Migration to 10.6 server from 10.5.8 - Kerberos issue

Hello,
I'm trying to migrate a 10.5.8 PPC Server on to a new 10.6 Intel server. The machine looks after our managed preferences for our Macs, so it's an Open Directory master.
The new 10.6 machine has a fresh install of 10.6 server. It has been joined to our Active Directory and I am promoting it to an OD master. I was going down the road of using the OD backup/archive from the old 10.5.8 machine, and importing/restoring this on to the 10.6 machine using the 'Merge' option. If I do this, all of my computers and groups appear and clients are managed, however in the Kerberos section of Server Admin it lists the Kerberos realm as the name of the old machine. I had found some instructions online which say you can destroy the Kerberos settings then re Kerberise the server by clicking "Kerberise" in server admin, but this option is not there once I trash the old Kerberos settings.
So, is there a way to use the backup archive from the old server and somehow replace/make it forget the old hostname?
or
Is there a better way to do this?
Any advice welcome

Hi Stephen
I've not seen a problem exporting from 10.5 to 10.6 . . . yet. I've had problems in the past going from 10.4 to 10.5 and 10.4 to 10.6 especially with Groups but not always. It seems 10.6 'handles' GUIDs and/or UIDs slightly differently to previous iterations of the server. I've also seen problems with imported Groups and ACLs. Whenever I delve deeper though I never see anything obvious. The 'cure' is to recreate the Groups. I would not be surprised if you had to do the same for Computer Groups? Not that much hassle as typically in an AD-OD Integrated environment there are not that many OD Groups nesting AD Users/Groups. The Computer Groups is the 'biggy' I suppose although again in most AD-OD Integrated environments there's generally only one or two, possibly three. Mostly there's just one. In my experience macs are usually outnumbered 10 or 20 to 1 anyway. From my point of view exporting Computer Groups is not something I generally do. Although this does depend on the environment.
Apart from the slight problem with MCX at hardware is login successful?
Some questions for you:
Was the 10.5 Server itself an update of a previous version of the Server?
Have the clients been updated to 10.6 or are they a new build?
If they were updated did you remove any bindings prior to running the update?
Did you strip out any Managed Preferences beforehand?
In an environment like yours updating the server OS in my experience is generally not the problem. If there are problems it invariably turns out to be with the client OS or the Windows environment due to a recent update/upgrade. With that in mind I've always tried to start with a clean client OS that has no 'knowledge' of what went before. That way there's less likelihood of anything 'hanging' around that may cause a problem. Generally I would plan to do this during the summer break when there's plenty of time to test and test again. However if you're under pressure to get this done quickly then you can't really wait.
HTH?

  • Migrate Sun One application server from One Server to Another

    Dear all,
We need to migrate the Sun ONE application from Sun Ultar server to Sun Fire 210. Please share with me if any one done the migration.
    Thanks & Regards
    Arun

I am sorry. My question was poorly worded after some hours of frustration. What I am really trying to do is develop a base virtual machine snapshot with Sun Web Server Loaded and a base set of applications.
When the need arises, I need to deploy another VM and start it up. There seems to be some issue with the host name of the VM and the administration server, or something. It is my impression that as longs as I have everything contained in one directory like /webserver, I should be able to copy everything to a new machine and start it up. I know I need the listeners listening on all ip addresses and the jdk being used would need to be in that directory as well. Is there anything I am missing here or that I need to watch out for?

  • Newbie question: any tips on preparing to migrate to 10.5 Server from local

    accounts?
here's the situation: i have a client that has about 15 Mac users, all of them are on 10.5 and they all have local user accounts.
this company shares their network and file sharing resources with another company on the same floor that is all windows based. the file servers are windows based.
my client is trying to separate itself from the other company and one of the things it is interested in is setting up an Xserve with 10.5 Server running.
the client wants to be able to manage software updates and resources for his users. he also wants to have a Mac Server set up for file sharing instead of sharing a windows server with the other company.
i am new to setting up 10.5 Server (or any other version) so i am not sure what i need to do before setting this up, or migrating. i think it i had to set this up from scratch i could but since they already have local user accounts and file sharing already set up, i am not sure how to get started.
i guess my main concern is getting all the local user accounts into Work Groups with out anyone losing any data.
    any help is appreciated.
    thanks!

