  • Mini Ipod won't turn on! Reset not working! Help!

I had not charged my ipod since I was away from home. Got home and plugged the USB into the Ipod. Next morning, noticed the Ipod blinking the apple sign and it would not turn on. I let the Ipod drain for 2 days. Now it's no longer blinking the Apple sign when I plug in the USB, but now it will show any sign of life at all. When USB plugged, I hear a soft beeping noise from the Ipod. Tried resetting Ipod holding Menu and Select for 6-10 seconds several times, no luck. Tried updating the Ipod, but it's not recognizing Ipod when it's plugged in (It says to plug in Ipod, when it already is plugged in). I restarted PC 2x and plugged USB into all three different ports. USB ports working since I can transfer pictures from my digital camera using the USB ports. HELP! What else can I try before I take into an Apple store? I didn't pruchase it at Apple, rather, I purchased it at Circuit City less than 6 months ago. I can't go through the service on line since it's not recognizing my serial number.

thanks!! i tried that this past weekend and i thought it worked. i didn't get home yet so i couldn't update my ipod. so i attempted to use it. it worked for awhile and then during some songs it will say the battery is dead and die on me. i tried resetting it but it didn't work. it was fully charged, and now it won't turn on. this time, no blinking apple sign, but when i plug it in to my usb, it makes that same sound. i don't have an ac charger and used my sisters. so now, i guess i have to try again? any other ideas? they are greatly appreciated!

  • My mini suddenly won't turn off

I'm not sure if I accidentally splashed a teeny bit of water on it (ugh!!) but tonight I can't get it to work right. It won't turn off when I push the off button and it seems to haphazardly go from "music" to "songs" and is just not working correctly. Is there a reset button anywhere on the mini or am I screwed?
    Thanks
    Jamie

    To reset your iPod mini:
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step

  • Mac Mini fan won't turn off (only while powered on)

Unlike some stories i've read while crawling around the internet trying to solve MY problem, it's not that my fan won't shut off EVER. The fan shuts down when i put it in sleep mode or shut down the Mini. No problems there. But while the computer is in operation, the fan runs non-stop.
It wasn't always like this. In the 2.5 years i've had my Intel Mac Mini, it has more and more frequently employed the fan. As of the last couple months, the fan is now in continuous use, as long as the computer is in operation. In addition, all the programs take much longer to load, and i'm dealing with programs crashing (Firefox & Safari far more than anything), Bluetooth not functioning, and the front light on my Mini is out.
As for the fan, the Mini is getting plenty of breathing room...even more than it had before the problem. I also have 22GB left on my Mini's hard disk.
Are all these problems related? Am i really just working on my last thruster here? Is my dilitium crystal just about dead? Is a warp core breach imminent? I do not have AppleCare, and i don't know if the Apple Store would look at it for free if i brought it in. Any help (no matter how small) would be greatly appreciated.
    MY STUFF:
    Mac Mini - 1.66 Intel Core Duo, 2G 667 HHz DDR2 SDRAM
Iomega MiniMax 1TB external HD (for audio/video files)
Iomega Minimax 1TB external HD (for Time Machine)
    OSX 10.5.6

