Mini Displayport with 27" Imac

I've got a MBA and a 27"Imac that I have been trying to use as an external monitor.  When I plug in the mini displayport cable to the MBA the 27" Imac enters target display mode but the screen on the MBA alternates between a blue screen and the desktop.  Nothing is displayed on the Imac.  I have tried using the CMD-F2 actions but nothing will display the MBA desktop on the Imac.  Once the cable is unplugged from the MBA the screen stops blinking and the Imac exits target display mode.  Both macs are running the latest versions of OS X.   Any ideas on how to get this working?
Thanks
Rob

Is your MBA's firmware up to date?  This problem makes me think that you are missing a firmware update.  Another simple thing to check is to see if you've got mirroring turned on/off.  It does not matter which, as long as you know what mode your display is in.
Some people are talking about their successes in doing this on macrumors.com:

but it looks like they are using a video adapter of some kind.

  • Connecting a vga monitor to mini displayport with 2 adapters

Hi. I have a 21.5 inch iMac and I want to attach a second monitor. The monitor that I bought, the MultiSync LCD1560m, says it is mac compatible. it has two inputs; one DVI-D and one VGA. The monitor came with a vga cable, but not a DVI-D cable. I bought a dvi to mini displayport adapter, thinking the monitor would come with a DVI-D cable. I also had a VGA to DVI cable laying around, and attached that to the other adapter. The iMac won't detect the monitor. The chain from the iMac to the monitor is as follows: Mini DisplayPort > DVI > VGA. I don't want to shell out $40 for a new DVI-D cable. I've already rebooted multiple times plugging and unplugging the mnitor in before and after the iMac started up. I've also reset the PRAM. Does anybody have a solution that doesn't involve spending (much) money? (I'm broke. my monitor only cost $75). Thanks.

$40 for a DVI cable, where are you shopping Macy's?

I pretty sure even BestBuy has a DVI cable for under $20

  • Can I use ASUS VM60-G072R Desktop (like mini Mac) with my iMac all in one computer? I need to use Windows version of QB and I don't want to buy a PC tower or laptop.

I need to use the Windows version of Quickbooks Pro and I don't want to use Parallel or buy a PC tower or laptop. Can I use ASUS VM60-G072R Desktop (like Apple Mini) with my iMac all-in-one computer?

Thank you Kappy. I guess I have to decide to purchase a separate monitor and keyboard for this mini PC computer then. And also find extra space in my office. I'm happy you answered my question so quickly.

  • Connecting HDTV with mini displayport with HDMI cable dos'nt work

MacBook pro 15" mid 2010 when connected is nothing to see on HDTV. Could you give me some advice? thank you

Did you look at System Preferences>Displays?  Does the category 'Arrangement' appear?  Did you click on 'Detect Displays'?
Have you examined the instructions that came with your TV?  There should be settings for  an external PC/computer.
    Ciao.

  • HT4951 Can i use a Thunder bolt display with an iMac from the mid 2009 ? Would it work if connected to a mini dvi port in a scaled down mode or is it compulsory to have a thunder bolt port ?

I have a mid 2009 iMac that doesn't have Thunderbolt display, but has a mini-dvi port.
Will the Thunderbolt cinema display 27" still work when connected to this mini-dvi port ?
I thought it would be better going for a thunderbolt display monitor rather than the older version, so when i upgrade my machine in the future it stays compatible.

No.  A TB display can only be connected to a TB source.

As indicated in that artical a displayport device can be connected to a TB source.  But that is not your situation.

  • Audio and Mini DisplayPort on Late 2009 iMac (27")

I have a Late 2009  27" iMac and a 42" HDTV that I would love to hook up with eachother so I can start using Plex-and-the-likes on the bigger screen.
But I'm wondering if the Mini DisplayPort of this iMac supports audio, as I do not want my sound to come from the other side of the room when watching stuff on the TV.
I've been reading around on the net, but I can't seem to find anything conclusive that tells me that it works (some discussions and thread claim that it should work, but some official documentation regarding the Late 2009 and Mid 2010 iMacs (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3913) only mentions the Mid 2010 one with audio output in the Mini DisplayPort
Not sure if it matters, but I'm running a fully up-to-date OS X Lion.
    Thanks in advance.

According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241, your late 2009 iMac's displayport should support hdmi audio output, (but I have no idea whether there might be OS-X version limitations).
Here are two attractive alternatives to the spendy apple-referenced adapters. I can't vouch for them, but they have great user reviews, and very low-risk pricing.  (I just ordered one of each to try with my MBP and new HDTV -- but neither the adapters nor the TV have been delivered yet.)
    miniDP-to-hdmi adapter from monoprice.com @ $6.65
    miniDP-to-hdmi cable from amazon.com @ $8.67
Another interesting thought would be to skip the miniDP entirely and go with USB-to-hdmi, with an adapter that sounds almost too good to be true.  Any comments on this technology (displaylink) would be much appreciated:

  • USB Hub in Dell U3011 not working over Mini-DisplayPort(Thunderbolt) when it did with previous MBP

My previous MBP, a few years ago - the first generation with Thunderbolt - was able to generate a USB connection over Mini-DisplayPort with my Dell U3011. My late 2013 MBP is able to send display and audio, but seems unable to detect the USB hub in the monitor. I am on 10.9.4. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I turns out that the logic board of my MacBook Pro was faulty (despite being brand new).
I took it to the Apple Store, presented the problem, and one of the Tech's came to the same conclusion that I had -- hardware failure.  Phone support was no help in the matter (and even told me that what I was trying to do wasn't a supported option, which is rediculous).  However, the Genius Bar did take care of the problem, and my MacBook Pro was back to me with a replaced logic board within a few days.
    Hope that htis helps.

