Mini Displayport to S-Video using two joined DVI adaptors?

I have a 13" MacBook with the mini displayport. I am attempting to connect it to an external display (Samsung plasma monitor). I have connected two adaptors together: (minidisplay--DVI) + (DVI--Video), and have tried running both video and S-video cables from that into my Samsung, without success.
The MacBook does not seem to recognize that anything is connected to the mini displayport; the MacBook screen goes blue very briefly when I plug or unplug, but other than that there is no indication. I have tried powering off, sleeping/waking, and plugging/unplugging on both ends. I know the video input port on the Samsung is good (I believe the S-video port is good but can't prove it), and I know the video cable is good.
Has anyone had success with this setup? Does joining the two adaptors (both purchased from Apple) create a problem? Or is it set up correctly and an indication that one or both of the adaptors is malfunctioning? Any suggestions appreciated.
(Note: yes, there is a VGA port on the Samsung, but it's wall mounted and virtually inaccessible. I am using video inputs on side of device).

With the advent of the Aluminum MacBook, Apple stopped supporting video and S-video out. You will either need to use VGA or else something like this:

  • MBP Unibody and Mini DisplayPort to S-video adapter

Why is the Mini DisplayPort-to-s-Video Adapter the only adapter that Apple can't seem to make? My late model PowerBook G4 came with its own S-Video out, which was perfect for running video to the dual overhead projectors in my Sunday School class. But alas, the PowerBook couldn't keep up with the multimedia video requirements I made for it, so I upgraded to the MacBook Pro (mid 2009). But I can't find a friggin' adapter to save my life! I've tried an external VGA unit, only to have the video rolls all over the screen with no way to stop it. All I need is one simple adapter: a Mini DisplayPort to S-Video /Composite adapter. Apple makes almost the exact same adapter, but it's for the mini-DVI out. At least the PowerBook had a full-size DVI out- all the MBP has is the single, stupid Mini DisplayPort. Why can't the fine folks at Apple make up their stupid minds which ports they're going to use?

This is why I think that won't work. I might be wrong tho.
Once you head on over to VGA from the Mini DisplayPort, you are then talking about an ANALOG signal. This analog signal must be changed BACK to digital in order to work with S video. So, what you need is a VGA to S video converter box. They are a lil too pricey for me, around $100 I think.
What I was thinking was this. Since Mini DisplayPort and S video are both digital signals, you need to have digital all the way. I wonder if the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter shown here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A
would work when connected to the DVI to Video Adapter shown here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MTA4NDU1Mjc
At that point you would need an S video cable connected to the second adapter...but if the first adapter is in fact transmitting a digital signal, the second adapter should then just pass through that digital signal to the S video cable.
    Has anyone tried this?

  • Mini DisplayPort to Component Video, is This Possible?

    Hi,
    I have a 2010 model 15" MacBook Pro i5.
I am currently using a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, this video converter (http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-VGA2TV-Computer-Presentation-Converter/dp/B000X3 FAJU/ref=accglance_MI_ai_purchase_similarities_t5), and a standard RCA video cable to connect it to my TV.
My TV also has component video (YPbPr) inputs. Is it possible to output video using the MDP-to-VGA adapter and a cable like this one?: http://www.amazon.com/VGA-Component-High-Resolution-Cable/dp/B000YI24J8/ref=sr18?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1255662264&sr=8-8
Anyone have any experience with MDP-to-component and can tell me what would be needed to achieve this connection?
    Thanks.

I don't believe the adapter you're asking about will work. You need a converter box:

  • Mini DisplayPort to S-Video , any possibility ?

