Hi, I recently "converted" from a Dell laptop running Windows Vista to a shiny new Aluminium 13" MacBook. In general I have been very pleased with the experience and really love OSX and the MacBook. The one disappointment is that I cannot now attach my laptop to my Sony TV via HDMI which I was able to do with the Dell and Windows. I cannot find any Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cables. There are some suggestion on the internet that I could use a Mini-DP to DVI cable and then another DVI to HDMI cable to plug into the TV, but this seem a poor option as DVI does not carry sound. The thing I really don’t understand is why the latest and greatest laptops available don’t have an easy option to connect them to the de-facto standard input on all new HD TV’s, which is HDMI?

Hi there! I'm having some issues connecting my mid 2010 Macbook pro to my 32" Toshiba LED TV.
I'm running OS X Version 10.8.2 , as mentioned before, on the mid 2010 Macbook pro.
The issue which I have, is that when I connect my Hdmi cable to my minidisplay port through the adapter, I keep getting a blue screen popping up.
I am using a Startech MiniDisplay to HDMI Adapter Converter and ION 6FT Flat HDMI CABLE.

I had issues with getting my MBP to work with my Vizio XVT323SV via the RGB port. What worked for me was downloading SwitchResX (http://www.madrau.com/indexSRX4.html) and setting up a custom 1920x1080 resolution using the values found in the Vizio user guide. Works like a champ now. Best shareware investment I ever made. Now I can watch my EyeTV recordings at full HD resolution.

Sidebar: I also bought the Griffin mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable, but I can't get any signal at all via that connection. The Mac doesn't see the TV and the TV doesn't see a signal. Very frustrating. My RGB connection is good enough but I bet HDMI would be even better.

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

I have a macbook pro 13 inch running on mavericks 10.9.2 and i was wondering if i could just use the "Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter" and connect it directly from my computer to my t.v? because i see a lot of people on youtube connecting the "hdmi adapter" to the computer first, then connecting a regular HDMI cord to the adapter, then lastly to the t.v........ Does it make a difference whether or not I connect a "HDMI Display Port" directly from the computer to the t.v without using a adapter to connect with a regular hdmi cord??? what is the adapter really for anyways???

without knowing precisely which computers the people on YouTube are using, it’s hard to say whether they’re taking unnecessary steps or not. You should be able to connect the Mini DisplayPort side of a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to your Thunderbolt port, and connect the HDMI side of the adapter to your TV’s HDMI port.

You are right: Thunderbolt supports both Mini DisplayPort cables and adapters without any problem, but Mini DisplayPort does not support Thunderbolt cables.
If you have got an Apple display with Mini DisplayPort, you can use it with the new Mac Pro. Just use the Mini DisplayPort cable or adapter you need. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5219?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#22

You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.

Connecting my macbook pro 13" to Sony bravia via mini Displayport to HDMI

yesterday I bought a new LCD TV Sony Bravia KDL-32EX600 (Full-HD LED) that has 4 x HDMI inputs.
I also bought a mini Displayport to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI cable.
When I connect it to my computer, the screen goes blue for a second and it doesn't recognise any additional displays. There's also no video or sound in the TV, on the right HDMI channel. (I've tried every HDMI input and every channel)
I've tested the TV with another laptop that has straight HDMI output from the gfx card and it works perfectly.
I have up-to-date MacOS and I also upgraded my TV's firmware to the latest.
I thought that maybe the miniDisplayport to HDMI connector is broken but why does the computer try to do something when I turn on the correct channel on the TV?
I'm out of ideas..

I know it's a month on from your post, but I thought I'd add that I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm trying to connect my new MacBook Pro (15" core i7) to my Sony Bravia KDL-40EX600 using a mini displayport to HDMI adapter. When I plug the cable in, the MBP screen goes blue for one second then goes back to normal, but the system just doesn't detect the external display.
I've tried the MBP on other monitors and it works fine, so there is nothing wrong with the adapter or cable.
I've also tried plugging two other Macs into the TV (a 2008 15" MacBook Pro and a 2008 MacBook) and the TV works great with both of them.
So, it seems there's something specific to the new MacBook Pros that makes them incompatible with the Sony EX600 TVs.
I just talked to AppleCare about it and after trying a few things (resetting the PRAM, etc.) I was simply told that there's nothing wrong at all with the Mac and that this is simply a "compatibility" issue that I have to put up with. So, it looks like we're out of luck until (hopefully) a new Mac OS update fixes the issue.

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter by Belkin for iMac 2009 failed to work

This is an SOS message. I have purchased another Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter and I have iMac (27-inc, Late 2009) running OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10.1). I have carried out the connection of Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to LG Plasma TV Screen, but there is no sign of any of the equipment reading or aware of the connection. Is there anybody out there who can help me make it work? Also, why is that Yosemite - System Preference, click on Displays does not contain - Arrangement? I'll greatly appreciate any useful tips from the community or apple support team.

