Migration Utility Question RE: User accounts

Hi,
I bought a new Macbook Pro and set it up with myself as the user. There wasn't much data on it, I just used it to surf the net. Now I would like to give it to my daughter to replace her three year old MBP. She will use the Migration Utility to transfer all her programs etc. I have tried to find the answer here but haven't been able to. My question is, will migration replace my user account with her's or will mine remain and her's be added as a new one? Probably best to start from scratch? Thanks

Thanks for the help..Now the problem is finding the correct cable. The old machine has a different firewire port than the new one. It looks like she needs a 6pin to 9pin..no one in Dallas has it..! We tried ethernet but it is looking for a network.

Can someone tell me how to migrate my Suse Linux user accounts, including mail, to mac os x moutain lion?

You need write a script to map your /etc/passwd database to the values in MacOS. Use the dscl command like here: http://www.deadmarshes.com/Blog/20111105010130.html or here: http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=141798
You can't take the /etc/shadow, because MacOS encrypts the passwords other than Linux.
Your users need to change their password:
    - via Webinterface from Mountain Lion
    - or via Server.app
    - or on a linux client using the OpenDirectory (LDAP) from ML
Each mail user needs to belong to the group com.apple.access_mail. You can configure with ML-tools any forwards. Tools: Server.app (Appstore), WorkGroupManager (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1567)
I'm migrated/migrating my users from Solaris LDAP. I'm using this technology.
Migrating the Mail system is an other task.

  • HT3224 Migration created a new user account on my new MacBook, increasing the space used. Any solution?

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro. Using the migration assistant, I transfered my old backed up (using the Time Machine) things to the new MacBook Pro. It  created another user account with the old Administrator ID. This about doubled the space usage on my machine and sort of slowed down the machine. There are no Apple Stores in my area and the machine was brought from the UK. So how do I solve the space problem?

Thanks Neil. What I did before asking the question was simslar to what you suggested. I logged in with the new account, went to the Users&Groups pane, clicked on the other sccount and asked to delete. Which it did. With the older MacBook Pro and under Disk Utilities the space used was about 160 GB. With the new MacBook Pro and after the delete, the Disk Utility is giving me used space as 322.22GB (a difference of 150 GB all things considered). That I think was a substacial increase and I want to figure out why. May be I did something wrong?
Your help is very much appreciated.

  • How do I migrate from a former user account on an external drive after a clean install?

This question has been partially answered before but not to my satisfaction and, from what I've found, not for Mountain Lion.
My MBPr was running fine for a week after I transfered my User account to an external drive. After some reorganization I decided to move the acount to a different external drive. I blundered and, for whatever reason, was unable to log in to any account on my MBPr. Not even my backup account - which suprised me. (I tried repairing disks, permissions, etc...) I tried to resolve it on the phone with Apple to no avail. Finally, I gave up. I booted into recovery and did a reinstall. After 12 hours I came back to find that it wasn't a clean reinstall. And I still couldn't log in to anything.
I then did an erase and reinstall. After another 12 hours I now have a clean install of Mountain Lion on my MBPr. I have an external drive with my former working user directory (Home:Users/mrmoose) on it. (BTW, It is LARGER than my internal SSD drive, it is not bootable, AND I have no backup of it in Time Machine format.)
My current user account is Macintosh HD:Users/bullwinkle
    1) Is there a way to "reclaim" my user account on the external drive - possibly without even copying or migrating?
    2) Can I copy the contents of bullwinkle (excluding some of my folders under Documents so it fits) to Macintosh HD Users/bullwinkle? Including the Library folder? I have audio plugins, etc...
I'd still like my User directory on an external drive. But I will settle for keeping it on the internal drive. I just want my info back.
Why, oh, why does Migration Assistant require your data to be in TIME MACHINE format only - why can one not migrate from a full copy on an external drive? Why can't it look at the darn thing and say, "Hey, that's a copy of an OSX User directory. I can migrate data from that."?
I would greatly appreciate a detailed response. THANK YOU. Lama Out.

~/Library is probably the one you don't want to move back because it may bring the issues back along with it.
All your own data you can drag & drop. You can drag the contents of any folder Movies, Music, Pictures, Documents (or as much as you want).
Rather than try to replace the Library you can take ~/Library/Application Support, Mail, Safari and any other folders you need.
To access your hidden ~/Library folder go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then you can drag it to the Sidebar for easy access.

