Mini a1176 - 2.16ghz core 2 duo - second monitor

hey all,
recently picked up a used mini, core 2 duo @ 2.16ghz, model a1176 to replace my aging g5 and boy do i miss my second monitor.
i have seen usb video cards and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what to get and, how it will impact the overall performance of the machine. i.e. if there are different options, which would run a second screen better with a better refresh rate.
any suggestion is appreciated! my budget would be sub $100 as i am also looking to upgrade the ram from 2gb to 3gb.

Because there is a lot of buggy stuff about 10.7.x. For instance,
Wifi does not maintain a steady connection when using a non-airport wireless router (maddening when it goes "looking for Networks" when there is a steady signal coming from the modem. This is consistently a buzz-kill when streaming virtually any video, and consistently happens w/ netfix.
No, it's not the wifi router. Non-Apple equip has rock steady wifi signal and smooth, HD streaming.
Hardwired w/ Cat5, streaming video is no problem--and yes, I have trashed and reloaded Airport Utility, which definitely appears to be the culprit.
Itunes does all kinds of wonky things w/ smart playlists, etc/. etc.
Bluetooth has a mind of it's own--forgetting it's already paired to an Apple keyboard and trackpad when I power up another Mac within 20 feet.
DVD Player is so eratic I have given up and gone to VLC altogether--not quite as elegant an interface, but at least it's consistent AND alows me to jump over the junk promos studios insist I can't skip when played on DVD Player
In short —All the usual loose ends the software update never gets around to addressing, but that typically an upgrade will fix.
Theoretically, Mtn. Lion will only work on 2009 and later Mini's, but aside from buggy OS, (and, uh, eratic breaks in wifi signal) this mini works fine as a media center.
So what happens if I try to upgrade?
Is there perhaps a firmware update or a work around?
Yes, I am aware the unit is 5 years old, but I am strongly opposed to being strong-armed into buying new equip because of Apple's ever increasing tendency to eliminate legacy compatibillity. Sure it's good for Apple, but terrible for both the environment and people like me on a fixed income in this economy. Why toss a perfectly functional unit just to make the richest corporation in the world (or 2nd, whatever) richer?

Must admit it escapes why Mtn Lion should not be more broadly accessible, except for the blatant greed factor, which is growing increasingly tiresome.
I bought my 1st PowerBook in the late 80's for close to $3,000 and was a loyal evangelist for decades—both purchasing and recommending many, many Macs, until I started to buy a new MacBook Pro last year and encountered all that thunderbolt/HDMI baloney. Then I started taking a harder look at whether Apple was genuinely attemtping to meet loyal user's needs, or simply exploiting the strength of the brand by non-legacy compatibility to drive increased sales.
Looking around a tad after I posted, the erratic wifi problem appears to be endemic--not just minis and not just 10.7.
I've gone through all the fixes, but Lion stubbornly persists in giving the flakest wif around--which is my main reason for wanting to try Mtn. Lion. The rest of the new, uh, "features" definitely strike me as onanistic tweaking added gimmicks in the OS for tweaker's sake--no significant gain in usability.
Remember when stability was the Apple OS's chief virtue? Ah, those were the days!
Now I am waiting for the Kool-Aid quaffers to start wising up before I can begin shorting the grossly over-valued stock. The iPhone is losing ground fast. Arrogant development and marketing strategies the likes of which driving Apple these days never last forever. Remember as well when Microsoft caused fear and trembling with it's heedless hegemony? Or how about IBM? Or AOL? Technology has a way of dealing with hubris.

Mac Mini 2007 2ghz Intel Core 2 Duo With 4gigs of Memory

So I have a mac mini model #MB139LL/A When I bought it it had 2gigs of ram and a 120 gb hard drive I upgraded the ram to 2 x 2gb 667 DDR2. The ram upgrade was done probably about a year ago,I am not sure if it is using the ram because I read this model only will take up to 2 x 1 gb of ram. I thought it was OK because the machine recognizes the ram and I have never had an issue. My question is it using that ram or not? should I convert back to the original sticks of ram?