    Hello Guys !
Just bought my new alluminium macbook ( my first one ) and I am completely fascinated by it, Windows never ever again !
One little question, how to I manage to use my regular TV for watching movies / connect my macbook to it ?? Just have been in Apple Store and they told me there is no adapter available yet and they are not sure if there will be one. Anyone an idea if it works to use a normal Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and then a VGA to S-Video one ??
    Thanks for the help !
    greetings from brunswick
    chris

I'm banging my head on the wall here. Only a few months ago I bought the Canopus ADVC 55 for video capture. I decided against the ADVC 110 because the only difference seemed to be that the 110 included analogue video out, which I didn't need because I had the various adaptors for the MacBook to output to VGA, S-video/composite and DVI.
I've just bought the MacBook Pro because the new MacBook doesn't have Firewire, only to find now that I cannot output S-video at all!
Oh well, at least my main requirement is video capture or I'd be having to replace the 55 with the 110 already.

  • Mini DisplayPort to S-Video or RCA (yellow)

I know this has been addressed in other topics by other people, but I was wondering what the final outcome of all the discussion was. Is it possible to connect my MacBook Pro 13-inch with Mini DisplayPort to female S-Video or RCA (composite--yellow color). I can already connect the audio with no problem. I just need the video connection to be made.
    Sincerely,
    markerline

It can be done but you need a converter box like this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2
And you'll also need the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter if you don't already have one.

  • Is there a way to go from the mini displayport to a video .

I would like to be able to hook my new MacBook Pro up to the older tv's at school.
Is there an adapter or series of adapters that will create a connection between the mini displayport and a RCA video connection.

Yes, though the image quality will be dramatically inferior to what you see on the built-in MBP screen. You'll need a mini-Displayport-to-VGA adapter and this or a similar converter box:

  • Mini Displayport to S-video?

My intentions is to make my macbook to show things on my very old TV.
    The solution I had in mind is;

    and
    http://store.apple.com/se/product/M9267G/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MjI0MDAwMg
Have someone tried this with the alu edition? Does it work?

You can get a cheap HDMI adaptor:
    http://www.amazon.com/PTC-Premium-DisplayPort-Adapter-cable/dp/B0021YDRUI
I'm not an expert on the subject, but I think the reason apple doesn't support S-video is that it's analog and the display port technology is purely digital (though I don't understand why it does support a VGA adaptor). I imagine space/price constraints are what lead to the decision. I don't like it either, but I imagine with the digital conversion of TVs, it won't be that big a deal in a couple years (just as to conversion to USB and no floppy drive took a few years before it was painless).

  • How can I set up a second monitor using the DVI, a mini Displayport to dvi?

    Hey guys,
In my office I'm trying to set up a mac with two displays, Samsung screensync sa450s, using a Startech MDP2DVIW mini displayport to dvi, and the DVI port found on the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
However, whichever monitor is plugged in through the mini displayport never shows video, and instead will just flicker sometimes, no matter which monitor I use, or which of the mini displayports i use. The system profiler recognizes both monitors, and has all of the specs on both monitors, but only the monitor connected directly to the DVI displays anything, even if it is the secondary monitor.
The StarTech does still work with the macpro that used to be in this spot, and the only salient distinction I can find is that the old computer has Mountain Lion, while the new one is still running Snow Leopard. Is this a case where we should just update the OS? or is there another fix?
I've also read online that many people have been not fully plugging in these mini displayports, so I'm worried that I'm doing that, but then I'd figure it wouldn't have worked when I plugged it into the old computer unless my predecessor had made some hardware adjustments.
    Let me know.

A frequent solution to problems like the one you describe involves pushing in the Mini DisplayPort cable-end.
It should be inserted until essentially ALL of the metal end disappears inside the jack on the 5770 board.
Is this display wider than 1920 wide?
EDIT:  The Startech MDP2DVIW adapter you cited is a passive adapter suitable for 1920 wide or less. You should be using ACTIVE adapters, about US$35. They cost a little more, but are much more trouble-free. The ACTIVE designation means they contain booster circuitry to raise the Voltage levels up to true DVI levels. The default converter produces good timing, but the signals are really low.

  • My VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA doesn't work.

