Mind-boggling ineptitude

All:
Recently completed the drill of upgrading to a new primary work computer, using all of the latest technology:  Windows 7, Intel I7 processor, 6 gigs ram, you get the idea.  Part of the upgrade was to Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended.  It took about 1.5 hours with Adobe tech support to walk through multiple iterations of the upgrade before the problem was escalated and finally solved with a provided product registration number that should not have been needed.  Great attention to detail, especially when purchasing a product upgrade directly from Adobe (what was I thinking?).  .
Fast forward a few days, during which Adobe Pro Extended seemed to be working as advertised.  No changes or upgrades were made to either IE8 or Adobe 9.  I go to open a web link through IE8 that should have opened up in Adobe.  Crashes both IE8 and Adobe 9.  Same thing happens when attempting to open any PDF file through IE8.  Hours spent speaking with Adobe tech support representative in far away land.  Absolutely no idea as to what the problem might be, no suggestions, just the same questions over and over again, with no meaningful help offered.  I speak to an unrelated IT representative who asks if I tried another browser.  Great idea.  I try Google Chrome and there is no indication of the problem and everything works just fine.
The questions that follow are:  i) has Adobe never heard of fatal problems with Adobe 9 Pro Extended interacting with IE8/Windows 7?  If so, why would Adobe not inform its tech support personnel that perhaps they should make that suggestion as their first recommendation, or maybe they just really like detaining people trying to make a living for hours so they can't do their job;  ii)  Is IE8 not the an extremely common browser, bundled with Windows 7, and should not Adobe 9, if it is to work correclty with ANY browser at least work properly with IE8?;  iii) Do Microsoft and Adobe simply have no interest in determining whether these very common applications are even capable of functioning together foe people who assume these software giants know what they are doing (realizing the absurdity of this proposition)?
At this point there is no indication that Adobe 9 will ever interact properly with IE8 when attempting to open a PDF file on-line.
Any thoughts, comments, or recommendations would be most appreciated.  Congratulations to Adobe on the fine work with 9 Pro Extended and its complete inability to interact with one of the most common pieces of software on the planet.

There are a plethora of problems particular to individule PCs that not even Adobe can be held responsible for. As a general rule, I've found Adobe products to be very stable I would think your problem might not be with Acrobat but Internet Explorer.
IE works (and always has) outside the standards all other Internet software developers find so useful. Acrobat has to be standards complient but IE (and Microsoft themselves) would rather be seen as inventing standards than adhearing to them. IF you have stability with Chrome, your problem is solved. IE is not the sort of browser I'd recommend for a business based PC that has passwords and the like stored on it.

  • Mind Boggling Problem: Inconsistent behaviour of a Simple Query

    Hi All,
I am faced with a with a mind boggling problem, i have designed a query in BEx Query designer, the query is a rather simple one taking date as input and returning two fields one in carton the other in litres (the conversion is a simple formula) on that date. The problem is when i run this query (using BEx Analyzer) on a date for instance 10th of October, the first time it is run it gives the correct result but when i run it again on the same date i.e. 10th of October it gives incorrect result. To fix this i close the Analyzer log off then log on again and then run the query to get correct data; sometimes this works sometimes doesnt.
I am puzzled pls pls help any one...
    Regards,
    FS

Check if the issue with query is also present when you run query in RSRT in SAPGUI. You can also review the cache settings in RSRT

  • Mind Boggler, Apple Support No Help, FCP 6 Disables iSight?

Here is my problem. I have narrowed it down to Final Cut Pro 6 being the application disabling my iSight on initial startup. I have a brand new 13.3 MBP. Fresh install OS Snow Leopard. I installed each program then tried iSight and it went out after I installed FCP 6. Say I start up my machine go to Photo Booth, Says there is no connected camera. Exit the app and then re-open Photo Booth. It works. I cant find any preferences or info relating the two, or even preferences in the system library for Photo Booth. Apple said they have never heard of this. I took my machine to the Apple Store they replaced the MBP isight worked came home installed all my software got the problem. They said if that were to happen it would be a software related problem so I fresh installed and did each program individually and narrowed it down to FCP. The only thing that was in the Startup folder was Apple QMaster preferences so I deleted those and still have the problem. I cant figure it out what so ever. Any ideas?

Before I retire for the rest of the night I should mention a few more things.
The entire computer was re-setup clean. Full erase and install of OS X 10.4.10 and clean install of FCS2.
I did use the Render Manager to erase all render files and tried again... multiple times.
I restarted the G5 each time and tried rendering with no other apps running.
    I've repaired permissions.
At least one time I came back to the computer and FCP was just closed with no crash or warning messages. Every other time I get a message allowing me to send a report to Apple. I've sent the report only once since the crash report is the same (I compared them).
I tried re-importing the project from the original project file.
Originally, before I was told by others to answer "no" to the field question on import, I answered "yes" to that question and was able to render every sequence in the project without any issues. After being told to answer "no" I deleted the project and render files, reimported the project, and am now trying to render again.
If you're wondering why I would want to work on the project some more I'm thinking of doing the color correction all over again using Color so I can see if I get better results than with Magic Bullet Editors Look Suit or Colorista. This required me to convert the 5.1.4 project to 6.0.1. I know it's not recommended, but I want to give it a shot anyways to see if I can improve the project.
That's all I have right now. If you need any other specific info let me know. I really appreciate the help anyone is able to provide. Thanks!

