Mini 210 fan constantly surging, weird clicking sound

Just got a new Mini 210 and am wondering if it is normal for the exhaust fan to be surging constantly. I've tweaked a little in the BIOS with the "Fan always on" setting, but no matter what I choose it's constantly on and surging. It would be one thing if it was simply humming away quietly, then winding up more aggressively when playing videos, or doing other CPU-intensive (ie hot) tasks like a normal laptop, but this is ridiculous. It kind of sounds like it's out of control. Is this normal for a Mini with the Broadcom accelerator?
The second odd bit of noisemaking this device is doing is a loud "click-squeak-beep" every so often. It is irregular and hard to pinpoint, but kind of reminds me of how a failing hard drive starts grinding its platters. Anyone else hearing this? It may be a no-brainer to just ask for a replacement but thought I'd ask here first.

Many times a laptop overheating is directly related to the cooling of the processor. The main culprit is the fan. The fan sucks in air from the bottom and blows it out the side. It will also suck in hair, dust, and other debris. That stuff often gets trapped by the heat sink and over time builds up in a layer which chokes off the cool air going to the processor making the fan work harder.
What I recommend is getting some canned air and blowing out the vents in the side and bottom of the laptop. If after doing this you still have problems with over-heating, and your laptop is in warranty, you can take your laptop to a HP Authorized Service Center and ask them to clean the fan and heatsink. You can check your warranty here:
http://www13.itrc.hp.com/service/ewarranty/warrantyResults.do?admit=109447627+1286541891570+28353475
If it is out of warranty, consider searching for the maintenance manual for your specific model, in the manual there are schematics for taking apart the laptop. Cleaning the fan is much easier that removing a motherboard, so don't feel to intimidated by the idea. Also you can remove the heatsink and then remove the thermal grease and apply a new layer which also helps alleviate heat related issues.
I hope this helps. If you like my advice and it works for you, please thank me by clicking the Kudos Star under my screen name, thanks!

  • Weird clicking sound every few seconds.

When i open the powerbook from being asleep, it starts up and everything is fine... every few seconds i hear a weird click sound, i'm guessing its the HD, and somthing is wrong with the moving parts. I have not dropped or damaged the powerbook in anyway. I first heard the noise when opening the top after being away few for an hour.
Has anyone else had a problem like this?

With hard drives it's not a matter of if it will fail, it's when. Since they are made of moving parts generally when you begin to hear clicking noises, it's a sign to backup your stuff and then worry about running some diagnostics. If you have applecare you should run techtool and it should tell you with a small margin or error if it's good. Now just because it says that the drive is still good can also not mean that it isn't in the process of going bad. So, keep a good backup of all your stuff on an external drive. I use superduper to do a full backup of my system once a week on a external firewire drive that's bootable if i need it. It will do a "smart update" of your data when you backup after the first time saving you a lot of time.
If you don't have applecare, try and find a friend that does or take your computer to your local apple authorized service center. They will have access to the gsx (global service exchange) website which has specific diagnostic bootable cd's for each model of computer. They should be able to tell you if it's bad or not. If you find a friend that has applecare, just use his techtool cd. Just Boot from the cd and run the diagnostics, don't install the app on your mac as that would be illegal.
    Hope this helps

  • Freezing screen with weird clicking sound to follow

My MacBook keeps freezing with almost every action I do with it including navigating the internet. It freezes for periods of time and makes this weird clicking sound that stops when my laptop starts working again, does anyone know what could be wrong with it? I've had to reset it once since it wouldn't turn on after the chime. Some one please help!

  • Weird Clicking sound

I might just be making a big deal out of a small thing. But I noticed a couple of days ago the mouse pad on my macbook makings a weird clicking sound prior to me clicking down on it. When I slightly touch the mouse bar there is the annoying clicking sound. Is it a broken spring or something? Does anybody know what I'm talking about and what I should do about it?

This is a very common issue. It will not cause any harm, but if it really bothers you then take it to the apple store. Some people take out the battery, and put a folded up piece of paper on the underside of the tracpad button, then replace the battery on top of it. I have heard this helps, but I have never tried it because I rarely use my button, I just tap the trackpad.

  • I have an hp mini 210-4000 that has had no sound for 48 hours, little help?

