Migration to Time Capsule

Is there any way to move my time machine history (back-ups to November 07) to my new Time Capsule, so I preserve the history and can free up the old hard drive?

Not that I'm aware of. If you really need them you will need to hang onto that 'old hard drive' I'm afraid.

You should be able to change the permissions on the files.. this is yet another bungle by Mavericks I suspect.

Sometimes it is because you Migrated wrongly.

It is not up to Mavericks because sadly the guy who wrote all this great info died recently.

  • Migration of TIME capsule backups

How do I migrate the old files to new TC so that I do not lose my previous revision history? (I bought a new 1TB time capsule to replace an old 500GB TC. I also want to start using the new larger TC by itself, and don't want to wipe the old TC files.

    Information is in here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Lots of info there so I copy pasted the necessary part below. It's almost at the very bottom of the article.
Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive
If you upgrade to a new hard drive with a larger capacity, you may want to transfer your existing Time Machine backups to it before using it for regular backups.  To keep your existing backups on your new, larger backup hard drive, follow these steps:
    Connect your new hard drive.
In Disk Utility, make sure it has a GUID partition and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  If needed, reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article.  Note: Back up any data on the hard drive before you format it.
Select the new drive's icon on the desktop and choose Get Info from the File menu.
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is not enabled.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
In Finder, double-click the current backup hard drive to open its Finder window.
Drag the folder "Backups.backupd" to the new hard drive.
Enter an administrator user name and password, then click OK to start the copying process.  This may take some time to complete because all your backups will be copied.
In Time Machine System Preferences click "Select Disk…"
Select your new hard drive, then click "Use for Backup."
Now, on your new hard drive, you will have all of your existing backups from the previous backup hard drive plus have more room for more new backups.
Time Capsule, Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later: How to transfer your back up from an existing Time Capsule to a new oneFor this process, you should leave your computer in the same room as the Time Capsules, or use one Ethernet cable to connect your Mac to the Ethernet port on the existing Time Capsule, then use another Ethernet cable to connect from the existing Time Capsule to the new Time Capsule.
Configure your Time Capsule for your network. See the documentation that came with your Time Capsule for information about setting it up on your network.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
    Open a Finder window.
Locate both Time Capsules listed in the SHARED section of the navigation pane on the left of the Finder window.  Note: If you do not see your Time Capsules in that section, choose Preferences from the Finder menu and make sure "Connected servers" is checked under SHARED.
Select the name of the new Time Capsule in the navigation pane. The default name is "Time Capsule xxxxxx", with xxxxxx being the last digits of the ID printed on the bottom of the Time Capsule.
Mount the volume by double-clicking the name of the volume in the Finder window's main section. The default drive name is "Data".
Open a new Finder window by pressing Command-N, or by choosing File > New Finder Window.
Repeat the previous 2 steps with the other Time Capsule, to mount it.
Drag your backup disk image from the current Time Capsule to the new Time Capsule. This can take some time to complete because your entire backup will be copied.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Click "Select Disk...", then select your new Time Capsule.
Perform a Time Machine back up.
After the back up, you can remove the Ethernet cables if desired and configure your wireless network to your liking.

  • Migration assistant + time capsule

    Hello,
I'm having the following problem: I'm trying to run migration assitant to tranfer data from a Time Capsule backup to a new Macbook Pro (Mountain Lion).
As soon as I reach the "select system" screen, I select the backup disk, press continue, and then nothing happens.
Continue button becomes deactivated and migration assitant gets stuck.
Does anyone have an idea why this happens? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Can you mount the actual disk in Finder..
When you use a different Mac to the one that is used to make the backup you might need to use a different method.
See our expert pondini's comments about using a different Mac.
    Q17 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
But read through 14-17.. restoring backups to a different OS from what was used to produce the backup can be tricky as well.

  • Migration assistent/Time capsule/mail

I just bought a Macbook Pro and wanted to migrate all my data from my iMac to the new Macbook Pro. First time I tried to migrate all my data from a time capsule backup everything went well, but Mail didn't respond. I thought it was because I had Snow Leopard on my iMac. Then I bought OS X Lion to the iMac, made a new backup with time capsule and then tried to migrate everything again. I got the message that the migration went well. I migrated 2 accounts but on one of them mail doesn't respond at all. Does anyone can help me on that?!

I just realised that the problem started on my iMac. I was so sure that mail was working properly before I did the backup. Now I can't access Time Machine to get back to when mail was working.

  • Migration using Time Capsule

I'm planning for a new MacBook Pro and looking for alternatives to firewire for migration assistant. I remember one option being connect to Time Capsule last time round.
What are the pro's and cons of using a time machine back up and USB connection to Time Capsule to accomplish my next migration, if my new MacBook Pro no longer has firewire. Is there any advantage to connecting TC versus directly to my MBP?

FireWire will be much faster than your TC. You also can't partition your TC without hacking around a bit.
At least the TC can be placed in a different room, giving you more of a backup insurance policy due to a Flood/Fire, etc.