  • A mind boggleing monitor problem

i have a pavilion P7-1108P, with a Sansung SyncMaster B2230 monitor and am running windows 7 Home Premium.  my wife uses it mainly for e-maim and playing microsoft games.  it has developed a problem that has me stumped.  when she plays any of the games the monitor flickers and flashes and the icon on the task bar moves back and forth and eventually it will hide the program, but you can re-open it by clicking on the task bar icon.  i have run a full system scan with norton 360 premium with no indication of any virus.  i also ran the hp memory diagnostic tool and found no problem there either.  i could run the recovery program, but wouldn't be sure the problem might raise its head again.  any suggestions?

    Hello chuck_l,
I understand that you display is flickering.
    Do a hard reset.
    Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.
This should reset the hardware in the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Does the screen flicker when you are in BIOS?
    Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.
Go to device manager and uninstall the display adapter. Restart the computer.
This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the graphics.
Here is a link that will show you how to get to your device manager.
Let me know how everything goes.

  • A mind-boggling question

I have a Frame that runs when it is called from the "main" method and it displays a set of Components placed on different panels such as buttons and textfields. As the functionality of one of these buttons (I.e. when this button is pressed), I wanted a new frame to appear to the right of the existing frame. I have named this new frame as "MyFrame" and have created a sepaerate class for it.
When I defined the Listener method for the button that is supposed to open this new frame, I have simply included this statement:
MyFrame fr = new MyFrame();Yet, it appears that every time I press this button, nothing appears. Am I missing something?

You need to find the dimensions of the original JFrame and pass these the JFrame you are creating, so your code would look like:
    class frameA extends JFrame {
        public frameA() {
             setSize(200,200);
             frameB fB = new frameB(this.getX(), this.getY(), this.getWidth(), this.getHeight());
             fB.show();
    class frameB extends JFrame {
        public frameB(int posX, int posY, int width, int height) {
             setSize(200,200);
             setLocation(posX+width, posY);
}this shoudl place the JFrame's side by side ocuppting 400x and 200y pixels. The setLocation() in frameB may need adjusting depending on border sizes used.
    hope this helps.
    regards,
    seb.

  • They're so so sorry about all of those mistakes

I called on Sunday night because we couldn't get HBO channels on our bedroom box. In doing all of the things they suggested, the coxial plug fell apart and we were left with no tv at all upstairs. They said they would send somebody out Tuesday between 3 and 7, so I left work early, only to find out that their automated system had "fixed" our broken cable remotely. I called about this, and they were really, really sorry and told me they'd have somebody out the next day. Again I left work early, only to find out that "the next day" had changed into a week from today. Once again they were really sorry, but this time I started to lose my patience at the level of sheer ineptitude here. Now they will do us a special favor and have somebody out tomorrow. Can't wait to see how that goes. This is mind-bogglingly poor.

  • Hard Drives Bare After Forced Restart!!! HELP!!!

Running new Mac Pro w/ plenty of RAM, and the latest OS.
Was installing Xcode with a few programs running in the background.
Time Machine appeared to have kicked in during the install and Xcode just seemed to hang. Then, suddenly all text disappeared from all Firefox tabs, and all other programs stopped responding. I let it sit for over an hour with no response. I couldn't force quit things, though I was able to quit Mail and Calculator without issue. I could not, however, interact with their windows directly.
After another 30 minutes of total system lock-out (even the dock was stuck) I pressed and held the power button on the front of the unit to turn it off.
When I turned the machine back on it could not find the start-up disk. So, I started up with the Install DVD and ran Disk Utility...
The two internal drives on my machine both registered and were verified in good working order, but they were now BLANK DU registered them as having a tiny bit of information on them when only 2 hours before there was literally hundreds of gigs on board... years worth of valuable data.
I'm not looking for a scolding regarding my not regularly backing up, nor to be admonished for shutting the machine off the way I did.
Has anyone ever seen something like this?
I'll be calling Applecare first thing tomorrow, but am wondering if this might be something Disk Warrior can lend a hand with. Thoughts and recommendations welcome.
    Thanks all for your consideration.
    Best,
    Jason
ps > wary of recovering from Time Machine back-up due to the fact that I'm not sure one of the drives was backing up, and I dare not overwrite the drive while the chance to recover wholesale through the use of a tool like Disk Warrior exists.

