Mini 1.66 GHZ

Hi all. I just wanted to give a shout out -- I just upgraded my mac mini memory last night. went from 512 to 2 gig. Anyone out there thinking of doing it?? - go for it! It's $101.99 from Crucial.com. It's well worth it and very easy to do. Spinning beach balls / color pinwheels -- is a thing of the past :-)What a wake up call for the MINI !
here is the link for the ram. I paid more to have it 2 day shipped ( I did not want to wait )

TM, welcome to the Mac Mini Forum!
IMHO you will enjoy the benefits of extra RAM more
than you will enjoy the extra CPU speed.
The 1.83 CPU does get you the Superdrive, but
frankly, you'd be better off buying an external,
tray-loading DVD burner -- preferably with a firewire
interface. The Superdrive has a reputation for being
fussy about media and is not particular fast as a
burner, again IMHO.
So I'd recommend maxing the RAM to 2 Gig on the 1.66
CPU, and buying an external dvd burner.
If you only get 512 Meg of RAM your mini won't really
be showing you what it is capable of. Coming from a
nine-year old PC, 512 Meg may sound like a lot. But
on current Macs, it's barely enough.
Boece,
Thanks for the info, however, I forgot about the superdrive. Your idea of a DVD burner is good, but I am trying to keep costs down and I am running out of space on my desk. Would it be a good idea then to buy the faster processor with just 512 of ram and purchase the 2 Gig from Crucial and either install it my self of have an Apple store do it as Crucial is selling the 2 Gig upgrade for $87 right now. I know that I want to add an external HD for backups soon and I just am not sure I have the space for more items on my desk.

    On Second thoughts...
I don't really know how well Logic Express 7 performs on the Mac Mini because I have not yet had the chance to experience the two together. Don't let that put you off the idea though! From my understanding of the system requirements printed on the Logic Express homepage, it states that a G4 or faster system is required, however Apple personally recommend a Dual G4 or G5 is recommended alongside a minimum of 512MB of Ram. This Does mean that Logic Express will run on the Mac Mini but you will most probably find it lags when moving samples in real time and rendering them onto your hard drive. If you really want to enjoy making "serious" music on the Mac then you really need to be looking at the iMac G5 or the iMac Core Duo (Intel) purely for your tempers sake. As for an Intel Mac Mini, there is no indication as to when we will be seeing one on the market and therefore you may find yourself on the fence between keeping your fixed budget and holding on a little or jumping in and getting on the right road to a digital musical life - mac style.
Maybe this will inspire your decision:

  • How to transfer Apps from PB G4 OS 10.4.11 to New Mac mini 1.83 Ghz Leopard

    Hi all,
I'm sorry if this question has previously been posted. I tried searching the forums but was unsuccessful. I just purchased a new Mac mini 1.83 Ghz with Leopard.
*How can I transfer my files and applications from my powerbook G4 to the new mac mini.*
I'd like to transfer all my files and folders except for Tiger OS, and then reformat my PB G4 and sell it.
In the past I used CCC Carbon Copy Cloner, however I'm assuming that won't work in this situation.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

If your new mini is an Intel based system, then for the most part you really don't want to transfer your applications from the G4 PB to it, because at least some of your applications are going to be PPC software which is not native on the Intel system and therefore will run very slowly. Ideally, you would reinstall your software from disk or download, ensuring that were possible you replace non-native versions with fully Intel native (often described as 'Universal').
However, to answer your question, put the G4 PB into firewire target disk mode if it is capable of it (hold the T key down while booting it - a firewire symbol will appear on-screen if it can do this). Then connect it to the mini with a standard 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. Then on the mini, run the Migration Assistant (in Applications>Utilities) and follow the prompts. The system will then be able to see the PB as an external drive and allow you to migrate files, applications and settings.
Beware though that there can be issues because not only are you migrating from a G4 system to an Intel one, but also from Tiger to Leopard, meaning that you might find some software doesn't run correctly, or settings may cause instabilities.
Typically the best bet is to migrate your files using the migration assistant, but manually install software and set all the various configurations.
You're certainly right that you can't use CCC in this situation!!

  • Problems Syncing 4th Gen. iPod Touch + Mac Mini 1.5 Ghz G4

Can the iPod Touch sync with this old of a Mac Mini. I'm having problems syncing my daughters new iPod Touch with her Mac Mini 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4. The message "iPod Touch requires Mac OS X 10.5.8" appears. I can't get the OS to update past 10.4 Is there a work around???