So it looks like everything is normal, but it's kinda weird if the machine was only made to support up to 2 GB.. I guess it's a good thing.

You're at pretty much the minimum for Lion. It should work, but that model didn't have a dedicated graphics chip, so some of the Lion eye candy may run slower for you. (i.e.: Launchpad, Mission Control.)
If you did want to run Lion, I'd recommend more RAM. That model is limited to 3GB of RAM max, but if you plan to have more than just Mail and Safari open, you'll need more than 2GB of RAM.
I'm running Lion on a 2009 Mini C2D 2.0GHz, but I upgraded to 8GB of RAM. My model also has a dedicated graphics chip, and even with that, HD video podcast playback in iTunes has a slight stutter.
So I think that Lion on your model is possible, just barely. I'd stick with Leopard or Snow Leopard (which ever you had) and upgrade to Lion only if I really needed iCloud.

Mini (2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo) partially ejects CD

I have a Mac Mini that has worked fine for a little less than a year but in late November started having a problem with the integrated optical drive. It consistently will accept new CDs/DVDs but has a hard time ejecting them. When I right click on the CD on the destop and select "Eject [disc name]" it begins to push the CD out, gets about 1/4" out, pauses, and then reinjects the disc and reads it normally. If I'm quick, I can grab the CD as it starts to poke out and manually pull it out of the drive, but if I'm not quiclk, it just reinserts into the drive. No problems reading discs, I just can't easily get them out. It seems more like a mechanical problem. Anyone else run into this?

Contact your Apple service provider or Apple store, there is either something wrong with the drive or it is out of line with the case.
Also note, your Mac's hardware is covered for one year or for three if you have AppleCare.

"Aperture (3.2) cannot be opened because of a problem." on MBP Core 2 Duo, 10.7.2

I recently upgraded to 3.2 from the App Store and was able to run the program until today. I am now completely unable to open it. I have tried the standard troubleshooting, including moving the application support files to the desktop, deleting the com.apple.aperture preference file, opening while holding CMD and option, and reinstalling. I have also tried moving my Aperture Library to start the program fresh. Nothing has worked; the same "cannot be opened" error persists.
I have read about other users having issues with the program constantly crashing, but that specific problem appears limited to Intel Core Duo processors, while mine is an Intel Core 2 Duo running on a MBP 3,1. I am starting this thread to find out if any with similar specs have had the same issue and known how to resolve it. Thank you in advance for your help!

Difference between Intel Core Duo and Intel Core 2 Duo

I bought my MBP in November of last year, before the update on the Pros. However, it says about the new Pros that they have Intel Core 2 Duo processors, which are faster than the Intel Core Duos of previous MBPs. I know I bought mine before they updated them, but my "About This Mac" says that mine has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. So, did they update the processors before this latest update, or do have one of the new Macbooks somehow, or what happened? And, is there any difference between my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and a 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo?

Only the original Intel machines came with Core Duo processors. The principal difference is that Core Duos are 32-bit and Core 2 Duos are 64-bit processors. There were also increases in available clock speed, L2 cache, and frontside bus speed. The first models only addressed 2 GBs of RAM. Later models had a different memory controller that enabled 3 GBs of user accessible RAM (4 GBs installed) and even later models such as yours had a memory controller that enabled accessing 4 GBs of RAM (4 GBs installed.)
The first Intel Minis came with a Core Solo processor which had only one core instead of two.

New Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro

So Apple released a higher spec MBP within a year of launching the MBP, and the new MBP costs less too. This is a bit sore for me, even though I have been using my MBP a lot since April when I bought it.
Now the entry level MBP comes with 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo, 120GB HDD(50% more), 1 GB RAM (again 50% more than the 1.83GHz MBP) and the DVD writer is now dual layer. All these upgrades in 6 months of my purchase. I felt a bit shortchanged.
I got some freebies,like a free upgrade to 1GB RAM plus some accessories, when I bought my MBP but none can compensate for the newer specs at lower price. The next time I buy a Mac, I am going to squeeze more freebies of the retailer to guard against such drastic upgrades.
It seems like Mac products obsolete at a much faster pace after the switch to Intel chips. Anyone from the PowerPC, Motorola or IBM chips era know whether the non-Intel powered Macs have longer lifespan?