    UPDATE
I spoke with Applecare this morning and they instructed me to restore from my TimeMachine back-up and that my secondary internal drive (ie. the MORE important drive) would have definitely been backed up as well.
I restored and... voila!... my basic desktop operating system is back.
That's the good news, however, the bad is that the secondary internal drive DID NOT restore.
As I mentioned before, the drive is being read as healthy and EMPTY, which is mind boggling. I assumed that this was a directory issue, but neither DiskWarrior nor Data Rescue can determine that there is anything wrong with the directory. Data Rescue's "Quick Search" revealed no additional files save for the basics you would find on a barren drive. I am currently running their "Deep Search" which should take several hours, but my question for you guys is this: should Data Rescue come up empty is there anything else I can do? Or is the drive well and truly borked... empty... caput?!? Do I let DiskWarrior attempt to rebuild the directory or am I just throwing fuel on the fire and potentially overwriting data that might be useful in recovery.
Do I then take it to a forensic pro to go over the drive with a fine tooth comb?
Recovering this data is approaching a "no price too high" situation.

  • PLEASE HELP -- iTunes Match - multiple problems, desktop and iOS

I've been going round and around with this issue for the past couple days (yes, I've been dedicating that much time to it) and finally went to the Genius Bar today to get help and even they were stumped.  Hoping someone here can shed some light on the situation. Next stop, express lane for support.
    Broad Problem:
I paid for iTunes Match around 6 months ago and activated it on my desktop.     Since then, I've had nothing but problems across my desktop and 4 seperate iOS devices (3 iPhone 4's, and an iPad 3).  The basic sympton on the desktop is that iTunes itself frequently freezes (Option-Command-Esc reveals "Application Not Responding") and requires a force quit.   As soon as I turn OFF iTunes Match, this symptom goes away. I can leave iTunes open for hours without any problems.  As soon as I turn it back ON, then the problem comes back -- sometimes iTunes won't launch at all (crashes before bringing the UI up), and other times it's the same freeze that requires a force-quite.  Quite frustrating.
On the iOS side of things, the situation isn't any better.   When I toggle on iTunes Match and then enable "Show All Music" in the Preferences of the iPhone, then I get any one of the two following scenarios:
    A) The Music App simply won't load.  It tries, goes to white, and crashes back to the home screen of my iPhone.
    B) If I'm lucky, the Music app will launch and I can see my entire library in the cloud as intended.  The problems start though when I go to actually download/play songs from the cloud.  Typically, the songs will start playing but I will eventually get an error message that alerts me that there was "Problem Downloading Track".  When I then go into the Download Que of the iTunes Store (again, still on the iPhone), it shows the entire list of songs that I had wanted to download and shows them at various stages of download completion -- even if they have actually completely played on the phone itself.   Sometimes they will time out and display the "problem downloading track/try again" status, and other times the progress bar sits at about 99% with a status of "Processing".
What's particularly strange about scenario B is that I've tried to download a variety of songs to different devices -- my wifes iPhone 4, my iPhone 4, an iPad, and a iPhone 4S that the person at the Genius Bar had me use as a tester.   When I tried the iPhone 4S at the genius bar, I was amazed at how fast it downloaded to the device.  This had the genius bar guy wondering if it was a problem with my phone itself or with the iPhone 4 in particular.   Unfortunately he didn't have a spare iPhone 4 to test with so I had to go home and test with my wife's iPhone 4.  Again, she had the same problem.   The status bar hangs at about 99% showing a status of "processing", even though I have completely listened to the track within the Music App.  The same scenario happens on the iPad as well.
Okay, if you're with me so far:  here's where things start to get REALLY strange....
On MY iPhone 4, when I run into problem A or B, the only fixable solution for me has been to go into Preferences and toggle OFF iTunes Match, completely shut down the phone, restart the phone, and then launch the Music App, at which point I can see the music that has loaded to my phone.    The kicker here is that even though I've turned iTunes Match OFF and completely powered down my phone, when I go into the Music app I can ALSO see my ENTIRE iTunes Match library, completely with cloud status icons.   It's as though I never turned off iTunes Match at all.  In fact, I had to triple check my own preferences to verify that it was turned OFF, which it sure enough is.   I can even go and attempt to download songs, with various levels of success based on the problems above.
Now, on my WIFE's iPhone 4, when I run into problem A or B, I tried the same process in tandem with the phones side by side as I did the test -- turn iTunes Match OFF in Preferences, power down the phone, power up the phone, and launch the Music app.    However, on her phone, when this happens the Music App shows what is to be expected -- only the music that is on the phone itself.
Okay, there's a lot to digest here, but here's the synopsis:  my phone and my wifes phones are behaving differently when displaying iTunes Match, with my phone appearing to completely disregard the status of the On/Off Toggle within Preferences-->Music, and my wifes phone behaving as it should, at least in terms of what it displays.   The download problems are present on each device and the iPad is also behaving like my wifes phone.
Given all of these inconsistencies and irregularities across devices and platforms -- MacBook Pro running Lion, separate iPhone 4's each running iOS 5.1.1, an iPad running iOS 5.1.1. and an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1.1 - my suspicion is that:
    A) I've got a corrupt iTunes library file residing in the cloud
    or
    B) iTunes Match is having a hard time reconciling my Apple ID across so many devices (possibly complicated by issue A)
The bottom line is that I have paid for iTunes Match and have never been able to use it successfully or with any predictability.
I'm wondering if anyone else has any symptoms that match any of this and/or have come across a corrupted file in the cloud and, if so, how to remedy the situation.  Since it's in the cloud, I can't do anything about.  I can't even see it.  Most troubling.
    Note:
When I went to the Genius Bar, they had me do a complete restore of the phone (not from backup) to elminate any corrupt files within the phone itself.  Even that didn't solve the problem.   That's when he brought out the 4S phone to test on and we were both so shocked at how blazingly fast the songs downloaded, error-free.  That phone was able to download 8 songs completely before one song downloaded to my phone sitting right next to it.  Both on the same Apple Store network and both downloading the exact same tracks using my Apple ID and login.   While it's tempting to say that the 4S is faster than the 4, I don't think it's 8 times faster with download speeds over WiFi.   However, even if the speed/completion discrepancy is because the 4S is superior, it doesn't explain the mind-boggling disparity between my wife's phone and my phone -- both iPhone 4's and both running the same iOS.   Throw in the oddity of iTunes on Lion crashing whenever iTunes Match is on and this all seems to point to some corruption in the cloud that perhaps the 4S device is able to bypass...for whatever reason.
    Please help.  This is nuts.

