Mini DV cassettes

I have two little MiniDV cassettes that I want to transfer on to DVD's. I do not have a camcorder/camera to do this with, just the little mini cassettes. Is there something I can buy to put these cassettes in, thru our tv, and make DVD's? Someone told me there is something about the size of the old VHS tapes, that you can put various sized cassettes in and make copies onto DVD's. I just need to know what this particular piece of equipment is called.

Without actually getting a MiniDV camcorder, and uploading your footage into a computer, there really isn't an affordable way to get your videos onto DVD's yourself. You could look at our iMemories service, and they should be able to copy your video footage onto DVDs for you.

Archiving VHS to mini-dv cassettes?

I recently purchased the Sony DCR HC 48 Handycam, however after scouring the discussion boards, I learned, much to my surprise given the HC model's track record, that I will NOT be able to transfer VHS footage digitally using this camcorder as a pass through. This is definitely a problem for me, as I was hoping to archive many VHS tapes to mini-dv. The emphasis is to archive to mini-dv cassette as opposed to importing all vhs footage directly into iMovie, which could ultimately tie up my internal hard drive (I would like to go through the tapes and edit them at a later date).
If I buy an analog to digital converter, do you know if I can somehow transfer the vhs to a mini-dv cassette with this approach? Again, I would prefer not to directly copy footage into the computer. What about investing in a vcr/mini-dv unit such as the one linked below? It appears as though they are no longer manufacturing these but, given my situation, and the number of tapes I am hoping to archive (and eventually edit), it may be a wise purchase. Your thoughts?

No reason at all to use iMovie, unless you are going to finish the job in iMovie.
The simplest way is to go from your VHS machine, through your converter (your DV camera) and into FCP. Because VHS does not have any time code, you will have to change your DEVICE CONTROL PRESET in FCP to NON CONTROLLABLE.
The only issue with this method is that, should the need ever arise, you will not be able to recapture footage from those tapes in a way that relates to your FCP sequence.... again, because VHS has no TC.
So, if the ability to recapture is important to you, it is best to dub the VHS footage to a DV tape and then capture from the DV tape. This way, you will have time code when you capture.

Canon DV camcorder with mini DV cassettes to iMac?

I have a Canon DV camcorder that uses mini DV cassettes. I have attached the Canon to my iMac with a Firewire to Thunderbolt connection. The Mac doesn't seem to recognize the video.
How can I get this to work and to upload my movies to my iMac?
(Can it get to iMovie/iPhoto?)

Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.

Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Why my Canon Elura 60 camcorder won't let me load the mini DV cassette? It keeps on rejecting it .

When I try to load the mini DV casette, it keeps on rejecting it and also displays "remove the cassette" on LCD panel.
What could be the problem? Has anyone experienced the same problem?

When your Elura 60 will not load a cassette, a normal DV cassette, you should try to clean the video heads. This may or may not resolve the issue, depending on what is happening inside the camcorder. A mini DV dry head tape cleaner can be used to not only clean the heads but can sometimes resolve issues like this.

Uploading old mini VHS cassetes to iMovie

I have a box full of the old VHS mini cassettes that I would like to find a way to put on iMovie. Since they are not digital, Im assuming they would need to be converted somehow??? Before I run down to Radio Shack, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what I might be able to do?

Forget Radio Shack.
Let me assume that these movies are important to you and that you want the best quality possible.
All good analog to digital video converters use Firewire. Firewire converters give much higher quality and better results.
I don't think any USB device (like Elgato) can "keep up" with a video stream, unless it uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08/09, why?
iMovie 08/09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08 / 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination.

Throw out old mini DV cassettes?

Over the years I have created a number of movies and subsequently saved these back onto the tape and then created a DVD in iDVD.
I now have 22 cassettes and 22 DVDs. The original footage has been deleted.
I presume that if I wanted another copy of one of the DVDs I could just copy it using a suitable app.
I am wondering if I really need to keep the cassettes too? If I needed to could I copy them back into iMovie? I have a hunch that I'm wasting my time keeping these old cassettes, especially as we are moving towards hard-disk cameras such as the JVC range. Any thoughts?

4. then create 8 copies - 5 to send, 1 for home, 1 for my work, 1 for my wife's work
5. then i save iMovie and iDVD files (about 20Gb per 1hr tape) on to a 1TB (1,000GB) external drive
My biggest issue?
I simply don't want to lose my photos or movies...

Trouble capturing problematic mini dv cassette

I have received a panasonic super mini dv in the mail that i need to capture in final cut pro for a project.
When i play the tape on my deck the image is boxy. the deck has trouble reading it...it shows an image but blurry and it looks almost like boxes are all within the image...I tried to play it on my canon xl2, but the same thing happened. i normally use panasonic mini dvs with no problem...but they are not super mini dvs...is this the problem? or is the tape just damaged? or am i do something else wrong?

