Mini crashed while updating to 10.4.6; will not boot up

My Mac Mini crashed on me while I was installing the 10.4.6 update [and yes, I did repair permissions beforehand]. Now, I can't even get my computer to boot up. On top of that, I can't do much of anything when booting up from the installation disk—I get a major error while attempting to repair the disk & Disk Utility tells me to restart, and I get an unknown error when attempting to reinstall the original 10.4 system w/ the 10.4.5 [or part of 10.4.6, who knows?] system in a Previous System Folder. I don't want to have to erase my entire hard drive and start from scratch, but I'm running out of options. Please help!

You might like to try the procdedure I user to recover my mini here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=433929&tstart=0
Or the archive and install option on the tiger instll might give you what you need.
if you need to mount another drive, it'll need to be formated as an apple hfs partition, as in yet another bliding flash of genius, the dvd recovery environment won't allow you to mount a fat/msdos partition.
the command you're looking for is mount, and would be something like
mount /dev/disk5s0 <path to a mountpoint directory>
the mountpoint dir can be any empty directory you have.

I interrupted a software update and my macbook pro will not boot. I have tried to reboot using the startup disc, I have tried to verify the disc, and repair the disc. It tells me I need to erase and reformat the hard drive then reinstall the operating system. I do not have a back up of all my applications, my garageband music and other things. I also do not have time capsule set up on this machine, but I do have a 2 TB time capsule.
Is there anyway to back up this corrupted drive so I can restore my applications later?

There's an old saying.  If you don't have a backup disc, then there must be nothing important to backup.  That's just lesson #1.  Lesson #2 is to never interrupt a software update.  Not a good thing.
OK, I'm sure you know this.  It just upsets me to read your story, knowing you have a lot of important stuff on your hard drive, and didn't use time machine.
You're pretty much in a bad place.  My only hope for you is to boot to your Installation Disc, then using disk utility see if you can save the internal hard drive (by fixing what can be fixed).  You might be able to see your user folder and some of your apps.  I wouldn't even consider copying the library, because who knows what's been corrupted in there.
    Good luck.

  • Powerbook G4 updated to 10.5.8 will not boot

I have had OSX 10.5 installed on one of my  hard drives for quite some time and use it occasionally. Yesterday I installed the update to 10.5.8 and it will not boot anymore.  The updater reported a successful installation, but when trying to boot from 10.5.8, the little lines in the startup circle keep going around for up to a half hour without end.  Unfortunately, I  cannot find my original 10.5 upgrade disk, though  I  still have the  packaging and documentation that came with it.
    Please help.

Did you update on-line using Software Update, or download the update file and install off-line?
Will it boot in Safe Mode? See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)

  • My mac book pro does not boot up correctly anymore after doing some updates. I did have my ipod charging to my mac book. I ran the simple updates and never go to the maverick update and now my computer will not boot correctly. Help!

Please help my computer is not repsonding after doing some simple updates. I follow the instructions and which is simply click for the update to take place. I did what I was instructed to do. I did not do the new update for the Mavericks yet. I just did simple updates. The computer shutted down and restarted but would never get pass the grey screen with the spinning wheel and the booting bar that would not go past a certain point befor shutting off again. The computer is practically brand new. I purchased the computer from best by 2012 and the warrenty just ended the past October. I hardly use the computer maybe 4 times since I have had it because I have another main computer that I uses. However, I don't want to do a hard rest becuase I do have the entire adobe suits software that I paid for and don't want to loose. I have an appointment with apple today to see what they say but I hope that my computer that I hardly every use is not defected after doing a updated pushed by Apple. Any thoughts or suggestions???? Thanks in advance Apple Family :-)