  • Migration assistant/Time Capsule-TM/ Superduper transfer

What would be easier: I am getting a new replacement iMac from Apple after I send back the iMac being replaced. Presently I use Superduper (back up software) to back up my system from my present imac to a FW 800 external hard drive. I also have a new Time Capsule that I have not set up for TM transfers yet since I'm getting the new iMac soon as was waiting for that to arrive to set up the Time Capsule: Would the Time Capsule be a superior way to transfer everything If I hooked it up to the Imac about to be replaced and backed everything up or can I transfer from the Maxtor to the new iMac after arrival. In the past I did Mac-Mac transfers but Apple requires me to send out the faulty (LCD screen) iMac before they send the new replacement. Sorry about the verbose query! It's late here in NYC. dennis

Afaik you could do either. Obviously it would be quicker to use your superduper backup not just because you already have it backed up, but also because the transfer back from your external drive will be MUCH quicker than from a timecapsule.
Your other option would be to setup the time capsule now, take your first back up then return the machine. When the new one arrives, during the initial setup you can chose to restore from a time machine backup there. I guess it comes down to when you want to do the waiting? Before you get your new machine or after =)

  • Airport Extreme migration to Time Capsule

I just got my new TC and want to change my current wireless network and Internet access from AP Xtreme to TC. Any important tips or advice I should have before beginning? Do I set up a new Network or just migrate? I currently use Time Machine to back up to an external hard drive and have a MacBook Pro on the network. Do I have to connect my printer to the TC to use it on the network? The MacBook Pro currently prints wirelessly on the network I have set up and I really don't want to change that. I also have a brand new iMac 27" that isn't set up yet. Would I be better off to set these up together or set one up and then the other? I think I've got too much new stuff!

You should be able to copy your settings from the AEBS to the TC. Run AirPort Utility and choose Save a Copy As to save a local profile. Then quit, turn off the AEBS, set up and turn on the new TC. Run AirPort Utility again and this time use the Import feature to load your saved profile.
You should be able to connect your printer to the TC and use it just like you did with the AEBS. If you want to you can join the AEBS and TC together (either with ethernet or wirelessly). It's up to you.
I don't think it matters if you set your new Mac up at the same time or not.
    Enjoy your new toys!

  • Trouble migrating from time capsule back-up

I am hoping to migrate data from a time machine back-up to a new mac. I connected the back-up disk (which backs up multiple computers) and initiated the migration assistant. Unfortunately, when I get to the point of selecting which details I wish to transfer, I am directed to a back-up from a different machine. How can I redirect the migration to use a different back-up file? I tried to copy my target back-up into the backups.backupdb folder but I do not have permissions to do this.

Read through Q14-17 here. So you can understand how to use TM.

  • Getting an error 150:30 message on CS4 after migration from time capsule to new MacBook Pro

Getting a constant error message... deleted the files stated in the forum and tried to run the LicenceRepair but nothing is happening... ran the .py file in teminal but still getting the error message... My MacBook is running OSX 10.9.3

Sorry, but Apple's Migration feature doesn't work with Adobe applications.
    1. Use the Cleaner tool to remove what you copied onto your computer:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
    2. Install CS4 from your original install discs, or from your back of the CS4 install files.

  • Migration Assistant won't recognize my Time Capsule's sparse-bundle so I can migrate to my new iMac

    Background.......
iMac (intel core duo) hard drive crashed while backing up to time capsule. Had Snow Leopard OS 10.6 (100% up-to-date)
    2.   Purchased new iMac with Lion. 100% updated.
    3. Want to migrate from Time Capsule to new iMac
    Problem.......
    4.  Migration Assistant does not see (recognize) my sparsebundle, message says it's "possible that it is in use."  But it's not of course.
    5.  If I mount the Time Capsule from the Finder, I can see the sparsebundle I want to migrate. So, it present but the Migration Assistant doesn't see it!
    6. Time Capsule recognizes the sparsebundle of my other Mac (#2) that backs up to the same Time Capsule
    Question.......
What do I have to do to get Migration Assistant to recognize my sparsebundle so I can migrate to my new iMac?
    Thanks

I finally solved the problem by disconnecting the Time Capsule ethernet cable from the internet.  Then the sparsebundle suddenly appeared.

  • Login Error after installing Lion and migrating from time machine

I cannot log into Lion under my user setting, I am getting the error: "You are unable to login to the File Vault User account {name} at this time."
Apparently I did not turn off file vault before upgrading to Lion and when I set up Lion I did not migrate from time capsule because it was not finding it even thought the firewire was plugged in so I went ahead and filled out my name and set up a password. I was in Lion and attached the external drive and finally it read it so I migrated the information. I'm not sure if I didn't check the transfer "user" box or the Lion password does not match my File Vault password but now I cannot get into Lion.
I contacted Apple Support and they told me I would not be able to access my old user info because it is locked. I tried to reinstall Lion and get back to the screen where it prompts me for a password so I could change it to my file vault password and cannot get back to that screen. I also cannot create a new user - I can only use guest.
I tried reset password from the terminal and this did not work.
Is there any way I can do a clean Lion install and try the migration again to make sure the passwords and user box is checked?
    Please help... I'm desperate!

You say Downloads folder has never been excluded and you can't find the Downloads Folder.  Do this... OpenFinder then in Finder select your Downloads Folder, open Time Machine if your Downloads Folder has been backed up, Time Machine will take you directly to your Downloads Folder backups.

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • Do I need to resize the sparsebundle file after migrating to new larger AirPort Time Capsule?

Just upgraded my Airport Time Capsule from an old 1TB to a new 2TB version.
I have migrated the sparse.bundle file by using the ethernet method but now I want to know if I need to resize the file using Disk Utility or does it happen automatically? If it doesn't resize automatically then Apple should at least have some option to automate this process as it seems a natural request.
Over time people would want to continue using their same old back up and just allow the file to get bigger as it is moved onto a newer larger device and still have access to all the previous old backups all on one device/system.

It should continue to resize automatically or would if Yosemite worked properly.. since TM in Yosemite is lousy it might well need you to fix it.. It isn't hard.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.