No, no need to push the PMU button... I'd only do this if it was every tape...
The dub might help... it's just a matter of having a deck/camera to play back the original, then set another deck/camera to record it in the SP mode. If it is the LP mode this will help... I'd suggest you get the same camera that shot the tape if you can for the source machine.
If it was recorded in Israel, it's likely a PAL recording. try capturing it as PAL. I'd see if I can make a dub somewhere...?

Josh, there really is no good way in and out of the iPad for recording audio without some sort of interface. There are a broad range available, some starting under $100.

Can't load mini dv

I have two miniDV tapes I need to import but it imports a few seconds then a msg pops up saying "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could bedue to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved." I've seen this once before on a miniDV tape. I tried with 2 of my tapes today and faced the abort again. I made sure that the capture was for DV and changed the setting to DV NTSC.
Any answers?

1) Clean the heads and tape path of the vtr with a quality head cleaning Mini-DV cassette, if you have one.
2) Fast forward the tape you want to capture all the way to the end, and then rewind it all the way to the begriming once. This re-packs the tape on the spindles and hopefully removes any binding that might occur from storage etc.
3) If the problem persists, go to the Capture Settings Tab of the Log and Capture Window and set the Capture Settings to Non-Controllable Device:
Once done, you will have to manually roll the tape in play, and then press the Capture Now button.
Note: If you are capturing Mini DV tapes in the Non-Controllable Device mode, and the tape rolls through a gap where there is not video, it is likely that the audio will drift out of sync at that (those) point(s) in the captured file.
You will also have to manually stop the capture process and tape.

• if Your Mac - do not have a FireWire port - then You also need a FW to Thunderbolt converter.
I prefer to use
• iMovie HD6 - to do the Import as it can handle 100% Interlaced SD-Video Quality (as the Camera delivers and as DVD use as standard (if that would be of interest))
Remember that un-compressed SD-DV-quality is hugh and needs about 13.5Gb per hour to be stored ar FULL Quality.

Camera not recognized. Was up to a few days ago

I've been using a Canon video camera FV-M10 mini-DV for live video (Skype/iChat) and also for importing video (mini-DV cassette) into Final Cut Express, After Effects or iMovie up until a few days ago. Then all of a sudden (my MacPro) nor any of the software can recognize my camera anymore. I can't recall if this came after the last security up-date from Apple a few days ago. But, I've tried everything. Both Firewire and USB connections using a few different cables. In Skype...(sometimes) it automatically shows the FV-M10 in the camera slot, but the screen is black. No, I checked if I left the cover on. Any ideas? Geez, I'd better check my Sony WS5 digital camera and see if that is recognized. Yes, both pics and AVCHD videos are seen using the Firewire connection. Anyone have any ideas? Please Help! Is this an issue with the new Apple Up-Date?

Most computers with front and back Firewire and indeed USB ports have different controllers for them inside.
A look in the system Preferences should confirm this (Listed as Buses at least)
My USB layout
Often Shutting down the computer with all periferals unplugged (cable wise) and waiting 15 minutes will get the ports and controllers to reset.
It may pay to try this.
Where the App is should not matter in this context. (It does for Updating purposes)
Is this a camera that can play back other media/Devices and convert it in to DV for onward Firewire connection to the computer ?
Sometime they store in one format and can output in another. This allows them to act as DV converters.
This may bear some impact on the settings on the camera.
You said the Computer has 400/800 ports.
Do you mean it has one of each ?
Or do you mean you are using an Adapter and running some devices at 400 and some at 800 ?

(newbie alert) - simple question?

My Dell is four years old and dying. I am considering an iMac G5. One of the main things I would want to be able to do with it, right out of the box, is as follows. I asked someone at the Apple store if this was easy to do, and his response seemed very complicated. Would a new iMac G5 using just the pre-loaded iLife stuff be able to the following:
I have burned many old home family movies from VHS to DVD using a DVD recorder hooked up to the VCR. The DVD recorder is a cheap model, so it doesn't allow me to edit much at all; I more or less get just a straight transfer of whatever is on the VHS tape, over to the DVD.
I'd like to be able to pop in one of those DVDs I've generated from those VHS tapes, and then be able to really aggressively work with that "footage" to create montage clips into a new "movie", so maybe out of 60 minutes of raw footage of a family picnic from 1985, I want to be able generate a watchable 5-minute DVD clip that just shows the interesting stuff. I'd like to be able to lay music from iTunes over top of this, add titles and credits and whatnot, and then burn to DVD to share with family members, or upload to a web location (.Mac?) for family members to access and view.
It would be nice if I could also incorporate digital still photos from my digital camera, and/or short MPEG movies my "still" camera can take (each just 15 seconds long).
Is this all within the easy grasp of the iLife suite?

