  • Mac OS (10.6.4) with Windows Server 2008 file shares, kernel errors

We experience problems with the Windows enviroment and around 15 Apple computers running MacOS 10.6.4. All Macs are Mac Pro and bought just before the hexacore series.
Problem 1: At random times the network is really slow, finder can't display the items in a SMB share. The shares are located on a Server 2008.
Problem 2: When a file is openend, there is a lock file on the share. When the document is saved and closed, the lockfile isn't removed directly. This causes problems when people reopen the document too fast and get a read-only document because the file is allready in use.
I tried to copy a 80GB file from a Ubuntu (created with /dev/null) to the Mac. There are no problems copying it from Ubuntu with rsync.
Then I moved the 80GB file to the server share, these errors came up:

    Can anyone help?

Problems arrised when Mac OS 10.6 got installed
Previously we used 10.4 with ADMitMac

This might relate to you as you are using a Windows 2008 Server with Mac clients.
Apparently there seems to be an issue with SMB, since Microsoft rolled out SMB 2.0 with Windows 2008 Server. According to Microsoft, SMB 2.0 is supposed to solve world hunger and bring peace to the middle east, but in reality, it just puts up more road blocks for non-Microsoft platforms. Check out this article I found:
    http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-disable-smb-2-on-windows-vista-or-server-2008.htm
Currently we have an issue with all 40 of our Macs not being able to save files properly to the Windows 2008 file server due to what the message claims to be a permission issue, but in reality it seems like something to do with the SMB protocol. We are investigating the issue and will see in a few days if the problem can be resolved by disabling SMB 2.0 on Windows 2008 Server.
Let us know if this problem resolves your problem as well. You never know how many other issues can be caused by a twitchy SMB protocol.

  • How do Dual Monitor with my Mac Book Pro (Boot camped with Windows 8) through my mini display port VIA Thunderbolt to a iMac (Model Mid 2011)?

So I have a Mac Book Pro with a bootcamp Windows 8. I dual monitor on the Mac side with my Mid 2011 iMac through my mini display port via thunder bolt cable. In my perfect world, I would be able to switch to the Windows side and have the iMac mirror or extend my windows display for my gaming pleasure, etc. I'm not sure if it's just a simple driver or that it cannot be done. Please help. Thanks.

  • Mac PDF's not compatible with Windows

Has anyone had a problem creating PDF files in OS 10.5.1 that can be read by others? Specifically I have created PDF's both by "printing" and by saving as PDF using Preview, and the files open fine on a Mac (using Preview at at least), but when I send these files to a Windows PC they cannot be opened by using either Acrobat Reader 8 or ABBY PDF Creator, both indicating that the files are corrupted. I am assuming at this point that this may have something to do with the fact that there is no version of Acrobat or Reader yet compatible with OS 10.5 . Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.
    marc

I use PDFs I've created on my macs (both have 10.5.1) on several windows XP machines at work. Apple's PDF solutions are different from Adobe, so the compatibility does not have to do with the availability of Adobe software. Still, one option would be to get "Adobe PDF" installed as a printer (not sure where it comes from -- maybe Reader, or with the CS3 suite) and then use that to print to PDF instead of using Apple's system technology. Still, it should be concerning that the system's PDFs are not being created properly. Do the PDFs open properly on other Macs? Have you tried multiple PCs?

  • Originally formatted for Mac, now need to use with Windows....

I have a 1st Gen iPod Mini that I had formatted and used (rarely) with my Mac. I now want to wipe it clean and sync it to my iTunes for Windows (7.0.1.8). I am using a brand new Apple Dock Connector to USB 2.0 since my PC isn't able to handle the Firewire cable the Mini came with.
I connected my Mini to my PC (new Dell laptop) and it pops up a dialogue box stating that the iPod appears corrupted and advised Restoring and/or disconnecting and reconnecting. I reconnected and that did not fix. I then tried to Restore and got this error: "Problem downloading software; requested resource not found".
I CAN see my iPod in iTunes. I've read a number of different links but I'm at a loss. I think that what I need to do is reformat my Mini to use iTunes for Windows but can't seem to get that far. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is...suprise...supposed to be a holiday gift for someone! Thanks.

  • Trying to access Mac networked printer from laptop with Windows XP

    Hi
I'm stuck: I have printer sharing enabled on my G5, printer is connected to my router; from system pref/print & fax/ my URL for the printer is as follows:
    mdns://myprinter+serial#.printer.tcp.local.
    Windows wants this format
    http://printservername/Printers/sharename/.printer
I've tried any number of permutations, and can't get the printer to show up in the printer wizard. I installed the software/drivers in the PC for the specific printer.
I'm just not a PC user, and can't figure this out!

Find the IP address of the mac in Network Prefs.
Find the Mac's queue name for that printer in Print & Fax > highlight printer > Get Info (Show Info).
On the PC, add new printer, and add the printer exactly as you were trying, filling in IP address for "printserver_name" and queue name for "share_name." Don't need the "/.printer" part. For driver, you'll need to choose a postscript printer model driver, even if that printer isn't a postscript one. The Mac will translate the postscript to the printer's language. Apple Color Laserwriter xx/xx worked well for me.

