Mini Display - VGA connector for new thunderbolt port - is it works?

I am confused about absence of mini display port at a new macbooks - I need definetely to know, will thunderbolt port work with mini display-VGA connector?

Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort, so you can use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter with the Thunderbolt port without any problem.
Note that Thunderbolt is just Mini DisplayPort but with the ability to transfer data. Both of them use the same port

  • Using mini display - can I also use thunderbolt for HDD?

I have a mac mini 2011, and I use both the HDMI (to a 42 inches TV) and the mini display for my working monitor (mini display to DVI, using the thunderbolt output). Currently running on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (latest)
Can I use simultaneously the thunderbolt output for an external thunderbolt capable hard drive while the miniu display is used ? If so, do I need some sort of a ''Y'' connector or what ?
If not, my other solution could be that I also stream to my Apple TV ( so maybe there is some redundancy here... thus I would not need to use the HDMI output of the mac mini and could instead use it for my main monitor through the HDMI to DVI already provided?...)
    Thanks,
    Rob

There is no device such as a y-cable or signal splitter
for Thunderbolt.  The only way to connect multiple
devices is with devices that have a Thunderbolt
    passthrough connection.  Many Thunderbolt external
drives do have this capabiltity, but many don't.
You will need to make sure that the Thunderbolt
drive has a passthrough connection for daisy chaining.
Once you have such a drive, connect the drive to
the Mini via a Thunderbolt cable and then connect the
monitor to the passthrough connection on the drive in
the same manner as you currently connect the monitor
directly to the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

Any other suggestions or things I should know about apple products in Ireland.  I know there are no Apple stores there.
An adaptor doesn't burn out. It merely serves as a means to connect the power prongs on your device to the power supply.
I believe you are thinking of a transformer, which you do not need. A transformer converts one voltage to another.
You don't need to do that as the power supply of modern electronics can take almost any worldwide voltage.
Look at the label on the device. It should indicate the input power acceptable of 100-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz.
Additionally, I found the adapters cheaper in the UK than I found them in the US. They were available in most supermarket chains. I wasn't in Ireland, so I can't say one way or the other.
If you have something that doesn't have that input power spec, it would require a transformer.
On other items like electric clocks or things with motors, you can connect them up to a transformer and the voltage will be correct, but the frequency may not. For clocks, that will cause them to not keep time well. For motors, they will burn out.

  • Is the Mini DisplayPort the same as the Thunderbolt port?

I need to know, because I'd like to mirror my computer to my TV.

Niel's answer assumes you meant 'Thunderbolt" when you wrote "lightning bolt." I thought you were referring the the Lightning port on an iDevice. However, if you meant Thunderbolt, then it is the same as the Mini-DisplayPort's connector.

  • Mac Mini display randomly blanks for a few seconds....

The Mac Mini that I bought a few weeks ago randomly goes blank for a couple of seconds at a time (black screen). There is no regular interval between occurrences -- sometimes it can go an hour or more between "spasms," other times it may blank two or three times within a ten minute span. Occasionally, it comes back to a snowy screen, that lasts for another couple of seconds, before returning to normal.
I have searched online, and have seen this mentioned in reference to the nVidia 9400, which is the graphics adapter in this model Mac Mini. I have tried both the mini-DVI to DVI adapter, as well as the mini-display port to DVI adapter, as was suggested in one post. The occurrences are less frequent with the mini-display port to DVI adapter, but they still occur with an unacceptable frequency (if occurring at all is acceptable). I have also tried three different flat-panel monitors (Samsung, LG, and Acer), with the same results.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know of a solution, other than returning the computer?
    Thanks.

Yes. This is exactly the issue I'm having. I'm both sad, and happy I'm not alone!
I added this message in another post before I found this one.
"I'm using a 27 inch ASUS LCD over DVI from the Mac Mini. It doesn't matter if I use a mini display port to DVI adapter or an HDMI to DVI adapter, the screen will randomly "Flicker" the image into a reversed color image thats slid to one side a bit. Other times it will go black for half a second randomly. And then, after a group of close together "Flickers" it will on occasion go into the "Colored static" issue like you are experiencing.
I can either power cycle the monitor or the Mac to solve the issue. I assume this solves the issue because it forces the Mac to handshake with the DVI connection again, and temporarily resolves it. Some times it will only "Flicker" one or two times a day, other times it will do it in cascades until it goes into the "Colored noise" problem again, which I have only seen a half dozen times in the last few weeks.
The Mac Mini did not do this initially, so I'm thinking it's from one of the boot camp updates? I hope it is, because that means it can be fixed with a patch."
I'll drop apple some feedback. Thanks for the link!