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA doesn't work. When I was using Mountain Lion, as soon as you plugged in the Mini adaopter into the mini display port, the screen would shrink and format to where it would project via a RGB cable to a projector. No such luck since Mavericks! Also, I had a lot of trouble with the DVD player when I tried to play a DVD and project it via a projector. It all worked seamlessly with Mountain Lion. Can anyone help me?

I think if you go to System Preferences >> Displays and Option-click on the "Scaled" radio button, it will show you all of the resolutions that you would have had before under Mountain Lion. I just upgraded to Maverick and my resolution preferences (mirrored on a TV using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, using 1280x768) were completely reset (my display was no longer mirrored, and the resolution on my main iMac screen became 2560x1440). I found my answer here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23599645#23599645. Hope that helps.

If your iMac has mini display port and/or thunderbolt no reason it shouldn't work.

  • Any Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with audio for macbook pro mid 2009

connecting MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) to Hisense TV with audio?!?!!?
    hello everyone.
if anyone is familar with successfully getting the older macbook pros that dont support audio out to stream and preform digital audio on a TV or has any helpful information that will get me familiar with trying to successfully stream audio and visual. and can PLEASE HELP ME in any way to understand what they know and teach me how to solve my problem id really appreciate it.
i want to connect my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) to my Hisense LED LCD TV, ModelNumber:40H3E  and getting digital audio sound from my TV as well as video, but have no clue on how or where to even start to successfully pairing the two and getting sound.
I own a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) this MacBook model doesnt support an HDMI port. My MacBooks model has the Mini Displayport which supports video out but does not support audio out. Can someone help me by telling me exactly which Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter with audio will support my model MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and exactly what HDMI wire do i need to buy that will successfully preform digital audio and sadisfying quality visual through TV?
i have NO expierence with the proccess have NO knowledge about any of this or these Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters with audio. i have no idea what kind of adapter and HDMI cord to buy that will give me sound from my tv for my type of macbook. '
im not familar AT ALL with any of this so i hope me giving you my MacBook Pros make and model and my TV's model number will be enough information for someone to help me.
just please give me anything you can on this topic
    thank you so much,

With a 2009 MacBook Pro, you need to use two connections to your TV: one for video and another one for audio.  The miniDisplayPort on the 2009 models does not support audio, so you need a separate audio cable:
miniDisplayPort adapter for video - I use the Apple miniDisplayport-DVI adapter + a DVI-HDMI cable like this one
audio cable for audio - use a 3.5mm male stereo-to-2xRCA male cable like this one
Connect the miniDisplayport adapter + DVI/HDMI cable to your MacBook Pro's miniDisplayPort output and the HDMI input on your TV
Connect the audio cable to your MacBook Pro's audio out and your TV's audio in
The only potential gotcha is if your Hisense TV requires audio via the HDMI cable when you use an HDMI cable.  The H3e user manual is unclear about this.

  • Mini Displayport - 2009 vs. 2013

I have a Mac Mini ("Early 2009") and according to its spec. it has a "Mini Displayport".  I have a MacBook Air ("Late 2010") and its spec. also indicates it has a "Mini Displayport".  However, these two are physically very different -- the MB Air's port is much smaller.
The MacBook Pro we just purchased has the same kind of port as the MB Air.
I'm trying to purchase an adapter that is: Mini Displayport (older/larger version)-Female to Mini Displayport (newer/smaller version)-Male, so that I can plug an older cable (one that plugged into the earlier model) into the new MBP.
Since both ports are referred to as "Mini Displayport" how would they be distinguised in specifying this kind of adapter?

If the Tech Specs for the late 2009 Mac Mini are to be believed, it has BOTH a Mini DisplayPort and a Mini DVI port output (a Mini DVI port is not very small).
    Graphics and video support
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display; up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    Mini-DVI port
DVI output using Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter (included)
VGA output using Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
    Mini DisplayPort output
You cannot use more than one adapter. If you want to use a DVI device, use a full-size cable -- the Mini DVI is not standard.
If you want to run a DVI device off a Mini DisplayPort, a cheap adapter will suffice for displays under 1920 wide. Wider displays are more complex.