    Model: HP Mini 210-4000
    O/S: Windows 7 (starter)
I have had no audio for about 48 hours now and am looking for some help please. At first I thought that it may have been a hardware failure but having done a system check windows is informing me that the internal speaker is enabled and that it is working normally. There has been no physical damage to the notebook either.
I have tried all of the standard troubleshooting techniques that are suggested and have tried restoring everything to the way it was about 4 days ago with no success.
The light next to the mute button has stopped lighting up no matter whether it is set to mute or not. In terms of the software if I perform standard tests and play audio through any programs it is being recognised by everything (speaker icon, 'beats' audio desk, applications etc) but there is just nothing to be heard.
The notebook is set to normally install automatic updates and I have seen from the forums that other people have been experiencing similar problems from across the board. Has an update been released that may have caused this?
Any help that people can offer in rectifying this problem that I'm assuming is software-based would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

  • Weird clicking sound, iMac freezes or is dead slow, and turns itself off!

I've had my iMac for a good 3-4 years, during which it has been fitted with a new hard drive.
About a year ago, during watching DVDs, there was a weird click-clack sound for a good 10 seconds which was followed by the freeze. Sometimes it would go off, but sometimes the Mac would turn itself off like it had run out of juice. I thought it might've been a power issue.
Nowadays it almost every time presents this clicking sound, and freezing is inevitable. Sometimes there's no warning, the power just goes off. I have unplugged all devices that are using power ie. iPod, but the problem persists.
Could this be a mere power issue? What can the clicking sound be a symptom of?
I'm doing back-up in case the Mac completely shuts down, but I have hope for the machine yet!
I have few months warranty left, keen to sort this out pronto! All comments warmly welcome.
    Anne

As I was making the clone with SuperDuper, the process was halted by an error, and I found half of my stuff copied on the external hard drive. It had enough space, but it prompted a dodgy file in 'Frameworks' in the Library which stopped the process. It all looked very benign, and I checked the troubleshooting and it suggested to try again after restarting.
What in fact had happened, was that ALL my music files had disappeared from my hard drive, none of my applications would work on my Mac, even Safari or iTunes, and I was left last night with the blue screen of death. These files were nowhere to be found, ANY of the hard drives.
    Ready to chuck the piece.
Thanks for all your advice but this time, it made it worse. I'm getting the Mac a new hard drive as it's still under warranty. As it's the third time I've lost my files, there's hardly a scratch on me.. Taught me not to get attached to things too much.

  • Weird clicking sound from PB

This is not my week. Just replaced the harddrive on my PB due to a crashed drive. Before I changed the drive, I had this clicking noice, actually sounds like its coming from the speakers. But I do not think so, as no matter what I do with the volume it remains the same. Well, I did not really pay any attention to it as I assumed it was the faulty drive that caused it. Now when I changed the drive, ran a hardware test and all is ok and the PB is spinning on I realize the clicking noise is not gone. It seems to be coming from the right top side of the computer. Its sporadic, but, it never starts from the beginning when you fire the computer up. Seems like the computer needs to get warm first. Could it be the fan? How would I go about finding the source of this clicking sound, and is there a way to see if you have a faulty fan? Hope someone could point me in the right direction as I do not know where to go from here.
    Thanks in advance
    Fridge

I just plugged in a pair of earphones, and the clicking stopped. So I guess it is the speakers after all then. Is there anything I can do to make it stop? The speakers are in good condition and are not cracked or damaged by any means. Just this clicking sound from the speakers.

  • Weird click sound from trackpad

There's a strange clicky sound on my trackpad when just sliding around, not clicking.
It only happens on the left side.. it sounds like a light tapping of fingernail on the aluminum. Sometimes it goes away but its there like 90% of the time and is really annoying to hear/feel slight clicks when just tracking... does anyone else have this problem? anyone figure a fix?
Last time I sent this thing into apple it took THREE WEEKS to get it back =O. So I'm trying to find another fix first. Thanks guys!

I get a clicking sound that sounds kind of like rain from one of those rain makers sometimes when the mac is on my lap and not totally horizontal. It must be coming from one of the fans. Here's an mp3 of the sound:
    http://mike.is/clicking.mp3
Any idea if this is problematic? It seems like it's not actually doing anything harmful.

  • IPod is making weird clicking sounds and not responding...