No, there is no way around this. Sorry.
From the box the ipod came in and Apples website:

  • HT2129 install 10.5 on mac mini 1.42 Ghz, nothing works!

    Hi,
I want to install leopard 10.5.x on my Mac Mini 1.42 Ghz, on which I have Tiger 10.4.11, but nothing will work. My problem is that mij superdrive is defect and under Disk Utilities it issn't possible to resize my harddisk. I do have a bootable version of Leopard 10.5 but I can't get it installed on my Mac Mini.
    I have tried:
    1) Resizing my hard disk but somehow I cannot resize it, because it contains the startvolume. I wanted to make an extra partition on which I could write Leopard, but this doesn't work. I also tried to rezise it with iPartition but it gave the same message.
    2) Using my Mac Book Pro in Target Disc mode and play the DVD in it's superdrive. I can start the DVD on my Mac Mini but when it restarts it doesn't start installing and returns in its normal mode.
    3) Using my FireWire Disc on which I have installed Leopard 10.5 (with SuperDuper). Starting up my Mac Mini I held down the Alt-key but my FireWire disc doesn't appear in the list of possible bootable harddrives.
    4) I have used an usb disk drive, but it doesn't continue after restarting my Mac Mini during istallation.
    5) we want to remove the harddrive and connect it directly to my MB Pro. Maybe this way we can rezise the partition? Does anybody know?
    I am out of ideas.
What is the sollution to this problem??? Who has any other ideas?
I hope to hear from you
    Kind Regards
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
    1. I wouldn't recommend resizing it.
    2. With the Install Disc in the MBP, MBP in Target Mode, boot the Mini holding alt key to choose the Install Disc in the MBP to boot from.
(Oh, is this a gray machine specific & Intel only 10.5 Install Disc?)
    3. Is that a clone of an IntelMac install, if so, it won't ever work.
    4. Again, thinking this isn't a Retail Install Disc, but PPC Macs mostly do not boot from USB.
    5. Bad idea, the MBP would wany to make it GUID partition scheme, which is unbootable on PPC Macs.

  • Limit Mac Mini to 5 Ghz Wireless

I have an Airport Extreme Dual Band with the Access Point set to one name on both bands.
There are a number of 802.11n devices connected happily and a 2008 spec mac mini which has an a/b/g card and iphones which have to connect to the b/g network.
I'd like to limit the mac mini to the 5 Ghz 'a' network but I cannot work out how to stop the mac mini from connecting to the g network instead.
Does anyone know how to switch limit the bands of the mac mini?
    Thanks

I did consider that but I am wary of going down that route as there are enough "users" on the network for that to start becoming a real pain.
I was really hopeful that someone knew of a hidden setting that could force the mini only to connect to an 'a' network instead of defaulting to the 'g'.
I think the alternative might be to utilise the SSID (5Ghz) naming option under the airport extreme (as I am unlikely to be allowed to buy a new mini at this point in time)...

  • A new mini: 1.83 GHz vs. 2.0 GHz.

I'm considering getting a mini to use as a media center.
I need to know if the 1.83 processor with either *1 or 2 GB* of ram, will play HD-encoded material sufficiently, such as the popular codec, Matroska (.mkv) mostly 720p but also 1080p, and also WMV HD 9 (also 720p/1080p).
Or would I have to get 2.0 GHz, and if so 1 or 2 GB ram?
Anyone who has one of these minis that can comment?
I have a Macbook 2.2GHz, 2 GB ram that plays all of the above sufficiently. The reason I'm not taking graphics card into account, is because the Mac mini shares graphics card with my Macbook ..... the GMA 950.

As I said, Apple may be pressed into updating due to the change in processor line, though based on MacBook reports, such a change won't likely render much in the way of performance gains, if any at all, but as a whole Apple have little apparent need to update the mini on an increased cycle. It's the entry-level system intended for users who need a product at this price point rather than one for performance or technology. As such they will update when they feel is appropriate to the product and it's market, rather than for any other reason, and that has not historically been as regularly as with other products in the range.
It really boils down to one's perception of what being 'due' for an update means. To us, as users, it means something different than it does to Apple!
In terms of buying, I think there are two distinct market segments - those who buy because they can, and those who buy because they need to. The former tend to be interested in the latest/greatest/fastest/newest, and perhaps look to product updates as trigger points for purchases. The latter buy what they need when they need it, so the fact a new product might emerge a month later is of far less importance, since the criteria for happiness is based much more on whether the system purchased satisfies their need or not.
For anyone interested in the latest/greatest/fastest/newest and who don't have an immediate need, it's almost always better to wait and see what happens before buying.