Last night, I took a close look at the inputs and outputs on my little JVC mini-DV video camera, which is about four years old. It's pretty clear it has no analog-in ports, so I don't think I can use it as the go-between unit from the VHS for a transfer of the VHS content onto the iMac. Reason being, the only "in" port on the mini-DV camera is a little "DV in /out" port, and I certainly don't believe the VCR has any type of corresponding "DV" output line. So, as for getting the old home movies from the VHS tapes into the iMac for editing and DVD buring, I believe -- based on the responses I've received in this forum -- it does boil down to using something like the Canopus ADVC-100 to allow me to make that transfer.
The related question for the overall project then becomes, am I confident I'll be able to get content into mu iMac from my other main source: a small library of home movies on mini-DV cassette tapes. The JVC mini-DV camcorder has an S-video out port (plus a "headphone" audio out jack that splits to RCA audio lines), so where can I run that to get it into the iMac? Would the Canopus ADVC-100 take that in? The only other "out" line on the camcorder is that "DV in/out" line I mentioned above. Nothing anywhere says anything about firewire... is that "DV" line a standard thing? Can the iMac take it in directly? Could it run through the Canopus unit?

Premiere Pro CS4 (Windows 7) will not (Capture or Record) connect with DV Cass Recorder

For 12 yrs I've Never had a problem w Adobe Prem Pro seeing my Panasonic AG-DV2000, DV cassette Recorder. Premiere Pro CS4 (with Windows 7 Ultimate) will not connect (Capture or Record)with my DV Cassette Recorder - Panasonic AG-DV2000. I upgraded my computer to below components & added Windows 7 at same time. Have had Adobe Prem Pro CS4 since fall with no problems. I usually have 2 - 5 videos, with 2 - 4 audios, going at same time on my timeline. (These digital videos & audios I shot myself professionally with mini DV cassettes.) Most projects are between 10 to 50 mins on timeline, w transitions or crossfades between video & audios. Firewire attached from computer to Panasonic. No Capture card in new system, not needed, use to watch over an external TV, now watch over a second monitor or in program monitor. Project Settings Video -- Timecode             Audio -- Audio Samples
Capture Format (tried both) DV & HDV   (all settings checked for during preview & capture)
                Under DV               says Panasonic is Online, export to tape/it renders/Premiere controls the Panasonic recorder -looks like it's recording, but see no video -                                                 hear the sound. On Playback nothing was recorded? ( And Can't capture from tape to computer)
                Under HDV            Says Panasonic is Offline, but computer able to control the Panasonic start/stop, but doesn't record or capture tape to computer?
[ I think this DV/HDV part is correct...... it's getting very confusing at this point??!! Your help is appreciated Thank YOU ]

Audio and video not synchronized when exporting from Premiere Pro CS6

Hi
We have made a project in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 that´s intended to be exported to DVD (it´s a weeding). We are working with NTSC DV Widescreen. The exporting is 720x480
We have 2 audio lines activated and sounding on this project.
The question is:
When exporting the entire video (the entire timeline sequece) using Adobe Media Encoder to formats like H.264 (NTSC DV Widescreen)... Quick Tile Movie or AVI without compression (we tested these formats) the 2 audio channels get unsynchronized from the video. The same problem occurs if we get a direct link of the timeline from Premiere to Encore.
And Inside Premiere Preview audio is preety correct.
Does anyone here are getting such problem?
Also..can I ask another question (as I´m not expert on video production)?. What´s the best format for our purpose? Export a video to be played to DVD (we record weedings, birthdays..social events). No problem the time to export. We´d like the best quality for output.

We have 4 cameras here. 1 is Sony model HD1000 (since it works with Mini-DV cassete we need to capture the image via Firewire). 2 cameras are Sony HD2000 (it generates *.MPEG files if I remember well). And 1 camera is a Panasonic AG-DVC7 (it generates *.MTS files)
We start a new project using the Standard NTSC Widescreen 48Khz format. When we drag to the timeline for example the MTS file...Premiere ask us if we want to Keep and Change timeline to suit the file specification. Anyway we always have 1 or 2 camera files that has a yellow line over timeline.
But I renders correct...no problem to edit...and we had no problem with Premiere CS5.5 :/
We are downloading the latest update of Premiere. I´ll make some test and publish here if the problem persist.
