Migration steps to an Intel mSATA unit

Hello All:
In a July thread in this Forum harrisb reported his experiences installing an "OEM" mSATA (Intel 310 80Gig unit. I never became clear to me whether forarmed with the Intel Migration Assistant software I would need to clone my current state of C:/.
I have had the W520 for a couple of weeks and installed much of what will go on the system, but not yet the Adobe creative programs. Planning that soon... but perhaps I should wait until the little solid state energizer bunny is in there and settled in.
1. Can I download and use the Intel Migration sw even if I have the OEM drive? (I figured I could but have to know for sure...)
2. Will that software clone the necessary OS files without trying to stuff my data in the SSD? Do I just tell the sw which folders hold only data? Could it be that easy?
3. Does this all happen with the drives installed inside the W520 case or do I have to get an external enclosure/HD connector? (suspect the sw can do this without taking machine apart...)
4. Is Intel able to align the sectors of the bits that get moved with their SDD hardware without a second step to do so?
NewEgg selling the Intel 310 80Gig for $192. As a commercial photographer planning to use this for photo/multimedia editing and tethered shooting I hope for gains in speed. I might put a small scratch disk on the SSD during editing sessions. (If there's room!)
Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks, in advance,
jonathan 7007

I understand that Windows 7 natively supports the TRIM functionality, but in an Intel forum, it was suggested that the SSD toolbox optimizer also be run every week. It certainly doesn't hurt anything and the driver performance has stayed the same since installation 5 months ago, From the Intel website:
"....Intel recommends running the Intel Optimizer once a day. Since the total execution time for running the Intel SSD Optimizer runs in a matter of seconds and there is no known risk of harm to the SSD due to continuous repeated use, Intel recommends scheduling the Intel SSD Optimizer to run on a daily basis. Overuse does not cause problems with the SSD but wastes system resources to run the optimizer more than is recommended...."

  • Advice on migrating from G5 to Intel Core Duo Mini

I'm running 10.5.8 on a G5 and wanting to migrate to a new Intel Core Duo Mac Mini running Snow Leopard.  I would like to migrate all of my files and settings and applications to the new machine, but am looking for advice about potential pitfalls.  I've read in some of the other discussions about problems with software from my G5 overwriting the Intel versions of the software on the newer machine, but could not glean enough from those to fully understand what the issues are.  My principal software components that I don't want to have to reinstall are things like CS3, Office 2008, and older versions of things like iMovie, etc.  I have a Time Machine backup that I could also migrate from, but don't know if that will alleviate potential problems.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Before you jump the bandwagon, make sure to have read this user tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
Sometimes the Migration/Setup Assistant doesn't work between PowerPC and Intel Macs. The CoreDuo Mac Mini is not much of an improvement over a G5 except for the native Windows virtualization, and support for Snow Leopard, and Intel Mac only applications, and built-in Front Row support.  The Core2Duo Mac Mini on the other hand supports Lion,  and generally is faster than a G5 except for the few applications that are G5 optimized or can take advantage of the higher RAM upgrade possibilities than most of the Mac Minis, and the G5 supports Classic applications where the Mac Mini Intel versions do not.  So before getting the Mac Mini make sure all the applications or at least some can take advantage of the Mac Minis own advantages.

  • TM and Migrating from G5 to Intel RAID Mac.