  • Mini 1.4 GHz - run Tiger?

    Hi all,
A client had her son wreck her Panther mini's internet connectivity by 'upgrading' to Safari 3.1 for Tiger.
It is a 1.4 GHz with 256 MB RAM.
She is going to get more RAM, will this unit run Tiger? I have never been a big fan of newer software on older hardware, but in my experience, Tiger is pretty harmless?
If anyone could direct me to hardware / OS compatibility charts, I would be grateful, or for any words of wisdom as well.
    mr spock

Yes that system will run Tiger just fine - in fact based on performance reports (and my own experience at the time Tiger was released) Tiger may actually seem to run a little faster due to some user interface tweaks, and should be entirely stable.
More RAM is certainly a good idea, and Tiger is a little more demanding than Panther, so at 256Mb, it would be a bit sluggish, but 512Mb or the max of 1Gb it'll be fine. Even so, limiting the number of open applications will give a perfectly functional system with Tiger and the current memory.
I should add that I have run both my PPC minis (1.25 and 1.5 models) with Panther, Tiger and now Leopard. I've not found any problems with any!

  • Can I connect a 2006 Mac Mini 1.8 Ghz Intel to a Sony KDL40V5100 TV?  How?

I have searched through endless discussions here with posts complaining about problems getting a Mac Mini to properly display on Sony and other brands of flat screen LCD and Plasma HDTVs in full 1080p resolution by hooking it up to the TV using a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter cord hooked from the Mac Mini into an HDMI input on the TV. I want to buy a Sony KDL40V5100 40 inch LCD HDTV and get this connector to hook it into one of the TV's HDMI inputs, but have read so many posts here saying it won't work right. And in responses to these posts, I have read all the suggestions to fix these problems, ranging from using a third-party program to set the Mac to a specific resolution lower than the 1920 x 1080 (1080p) resolution to using both a mini-DVI to DVI connector and a DVI to HDMI to hook it into, which then could then be input into the TV, to changing display preferences on the Mac to dual or mirrored display status to setting the TV to a different input. I am very worried that if I buy this expensive TV, it will not display my Mac Mini properly on the Sony LCD TV. Is it GUARANTEED to work or not, and if yes, what settings need to be configured on which device(s)? I have also read posts here with complaints that the latest OS X "Leopard" update ruined the display's proper functioning status on the flat screen for many users. Can someone please help me get to the bottom of all this before I purchase the TV?

A 2006 mini doesn't use the mini-DVI port, so any issues with the mini-DVI adapter should be ignored. A DVI to HDMI cable will provide the correct signal just fine.
I see that your signature says you are running 10.4.11 (Tiger), so unless you've upgraded or plan to upgrade to 10.5 (Leopard) you need not consider the potential issue of resolutions not offered correctly in Leopard.
If you are concerned about the possible problems of the desktop displaying correctly, you should take your mini and the DVI to HDMI cable (which you will need to have in any case) to a store where the TV is being sold and ask to plug it in and test it. Any store worth shopping in will agree for a purchase that substantial. You can then see if overscan is handled correctly so the desktop will fit properly on the screen.

  • Upgrading video card Mac Mini 1.42 GHz Power PC G4????

    Hi there......
I was just wondering could anyone give me a hand with upgrading a video card on my Mac MIni......
Would there be chance to replace my existing video card:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RV280
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    VRAM (Total): 32 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x5962
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-120
    Displays:
    DELL E173FP:
    Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Not Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
Rotation: Supported.................,,,,,,,,, with a newer one.....
If that is possible, which video card should I get........
Also is VRAM (Total): 32 MB same as DDR memory 32 MB , because I checked some stuff on E-bay and they got:
ATI 100436011 Radeon 9200 MAC Edition PCI
(mfr. number: 100-436011) DDR 128 MB.....,,, but I'm not sure what to use........
    Ant help would be appreciated......
    Thanks in advance.....

And the reason for this is because the graphics chipset is integrated into the mainboard and cannot be separated from it. The same applies with video memory. If you're looking for a heavy-duty gaming machine, head on up to the iMac or the new Mac Pro, because even the new Intel Mini has integrated graphics.

  • I am proposing to upgrade the 4GB RAM in my Mac Mini 2.5 GHz core i5, by replacing it with 2 x 8GB Crucial 'slots'. Will the performance be significantly better than if I upgrade with 2 x 4GB slots? Is it cost effective, is the question.