Exactly same problem - any ideas - I get error message 14

  • So I want to create my own IRC client...

I've wanted to make my own IRC client for a long time now. As soon as I switched from winfailure a few months ago (I think nearly a year now! ), actually.
As time went by I've slowly, begrudgingly gotten used to irssi, but with gritted teeth all the same. On winfailure, I used HydraIRC, and while this application was quite good, its supposedly open source license wasn't free as in free speech, only as in free beer. So while the code was open, it was only opened such that the code couldn't be used in other projects. Stab.
Anyway, I used this client for the better part of a year, and while it lacked quite a few things that would have probably turned others away like the complete lack of a scripting engine, it did what I wanted pretty well, and set an operational standard, if you will, that I got used to and have not found anywhere else. Yet.
So I want to recreate the standard I picked up on but for POSIX platforms (except for cygwin), and introduce some features of my own too. I simply don't know where to start, however.
Note that the subject says "create", not "write" - after asking around a bit in IRC ##linux recommended I try taking two IRC clients that have the features I want and merging their codebases. I've never done something like this before but I think it'd probably be fairly interesting, if not trying.
So, I'll list the features I'm looking for, and perhaps you can give me some suggestions on 1) how I'd either implement this myself or 2) a client with X feature already coded in. Thanks.
    The features I'm looking for:
    - Code Simplicity: This is the most important, to me, in the case of using others' code. Complex code (just look at rxvt if you want complex code) will just confuse and down-hearten me and make me run away.
    - A network-oriented model: I want a client with a daemon, or server, that connects to my networks and performs most "heavyweight" takes, and a client, which just handles display. Quassel does this to an extent but is horribly underdeveloped and I don't have a system powerful enough to handle running Qt on a long-term basis (since I already tend to use GTK apps). I also don't know C++.
    - Multiple clients: This is the second most important. I really need this one. I want to be able to have a "main" client that can connect to the server and manage general tasks, and a "light" text-based, console-driven client that connects and can be run over ssh, for example. Quassel completely falls apart here because it uses KDE's network-IPC libraries to transfer data from the server to the client, which a quick check with Wireshark showed to be binary. And I wouldn't want my "lite" client to require KDE, or at least KDE's libraries - that'd just be majorly weird.
    - Speed: I want the client to be fast and responsive at all times, even on slower systems, and even when I'm connected to a lot of channels.
    - Scriptability: It doesn't need to be complex, like Perl's library that applications can bind in. That's overmuch IMHO and, most importantly, slow.
I don't think one particular client meets those needs, but a few of you will probably shout "xchat!" Well, X-Chat is... not my thing. If irssi could be considered very far away from HydraIRC in terms of operation, X-Chat is the same distance away twice over. It doesn't operate the same way at all.
So, now that I've loosely explained the features I want, let me now explain another thing I want to be able to do.
Despite having hardware in dire need of upgrading right now (these systems aren't nearly that bad, but Firefox tends to eat my 512MB of RAM up pretty quickly, and I recently found all the PCs this house has in it 99% likely can't use DDR2 RAM, which isn't too good), I hope and believe that one day I'll upgrade to considerably better equipment with extensive graphics support. With this newer hardware I hope to create a new kind of UI model with animation integrated into the look-and-feel model of the UI the same way images are used for the same purpose today, GPLv3 license it so corporations can't steal it and use it in their products, and then bind it into my IRC client.
However, I want to start now, before I upgrade. With this in mind, I don't know whether I should make my own GUI toolkit, or use an existing toolkit now and rewrite half the codebase later to support my own graphics and animations. I'm not very good at making things that are programmatically extensible and flexible, so I don't really know what to do here. Simple hand-rolled toolkits such as dialogs with some text and a button can be managed in under ~250 lines of code, but anything bigger, and, well... you get stuff like GTK and KDE, whose toolkit libraries in total are both on the order of over a couple of MBs each, and have been in development for years, and continue to evolve rapidly today. If you're careful, you end up with FLTK, which I don't like the look of at all.
In addition to that, I want my client to be fast, even on slower computers. Right now, I have a 3-screen setup, with each screen being driven by a separate PC. The one on the right - the one I'd be putting my IRC client on - is a 450MHz P3 with 320MB of RAM. It runs X on a 4MB VGA card at 800x600. This is where I currently run an irssi session over ssh and screen. To give you an idea of the graphical power of this machine, antialiased Xft fonts with urxvt take 0.15 seconds to "scroll" when I say something in IRC. However, it's a capable PC if I harness its capability right, and is where I'd target my IRC client. And I dislike seeing my fonts redraw - I dislike seeing anything redraw, for that matter.
You might think I'm crazy, writing an IRC client for one of the slowest PCs in the house that works, that I in future want to extend to use a graphics layer that I hope to develop on a server-class Nehalem workstation with an insane amount of RAM and a pair of SLI'd GTX 280s in it.
I don't think I'm crazy. I'm using what I have to give back to the open source community, and using what I consider to be an cunning operational model to do it: back when the 450MHz P3 I spoke of was the only "main" working PC I had, I designed, in none other than Visual Basic 1.0, a media center UI. On Windows 98. In 2006. And, you know what, despite the fact that the animations it used were pretty basic, it actually looked really, really good. And why was this? Because I used software designed for 486DX2s running at 33MHz with 4 or 6MB of RAM, on a P3, with 128MB of RAM (yes, I've upgraded it since), clocked at 450MHz. The result? Blinding, optimized, speed. You really should try the older versions of VB sometime - I managed to score a copy of VB 2.0 which is legal to distribute because its "Make EXE" (ie compile) function is crippled. Email me and I'll mail you a copy - it's completely legal.
In the same manner, if I design this IRC client and carefully construct it so its client/server model works capably on my two PCs, my server (a machine not unlike the P3 I've been discussing - my server just has more hard disks in it, a 50MHz faster processor, runs my left-hand display and my IRC network) and my old desktop (the 450MHz box I've mentioned so much), when I finally bring it over to my new computer it'll be so fast that it'll be as if the computer is registering keypresses before I even type them. And that's the kind of performance I want to couple with shinyyy graphics.
Sorry this sounded halfway between a motivational speech, a request for help, and a coder's dilemma. lol