The good news: I have a new Mac Intel Pro and all my previous G5's data is backed up by Time Machine to a fast Newr Tech FW RAID.
    The funky news:
    1. I'd read a User Tip Contribution by Kappy that suggested how to migrate from a Motorola -based system to the new Intel. It seemed that Migration Assistant is not useful here, much less via Time Machine. True? (while I can no longer find this tip, I have a Web Archive of it)
    2. Also, I've read here that I cannot continue using my old Time Machine backup account on the new Intel Mac. I'll have to wait while TM backs up up my new Mac entirely to a new TM account. I only have 300 GB left on my TM backup drive. Will I lose my G5's data when I add my Time Machine/FW disk to the new Intel. How, then, can I access my old data? If I can access my old data, must I retain my Username from my previous G5's accounts to be able to access TM backup data from my old Mac?
    3. Another variable: I got three ATA disks and an Apple RAID card for the new Intel Mac. I assume that setting up the array will be the first task when booting my Intel Mac for the first time, yes? I'm also guessing that I would want my OS/Apps on one disk, and a RAID array from the remaining two for files, as in OS9 days when one couldn't install an OS on a RAID disk, yes? Does this suggest that all my Home directory's files, such as Documents, Movies, Music, etc. should be aliased to the RAID array disks, to keep the Apps on non-RAID, files on RAID discrete?
    4. I gather I'll have to re-install all my 3rd Party software: Adobe CS3, Intel -compatible games, Final Cut Pro, Toast, etc. instead of using TM. Wow, no wonder I've been putting off setting up my new Mac.
    All advice is welcome.

the fact that you'd be migrating from TM backup is irrelevant here. the fact that you'd be migrating from PPC to intel is relevant. You can try doing that but there may be problems. definitely do not migrate applications.
Here is one of kappy's posts on the issue

    2. Also, I've read here that I cannot continue using my old Time Machine backup account on the new Intel Mac. I'll have to wait while TM backs up up my new Mac entirely to a new TM account.
    yes

I would suggest you use a different disk or reformat the existing one. You should format TM disk with GUID partition map for intel TM backups and yours is most likely formatted with Apple partition Map.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550?viewlocale=en_US
You can try using the old TM disk but you might run into problems later. if you do use the old drive TM should give you an option of keeping the stuff already on the drive so that you can ahve your old TM backups there too.
How, then, can I access my old data? If I can access my old data, must I retain my Username from my previous G5's accounts to be able to access TM backup data from my old Mac?
not username but userid. It's most likely 501 in both cases so that should not be a problem.

  • SAP R/3 HW migration steps

    Dear all,
We are purchasing new servers for our SAP R/3 environment, because current one's are almost five years old.
    SAP R/3 4.6C on Oracle 9.2.0.5 on HP-UX 11.00
I was wondering about this procedure for SAP application and DB copy to the new server.
What do you think about the following steps on the new server:
    1. HP-UX 11i v2 installed,
    2. File systems for /oracle/SID...., /usr/sap/SID..., /sapmnt/SID... created.
    3. users sidadm and orasid environment variables - copy the same from the source
    4. Install Oracle 9.2.0 with the patchset 9.2.0.5 like the source databases,
    5. /etc/passwd, /etc/services, /etc/group copy the corresponding lines from this files
    6. rcp from current server to the new one the file systems:
       a. /oracle/SID
       b. /oracle/SID/sapdata*
       c. /oracle/SID/mirrlog*
       d. /oracle/SID/orriglog*
       e. /oracle/SID/sapreorg
       f. /oracle/SID/saparch
       g. /usr/sap/SID
       h. /sapmnt/SID
    7. Change hostname on the SAP profiles, sidadm profile files, .profile, .login, .dbenv, .sapenv , orasid user profile files .dbenv_<host>.sh and .dbenv_<host>.csh in the home directory of ora<dbsid>.
    8. /home/sidadm startsap_... stopsap_... scripts change the hostname for the new server
    9. listener.ora and tnsnames.ora change
    10. SAP license installation of temporary license, until the successful migration
Can I do the SAP system copy from one server to another like the above procedure?
    Thank you all.
    Many regards,
    Ruzica

    Dear all,
Can You PLS look at my planned steps for TMS reconfiguration?
    Is this ok?
    For QTS and DEV.
    1. Logon to the target system as user " SAP* " in client 000.
    - Run transaction SE06 and select the radio button "Database Copy" and
    click on the "execute" pushbutton.
    - source system of database copy = (the same SID)
    - Answer "yes" to everything
    - Change all objects from <sid> to <sid>
Ans "yes" for "Delete TMS configuration" & "Delete TMS transport route
    NB.
Should I delete (with SE06) the TMS configuration for PRD also (the transport domain)?
    2. STMS from DEV and QTS and delete all systems.
    3. STMS from PROD (client 000) if I was deleted the TMS config now I should create three system landscape with ProdQTSDevelopment and create the transport routes manualy
I have saved the transport route config
    4. From DEV and QTS client 000, STMS -> other config -> Include system in domain
    5. From PROD STMS->Overview systems -> select DEV -> SAP System -> Approve
and also select QTS -> SAP System -> Approve
    6. Should I delete the RFC connections
[email protected]_PROD [email protected]_PROD before deleting the TMS config in PROD?
    THANK YOU in advace again

  • How do I remove migrated PPC apps from Intel iMac that has the same apps?