  • Mac Messenger 7 Video Chat with Windows Platform?

    Hi,
I know this might be kind of off topic, but I have Office 08 and with all the updates it has Messenger 6 installed. I have noticed Messenger 7 on the Microsoft webpage.
My question is that, once I install Messenger 7, will I be able to have video & voice chat's with users on the Windows platform?

It appears to read that you also need Office Communications Server installed on a server (presumably a Windows one)

  • 2011 Mac Book Pro shuts down with weird striped lines out of nowhere

What is the problem? Is there a fix for this without spending a ton of money?  Im reading some people having to spend like 300 bucks to fix the issue only for the issue to come back, is this true?

first if you are getting message that your battery needs service, you want to get it looked at either by going to apple store or service provider.
try doing an SMC reset, the following article tells how:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after this reset restart the computer and see if it works normally if it doesn't see below.
second regarding the restart of your computer, it could be a kernel panic. the following article tells how to troubleshoot this issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
if after following this article the mac continues to restart try running the apple hardware test to see if there is a hardware issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
if none of the above steps resolve your issue i would take to apple store or service provider to have it serviced.

  • Mac OS X still usable with windows installed?

Is it possible for you to use the Apple stuff on an imac like safari, photo booth, imovie, pages, etc. if you have microsoft office installed on the imac?

You may be under the impression that installing Windows replaces OSX. It does not. Once you install Windows using Bootcamp, you can select to boot into Windows or OSX. If you select to boot into OSX your computer will be no different than it was prior to installing Windows. If you select to boot into Windows your computer will behave as a Windows computer. So each time you turn on your computer you select whether you want to use OSX or Windows.

  • ThinkPad vs. MacBook Pro: IBM Launches Pilot Program for Migrating to Macs

I have just found this great article about IBM starting to use MacBook Pros. Wow!
If you are considering between a MacBook Pro and a Lenovo ThinkPad, then consider no longer. Even IBM, the creator of ThinkPads, is now migrating to Macs. This is great stuff. Check it out!

  • Migrating to Mac Pro from Windows intensive GIS modelling only in WinXP..

    Hi all,
I have some cash for a new workstation and have been pondering moving to a Mac as I am frustrated with Windows for som many reasons. I am a scientist who does a lot of modelling, luckily software such as R is available on Mac so I am happy with that. However, I am stuck with some windows dependency due to ArcGIS which is windows only.
    I have several questions:
    1. I have a couple of existing machines that have cheapo PCI-E Sil3132 RAID cards that run RAID 0 on two 1TB disks as swap. It should be possible to use this in Bootcamp no problems as Windows has drivers for it, but could I access this array through OSX and importantly, through Parallels so I could use the Mac and Windows at the same time?
    2. I have several external arrays that use the ESATA connection from some RAID cards, however, these are all in NTFS format. Can I read/write to these disks in OSX? I am confused by an abundance of posts which say yes, no but yes in Snow Leopard..
    3. Reading people's comments, it is widely accepted to steer clear of the Mac RAID card as it is overpriced. Is it also not compatible with Windows?
    4. Do you guys think it is worth it to move? I could just go down the PC route again and get a similar spec machine as to the Mac Pro, but I can't tell you how much Windows upsets me sometimes.
Any advice at all is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    A

Dual boot though makes things more complex and doesn't sound like running Windows programs in a VM is going to help.
Therefore a lot to convert, consider, and limitations.
Don't know how well if at all Parallels 6 will work with your arrays.
Swap. Put your system on an SSD, be sure to have enough RAM, because Mac OS and users avoid swapping and pageouts like the plague.
A Mac Pro can be a fine Windows only system, suitable almost, and similar to others that use Xeon processor.
Burn out hits everyone, but maybe if you could get past that and build a new system from ground up that meets your needs and expectations, that would be easier.
NTFS write ability is not hard to add, but is not native to OS X either.
Disclaimer: I run my Mac Pro as Windows 99% and have played around with some PC controller cards and Mac controller cards, and there is always trouble with cross platform.
As for Mac Pro, $4k+ for 3.33GHz 6-core 3 x 8GB RAM buys a lot of hardware, and in PC realm something that can be clocked much higher and more RAM...

  • How can I obtain a complete Time Machine backup (about 300 GB), with Windows 7-Parallels Desktop, without the system re-booting automatically?

I have been operating my MacBook Pro 15" (Mac OS 10.7.5), with Windows 7 - Parallels Desktop, for about one and one-half years.  However, whenever I execute a Time Machine back-up, and leave the system to complete the process, I return only to find that my system has re-booted, long before the back-up is completed.  I do not use the auto-backup feature because I do not see how to change the shedule for backups away from the default schedule of hourly backups (too my stain on performance).  Is there something that I am missing in setting up for such a back-up?  I am currently operating away from home, using wi-fi for Internet access.
    Appreciatively, Arbyem