Bit of an update: Varreon emailed me regarding VB 2.0 and we had a bit of a discussion regarding the language I planned to use.
He said it would be fine to post our conversation, so here's how it panned out:
Varreon wrote:...What language were you planning on writing your client in? I've written an irc bot in c++, and I'll upload my source code if you're interested in looking through it.
    dav7 wrote:
Well, I'm not all that sure what language I want to use just yet.
I know I want it to be extensible, so I could either use a high-level, extensible but slow scripting language to power the client as a whole, or I could go down a path already travelled, proved extremely successful and in my opinion cleaner, and embed a scripting language, which would negate the requirement for a high-level language but still facilitate customization.
All the same, I'm not really all that sure what language to use.
C++ isn't really my thing - on my current computers, g++ takes maybe 3 seconds to compile the smallest of source files, and while that isn't *really * all that long, I'm not all that patient. As it stands I consider /gcc/ too slow for my preferences and use tcc instead - you might like to try it if you're on a 32-bit system.
I'll probably move to C++ when I get a new PC, but for now, all I really find fast enough for my liking is C, and I'm a little concerned that C might be a little too low-level for what I want to design here - beyond scriptability, I want the client itself to be easily extended in various directions. Of course the client will only appeal to a specific market (in an open source sense), but I do want it to feel organic and something that can be extended in as many directions as possible. So C probably won't be the language I use, and since C++ is slow to compile, it's probably going to be off the list as well.
All the same, I'm not concerned about speed in the irrational way I have been in the past, but at the same time I do need to be careful in my thinking regardless of the language I use since don't want a client that lags to death. A good example of a slow program is SciTE - the text editor I'm typing this in, Geany, uses the same edit control it uses (Scintilla, which is written in C++, AFAIK), and while this component has a good degree of editorial control, scrolling with the scroll wheel can be slow. Also, when I recently tried to run SciTE on an old laptop I found on the side of the road (AMD K-6, 350MHz, 32MB RAM), I discovered that just *typing* would lag the system horribly - typing about 15 keystrokes quickly resulted in a lag of about 6 seconds after which what I typed would appear all at once. Typing single keys - slowly - resulted in a delay of around 0.20-0.39ms (guessed).
Regarding scripting, I had my eyes on one embeddable language in particular but I forgot what it was called, so I headed to Wikipedia for a quick hunt-down session for it and managed to discover Falcon, which appears to use a VM but is at the same time the same insanely fast because it uses a C/C++-only policy for its modules. It also advertises itself as a scripting engine "ready to empower mission-critical multithreaded applications" so I'm considering Falcon to be a possible engine to integrate, and on a slightly long shot, even the language I might end up using. I also think hunting the first language I considered down and embedding that might be a nice idea, and I also might embed Perl. I'd love to be able to embed Ruby.
Overall however, I do need to contain my enthusiasm - the desire to throw in multiple scripting engines, awe-inspiring compositing graphics layers, and support for multiple protocols isn't such a bad idea, but if not controlled will result in serious featuritis, which when combined with a verbose, low-level language will only result in me throwing myself at the project too hard "to get it done", with proven disastrous results.

