Mini-DisplayPort Extension Cables

Many, like me, discovered the cabling on the back of the 24" LCD Cinema Display is no where near long enough to reach a Mac Pro positioned underneath the desk. Not to fear ... you can get Mini-DisplayPort cables from both DataPro and Dr. Bott. I picked up one of each and they both work beautifully: http://tinyurl.com/l8w93o, http://tinyurl.com/ktburz

  • Mini-DVI extension cable?

Has there ever been such a thing as a mini-DVI extension cable?
I use an external monitor with my MacBook, so I have to use the mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The problem is that I now have this big bulky VGA connector sitting on my desk just to the left of my MacBook.
I figured that I would simply go buy a mini-DVI extension cable that would allow me to get the VGA connectors off of my desk. However, I have searched all over the Internet and found that such a cable does not exist.
The only thing that comes close is a 1.8 meter Male-to-Male mini-DVI cable available from shentec.com (http://www.shentech.com/apmitomimato.html). But of course I need a Male-to-Female cable.
Since the mini-DVI connector is primarily only used by Apple, it would be nice if Apple would build and sell mini-DVI extension cables in 2 or 3 varying lengths.

    Dang...
I tried to see if CablesToGo could make a mini-DVI extension cable and this was their reply:
{quote} +"Unfortunately we cannot build a cable like that. It is an Apple proprietary connection that we cannot obtain.+
    +We apologize for any inconvenience. "+{quote}
I'll have to try some other companies...maybe newertech.com and Dynex. Anyone know of other companies that could make this cable?

  • Mini Displayport/HDMI cable & Audio Y cable to Vizio. No sound!

    13-inch MacBook Pro, mid-2009
    Vizio E320i-A0
I connected a mini displayport/HDMI cable and a audio Y cable (Dynex 3.5mm RCA) from my MacBook Pro to my Vizio TV and I can't get any sound through the TV; however, I do get a picture.  Called Vizio and, of course, they say there are no audio settings that need to be changed on the TV.  Reviewed other discussions about this topic and tried changing the Audio MIDI Setup, but I don't get the same options. Do I have the wrong cables?

I fixed it by going into system prefs -> sound -> output and selecting the TV as the output
Make sure your TV is connected when doing this
TV is not one of the options when I follow those directions.  My only option is "Internal Speakers" and my Airport Express.  I think those directions work for you because you have a later model Mac... but thank you for your help. :-)

  • Mac is not connecting to TV after using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable?

Macbook Pro is not connecting to TV after using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable. 2010 Macbook Pro, just purchased Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable from Amazon. Link here: http://www.amazon.com/Mini_Dis-HDMI-CB6-Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter-Cable/dp/B003OC 6LWM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1406238976&sr=8-2&keywords=mac+to+tv --When i connect both ends of the cable to the TV and to the laptop, the screen will blink, but then afterwards it will not mirror on the TV. I have tried going to display setting but cannot find the arrangements tab. When i searched "arrangements" a message said, "The Arrangement tab of Displays preferences is hidden because you only have a single display attached to this computer." Not sure how to fix this problem. I have connected this laptop to a TV before, but with a different cable other than the one i just purchased. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Found the fix.  Still don't know if it was Windows, iTunes, or Norton 360, but this worked immediately for me:

I found a solution posted from Rodfromnework for PC users. It worked for me and easy to do.
Start --> Programs --> Accessories (Right Click on Command Prompt) --> Run as Administrator
    then type in:
    Netsh winsock reset
Hit enter, restart PC, open iTunes, go to Store
Hope it works for you too.

  • Use Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter to connect Mac Mini to Cinema Display?

    Hi
I have a new-to-me current model Mac Mini and want to use it with my 20" Cinema Display (model A1081).
The Mac Mini instructions say to use the HDMI port on the Mac Mini with a DVI>HDMI adapter cable. I seem to have only a DVI>Mini DisplayPort adapter cable. I'm guessing this will be OK to use, but don't want to fry the system straight out the box
Can anyone confirm it's OK to use DVI>Mini DisplayPort connection to drive the display?
    TIA
    Jim

    Thanks for the reassurance BSteely!
One thing I've seen when rummaging through the forum is a suggestion that with MDP>DVI adapter is problems with display waking from sleep. Short of setting it not to sleep, is there a workaround to wake it up again if it doesn't respond to usual stimuli?
    TIA
    Jim

  • MBPro w/Mini DisplayPort to Cinema Display w/only USB and Firewire ports?

I've searched the threads for something that will explain what kind of cable I need to use my Cinema Display with my MacBook Pro, and I'm not finding anything. The MacBook Pro has the Mini DisplayPort for video out, and the Cinema Display's only ports are two USB and two FireWire.
All of the video cables I've seen in the online Apple store are either Mini DisplayPort to DVI or Mini DisplayPort to VGA, neither of which would work. Tech support told me that the computer and the display are compatible -- can anyone tell me which cable I need?