My Mac Mini (2.5GHz Core i5) came with 4GB RAM, and I now wish to upgrade the RAM to either 8GB or 16GB in total (Crucial). Clearly, there is a price difference separating the two, but would this be justified by the extent of the improvement in performance, if I went for the more expensive option of 16GB RAM?
Secondly, if I am allowed to pose two questions: what seems to be the most compliant, reliable and cost effective external hard drive for this or Mac Mini's more generally? I was thinking of purchasing a 3TB HD for storing my rather large collection of photographs and Logic Pro 9 musical endeavours.
Your experience and advice would be appreciated, my having only recently made the switch from a Windows system to Mac.

I 150% agree with dwb and woodmeister50 about WD hard drives. They are NOWHERE near the quality they should be. When you can get a Seagate for just a few dollars more, and they last years longer, NO ONE should buy a WD. I lost $25,000 worth of music and audiobooks on a six-week-old WD in 2007 and that was the last I'd ever buy from them. They REFUSED to warranty it with the ORIGINAL sales receipt from Bestbuy.
I have 16Gb of Crucial RAM in my Mini and here's what I've discovered.
You WON'T see "lightning fast" performance increases, becasue the Mini is pretty darned fast to begin with. What you WILL see is that when you're running RAM intensive apps like Photoshop or Parallels, other apps won't "bog down".
Quite frequently I find myself with less than half a gig of free RAM out of that 16. When it was only 8 I was at 100% nearly ALL THE TIME. When I only had the 4 it came with, it was always maxed out.

  • Mac Mini Intel 166 GHz Nov 2006 OS X 10.5.7 won't boot

I upgraded my mac mini from tiger to leopard and started having boot up and shut down problems. I did the mac hardware test and received the following error:
    4sns/1/40000000:"TAOP"
Does anyone know what that means and is it easy to fix or has my mini played it's last itune?

Out of curiosity and especially since I have no idea what that error means culd you please share what worked?

  • Is Lion recommended for mini 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo 2GB?

    pros and cons, please.

You're at pretty much the minimum for Lion.  It should work, but that model didn't have a dedicated graphics chip, so some of the Lion eye candy may run slower for you.  (i.e.: Launchpad, Mission Control.)
If you did want to run Lion, I'd recommend more RAM.  That model is limited to 3GB of RAM max, but if you plan to have more than just Mail and Safari open, you'll need more than 2GB of RAM.
I'm running Lion on a 2009 Mini C2D 2.0GHz, but I upgraded to 8GB of RAM.  My model also has a dedicated graphics chip, and even with that, HD video podcast playback in iTunes has a slight stutter.
So I think that Lion on your model is possible, just barely.  I'd stick with Leopard or Snow Leopard (which ever you had) and upgrade to Lion only if I really needed iCloud.

  • Mini (2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo) partially ejects CD

I have a Mac Mini that has worked fine for a little less than a year but in late November started having a problem with the integrated optical drive.  It consistently will accept new CDs/DVDs but has a hard time ejecting them.  When I right click on the CD on the destop and select "Eject [disc name]" it begins to push the CD out, gets about 1/4" out, pauses, and then reinjects the disc and reads it normally.  If I'm quick, I can grab the CD as it starts to poke out and manually pull it out of the drive, but if I'm not quiclk, it just reinserts into the drive.  No problems reading discs, I just can't easily get them out.  It seems more like a mechanical problem.  Anyone else run into this?

Contact your Apple service provider or Apple store, there is either something wrong with the drive or it is out of line with the case.
Also note, your Mac's hardware is covered for one year or for three if you have AppleCare.

  • My mac mini 1.83 Ghz wont turn on

I took my mac mini 1.83Ghz intel core duo to tekserve and they toll me i have to replaced the logic board,is there a way that i can connect the internal hard drive to another computer using a adapter?
    Thanks Mr sax

I have had a similar problem to this - my Mini powered down whilst in use and will not power up at all. We have tried replacement power bricks and the apple store said it is probably the Logic board, but will charge £80 to diagnose the problem and they were quite vague regarding the price of full repair. How much would a new logic board cost for a early 2006 1.6 dual core intel mini including fitting? And is it right that they only guarantee their work for 90 days?
If it is uneconomic to repair I would be interested in using an external case like the one mentioned to extract my old data - I am ok with photos / music but presumably you can still get to old e-mails that are in your inbox of Mail? Where are they located on the harddisk?
If you had a new machine can you migrate address books / e-mail settings from an old drive?
The Apple store said for £35 extra they will extract the old data from the dead machine - presumably this is on the basis you have a new machine to import it on to?
any advice would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