  • Thunderbolt ports no longer working

My iMac 27" running Mountain Lion Thunderbolt ports are no longer working out of no where. I leave on a Friday, come back into the office on Monday and my second display, my Black Magic Monitor Card, all of my Thunderbolt drives no longer work with the iMac, but each device works fine with other Macs.
I've reset the PRAM and SMC over 5 time each, but to no avail.
    Mountain Lion 10.8.5
    Thunderbolt Firmware 23.10
No updates avail besides Mavericks (which I can't because of certain 3rd party plugins not supporting it yet)
Any idea of a solution besides Apple Store?

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter for new MacBook

    Hi,
I have an old MacBook (2 years old) and am planning to upgrade to the new MacBook.
Can my current Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter be used for this new MacBook as well?
This is so that I don't have to order another Adapter if they are the same still.
    Thanks!
    QF

A two-year old MacBook will have a Mini DVI port on it, not a Mini DisplayPort. So you will need a new adapter. Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter.

  • Mini-display == VGA

I was going to hop out and buy one of these new MacBook Pro's but unless I missed it, the Apple Store is not currently carrying any adapters for them (VGA, HDMI, or DVI). At work I use my MacBook exclusively with a 24" HP display with VGA. Any idea when these adapters will be available? Seems insane on Apple's part to switch to this new "industry standard" without the ability to actually use it with any existing displays....

Never mind. Must have missed it during my first perusal through the store:

apparently this is an issue with the database configuration and not log miner.  I ran the same test against the prodcution database and got both the DDL and DML.  I used exactly the same test script including the logminer "setup" , obviously changing the name of the log files and the name of a directory.

  • No item exists at ... It may have been deleted or renamed by another user for new items, but older items work?

I created a webpart page and added an SPD listformwebpart in display mode for a particular list.
All day yerterday I called the page and passed it the ?ID= query string and it worked great. It still works great for the items I had created.
This morning I added a workflow where I email the URL to the page with the ID dynamically on it. Any items I added today give me the error:
No item exists at ... It may have been deleted or renamed by another user
All items from yesterday work fine on that page with the exact url... ????
I was demoing the solution and was completely at a loss to explain this.
I checked and there is no Item security. I can pull up the suspect items using the native list Display page. I show up as the creator and last modifier My workflow is NOT making any changes to the list .. only sending a url to my page.
Same URL with only the ID different..Some items work.. some don't.. Any explanation for this?
UPDATE: I CREATED A BRAND NEW PAGE WITH NO CODE. JUST THE LISTFORMWEBPART AND THE PROBLEM PERSIST.

Not sure if you've seen it already, but here's a step by step guide from Microsoft's help site on creating a custom form.
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint-designer-help/create-a-custom-list-form-HA010119111.aspx
The location of the custom form is really irrelevant. As I said, you don't apply security to the forms. They're applied to the list/library level or at the individual items.
Also, SharePoint 2007 doesn't have column/field level security. Even if you customize your form or use javascript to make certain fields not-editable, it doesn't necessarily mean that's secured. Someone experienced with SharePoint can easily get around it.
Depending on your user base or sensitivity of your data, making individual fields not-editable may not be a big deal.
Anyways, take a look at the following article from Laura Rogers. This is one way you can make the form so that only certain fileds are editable.

  • No VGA out on new K9N2GM-FIH but HDMI works fine

    Hi,
I was hoping someone might help. I am getting no VGA out on my new K9N2GM-FIH motherboard. The board passes POST and the HDMI out works fine (was able to view Windows Vista on my TV). I was wondering if anyone had this issue or had any ideas how to fix it. It may be that it needs to be replaced.
    My setup is:
    K9N2GM-FIH
    AMD Kuma 7750 BE CPU
    300W Hipro PSU
    2x2GB 800 Mhz Patriot RAM
I know the power supply is small but I'm only running onboard graphics. I've already tried a different brand of RAM.
    Thanks in advance.

Can anyone think of any other possibilities as to why this might be happening. I'd hate to exchange it only to have the same thing happen again.
It could just be a broken VGA port, in which case you have no option but to get the board replaced. I presume you have already tried the basics such as a different cable and a different monitor.