I have been using the display for several years, connected to my G4 PPC Mac Pro. Now that I have a new MacBook Pro, I was thinking of getting rid of the tower and simply using the laptop.
The cord coming out of the back of the display is connected to the tower with both the DVI plug and two USB plugs. It didn't occur to me to look on that cord because my understanding was that there was a port on the display itself, and I always think of that cord as simply a power cord.
I understand getting a DVI-to-Mini DisplayPort converter cable, but the Cinema Display is apparently powered by the Mac Pro tower. Would a laptop be able to power the Cinema Display? And would I have to connect both USB plugs to the laptop? That would take up both of the MacBook Pro's USB ports.

  • MBP 2009: Audio over Mini DisplayPort

    Hello
    I previously ordered a Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI cable (http://www.amazon.co.uk/1-8m-DisplayPort-Adapter-Unibody-MacBook/dp/B003WVC8R2/r ef=sr1_fkmr01?ie=UTF8&m=A1T39SA8AUFT6J&qid=1289477962&sr=1-1-fkmr0).
It's been working great with my 2009 model MacBook Pro, however I have to use a separate cable for audio.
When in the Apple Store recently to fix a battery problem on that laptop, I got into a discussion about audio through HDMI on this model. According to the Mac Genius audio through Mini DisplayPort was enabled on older devices through a firmware update (and he said his Mac Mini now uses one cable to do audio and video).
Audio is not working with the cable above - but was I incorrectly informed by Mac Genius, or do I need a different cable that does support audio?
    Thanks
    Jamie

All we know about your MacBook Pro model is that you've identified it as a "2009 model MacBook Pro." Apple introduced audio-out via mini-displayport in the April 2010 MBP models, so if yours was bought before then, it didn't have that capability when it was new. To the best of my knowledge and belief, nothing that has happened or been released since then has changed that.
[This article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241], updated in June 2010 (after the release of the latest mac Mini), lists the Mac models that supported audio via mini-Displayport at that time:
"iMac (Late 2009), MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), MacBook (Mid 2010), and Mac mini (Mid 2010) supply multichannel audio (up to 8 channels) and video signals over Mini DisplayPort."
I haven't heard of any update that has changed that list since then. If it were possible to enable audio output by means of a firmware update, I think Apple would have made that update available to all owners of mini-Displayport-equipped Macs, not just some of them.

  • Tecra A11 - No Video via mini DisplayPort

    Hi There,
I just recently purchased a mini DisplayPort -> HDMI cable to be used with my Tecra A11 Notebook. My intention was to run two external displays by running a VGA cable to my LG W2242 Monitor and run the mini-DP to HDMI cable to my HP 2509m Monitor. Unfortunately I cannot get my HP monitor to recognize the Video Signal from the mini DIsplayPort.
I have downloaded the newest drivers for my laptop, but still no luck. Is there anything special I need to do to get the mini DisplayPort to send a Video Signal?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Landon

The Tecra A11 I have purchased (the A11-00N) only has two external video ports; A mini DisplayPort and a VGA.
I am currently running the Tecra A11 hooked up via the VGA Port to my HP 2509m Monitor. When unplugging the VGA cable and attempting to use just the mini DisplayPort to attach a SINGLE external Monitor I still have trouble getting a signal.
@Andrej - I'm currently attempting to attach 2 external monitors while closing the lid of the built-in display. In any case this should work as the laptop would still be only running 2 displays total.
What troubles me is that the mini DisplayPort doesn't work in a single display setup. I am going to attempt using the cable with a MacBook Pro later today and hopefully it will help in pointing to the root of the problem.

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter w/ extension cable

I would like to get a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my macbook. Does anyone know how it would would if I used it with a VGA extension cable. Any experience will be helpful

Depends on how long the cable is, and if it was of sufficient quality for computer use. The higher resolutions require better quality and shorter cables. You may get some signal loss for long cables. A standard monitor cable that comes with a computer monitor should be fine, but what kind of length extension cable are you talking about?

  • I have just tried to connect my Mac book pro to an LG Plasma TV via an iWires Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. All I get on my TV is the Mac wallpaper and nothing else. I am missing something really silly, could anyone help please.

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

  • Mini displayport to HDMI adapter? or cable?

which would be a better connection for macbook pro to HDTV, a mini displayport to HDMI adapter with cable? or a mini displayport to HDMI cable??

I would opt for a single cable such as this eliminating the adapter.  The less connections, the better:

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA cable, when available?

With this new MacBook aluminum, the I/Os are changed a little bit. The Mini DisplayPort in particular, it is said to be perfect to connect to Apple LED Cinema Display, but what if I want to connect any regular projector in order to do presentations? or any other monitors? I have searched here in China for Mini DisplayPort to VGA cable, but with no luck, then I googled it, seems it is not available in the market yet? Keynote is so good that makes me irresistible to do a presentation with my Mac.
So my question is: where can I get a cable like this? and how much would that be?

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
it's avaiable in the US Apple Online Store http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MjkyNjI0MA
Not sure how to get it to china though.

  • Apple mini displayport to vga cable. ...doesn't work. help.

Tried hooking up my mac mini using the apple mini displayport to vga cable to my 22" acer monitor but im getting nothing. At the same time I hooked my tv to the hdmi connection and could see in the display settings on the mini that a dialogue box for the settings for the acer had appeared but no signal on the monitor itself.....any ideas?

    Try resetting the PRAM.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