[ Note, there's an update in a follow-up post below this one that affects the information you see here - just so you know ]
I've done some consideration since that email and it's possible that C++ might be able to be brought onto the table. This was mostly inspired by the good outcome I had with writing a couple of modules for InspIRCd, which uses C++, compared to my previous attempt when I knew no C.
The main thing I'm a little indecisive about at the moment is the toolkit; I want something that's fast but doesn't look all that bad; FLTK is, as I've said previously, not something I like the look of - it does appear to be somewhat themable but it's impossible to escape the fact that it values speed over shininess, and while this is excellent for my current target, I don't want to develop something that relies on it so heavily that it's next to impossible to port to whatever I end up using when it's time to get the graphics in, such as a UI model on top of an OpenGL canvas.
The second thing I'm unsure of is what scripting language I should use. I've done quite a bit of looking around - mostly to try and find that language I mentioned that I lost - and found quite a lot of possibilities, and even discovered that with some work (well, a lot of work, admittedly) it's even possible to embed Ruby into C++, and have Ruby call user-defined C++ functions and so on. It's not an official part of the project, but someone managed it nonetheless.
It seems to be possible to embed popular languages such as Perl, Python, Tcl, Lua, etc, but then there are lesser-known languages designed for embedding, such as Nesla, AngelScript and the like (such as that language I can't find, heh). And of course I could also embed a JavaScript engine, which would probably be very odd but all the same quite an experience.
Then there's Falcon, which appears to be a pretty good language in general but doesn't appear to have all that many modules available for it just yet, so doesn't seem to suit my purposes.
    So, summing up:
    - I don't know how I should develop this in terms of graphics - should I wait for a new PC and just use SDL or whatever I'm going to use, use a toolkit and either rewrite half of everything at some other point or juggle two display methods, or what?
    - The number of scripting languages out there is mind-boggling. To me, it's not what syntax the language uses, or whether it's statically or dynamically typed, or how readable it is, it's #1 how fast it is, and #2 how suitable it would be in the context of an IRC client - string manipulation (even on every incoming and/or outgoing message), user interface control, and so on.

  • How come full screen exclusive mode is so slow?

Hi. I am currently working on customer facing point-of-sale application. This application has a lot of animation going on and so needs quite speedy graphics performance. When I first investigated this it looked like I could do it in pure Java 2D which would be a lot easier than resorting to DirectX or OpenGL and mixing languages.
Unfortunately as the app has moved closer to functional complete the graphics performance appears to have deteriorated to the point where it is unusable. So I have gone back to the beginning and written a test program to identify the problem .
The tests I have done indicate that full screen exclusive mode runs about ten times slower than windowed mode. Which is mind boggling. Normally - say in DirectX - you would expect a full screen exclusive version of a games/graphics app to run a little bit quicker than a windowed version since it doesn't have to mess around with clip regions and moving vram pointers.
My test program creates a 32 bit image and blits it to the screen a variable number of times in both windowed and full screen mode. Edited results look like this:
    iter wndw fscrn performance
         10 16.0 298.0 1862% slower
         20 47.0 610.0 1297% slower
         30 94.0 923.0 981% slower
         40 141.0 1205.0 854% slower
         50 157.0 1486.0 946% slower
         60 204.0 1877.0 920% slower
         70 234.0 2127.0 908% slower
         80 266.0 2425.0 911% slower
         90 297.0 2722.0 916% slower
         100 344.0 3253.0 945% slower
The results are substantially the same with the openGL hint turned on (although I don't have that option on the release hardware). I am assuming that the images end up as managed since they are created through BufferedImage and the system is running under 1.5.
Is there a way to get the full screen version running as fast as the windowed version?
    Here's the test prog:

                             "\t" + (int) ( (fullscreenTest[f]/windowedTest[f])*100.0) + "% slower");
    }

    Well I could do...
The problem is that I am compositing multiple layers of alpha transparent images. If I just render straight to the screen I get nasty flicker where I see glimpses of the background before the top layer(s) get rendered. So I would have to render to an offscreen buffer and then blit the assembled image into the screen. Even then there will be some tearing as you can never sync to the screen refresh in windowed mode.
And the thing is - there ought to be a 'proper' solution, g*dd*mm*t. Surely the core team didn't put together a solution that is ten times slower than it should be and then say 'What the heck, we'll release it anyway'.
I mean, if you can't believe in Sun engineering what can you believe in?