I can't think of why there would be any problem moving an image over since they are both powerPC. Since the time machine restore didn't work how about putting the G5 in target disk mode and using something like carbon copy cloner to image the g5s hard drive.

  • How to migrate DNS, DHCP Server from 2003 to 2012

    Hi all,
I have one old server running server 2003, and i need to migrate the dns and dhcp server to server 2012.
I found all the articles, there are only migrate from 2003 to 2008 or 2008 to 2012.
Is there anyway to migrate it?
    Thanks.

Really confused why the "answer" to this thread states it can't be done, when clearly it can.  This is the official approach (article dated Oct 2013):
Migrate DHCP Server to Windows Server 2012 R2
Within, you'll see that it says:
This guide provides instructions for migration of a DHCP server from a server that is running Windows Server 2003 or a later operating system to a server running Windows Server 2012 R2. Supported operating systems are listed in the following table.

  • Anyone successfully migrated an existing DSfW server to an OES11SP1 server using the new migration wizard ?

See above - I do not want to be the first one.
    W. Prindl

I had a very bad experience migrating a simple file server from OES2SP3
    32-bit to OES11 (without SP).
So I am a little bit cautious.
I want to migrate a single DC DSfW server (OES2SP3 32-bit) in a multi
server edir tree to a new OES11SP1 server. The only thing which runs in
addition to DSfW on this server is an iprint server, which shall be
    migrated, too.

  • Question on Migrating SAP server from one system to another

    Hello SAP Gurus
I need your expert advice with the following issue.
We have ECC6.0 and Enterprise Portal installed on a windows 2003 server with 4 gig memory for demo work (Pre-sales).
Lately we are seeing lots of performance issues and so would like migrate to a faster server.  Keeping the budget in mind
we would like to go for Windows-7 64 bit so that we can have atleast 8 gig memory and about 250 gig disc space.
How easy is to migrate from the old server to the new server without losing any data that we have created (lots of custom BAPIs and Tables etc.,)
Is it as simple as install the new server and then create the transport request package of BAPIs and TABLES on the old system and import it into the new server OR is there any thing else that I need to be looking for.  Also, is Windows-7 64 Bit a supported platform for SAP.
I am sure lots of you have already done this and might have acquired good knowledge. I would appreciate if you can please share that with me.
    Thanks
    Ram

    Hi Prasad,
I am not sure whether Windows-7 64 bit is a supported platform or not. Please check that in PAM (Product Availability Matrix).
Apart from that the thing you are trying to achieve is not much of a complex activity. By means of System Copy you can achieve what you are trying to do. System Copy is the building of a new system on the new platform using an existing offline database and moreover keeping the SID same. This will retain all of your data (Custom BAPIs and tables and all those) and save you from tedious activity of creating innumerable transport requests and importing them.
Please visit SAP Service market place for System Copy Guide. By the way can you let us know is the current platform is also 64 bit?
Let us know if you have any more concerns.

  • Can you upgrade from 1.3.0.20 small ovf to 2.1 without migrating to a new server? It sounds like you can just adjust the server settings now.

Can you upgrade from 1.3.0.20 small ovf to 2.1 without migrating to a new server? It sounds like you can just adjust the server settings now. I am currently running 1.3.0.20 and I have enough to do with also needing to upgrade my wlc to 7.4.121.0 and getting the MSE up to 7.4.121.0 without having to stand up a new server if I don't have to. Please share any information you have in regards to your experience with coming from a version 1.2-1.3 small ovf and going to 2.1.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

You are better off standing up a new server.  It's cleaner and safer..... you can always try to upgrade if you wish, but if things don't work out well, then you just wasted a lot of time.  Snapshot the VM and export the floor plans, just in case.  The ova is built around the DB size, so I don't know how well the DB will perform if you try to expand memory or drive space after an upgrade.

  • Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system?