  • Migration Assistant created new user account & can't delete it

Hi - I'm a new Mac user (MacBook Pro). I seem to have an extra account and am not sure why. Here's what happened:
I setup my MacBook Pro and did not run Migration Assistant at that time. I later ran Migration Assistant to migrate PC files to the MacBook. A second account was created after the migration. All my PC content is in the second account. None in the original account. When I look at the Users & Groups in System Preferences, I see that both accounts are Admin accounts.
I do not want the original account that was created for me on the MacBook Pro before I trasnferred any of my PC files over.  I just want to keep the account that was created to house all my PC files when they were migrated over.  However I cannot migrate that original account - the " - " is just greyed out.
Please can someone advise how I delete it.  I do not want two admin user acconts - just the onen with all my PC files in.
I realise I should have done the PC transfer at start up using "set up assistant" but for whatever reasons I chose to delay it by a day or so and hence used Windows Migration Assistant.
Please tell me how I can delete the surplus user account created for me originally when I used the Mac for the first time.
Thanks in advance for all feedback and advice.  This is my first Mac after 20 years of Windows, so big step for me and still learning!  So easy to understand instructions please would be bonus
    thanks all

Unfortunately I see that no one has been able to help me with this . . . so instead of addressing the question above. can someone please tell me how to reset my Mac to "factory settings", ie how it was the day I bought it and before I switched it on for the first time.  Delete everything on there now. That way I will do set up properly and transfer data from my PC first of all instead of revisiting it.
Please can someone tell me how to do this
    Many thanks

  • How do i transfer migrated files from one user account to another

Mac novice so please be kind!!!!

Was this transfer from a Windows PC to your new Mac?
It is that aspect of Migration Assistant that I find less than useful.  Even from one Mac to another, creating a new (old) account is like sorting through old boxes deciding what to put where. This is why I say MA is really only useful at the very outset where the account it creates is the one you will be using.
Anyway you have a whole lot of content in a different account that you want to move into your main account.
    Not the only way, but a good way is to drag the folders of files and photos into your desired main user account, putting them in to the Drop Box ;
Macintosh HD / Users / collies? / Public / Drop Box
Then log into your main account and collect them from the same location.
This method is a bit clunky but it will update the ownership permissions of the moved files to the extant account.
Set up your email in your new account from scratch.
For general information, the following link has a great deal for the novice.

  • Migration Assistant, now two user accounts

Hi, I've just purchased a Macbook Pro.  I've just completed the migration assistant and its transferred all my files, photos and itunes to my macbook but under a different user account to the one my computer was set up with.  Any ideas how I can merge the two (transfer the info over) and delete the second one?
    Many thanks, Louise

A = First user account created on the new machine (Admin)
B = User account migrated over (account status unknown)
1: Log into A and make sure B is a Admin user in System Preferences > Accounts
2: While in A, transfer files via the Users/Shared  folder
Programs usually are installed into the Applications folder for all accounts to use, but some have particular settings saved into each user account.
Best thing is to just use the program again and make new settings which get saved in User B.
Once you have everything up on A, then delete B from the System Preferences > Accounts.
    Optional: for more security,
it's best to create a new Admim user while logged into A, lets call it C, and then logging into C and changing A to Standard user from Admin, then using A all the time like normal.
It's a little more work involved using the computer when your accessing the Applicaitons folder (rarely), and having to manually check for updates, but your computer is much more secure as A is now a Standard User with little "powers" so in case something bad happens it can't do much to your computer (unless you give it your Admin password of course.)

  • HT4796 Migration has created another user account but I only want one.  How can I combine them?

    Hi everyobdy.  Mac Newbie here.
I have migrated my files from my old windows laptop to Macbook Pro using the Migration assistant.
All seemed to work Ok, but it appears I have also migrated my old user profile.  My Mac now has two users, one has the files, one doesn't.
Do I need to delete a user, or can I combine the two?  If so, how?
    Thanks,
    Steve

I would suggest logging in to the user account that has the files and deleting the one that doesn't. You can change your visible username later if you don't like the old one.
As to why such a thing would happen, i don't know.

  • System Image Utility / Automator Add User Account no default shell

I've noticed when creating a customized netrestore flow in System Image Utility for Yosemite, the result of the "Add User Account" action is a user missing a default shell. Noticed this when terminal kept closing as soon as it was opened. dscl -create localhost /Local/Default/Users/USERNAME UserShell /bin/bash fixed the issue but is obviously undesired for provisioning new computers. Any ideas how to configure a default shell for new users created in this way?

Solved by ensuring the add user account action immediately follows the define image source action.

  • When migrating from a pc to  macbook pro migration assistant caused multiple user accounts how do I get the data all in to one account now that it is migrated ?