Before I begin, please know that I've read a lot of previous posts but all the posts only had some of what I needed so I'm posting this as a new topic. OK, here I go:
My PPC running 10.5 just froze-up (that has since been solved) but in the process of solving that issue, I migrated everything as a different user (User B) INCLUDING my applications, to my Intel iMac - my iMac that also had the same applications on it - except they were intel versions and they were under User A.
So I essentially did an archive and clean install on my PPC.
Then, using Migration Assistant, I transferred User B onto my PPC. Now both of my computers have duplicates of most of my applications. In trying to fix this issue, I found out I should NOT have transferred my applications. So now I'm very confused as to which apps I should remove off my PPC and which I should remove off my intel iMac.
If I just delete User B from my intel iMac, that's easy enough but will that remove the dupes? I have a funny feeling it doesn't.
And then, which do I remove from my PPC?
AND THEN, are there other things I will need to remove from different places on my computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
And now, I've used migration assistant to move everything from user (B) back to my PPC. Now I have duplicate applications with "(from old mac)"

Normally application go in the Applications folder at the top level of the hard drive, not in any user folders. If you have applications in user folders that are the same as those in the Applications folder, you can delete them from the user folders. If you actually migrated PPC applications into the Applications folder on an Intel Mac, it would have replaced the Intel versions. To fix that, you would have to reinstall OSX on the Intel Mac.
The same thing would apply on the PPC Mac.

  • Migrating from G5 to Intel Mac Mini

I have an old dual G5 2GHz, running OSX 10.5.8 with:
    + old Apple 23" Cinema Display (1920x1200)
    + HP L2065 LCD display (1600x1200)
+ 2x 500GB internal hard disks and lots of PPC Applications.
    + 2x External Firewire 400 disks.
I am going to buy a new Mac Mini 2.5GHz i5, runningOSX 10.7 with 8GB RAM and 750GB hard disk.
How well will the Migration Assistant perform for me?
    1. iTunes library on external 500Gb hard disk. Will the library XML etc be migrated automatically?
    2. Old PPC applications, will it make a list of those that won't work on the Mini?
    3. Preferences, settings and other data usable (?) for Intel versions of software I will need to upgrade
    4. Both machines have FireWire 800 ports, so I will need to buy one FW800 cable, right?
    5. Are there FW800 cables that will run FW400 drives?
    6. Does anyone know the actual performance of any Thunderbolt hard disks with the Mac Mini 2.5GHz i5 ?
Is the Mac Mini itself slower than (forthcoming) Thunderbolt hard disks?
    7. Will I need to buy any cables to run the two monitors?
    8. Anything else I missed?
    Thanks!

I just did this.....and at first it was a disaster.  My new Mac Mini server with a 250GB SSD and 750GB HD was runnin' at light speed under Lion, I had installed MS Office 2011 and Photoshop Elements from the app store.....all was great.
Then I tired to use the migration assistant on the Mini to transfer stuff from the G5 that I started up in firewire target disk mode. Ran for hours (mostly overnight) transferring apps (which I mistakenly thought that the migrations assistant would purge of non-lion compatible stuff) and then after re-start the mini would have kernal panics about every 30-90 seconds.
Had to restore the system over the internet, again a long process, but now all is fine again.  And the Mini screams, once you get through this you will love the new machine.   Again, I stated the G5 in firewire disk mode and this time only transferred the contents of my user folders to some new folders on the mini.
But basically what I learned the hard way is that pretty much no apps will transfer, and that the migration assistant is pretty dumb.  I've heard they've updated the migration assistant for Leapord (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1434  you would use this on the G5) and maybe this will help, but for my money the basic info is that your files will transfer, and that your apps and app realted things won't.  And for that I don't need a migration assistant.....
I did copy my itunes libraries (manually) and they work fine on my mini, anlong with all my mailboxes too, and iPhoto libraries, etc.  It was a little work, but I did it manually.
I connected the mini to my G5 with one FW800 cable.  And yes you'll need an adapter or a FW400 to FW800 cable (basically the adapter is in the cable) to use FW400 stuff.