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter when connected to the external Plasma TV screen, nothing happens. The System Preferences was accessed -and the Displays monitor sign was clicked, but it only showed - Display/Colour, which according to the instructions / descriptions contain in the - Video Troubleshooting Internal and External Monitors literatures and video, there seems to be missing - Arrangement / or AirPlay from my OS X Yosemite version.
The above is the version of OS X Yosemite - showing on my *iMac when clicked on System Preferences, and as result I have not been able to make the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter to LG Plasma TV Screen to work.

When the above image is compared with the following image below, there is definitely something missing and it’s probably affecting the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter to work in my connection.
Questions:
How can I make my iMac 10,1 (27-in, late 2009, currently running OS X Yosemite 10.10.1) to have the above AirPlay mirroring or Arrangement to activate the connection?
Are there other ways I can make the connection to work?
Is there any body who has a similar iMac specs and OS X Yosemite who has overcome connecting to external Plasma TV Screen?

Mini Displayport to HDMI Adapter - Sound?

I have hooked up my mini by the Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to my Philips FlatTV. Sound is only played by the internal mini speaker, not from TV.
According Apple Support the sound should be working on the TV when using the adapter. They reckon my adapter is broken.
I know that there is no sound from the Minidvi to HDMI adapter unless you use external audio cable, but with the Mini Displayport?
Has anyone actually managed to make this work?

As already pointed out in this thread, Apple currently do not support routing audio out via the Mini Displayport connector even though the Displayport specifications allow for this. Therefore a 'standard' Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter will not be able to provide audio since the Mac will not be sending it.
However many people have been disappointed with Apple's omission and as a result at least one manufacturer of adapters has developed a solution to workaround this.
If you look at http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=5311&seq=1&format=2 you will see the 'standard' style Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter which due to Apple, does not currently provide audio. If you however look at this model http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=6331&seq=1&format=2 then it gets round the problem by connecting to both the Mini Displayport on a Mac and the Mac's Mini TOS-Link digital output and then 'merges' them together before sending them out via a single HDMI cable. This would therefore provide audio to your TV.

Ok I was told by someone at the Apple Store durring my one to one secession that I could get a mini to HDMI cable and the video and audio from my laptop would be displayed on the TV.

Apparently it's the current range of MBP's that's the issue. In theory, the displayport standard supports audio.

I believe the 2010 and newer ones support audio through the HDMI cable. Earlier MBPs will require one to tap the audio output port and run separate wires to the RCA audio input connectors on the TV. Also you might check your Sony user manual to make certain that you have it set up correctly as well as the MBP.

When I plug in the adapter (with or without a hdmi cable attatched to it) to my macbook, the screen blinks and then goes back to normal. When everything is properly connected the tv shows no input signal (I am on the correct input channel) and the screen doesnt appear in the displayas settings in my macbook pro. I tried to reboot the macbook, shut down and turn on the screen and nothing seemed to work. The detect display option in the system preferences didnt help. I appreciate any help I can get.

Macbook Pro Mini Displayport to HDMI problem Please Help!

Most things seem to have a slight blur as if there is a screen zoom happening just slightly. My old setup was a late 2007 Macbook Pro 15" 10.6.3 connected to the same monitor I have now via Dual-Link DVI and it was crystal clear... It's hard to believe that the issue lies with Samsung, I've tried the same setup on my Sony Bravia in the living room, being that it's a much larger tv...I can't notice the artifacts as much but they are still present. Something is off.
My only other option I feel is to try a Mini Displayport to Dual-Link DVI but I chose the HDMI route for it's standardization and when I go to meetings/projections it's convenient to have one cable. Yes, I've checked cables, restarted everything ect... Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

Bought mini displayport to HDMI cable to connect new imac (21.5" i3) to tv (SONY bravia). It says it is audio compatable but its not sending audio, video works fine though. Any ideas?

Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Trouble

Hello. So, I've had a MacBook Pro 13" for a while (maybe 3 years?) and have used mini displayport to DVI connections before (to school Smart boards, etc.), with no trouble. I'm running OS X 10.6.8. I've been recently wanting to connect my laptop with my HDTV so I can watch movies and just have a bigger screen for gaming and such. I went and bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and used my already owned HDMI cable (which works perfectly fine with my PS3), but when I tried to hook up my computer to the TV, my computer flashed a blue screen for maybe a second, then went back to the normal screen without displaying on the TV. The computer doesn't recognize the external device, and will not allow me to detect the TV manually. I'm not sure what the issue is, as I've had no previous problems connecting my laptop with other TVs. I tried connecting to my mom's 2012 model MacBook Air as well, and the same thing happened.

Make sure that the external device (TV in this case) is set to HDMI input. Some devices (like a Hitachi TV I have) do not "talk back" on the HDMI interface otherwise, and the Mac times out while trying to negotiate how to talk to it. Full-digital HDMI is far more complex than your old VGA analog output....