When you start your mini from cold (after at least an hour powered down) does the fan spin up to full speed immediately, or does it start out normally and then speed up after a few minutes or so? Did you have the system open for any reason just before this behavior started?
If you had the system open, it might be something as simple as the fan control cable that is not connected. When disconnected, the fan will run at full speed all the time.
It the fan runs at full speed almost immediately from cold, then it would suggest one of two things: either the system is suffering from something like a loose heatsink, or there is an errant process running that is putting the system under heavy load. You can check that by opening Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) at looking to see if the CPU load is consistently high. If it is, look for a process that is causing it.
If the fan runs quietly at first, and then speeds up, after a few minutes, then it does seem likely to be a heating issue. Aside from making sure the vents around the base and on the back are clear by using a good vacuum cleaner, it's possible there is enough debris inside to obstruct the airflow. If you've opened up the system previously for any reason, now might be a good time to do so again, for a quick inspection and clean out.
I would also perform an SMC reset if you have not already done so:
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
And to ensure you are not suffering from a range of broad 'tuning' type issues, download a copy of YASU (http://jimmitchelldesign.com/projects/yasu/) and run all tasks. This clears cache files, resets logs files, updates prebinding, performs a permission repair and a few other tasks. After the reboot (which will be slower than usual) your system should run a little better.
... i don't know if the Apple Store would look at it for free if i brought it in....
You can make an appointment at the 'genius Bar' of your local Apple store - they will look at your system for free, and help with a diagnosis. What they generally wont do without charging for it is anything that involves opening the system up. However, it's worth paying them a visit for a bit of hands on work!

  • Encore Mini 7" won't turn on or charge

I got this Toshiba Encore Mini 7" and I opend it as a Christmas present. When I unwrapped it I opened it tried turning it on it didn't so I decided to charge it I waited for like 3 hours and didn't turn on. Any suggestions? Thank you

Well I never saw anything like this before (from WT7 Quick Start):"USB Charge – In “sleep or shutdown mode,” you can charge your tablet byconnecting the USB power cable to your tablet and the USB port on yourcomputer. Please make sure your computer is turned ON while charging viaUSB. If your computer is turned OFF, depending on computer specifications, the tablet battery may discharge. We recommend that you do not use yourtablet while charging via USB as auto shutdown may occur if the batterycharge is too low." From User's Guide:"Power button—Turns the device on and off. Press and hold the button for several seconds to turn the deviceON/OFF. Press the button quickly to wake the device from Sleep mode or to place it into Sleep mode."

  • Power PC G4 - won't turn on

I've got a PowerMac G4 (IBM processor) that is used as a server for some old but important files and it seems to have "died" - won't turn on at all. Could it just be the Lithium Battery is dead? Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem. I went to power on my old G4 and it just died. The button light came on for a split second then nothing. Now I get no lights, no sounds at all. I really need this old work horse. If anyone can help me get this trusty steed up and running, I would appreciate it. I hate to put it out to pasture.
P.S. I have no idea why I used all the horse references

  • I tried to update my sons iPad and now it won't turn on or off just a picture of a cable and I tunes symbol. Can it be fixed or is it broken I've seen posts saying their iPads died after doing updates.

I tried to update my sons iPad now it won't turn on or off it shows a cable and iTunes symbol tried holding down sleep button & screen button but no luck does this mean it's Broken I've seen posts saying their iPad died after doing updates.

It's not broken, it just means that the iPad has gone into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
You will need to connect the iPad, via its cable, to a computer's iTunes (you will need an up-to-date version of iTunes installed on the computer), and you should then be able to reset the iPad and restore/resync the content to it.

My iPhone 4 has been dead for 24 hours and I've been charging it for 12 hours and it still won't turn on. I have tried holding the lock button and home button down, even connected it to computer but nothing's happening, it randomly died on me.

    Hi Lauren,
When troubleshooting power issues, we want to make sure we have followed all steps outlined in the following article:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
    - Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    - Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion.
    Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    - Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    - After at least 15 minutes, if:
                   - The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
                   - The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
                   - Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    - If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
                   - If the display turns on, go to step 4.
                   - If the display remains black, go to next step.
    - Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to
restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    - If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I'm trying to restore factory setting on my ipad mini and I keep getting error 2001.  It won't turn on and won't restore.

I've been trying to fix my sister in law's ipad mini.  When I plug the ipad mini into itunes it say's it needs to restore factory settings.  When I do that, it tries to do it, but then says it can't because of an unknown error 2001.  I've tried it over and over, unplugged it and plugged it back in, tried to restore numerous times and the same thing keeps coming up.  It won't turn on and the screen just shows that I need to plug it into itunes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you may be unable to update or restore.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use the USB cable that came with your device, or a different Apple USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port directly on your computer. Don't plug it into your keyboard.
    Try a different computer.
If necessary, resolve any further issues with the USB connection, then with your security software.
If you're still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues by following the next section.