Well, I was at Apple for sometime on that day. I got a Genius that did not want to work. She basically jumped to the money to tell me that my hard drive was no good and that I was out of warranty (October 2013). I began to explain to her that I had only used the computer 5 times and that I don't use this computer as my main computer because I also have a Toshiba that is less expensive that I have had for several years and not one issue out of it. The rep told me that I could by a new hard drive for $161.00 and that I would loose all of my software and photos that I have on this computer. However, I told her that it's bazaar that it happens right after my warranty goes out and had I used it more often when in warranty before October then I would have been covered. Keeping in mind that I would still be very disappointed with the product because I would loose all of my information and it would not make sense to me why the hard drive fails on a very gently used computer. So I asked for a manager and it took her some time to get one. In the mean time I watched how the other Geniuses interacted with the other customers and seen that they were very engaging with convo and very help. I guess I just I got another lemon when I got my rep. When the manager finally came. I went from A-Z with the issues and that I felt that something could or should be done because the rep said that she did tests on my machine and it read to her that my hard drive was bad and there was nothing that could be done. I explained that I was not looking forward to paying for services to have my new computer repaired. The manager offered to give me 25% off the cost but I still didn't feel that it was effective. After he left and the rep wrote the notes in the system, I told her that I didn't think that all options had been exhausted and that there was something else that could be done. I told her to erase the machine and see if the updates could be installed and if the system would continue to do the same thing. The rep was hesitant and said that I would loose everything which we already know that we were at conclusion from the beginning. She assured me that I would happen again and that I would need a new hard drive. I just told her to erase the machine and get me another manager because I was just getting tired of her unhelpfulness and negative perspective. The new manager came and was very pleasant and I explained everything once again from A-Z. I informed him that I had the machine erased and that I need his help with options because I don't feel that the rep or the last manager was resourceful or helpful. He apologies for the actions of the reps and proceed to tell me that they will run all the updates in the store and that if it booted correctly that I should continue to use the machine with out adding the adobe software back on just incase that it crashes again and I'm out of money once again. However, if it does happen again and it is a hard drive issues that he would work with me to resolve the issues. As my computer went through the process of rebooting from out of the box stage another rep approached me because he could tell that I was upset and not happy. I told he what had happen and he said I think I can help you a little more. He said that I just want to run further testing on you computer for different components to make sure that everything would work properly and pin point any issues. I was delighted with that option. Anything would help at this time especially someone who is willing to help. The first test that he ran was to for the hard drive and he said that since it failed the test the first time could be because the software update glitch and did update correctly which would make the test faulty and be negative. As I sit with finger crossed the test came back as a pass test that my hard drive was not the issue and that the update was the cause and that I did not have to buy a new hard drive. I was happy that the computer was ok but I lost information. All of the updates were done in the store and everything works fine now. If I was not persistent about my gut feeling then I would had left out thinking that I had to pay for a new hard drive that I really didn't needed. Now I can invest that money in a external hard drive to start backing up my information. Lesson learned by I'm still on the fence about things but I hope all is well. I really went through a lot. No help or no service was not an option that I was taken.  I hope that it helps.

  • After System Update last night, the system will not boot with IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504 error

I have had Lion for a 2, 3 months on the iMac 27 inch purchased last October (2011). Last night I chose to update the system, and deselected iMoves update because it was 1GB, and chose only 4 updates, including iTunes, Safari (i think)... But the update says error, and ask to restart the system (it won't restart itself, so I waited 30 minutes, and then pressed the Power button for 10 seconds, to let it power down, and press Power again to power it up).
However, after that, the system failed to boot up, showing a
    panic(cpu 0 caller .....)" "Unable to finder driver for this platform: \"ACPI\". ... xnu-1699.26.8/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504
This is not typical of the upgrade process. So I searched the Internet forIOPlatformExpert.cpp:1504 and some people said it is a hard drive error, but then I powered down and pressed Options when booting up, and was able to boot to Windows 7 (bootcamp)... and was able to boot to the "Recovery", which let me choose

    Disk Utility
what should I do now to fix it so that it can boot again?

This error is caused by one of the updates you applied, namely the Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.  Many people have been affected by it, including me.  I did what Linc Davis has suggested above to fix it.  The most extensive discussion about the problem, with ways to fix the problem, is here:

  • Updating tiger and mac os will not boot after download finished

    Hi all.
I updated my mac tiger os on my mac book pro last friday. There were approximately 10 updates to do so i excepted them and all downloaded and i installed them all.
I was then asked to restart so i did.
On restart my mac is now stuck with a black screen. The mac boots up as normal all the keyboard functions work. the cd drive works if i insert a disk and the the mac will go into sleep mode if i close the lid. I have tried everything suggested in other threads, taking out battery, ram , doing the resets etc. I have no video output via the dvi connection so i cant put a monitor on it. I cant reboot with the cd as nothing comes up on the screen so i cant do anything. I have returned it to the pc world store i bought it from and there tec repair guys had it for 3 days and couldnt do anything with it. I have spoken to apple and they are refusing to doing anything with it as its 3 weeks outside its years warrenty. I am at my wits end with this as i now have a £1500 pound laptop that doesnt work. The laptop has never had any issues prior to the updates taking place, it was only immediately after the update that the issue occurred. If i hadnt done the update i would still have a fully working mac. I believe some of the updates were firmware updates and its taken out the video controls on the laptop rendering the screen useless. Any help would be great.
    Jas.

One more question if you don't mind. I was just sitting here thinking about it, and I want to make sure i'm fully prepared when I get home later to work on this.
If I'm able to get the drive door open, and I place my Tiger disk into the drive, will the computer automatically boot from the Tiger cd when I start the system back up, or is there anything else I need to do to get the computer to boot from the cd. I was just concerned about the system not recognizing the cd in the drive with the start up issue I am having. Unfortunately I'm still new to Mac's and learning how they operate.