  • Migrating from a 20" Intel iMac to a 24"... any gotcha's?

I want to buy a new 24" iMac, mainly for the increased speed and Firewire 800 port. I have to make the switch from one machine to the other quickly. A few questions...
Any know problems moving 3rd party app's using the Migration Assistant? How about with Apple app's such as FCS, iTunes (actually iTunes was hosed during the last upgrade so this isn't critical). Microsoft locks certain programs to the CPU S/N and system configuration in a Windows environment; same true on the iMac? After the migration, what's left on the source (20") computer; i.e. when the Migration Assistant moves programs to the new computer does it delete them from the old computer? I plan to sue my existing 20" Cinema display as the 2nd monitor with the 24" iMac. Any scaling problems? Basically, are there any gotcha's I should be aware of before spending all that money?
(This is my second posting of these questions. The original seems to have disappeared. If this ends up being a duplicate, my apologies.)
 20" Intel iMac + Cinema Display + Sony HDR-HC7 HD camera   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   All tools, no talent!

I simply took the FW400 HDD containing my most recent backup of my old computer, connected it to the new computer, booted to this drive, then did a 'backup' from from it to the internal HDD of the new computer. Once completed, I booted to the new computer and the job was done.
Interesting... when I tried Apple's approach I also got stuck around 6 hours into the process. I tried twice and finally gave up. The SuperDuper approach was fast and worked the first time I tried it. I should add the SuperDuper folks told me this wouldn't work, but I figured, worst case, I'd have to rebuild the new computer's boot drive from the supplied disks. Fortunately this wasn't necessary.

  • Can't Migrate from G4 to Intel Mac Mini

    Hi
I have been unable to migrate files from my old G4 destop to my new Intel Mac mini. I wonder if anyone could help.
I first tried first using the migration assistant on the Mac mini and used the G4 as a fire wire drive. Failed twice, the process froze both times.
Erased Intel Mac mini and tried to do a restore from G4 using Disk Utilty. Failed twice. Didn't complete process.
I then tried the same twice using Supe Duper. Completed process (took hours) but in both cases couldn't boot Mac mini. Get the folder icon on boot indicating can't find system (I think).
I though I would then clean re-install system files from restore disks that came with MIni mac and start a fresh, but won't allow me to do this !! Spent two days and no further forward.
    Any suggestions ?
Would erasing Mac mini and and trying Carbon Copy Cloner work ?
Can I add files manually from G4 to mac mini ?
    Thanks in advance.
G4 ibook. G4 desktop, mac mini (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Exactly which model G4 tower do you have? The
PCI-graphics G4 towers do not support FireWire Target
    Disk Mode.
If FWTDM works, have you replaced the hard drive that
came with the G4? Technically, Apple claims FWTDM
will only work with the OEM (original) hard drive
that came with the G4 tower. If you've replaced it or
added a second drive, it might not work correctly in
    "target" mode.
If you do have a new hard drive, you should be able
to put it into a FireWire (or USB) external hard
drive case and use the Migration/Setup Assistant to
    copy your files over.
If you're still having trouble, you can copy your
files over manually. Do you know which files you're
interested in copying? If your G4 tower works in
"target" mode, but the Migration/Setup Assistant is
having trouble, you can usually just drag all the
files and folders from your user's old home folder to
the new folders on the new computer. (Macintosh
    HD/Users/YourUserName/Pictures > NewMacintosh
    HD/Users/YourUserName/Pictures)