I can't believe some people are complaining about the launch of a new MBP with Core 2 Duo's powering them!
The iMac was upgraded to Core 2 Duo around a month or so ago, this was a big give away folks, so anybody buying an MBP after the iMac upgrade must have no deductive reasoning or lives in a box (with no internet access).
Tan Kia, what do you expect? Technology to remain in one place, never to move on and never improve? Do you read the discussion threads on here? People have been talking about Core 2 Duo machines from about May or June onwards (if not before that).
If you were so interested in the Intel Mac's why not shimmy over to Intel's website, they explain in detail where they're planning to move their technologies to and even give a time frame for the release of these new technologies, like for example a Quad Core Xeon in January 2007 - hold on to your hats Mac Pro owners - are you going to feel cheated too? Knowing this I still bought a Mac Pro. Will I feel cheated when the quad core beast is unleashed? Nope. The current one is way fast enough for my needs. If it starts to slow down and ceases to perform (which could take years), then I will replace it with a faster more powerful machine. It's the best in it's class at present and a joy to use, as I'm sure your MacBook Pro is.
I held off buying a MBP as soon as they were first announced because they only had a 32 bit CPU. I checked Intel's site and saw their roadmap for Core Duo. It was obvious that Apple would launch an upgraded MBP with a 64-bit Core 2 Duo at some point before the end of 2006 (and no doubt a quad core before the end of 2007 and so on as processors evolve more and more cores).
The fact is you made a decision to buy a MBP when you did, becuase it suited you then. There's no need to feel sore about your purchase. You have a MacBook Pro, one of the best laptops around (although not as good as the new upgraded MacBook Pro) it still performs well for you.
Apple didn't need to upgrade their PowerPC machines as often, as it was a completely different architecture working differently to x86 based PC's. Now that Apple have (in some people's views) gone to the dark side (Intel x86), Apple are now on the same footing as PC makers.
Intel launch new technologies quickly, PC makers respond quickly. It's always been the way with PC's. If Apple want to compete squarely in the same market as PC's, Mac's run Windows too, they have to lauch new technologies either before or as soon as a competitor does. If they don't, Apple couldn't trumpet their best, fastest, cheaper (as far as direct comparisons go etc) claims.
Just enjoy your computer and be grateful you bought a Mac over a PC.

Mac Mini Core 2 Duo died and now won't boot - any help or advice appreciated...

Hi, all
I have a core 2 duo Mac Mini (possibly a 2008 model?) which has been retro-fitted with a superdrive at some point in its life and was running Lion.
It used to be left running 24/7, but one day I returned to find it powered down and it will not boot up at all now. Applying power and then pressing the power button results in the cpu fan starting, and the HD spinning up - the white power indicator lights steady, but other than that there is no sign of life - no noises, beeps, no display, nothing.
I'm not averse to getting the lid off (I've opened up a fair few mini's before ) so any suggestions as to what my next step should be?
As an aside, the Intel minis have a small push button on the logic board, about half-way down the right hand side - what is this for?

I have tried the SMC reset (which, unless I have misunderstood occurs as a result of removing all power for a while then reconnecting the psu and turning on as normal after a few seconds delay) with no luck.
The PRAM reset is a bit of a problem, though, as I do not appear to have any keyboard function - I'm using an aluminium Apple keyboard and mighty mouse (both are the wired variety, plugged into separate USB ports), but the 'boot' process doesn't appear to get far enough to enable operationof the keyboard (shift lock light doesn't light if appropriate key pressed), so I can't give it the 4-finger death grip at power up. The mouse illuminates, and I've tried all 4 USB ports, BTW...
I forgot to add to the previous post that there is 2GB RAM fitted, and both Bluetooth and Airport.