So, I've purchased a Mac mini to replace my aging Mid 2009 mini on which I've been running Mavericks Server.  In trying to answer the question of how best to move services from the old machine to the new, I've stumbled into the fact that Migration Assistant can apparently migrate not just user data for workstations and laptops, but also service data for servers.  The problem is there isn't much detail in the docs about how good a job it does when going from one machine to another without changing OS releases.  There's a very detailed document in the KB about going from older versions of Server to new (OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server) and a general doc on migrating from another Mac under Mavericks (OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks) but that has no details about Server.
Has anyone used Migration Assistant to move services from one system running Server to a new system?  Are there any details that are particularly important to get right?  Are there things that require manual steps after Migration Assistant is done?
There are other ways I could tackle the problem, of course.  I could simply swap drives between the systems, but the new system has two drives that are bigger, faster, and I intend to mirror them.  That would complicate such an approach.  I'd really like to keep the conversation constrained to a discussion of Migration Assistant as the primary method.

yes. I migrated a server frm lion to mavericks following these notes a while back:
OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Mountain Lion
i do not recall having any problems with it.

  • Migrate MOSS 2007 Server from Server 2003 (32-bit) to Server 2008

I have a client with MOSS 2007 installed on Windows Server 2003, and a database server (SQL 2005) also on Server 2003. they have two new Windows Server 2008 servers, and they wish to do a migration.  They have custom Features, including Event Receivers
    installed in their environment.
Do I need to install the 32-bit edition of MOSS 2007 on the new server in order to be able to use the pre-compiled custom Features used in the current server?
My plan is to do the following:
    (a)  Migrate databases from current database server (SQL 2005) to new database server (SQL 2008),
    (b)  Re-assign SQL redirection to new database server (the database was previously on the same box as the WFE, and this was separated out last year to another server, but redirecting the SQL Server,
    (c)  Install MOSS 2007 (32-bit) on the other new server
    (d)  Patch both instances of MOSS 2007 to the same point
    (e)  Create (dummy) site collection on new server, and install all custom Features on server
    (f)  Add new server to existing Farm
    (g)  Remove previous server from Farm
What must I do to install existing custom Features on new server?
Is there anything that I have left out of the process?  Do I need to do anything about the SSP running on the current server?

    Thanks Keith for your reply.
Even is USMT does not work, we are ok. SMIGdeploy will be helpful.
Basically, want MDT to run some scripts on the Windows 2003 server, post which install Windows 2012 and join it to the existing domain with the same computer name.
Then hydration kit to help with the installation of features etc. Also, we would like to take a complete backup to a WIM before migrating.
I am sure this is workable.

    Hi,
I have done somthing similar in the past. Basically i got exported all the scopes and settings from the linux dhcpd service, then created the scopes in Windows, stop linux dhcp service and start windows one. Use conflict detection setting to leverage any

  • How to migrate application server from Tomcat to WebSphere?

    Hi,
I installed BO XI 3.1 32 bit in environment:
    - AIX 5.3 64 bit
    - Deployed Tomcat 5.5 from installing BO
    - Oracle client 10G
I need to migrate application server from Tomcat to WebSphere 6.1 and WebSphere 6.1 Server 32 bit in Windows platform.
Could you someone give detail steps
Many thanks in advance and best regards,

I tried manually to deploy web applications, but not successful. This is my deployment step following:
    AIX 5.3: BOE XI 3.1 :
Copy all <INSTALLDIR>/bobje/enterprise120/java/applications/  to Windows Websphere D:\BO_WAS
    WebSphere 6.1 location & IP (windows) :
    C:\Program Files\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer1\
    IP: 192.168.69.10
Log in to WebSphere Applicaton Server Administrative http://192.168.69.10:9060/admin
    1. Under the Applications heading of the console navigation menu, click
Enterprise Applications on the left navigational pane.
    2. Click the Install button and navigate to the location of the WAR file to
deploy. If deploying from a remote file system, select the Remote File
    System option.
    3. Enter a context root for the WAR file (e.g. /CmcApp for CmcApp.war)
(this format (/CmcApp) for Unix OS, have different in Windows ? Could you give me fully path?)
    and
press the Next button, followed by Continue.
    4. In "Step 1", give a unique name for your web application and proceed to
    "Step 2".
    5. Highlight the server you created (or highlight server1 if you didn't create
your own) from the Clusters and Servers and enable the Select
    checkbox. Proceed to "Step 3".
    6. Select the virtual host you created (or default_host if you didn't create
your own) from the Virtual Host drop-down list. Proceed to "Step 4".
    7. Review the summary page, and press Finish when done.
    8. Click Save to Master Configuration.
    9. Click the Save link, then the Save button.
Finally the output is not available.
Many thanks in advance and best regards