I am switching over to apple from a PC platform and I have tried to use migration assistant to transfer the stuff on my PC to my macbook pro. When i tried the first time the two went to sleep due the long time required to transfer 13 GB of data and the transfer failed. I tried to transfer again only opting for some of the data  but when I did it created a second user account . I tried again and now I have transferred most of the data but I have it in three user accounts. Not what I wanted to do. Is there an easy fix for this or do Ineed to start from scratch ?

Open the Users folder on the internal drive, drag all of the other home folders to the desktop, and then move the files inside to the desired locations.

  • Migrated files and New User Account

    Hello,
New Mac user here.  I successfully migrated all the content from my old PC onto my Mac Mini and it was put into a new user account.  I'd like to transfer this content into the Admin account and delete the added user.  What's the best way to go about doing this?  Thanks so much!

Use Quicktime Player version 7 instead of Quicktime 10.
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • Migration assistant and 2nd user account

Yesterday I set up my new Mac Mini and used Migration Assistant to transfer files from my PC to my new Mac.
I can't now access the files as a 2nd user, as I am being prompted for a password. I can't remember setting a password for a 2nd user account. If I did it would be the same as my Administrators account.
Any suggestions on how I can access the 2nd user account?
I presume I will later on be able to transfer files from 2nd user account to my Mac account and then delete the 2nd user account.
I am a new Mac user.

From the main account on your Mac, the one you are now signed into, open a Finder window and go to the Users folder and right click on that second user account. Select Get Info from the list that comes up. When that opens scroll down to the bottom and click the small Lock icon and type in your Admin password. Once the lock icon is open click on the Plus ( + ) sign and add your current username, the one you are now logged into to the list for Sharing & Permissions and then  give it both Read & Write access. Then on the icon with the little gear and downward facing triangle click that and select Apply to Enclosed items. That will propagate those permission down to all folders and files in that second user account.
you should then be able to access all the folders in that second user account and copy those files over to your main account. Once you have done that you can go into User & Groups in System Preferences and delete, remove, that second account.

  • Question about user accounts

Setting up new mini with 10.6 installed. This is my second Mac, current system is eMac with 10.3. All files/media I want to save are backed up on ext. HD.
This time I want to set up an Administrator Acct. and another User Acct. (without Admin. access) for routine use. Did not know enough to do that the first time.
But, I want access to all the old files without ownership/privileges problems.
As I understand it, I can make the user acct. names the same as the names on my acct. on the old system and there should not be any problem? I have a reason for wanting to not do this, but certainly can and probably will, if that will work.
To help me understand all this, is the "short name" the real account name/identifier? In other words, can I make the user name anything I want as long as the "short name" is the same?

The info you have given has thrown me for a loop. As I stated in my reply to Scott I am really having trouble understanding this whole account/file ownership issue, although I thought I had it figured out and was seeking verification.
Regarding your info about copying files from an external drive, how/why does "ignore ownership on this drive" work?
"ignore ownership" makes all files on the external read+write by any user so there are no issues with permissions.
Did a lot of research on several Mac help sites before posting here. A common problem seems to be someone wanting/needing to change account name(s) on a system they will continue to use. Common advice given is:
    Create new account.
    Copy/transfer files to new account.
    Remove/delete old account.
How/why does that work without file ownership/permissions being a problem?
most files have read permissions by everybody when created so copying them from one account to another is not a problem. please read up on the basic permissions structure
    http://www.perlfect.com/articles/chmod.shtml
I understand that the real UID is a numeric code. How does the system arrive at that code?
the very first user account created on any mac has UID 501 by default. the next one 502 and so on.
It seems to me if I use the same, exact, account name(s), file ownership would not be an issue.
that's completely wrong. same account name doesn't help in any way at all. same user ID is what's checked.
for example when you create a file on an external drive and then move that drive to another computer if you access it from an account with the same user ID by a different user name it will show you as the owner.

  • Question about user accounts in multi domain scom design

    hello,
there is a root forest with 30 child domains. fully trusted. we want to have a MS in each of the child domains and RMS in the root. so each MS in child domains report to the RMS which holds the SQL as well. since we want to use a single account for all the
SQL and SCOM related tasks I would like to know what is the best method to achive this process?
I want to use a single (Domain User) account for all the SCOM and SQL related task in all of the child domains and management servers.
the design is scom 2007 r2.
    any ideas?

is that enough? I am worriyng about this account not to have enough access on SQL or SDK and ...
dos this user needs to be local admin on all management server although the management servers are joined to another domains?
    can you please clarify this.