  • Mini DisplayPort adapter? Any Solutions?

What do I need to setup two devices as secondary monitors from the iMac? Least complicated solution for have both a preview monitor and projector (running the same image) from the MiniDisplay Port.
Thanks for any input. Some colleagues purchased a Mid 2010 21.5" iMac as a Media Shout solution. Our workflow/line of devices now is:
iMac > Apple MiniDisplay to DVI adapter > DVI cable > Kramer VP Scaler/Switcher (DVI input) > VGA cable (only output) > Kramer 1:3 VGA Distribution Amplifier > Cable run to projectors (LC-XGC500L).
Problem is no preview monitor. Hoping to have the preview monitor prior to the Kramer so if there is a need to setup a different program or slide, we will be able to see what we are doing on the monitor, while the Kramer is set to black.
Trying to troubleshoot. If I split the Mini DisplayPort at the iMac to the Kramer and preview monitor, must they both be at the same resolution and Hz? I can't get both the projectors and monitor except the signal at the same time.
    Again thanks for any input.

Called up AppleCare, they believe its a grounding issue. Naturally curious, and them having made it exceptionally easy to access, I opened up my notebook and found several issues with the placement of the motherboard. Firstly, some of the various spring-loaded grounding pins were unable to contact the bottom case. Also, the ground of the MiniDP was in direct contact with the upper case, rather than only touching its respective grounding spring. I suppose it must have been a problem with this running batch, but the problem was easily solved by loosening the motherboard, shifting its placement and closing it all up Another work-around I've found if nobody is so adventurous as to open up their case, just put the notebook to sleep, then plug in the adapter, then wake it back up :P

  • Target Display Mode - Thunderbolt to Mini DisplayPort?

I have a MacBook Pro which has a Mini DisplayPort and I connect this to the Mini DisplayPort on my 27" iMac and use Target Display Mode.
I am interested in the MacBook Air but there is no longer a Mini DisplayPort and I want to be able to go into Target Display Mode on my iMac. Is this going to be possible ie can I connect the Thunderbolt port on a MacBook Air to the Mini DisplayPort on my iMac and go into Target Display Mode? If possible, are the cables available yet?
    Thanks
    Tony

Yes, you can use the Thunderbolt port (which doubles as a Mini DisplayPort).
And yes, the cable (Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort) is available.
You can probably use your existing cable for Target Display Mode, just not for connecting Thunderbolt devices to your MacBook Air.

  • Can someone recommend a Mini Displayport Female to HDMI cord/adapter?

I would like to get an Apple 27" to use with my PC, which has both HDMI and DVI inputs. Thanks!

Please clearify which Apple 27" display you want to connect.  Is the the 2010 model which uses a mini-displayport.  Or is it the current thunderbolt model.
If it's the TB model you're out of luck.  You cannot connect a TB device to anything other that TB.
    Confusing Mini DisplayPort with Thunderbolt
I generally recommend monoprice.com for cables and components.  But a female mini-displayport adaptor to hdmi may be a problem to find.
Note, for DVI, if you want to use a 27" to it's full resolution you need dual-link DVI if you decide to use a DVI port.  Also DVI does not pass audio.

  • Mini Displayport, Audio and Snow Leopard

    Hello everybody!
It is my first post here, so excuse me if I'm in the wrong section (and by the way, sorry for my skill in english).
I'd like to know if audio is now supported in the mini displayport with Snow Leopard?
    Thanks,
    Julien

I did see this, however, with a Google search.
    http://www.macyourself.com/2009/07/10/kanex-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-adapter-wit h-audio-in-august/
Apparently, this product will combine the video output from the Mini DisplayPort with audio output over USB into a consolidated signal over HDMI. Pretty cool.

  • Connect 24" Cinema Display with Mini DisplayPort to new 21.5' iMac

I'm having a bit of an issue attempting to connect my new 21.5' iMac to my Apple Cinema Display. The display has a mini DV port that used to connect into my MacBook Pro but now I see there is no such port on the iMac.  They clearly state they offer support for it but I don't see a way to connect. Any suggestions?

    http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    19. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 14), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.

  • There is a lot of talk aout there about using a 27" iMac as a display with the mini displayport to displayport cable. It is so exciting! I am trying to connect a PC laptop with a VGA port to a 27" Dell Latitude D620?

In 2010 there was a question about using a 27" iMac as a display with a Dell laptop.
I am trying to connect a work Dell laptop Running Windows XP via a VGA cable to my personal iMac 27"
    running iMac 27", Mac OS X (10.6)
Has anyone tried this or know if imac 27" Mini port with a VGA adapter can work?
I apologize if I missed this discussion already
    Kind Regards
    Gilly

    Hi Gilly,
I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.