  • Connect MacBook Pro with Mini DisplayPort to TV?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro with the Mini DisplayPort outlet. I used to have a PowerBook which I was able to connect to my TV via the video adapter. No such adapter is included with my MacBook. How can I connect it to my TV to view videos, movies, tv shows, etcetera?

You only need a cable from MBP to Display, i.e. Mini DisplayPort Male to HDMI Male Cable
    Link: http://www.cablematters.com/pc-30-30-gold-plated-mini-displayport-male-to-hdmi-m ale-6-feet-cable.aspx
    It's only $9.95.
But you know, until now Mini DisplayPort can not output audio but only video. As far as I know Cable Matters Inc. has solution for audio output. If you want high audio quality Mini Displayport Male and Toslink Audio/USB Male to HDMI Female Adapter is good for you since it supports 5.1 Channel audio.
    Link: http://www.cablematters.com/pc-56-26-mini-displayport-male-and-toslink-audiousb- male-to-hdmi-female-adapter.aspx
The price is $47.95, a little expensive. You will need another HDMI to HDMI cable from this adapter to the TV/Screen.
If you don't require high quality audio this is an alternative Mini DisplayPort Male and USB Male Audio to HDMI Female Adapter.
    Link: http://www.cablematters.com/pc-24-32-mini-displayport-male-and-usb-male-audio-to -hdmi-female-adapter.aspx
The price is cheaper for $37.49. You will also need an HDMI to HDMI cable from this adapter to your TV/Screen.

  • Mini DisplayPort to TV

Please provide the solution to connecting to a television, preferably through the common S-Video port. Also, list options for connecting via HDMI, component and other options.

Great, very cheap cables can be bought on Amazon.com. I connected my iMac to my HDTV and home theater as described below, but please note that the exact cables you will need depends on which Mac you have. Not all Macs have the same outputs, and you obviously have to have cables compatible with yours; the cables listed below might not work with your computer--so be careful! If you post details about your system, others can give you better advice specific to your computer.
I used the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (female) Cable for Apple Mac (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0025V2VO0/ref=cmcr_asinlnk) along with 25ft HDMI to HDMI Cable Premium Gold Series HDMI Certified (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EPRG6W/ref=cmcr_asinlnk) to connect my iMac to my HDTV. The picture is fantastic! Don't pay for overpriced cables--these work great!
Note that you have to have a separate audio connection, as the Mini DisplayPort is only video out, no audio. I used the Digital Optical Audio TosLink to Mini TosLink Cable, 12 FT (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ZTXBMO/ref=cmcr_asinlnk) along with RiteAV - Digital Optical Toslink Cable 25ft. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V06UHQ/ref=cmcr_asinlnk) and Optical Extension Coupler (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002MQGRC/ref=cmcr_asinlnk) to connect my iMac to my home theater. I bought all the cables and connector on Amazon for practically nothing compared to retail. It sounds fantastic--HUGE improvement over bluetooth or RCA connections. Don't waste money on expensive cables. The cheap ones carry the digital signal just as well.
Obviously, you might not need the extension cables and connector if you keep your computer close to your TV.
Others on these forums have recommended a cable from Kanex (http://kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495) which connects your audio into the HDMI cable along with the video so that a single HDMI connection delivers both audio and video to your TV. I haven't tried the Kanex cable; it costs more than the total of ALL the cables I listed above, but might be worth it if cable clutter is an issue. Again, make sure it will work with your specific Mac before you buy anything. In addition to being cheaper, another advantage of a separate audio connection is that I connect the audio directly to my home theater, not through the TV. This allows me to listen to iTunes without having to connect and use the TV; I don't know if the quality of a direct connection is better than that going through the TV first.
I have not tried other connection options (component, S-video), but HDMI is the preferred choice of most as it is full 1080p (highest resolution).