These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.

  • Mac Mini won't turn over

    Hi folks,
A mac mini in my household won't turn over. It gets to the grey Apple screen with the spinning search circle, but stays that way.
The strange behaviour began after I installed the latest security and safari update via Software Update.
I tried resetting the pram, using the included install disk to check the HD with disc first aid with no results. Will I have to re-install the OS now?
    Mac Mini PowerPC g4 / 1.5ghz / 512 mb RAM
    Your collective help is appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The symptoms you describe and the circumstances in which it occurred are often indicative of a problem with prebinding, and can be caused for example by running the system on other tasks while also applying updates. Prebinding is the process whereby MacOS links executables with their library files, and when it is damaged it can cause the system to become unresponsive or fail.
When you say that you used the install disk to check the HD 'with no results' I assume you mean that it found no problem. Given that you were able to boot the system with that disk, it demonstrates that the system is healthy, so at that point and assuming you did not get any errors when testing with Disk Utility, I would suggest you boot to the install disk again, and select the option to 'archive and install' (an option that is reached by clicking the button for a custom installation). Archive and Install will put a fresh copy of macOS on the drive, but leave your applications and files untouched. Once the new MacOS copy is installed, you can boot as normal and then I would urge you to download the 10.4.11 combo update from the Apple downloads page (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html) and install that, before running Software Update to grab any additional updates required.
Ensure you are not running any applications or performing any other tasks on the system when performing updates - particularly not when you see the system reporting 'Optimizing system' towards the end of an update. This is when the system is actually updating prebinding, and where running anything else can cause problems. This was a known issue and was resolved in MacOS 10.5.x by a different routine for updates.
As always when doing this kind of work, it is strongly advised that you ensure you have a good backup of all your data first.

  • G-tech G-drive mini external h.d. won't turn on

I have a new G-Tech G-Drive Mini (500 GB) external hard drive which was just fine the first time I had it connected to my iMac. I got it all set up, backed up some files, put it away and that was that.
Today I got it out, turned the power switch to ON but nothing happened. It won't turn ON. Connected to the computer by an 800-firewire or not, it won't turn ON. No green light, no nothing.
I realize this isn't a Mac question per se, but I bought it at an Apple Store (it's now past the return date) and it's the weekend and G-Tech is closed. And I am VERY frustrated.
    Any advice?

  • My mini won't turn on

I have had the thing for a few weeks. I never turn it off I always have it on, sleeping, waiting for me to get an idea and come over and use it to record. I have a usb mouse, keyboard usb and midi to usb, and a m-audio firewire interface powered through the firewire, connected into it.
I haven't turned it completely off for like 2 weeks probably. It just sleeps right. Never had a problem. Go to use it today, and it's off, and it won't turn on! called apple and they are sending me to the store, is still under warranty i didnt do anything stupid it did this when i wasnt there. No water or tampering no one was in the room or anything.
So what gives, did leaving it on for a long time burn something out, especially with the stuff plugged in? **** dude!
    Andrew

You didn't hurt anything by leaving it on.
Computers generally last longer when they are left on. But, that's an on-going debate.
Every electronic device has a max. number of hours that it will operate. So, naturally that number of hours will be reached faster if it is left on.
But, turning a device on and off causes stress on that device as well (the sudden surge of electricity when it is turned on). Like the light-bulb that blows when you turn it on.
So, either way it will die eventually.
But, it should last for many, many years either way. As the device gets older, it is more likely to fail being turned-on that it is if you leave it on. This is particularly true for hard drives that are many, many years old.
But, in your case, I think that the machine probably just had a defect in it. I would not be concerned at all that your leaving it on caused the problem.
I'm glad to hear that they are taking care of it for you.
