so I can continue on from where I left off.Reuben Feffer wrote:
what if I have an expensive piece of software installed on my old iMac? Will Migration Assistant copy that over to my new iMac, without messing up the number of activations?
Yes, but depending on which you may need to deactivate and re-activate. This question would be better put to the software vendor. I am guessing Quark?
Reuben Feffer wrote:
And what about things like the way I've customised my Desktop, icon sizes, and such. Will they automatically be copied over to the new iMac, or will I have to start again from scratch?
Not to worry, all your settings will be brought over. It will be identical to your old Mac.
Read this on Migration Manager. for a fuller understanding.

Confliciting info - Migration Assistant from Time Machine Backup
I want to do a clean install of ML, There are certain applications that I did not want to migrate. I was told that you had no choice, it would migrate all of them.
when using Migration Assistant from a Time Machine backup.
Is this true before I start
Thank you in AdvanceThat's correct (whether you migrate directly from another Mac, or its Time Machine or "clone" backups). See Transferring Applications for an explanation and possible workarounds.

Cannot migrate from time machine backup
Yesterday my internal hard disk crashed and after repairing disk in recovery mode I could reinstall MtLion.
Using migration assistent I wanted to recover my old accounts, but the assistant could not find my time machine backup.
Information
Backup-System: External USB Harddisk connected directly to iMac
Spare-Bundle located in root folder of external hard disk
Backup only for my account folders and some special folders but not the entire system
I can open the TM backup with "DiscUtility" and with Time Machine (pressing <option> key while opening TM-menu)
Currently I try to repair the SpareBundle because this has been mentioned in many discussions and support pages.
I would like to use the Migration assistent because I am afraid, that my "secret"files like key-chain would not be accessible any longer in case I recover it manually.
What can I do so that the assistent works again?

Be sure you're selecting the From Another Disk option in Migration Assistant.
The sparse bundle should appear on the Select Your System window there, but note that it will show the name of the disk and Computer name that was backed-up, not the name of the disk the backups are on.
Or, you may first see the name of the drive the backups are on; if you select that, after a few moments, you'll see the actual backups, with the name of the disk and Computer that were backed-up.
If it doesn't appear, try manually mounting the sparse bundle before starting Migration Assistant.
We have a few reports that occasionally a disk won't appear, but the Continue button will be enabled; if so, click it - the Select items to Migrate window may appear and you can proceed.
Backup-System: External USB Harddisk connected directly to iMac
Spare-Bundle located in root folder of external hard disk
That's a bit strange. Normally, for backups made to a directly-connected HD, the Backups.backupdb folder
is placed at the top level of the drive, not inside a sparse bundle. A sparse bundle is used only when backups are made over a network. It doesn't much matter now, but is there a reason that was done?
• Backup only for my account folders and some special folders but not the entire system
That prevents you from doing a full system restore, which often works when Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant don't.
And you'll likely have trouble with any "complex" 3rd-party apps (typically the ones that come with their own installers). They'll probably have to be reinstalled from the original discs.
Currently I try to repair the SpareBundle because this has been mentioned in many discussions and support pages.
Yes, that's the place to start. In this case, you need to repair both the disk or partition containing the sparse bundle and the sparse bundle itself (it's kind of a disk-within-a-disk).
If you're not sure how to do that, use the procedure in #A5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a USB drive connected to a Time Capsule.
If Disk Utility can't repair it, see the pink box at the bottom of that page -- it's possible a heavy-duty, 3rd-party disk repair app can.
I would like to use the Migration assistent because I am afraid, that my "secret"files like key-chain would not be accessible any longer in case I recover it manually.
If you can't repair the sparse bundle, or if Migration Assistant still doesn't recognize the backups, that will be your only other option.
Unfortunately, there do seem to be some cases where Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion don't recognize perfectly good backups. Hopefully Apple is working on a fix, but that's not going to help now.
As far as I understood, then I can re-use my "old" TM-Backup and connect it to Time Machine without deleting my old backup
Maybe, but you'll need a different procedure.
You'll need the new account to have not only the same name, but the same UID (User ID number) as the old one. Those are assigned automatically when you create a user account, and are mostly invisible.
If you never had more than one account, the one on the backups should be #501. And the one you created after installing OSX should also have #501, so if you can get the backups to appear at all, the new user account should have access to them. And if they have the exact same short user name (home folder name), when you do the next backup, Time Machine should recognize the home folder as the same one as on the backups, as if nothing had changed.
We may need to explore that further once you get your system rebuilt.
And you'll have to manually "associate" the new disk with the backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting before starting new backups. -
Migrate from time machine backup without losing pre-installed applications?
I purchased a used mac mini A1283 that came with pre-loaded OSX Lion and iWork11 on the harddrive (no CDs/DVDs).
I have a "time machine backup" from a previous mac of mine running OSX Lion but without iWork11.
I would like to restore the time machine backup, but not lose iWork11. As it is my understanding and experience from 1 attempt already, if I use migration assistant, it creates a new user account with all of my old stuff, but unfortunatelty does not inherit the iWork11 applications from the main admin user account. What is the best way to marry all my old stuff (files, settings, etc.) with the new iWork11 apps?
Thanks,
DCIf all your apps are in the top-level Applications folder, all users have access to them.
If you already have files associated with those apps in a different user account, you can transfer them to a different account. See Transferring files from one User Account to another. As noted there, that's fairly easy for some types of data, somewhat harder for others.