  • Frequent and chronic Slowness on Late 2009 21.5" iMac, Issues with Display, Fan, and Booting

    Hello,
Sorry for the repost, but I realized after the edit period had passed that I left out a lot of information from my original post, and that I misrepresented my problem in the question heading. Because of this, I am posting again with the updated information.
I  am using a 21.5" iMac from Late 2009 with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2.  Recently, I have been experiencing several signs of failure/aging during  use:
    Frequent:
Mail.app slow opening, closing; messages opened in large batches do not get marked as read
Terminal.app experiences noticeable lag when opening (it sometimes takes between 5 and 20 seconds between launching the application and getting an active prompt)
Processes lag or become unresponsive, even when not many applications are running
Browswers frequently become unresponsive, pinwheel, or lag considerably, frequently requiring a force-quit.
    Mouse Pinwheels Frequently
    Intermittent
Computer  generates loudly audible fan noises, persists even when computer is  briefly powered off during a reboot; does not always stop after  rebooting
    Finder often becomes unresponsive
    Rare (one time only)
Machine  powered on in "Safe Boot" mode for no apparant reason; red text reading  "Safe Boot" in menu bar of login screen; background picture slideshow  mode became very glitchy, phased and flashed in horizontal grey bars  before loading next background image
    Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine  will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged  from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power  outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again,  moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has  never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.
I followed some instructions from a similar thread,  but I felt that my experiences were sufficiently different that I  couldn't troubleshoot from someone else's solution. I would greatly  appreciate any technical advice and help that the community can offer.

This indicates that your Bootcamp partition is still FAT, which also indicates that the Windows Installer has not been used to reformat it to NTFS yet, as required by Windows Installer. No Windows installation exists yet.
2: If I don't hold down option key with my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "Non-system disk, press any key to reboot". My keyboard is unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
The NVRAM in the Mac (as set by Bootcamp Assistant) is telling it to boot from the built-in Optical drive. Is it fully functional and has Windows Installer media in it or broken? Since no drivers have been loaded, the Keyboard/Mouse which are BT/USB, will not function.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications, it has a built-in Optical drive...
    Optical drive
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
3: If I don't hold down option key and it is without my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". My keyboard is, again, unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
No bootable media in Optical drive, hence this error.

  • Late 2009 21.5" iMac has a chronically noisy fan.

After experiencing slowness on my iMac when browsing the web, checking email, and opening terminal prompts, I decided to upgrade from 4gb of RAM to 8gb. This has made the slowness less of a problem, but I am still experiencing other erratic behaviors. For no apparant reason, the fan sometimes starts running very noisily, even during computer sleep and sometimes even during the entire duration of the reboot process. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.
    P.S.
Prior to the RAM upgrade, I was experiencing several other issues, which I have not reproduced but cannot verify that they are fixed.

Could be a bad memory problem or an issue with Parallels. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if the panics cease.

  • Data Issues with New Curve 8900 on ATT

Hi, I just got this Blackberry Curve 8900 yesterday for ATT, and it's my first Blackberry. Everything was working fine up until earlier today when I realized that my data wasn't working properly. The data will work with certain apps, but certain apps with also not connect. My e-mail and BB Messenger also will not connect. The only way for me to get them to work is if I connect to wifi, but other than that on my EDGE the majority won't connect.
Here is a list of apps i've compiled that shows what works with what:
    -Works with Data & WiFi-
    BB Browser
    iheartradio
    FML
    poynt
-Won't Work with Data but will work with WiFi-
    BB E-Mail
    BB Messenger
    BB App World
    Facebook
    Twitterberry
    Myspace
    Google Maps
I went to Manage Connections, and Mobile Network Options and my data is set to on, and i've done muliple battery pulls to no avail. When I turn on my WiFi all my emails and alerts that I missed come rushing in. For example I resent a Service Book to my device and I did not receive that until my WiFi was turned on. My "EDGE" is in capital letters so i'm receiving data.
Can someone please help me solve this frustrating topic? It really is mind boggling.
    Thanks!
    Stephen B.

You have a BlackBerry Data plan right? I'm assuming so since it works sometimes
Also if you notice when the Wi-Fi is off, if you go into Manage Connections | Service Status does the BlackBerry Internet Service say it's connected to the Mobile Network? Or if you go into Mobile Network Options can you run a Diagnostics Test and see if it sees that your data is connected?
If someone has been helpful please consider giving them kudos by clicking the star to the left of their post.

  • E51 latest firmware update broke any WIFI attempt ...

I'm really pi__ed off now, after the latest firmwareupdate i get: "Web: No Gateway Reply" whenever I try to connect to ANY wifi connection, regardless off wep/public etc. What is really annoying is that this is NOT a new issue...it has been reported in earlier firmwares in all kinds of forums... and the lack of support from Nokia in this matter is mind boggling.
I want my phone fixed! and dont give any **bleep** like: "did you try to connect to another wlan etc." off course I have. There is no reason why my wlan spots wouldnt work after the update.
Does anyone have a solution to this annoying problem?

What you said made no sense, please explain what you meant if you even can. To be honest you sound like you have no idea what you are talking about. "But those are type of private WLANs and you can not browse them." Please define a private Wlan and why I should not be able to "browse" it.
There seems to be a bug within the DHCP client. Maybe it's not holding the RFC standards for DHCP because when I configure static IP on the phone, everything works properly. Please fix DHCP!
Funny enough I can access my router's configuration page from the phone but it just wont go through the internet.