  • Mountain Lion Update Doesn't Finish - Laptop will not boot

    Hi,
Last night I saw that there was a Mountain Lion update available for my MacBook Pro.  I've always updated my software as the updates became available.  I had several other apps to update, so I chose "Update All".
I got a message at the end that the installation required a reboot, however, the MacBook Pro could not restart as it said that FireFox was canceling the restart.  I looked and the FireFox add-in XMarks was stuck in some type of failed sync mode, and couldn't be stopped.  I was also unable to force FireFox to quit.
After an hour of this, I finally just had to press the off button and power down.  I assumed that the software update would still continue when I restarted my computer, but all that I have is just a grey screen with the Apple logo and a circular progress indicator that has been going in a circle for about 7 hours.
I guess my first question would be, "How do I actually boot into my MacBook Pro and get past this grey screen".
Is my laptop hosed?  If so, how would I go about reinstalling Mountain Lion?  I bought my MacBook Pro on June 21, 2012, so everything should be compatible.  I have previously updated to Mountain Lion without any problems.
I'd like to find some way to be able to boot up my MacBook and skip this grey screen.  But, if I'm just in disaster recovery mode, how would I obtain a Mountain Lion install DVD?  I've already paid for the update.
    Thanks,
    William

I found out how to get to the disk utilities.  I also did a verbose log of the boot-up process, and it hung right after it said that the handshake with my internet connection was complete.
So, for others, Command-R at the boot tone got me to the Disk Utilities, and Command-V at the boot tone gave me verbose logging of the bootup process.
I repaired my disk and permissions, and nothing changed, so I decided to reinstall Mountain Lion.
    Thanks,
    William

  • After trying to update/reinstall iTunes, now Windows7 will not boot.

After iTunes update would not install, I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled. Then once I finally got iTunes to open, it would not recognize my iPhone 5 when I connected it. Then my computer froze up. So I did a hard reboot, and before Windows even opens, it goes to a screen that says it can't boot. It gives me two choices, either Start Windows Normally or go to Windows Repair. No matter which choice I pick it does the same thing, tries to run but ends up back at same screen. I can use F8 to get to the boot menu, but it won't start in Safe Mode or any other way.

iPod touch 3rd generation crashed while updating, and now it won't turn on, and it won't charge or be recognized in iTunes because it's completely dead; it's been dead for 3 days now. I've tried pressing home/sleep buttons for reset but nothing works, I've tried using different usb ports to charge it, but nothing seems to work. Please help asap. ...Thanks!(:

After charging the iPod for half an hour, see if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

My iphone crashed while updating to latest update now my PC doesnt recognise iphone 4 just shows USB

This has happened to me too! Whatever I do isnt working! Have phoned Apple 3 times and each assistant has given me something new to do and none of them worked! So frustrating!
The help the support website gives is useful, and what they go through with you anyway. Other than that I was advised to try a new cable or USB port or try another computer to restore it on and then 'back it up from restore' on my computer after..
Hope one of these helps you guys! They were no good to me but you never know!!

  • Crashed while updating Thumbs and hangs up now

iMovie crashed while updating thumbs and hangs up now. What can I do to reset it?

Go into your Movies folder in the Finder, and look for the "iMovie Events" folder: inside that folder there is a is an "Event" folder associated with each of your iMovie 7 projects. In each Event folder there is a "Thumbnails" folder containing the generated thumbnails fot that event (project).
Try deleting the offending (crashing) thumbnails or the whole "Thumbnails" folder for the crashing project. It worked for me.
PS: Apple should add a -- cancel -- button on the preview creation sheet, as there is actually no visible/invisible way to cancel or stop preview/thumbnails creation. The preview creation for the added videos was estimated at -- 612 minutes -- on my MacBook core2duo. That is exactly how I realized there was no cancel button, and no working shortcuts either (no escape key, no command-period would work).

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.
    If that should fail...

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -fy Enter
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    # The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    # Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

This morning, I made a new "customer" and downloaded the "trial version" of CC2014 photoshop. This resulted a working CC2014. I hope Adobe can fix my "real" account which does not work at this time.
    Anyone else tried this?

I don't think everyone with a Mac is having basic problems with Photoshop 2014.1.
What exact versions do you have in each case?  Is your updated version 2014.1, while the "new customer" version is 2014.0?  Choose Help - System Info to see.
Sounds like, given your specific system, you may want to try a full clean and reinstall, or maybe a downgrade to 2014.0 until 2014.1.1 or 2014.2 comes out.  I think the older versions are available through the Creative Cloud application.