I dropped my IPod last night and it fell onto concrete. Of course.
Right after - It froze on a list menu and would not respond to anything, including being plugged in to the computer. Now the screen is just going from the apple logo to the unhappy IPod picture, and its still making these crunching clicking sounds. Any ideas would be helpful thanks.

i believe the hard drive has been jarred enough to no longer be functional. Unfortunately apple will not cover accidental damage even if its within warranty.
The ipod sad face means that the hard drive is irreparable, If your ipod is within warranty you can go ahead and try to speak to an ipod tech support for some assistance in getting a repair... If it isnt, i heard about a site called www.iresq.com
Theyre a third party repair service for ipods and apple equipment... however i dont know their credibility.
I hope this helps, im sorry for your loss.

  • Weird clicking vacuum sound?

    Hi,
When I press the back of my iPhone 4s, about the space between the Apple logo and the min-volume button, I hear a weird clicking sound. Almost like the glass back is not glued on correctly or something causing the vacuum inside to change... It even happens when I barely touch the area I described, and also when the phone is turned off (so it's definately a hardware problem).
It's pretty annoying, kind of loud, and I'm a bit scared that my phone is gonna fall apart one of these days!
Note: this is definately NOT the camera-clicking sounds I've been reading about on this board (I have that too, but that doesn't bother me as much as this weird noise).
Anybody else with this issue? What should I do? Contact Apple to get an exchange?

  • Weird and Irritating Clicking sound on Touchpad Macbook Pro

I've had this weird clicking sound since June. It won't go away.
Of course my laptop didn't fall, nor bump nor anything else that might have damaged it. The Touchpad sounds as if it's loose. There's a clear difference with the sound the touchpad makes when you "press" it, but it shouldn't make a sound when you "touch" it.
I've made a Youtube movie about it and people react stating they have the same problem.

Can this be fixed? Will this fall under Apple warranty?
    Who can help?

  • Strange clicking sound on MBA 1.8/64MB SSD

I got my MBA 1.8 / 64MB SSD today and it's great. The only really annoying thing is that after appx. one hour of usage a not very loud clicking sound started. It's a double click sound that repeats every 6 seconds. I tried to restart the MBA but the clicking sound remains. It seems to come from the right side of the MBA, near to the power switch.
Even though it's not very loud it gets very annoying since it is a repeating sound.
Does anybody know about this proble?

Hi everyone, this is my first post, yay! Anyways, I also am getting that weird clicking sound every few seconds and then it doesnt do it for a while. I have a 1.6/80 MBA and the clicking started last night. They occur one at a time at different time intervals, sometimes every 6 seconds, 15 seconds, I have even timed them over 2 minutes which is weird. I installed iStat Pro and the fan speed shows up fine, just under 2500RPM. I am guess its my harddrive...
On some occasions I have noticed while typing, I get a sudden lag followed by the click and it is all normal after that. Anyone having this issue on here? Thank you for any replies. I made a reservation for the genius bar, the sad part is that I just got this wonderful machine on Friday afternoon and today is Monday! Oh well, hopefully Apple can replace it for me.

i had an X300 and it never clicked.   without actually hearing it, it's difficult to say if it's a severe issue.   use your best judgment here.   service's phone number is 800-426-7378 if you decide to send it in for a checkup.

  • "Click" Sounds on Wake-Up

Every time I wake up my iMac from "Sleep Mode" 3 or more hours, it makes some weird clicking sound while trying to prompt me with the window to enter my password. Can this be fixed easily or is my computer just getting old?

The weird clicking could be the first sign of a dying hard drive. I suggest your clone/backup your system immediately (I use SuperDuper!) and then run Disk Utility to check your drive.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot from your internal drive and repair permissions.
You might also want to run Apple Hardware Test, which is either on your install disc #1 or #2, insert the disc and boot holding down the D key.

  • Clicking sound when charging and playing

My ipod makes a really weird clicking sound when it's charging and playing music and videos either though the clicker isn't on.

I have tried just about everything very methodicly.
Got Tune Tech for iPod software and cleaned everything, tried the diagnostic mode to see if everything was OK. I was thinking on the lines of some sort of macanical/electronic failure (SDRAM) but everything was all right
So I plunged in and retrograded to firmware 1.2 and VOILA !
The instructions found on MacIntouch were very simple and easy to do.
My faithfull 5G iPod is back to good working order....for now !
    No more freeze when charging.
I hope Apple will adress this firmware problem in the next update.