  • Hijacked mac-unix gurus, help me please!

This is a very weird situation, please bear with me:
My ibook and desktop g4 were running 1.3.9, the plain consumer version. Or so I thought.
But here is the weird part: after splitting with my ex, I found i had no root access on either of my macs - and no way to regain it.
1.there is a Security Agent installed
2.a Thawte security cerificate/ w key is in the ibook's keychain, the password encrypted and obviously news to me.
    3.the ibook HD is locked.
3.Remote desktop agent, apparently running from ibook, controlling every aspect of the desktop.
    4. crucial logs are either missing or encrypted.
To clarify, both machines are mine, but the ibook was used primarely by my ex, who claims to be computer illiterate.
Who also denies any knowledge of anything.
And now for the most bizarre part: the ARD, and network manager parts are hidden - the machines "look" ordinary.
The whole operation is camouflaged in the most mind boggling way. By sheer luck, I stumbled on the ibook's "other" interface - just enough to note that the menu is different, and there are weird java scripts all over the place that trigger actions in ways I never saw in Kansas:
example a: itunes extra library stashed in documents folder, which, when imported, added one mp3 file to itunes, but it was no tune - it's name: "connect to server".
example b: expander alias on the desktop - if clicked launches the classic- which runs without showing in the dock, and launches something else...
There are modifier keys involved, but i have no idea what they are - pressing the right ones gets you "in" (to OZ?), otherwise a bogus system preference is launched - I found the script that spells this out, AFTER I have seen it happen
So, there is a very sneaky system within the system, but also very protected:
Every time I wipe, zero all data etc, on a drive, after installing a brand new system....it then "rebuilds" itself to whatever it was before. Yup, complete with email addresses.
So there is apparently an invisible volume on all my drives, where there are munchkins that track and rebuild whatever I
"screw up" - most of all, tell the installer/disk util. how to "wipe".
After 3 weeks of no sleep and sifting through hundreds of pages of logs and scrambled files...I realized whatever is on these two machines is certainly not a case of someone trying to hide the **** surfing; furthermore, I took the plunge and installed a new HD on the ibook, in hope to get rid of it all. At first, the Panther would not install on the new drive - but after I removed the airport card and the extra memory - the installation was fine.
So, what in the world am I dealing with? Everyone I talk to says you can't hardwire any data into macs, but everything points to some doctored part.
True, the new drive does not have the secret volume with X-serve on it, but SOMETHING is still there -sorry, I sound like Aliens script, but i have been reading logs on the ibook and there are a lot of weird apps, jobs and actions trying to launch, then quitting when they don't find the mother ship, that is the server, ftp or whatever.
Please help me out.Until this, I knew nothing about java, and now i am in java ****.
I basically lost both my macs, and what's worse, my IP and my personal name have been whoring on the web, and I have no way of tracking the ftp sites, it's all encrypted.
The cops tell me no laws were broken because I lived with that person - who denies doing it, anyway.
I am supposed to believe there is a Trojan, or a hacker who made it through the password protected network, reformatted my drives, installed the server software, ARD manager, iChat
Agent, Security Agent, deleted all important installation logs, oh, and "upgraded" my ipod as well.
I have text files and many screen shots, if anyone is interested.
Thank you for having the patience to read through this rant.
ps: just to save some time: open firmware, single user, sudo, password reset - nothing works in that sneaky ****.
    Thank you.

"But here is the weird part: after splitting with my ex, I found i had no root access on either of my macs - and no way to regain it."
Here's a question: have you gone in to NetInfo Utility confirmed that root is enabled under the Security menu?
"there is a Security Agent installed"
There is always a security agent installed. How do you think this security agent is messing with your system?
".a Thawte security cerificate/ w key is in the ibook's keychain, the password encrypted and obviously news to me."
That just means your ex surfed the web and bought something from a merchant who issued her a Thawte certificate. When that happens, OS X will offer (or perhaps automatically) store it in the user's keychain.
    "The ibook HD is locked."
What do you mean by that? you should not be able to copy files to system directories or other user's directories. without first gaining administrative access. Do you have an admin level user account? Did your ex? I suppose it's possible she disabled your account's admin privileges. You can check under Accounts in System Preferences (you may have to boot from your Panther install disc and use it to reset your ex's password
"Remote desktop agent, apparently running from ibook, controlling every aspect of the desktop."
What do you mean by every aspect of the system? Is it controlling the mouse? Is it controlling behaviors or configurations? Does it show up in Activity Viewer?

"The whole operation is camouflaged in the most mind boggling way. By sheer luck, I stumbled on the ibook's "other" interface - just enough to note that the menu is different, and there are weird java scripts all over the place that trigger actions in ways I never saw in Kansas:"
Please tell us how you stumbled on the other interface and what sorts of actions these javascripts trigger.
"There are modifier keys involved, but i have no idea what they are - pressing the right ones gets you "in" (to OZ?),"
