Mini-DV/DVD/Gigabytes

Hello.
I have a couple of questions I was hoping someone could answer.
1. How many gigabytes are necessary on my harddrive in order to import one hour of mini-DV tape?
2. Is there a best DVD format to use?
3. Do DVDs come in different capacities?
4. USB or FIREWIRE for hook up from my laptop (ibook G4) to the external burner?
5. How long does a burn take? I will probably have about 50 to do.
Thanks for any input......I'm a bit new to this.

Hello!
1. DV video runs at 13GB per hour. You need an additional 10-15GB for swap files etc., so count on 25+GB.
2. There is only one: mpeg2 which is the standard DVD format.
3. Yes and no! A standard single layer DVD is 4.7 GB. This is enough for 120 minutes of video, but as that must include titles, transitions, themes etc, count on 110 minutes. A dual layer DVD doubles that - if you can burn them.
4. FIREWIRE!
5. Depends on the speed and capacity of your Mac, as well as how much RAM you have and not least how much space is left on your hard disk (at least 40GB). Also depends on how 'complicated' your video is, i.e. lots of added music, transitions etc. It takes longer (sometimes much longer) than you think, up to many hours. Music in partcular takes ages to render.
If you have to produce 50 copies, you should save the iDVD project as a disk image and burn the DVDs from that. That way you won't have to render the project more than once. A DVD burn of a one hour video should not take more than 45 minutes from a disk image.
Lastly, when your DVD project is rendering, or you are burning a DVD, close down all other applications, make sure your hard disk does not go to sleep, then walk away and do something else, like golf or a movie! Better still, leave it to do its thing overnight.

  • Missing Mac Mini Restore DVD disk 2, need to Cancel Installation

hi, I'm a Mac newbie. I recently bought a mac mini from someone. Unfortunately, I didn't realize at the time that there should be 2 restore dvds instead of just one (I thought the Os X Tiger drop in dvd was the 2nd dvd).
I'm trying to reinstall the OS X along w/the software b/c I ran into some problems with the Mac mini. But when I get to the screen that says, "please insert Disk 2", I have no disk 2. I can't cancel the installation b/c the Cancel button is grayed out. I tried shut down and restart the computer from disc one directly, but after click through a series of Next buttons, it only leads me to the same screen.
Now I can't use my Mac mini at all. Short of fork over $40 for a replacement dvd from Apple, is there anyway I can restore to the previous point prior to my attempted installation/cancel the current installation?
    Much thanks in advance.
Mac Mini 1.25 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4)

"is there anyway I can restore to the previous point prior to my attempted installation/cancel the current installation?"
No, sorry. That is not a feature of Mac OS.
If you have an Apple retail store nearby head on over there, explain your situation and see if they'd be willing to copy the 2nd disc for you.

  • Unable to boot on Mac Mini from DVD burned from .iso image

I'm following the Beginner's Guide to try and install Arch on a Mac Mini "Late 2009".
I have downloaded archlinux-2014.10.01-dual.iso and associated .sig, and have verified it using the gpg2 command described in the guide (including the link to http://sparewotw.wordpress.com/2012/10/ … -sig-file/ which gave some assurance that the ambiguous answer produced by gpg2 was in fact legitimate).
I then used OSX's Disk Utility to burn the .iso file to a blank DVD. After verifying the burn, it ejected the disk.
When I re-inserted it, I received a message that the disk was unmountable, giving me the option to Ignore or Eject. I chose Ignore. Then I went to the System Preferences > Startup Disk, to see if it would at least appear there as an option, but it didn't.
(I should mention that I also burned the same file to another disk using a Windows machine, and when I inserted it into the Mac I got the same message, so I don't think it's corrupted media. (Bad reader, perhaps? eek.) )
That's where I stand. There are so many variables at play here (many of them Apple-induced, I think) that I've been unable to find a solution that fits my situation. Could someone please provide suggestions / pointers / answer?
    Thanks,
    Chap

Exactly right. Holding the Option key caused a display of various bootable OSes, including the one I had just burned from the Mac using hdiutil (weirdly entitled "windows"). I selected it, and it booted. I now have a console. Problem solved. Thanks.
UPDATE: note that this boot disk *cannot* be seen or selected via the OSX System Preference > Startup Disk panel. Holding the Option key during startup seems to be the only way to select it.

  • Can I install OS 10.4 DVD on G3 B&W (CD-ROM only) from Mac Mini with DVD?

    I have G3 B&W 400Mhz 384Mb memory 9Gb hard drive.
It has CD-ROM, Zip Drive, Firewire, USB & Ethernet and currenty running on OS 10.2.
I'd like to upgrade to OS 10.4, but it's on DVD.
I also own Mac Mini G4 with DVD-RW, and I can connect it to G3 with Firewire using Target Drive Mode. G3 recognize Mac Mini as a hard drive.
Can I install OS 10.4 from Mac Mini? Thank you for your help!

If you mean the 10.4 DVD is a full-retail copy for any machine, not the version that came with the Mac mini.

  • Mac mini verses dvd recorder: need advice

I am looking at DVD recorders, mostly so I can burn dvds of programs I have stored on my Comcast DVR. Could a superdrive mac mini do the job instead? I think the Comcast box has Firewire out, as well as component and composite outputs. What is confusing me now is, how will I be able to use the TV to access the programs on my DVR, while also needing the TV to see what I'm doing on the mini when burning a dvd? Would I have to switch back and forth between dvr and mini inputs on the tv?? Is it all going to be a lot more complicated than just buying a $120 dvd recodrer?

If your video camera is a miniDV camera, which most modern ones are, then all you will need is a 4 to 6 pin FireWire cable. You can get them from practically anywhere that sells computer/video cabling.
And ues, the Mac mini will be able to handle your video editing needs. I would however recommend you upgrade to at least 1GB RAM.

  • How can I reload and repair the OS on a MC Mini sans DVD

My Mac Mini has started showing the spinning rainbow and then not responding.  I'd like to wipe the HD and reinstall the OS that came with the system (no DVD).  Can I do this?

    Hello, yes you can.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there.

  • Ipad Mini to DVD for better audio?

For iPad Mini, I want to output signal to DVD HDMI port for better 5.1 sound.  Is that possible? Is splitter required?  Presently I am using the Lightning Digital AV Adapter to connect Ipad mini directly to TV, but that limits audio to TV's speakers.  Would prefer to use home theater if I can.

  • Does the Superdrive support mini cd/dvd? The small dvd/cd disc?

I just received a program that came on a mini dvd/cd type disk. I was just curious if it was possible to use in the drive on my macbook pro or if it would get stuck and require service to operate correctly again.
    Any help is appreciated.

NO!!! Do Not use any non-standard disks in your slot-load Superdrive.

I have a projected 7 DVD BU iTunes. On the first burn it made three and failed on four. In the second burn it made six and failed on seven.
I'm running Leopard with iTunes files on a USB Maxtor drive.
mini drive? usb drive? iTunes corruption? too much coffee between burns?

I switched the cable from using USB to using Firewire and it made the entire burn without a problem.

The DVD might boot on the Mac Pro but if it does the installer will not let you install on the Mac Pro.
There is a possible workaround that is often used, and at one point in the past was even recommended as a solution by Apple.
Boot the Mac Pro in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
Connect the Mac Pro via FireWire to the Mac mini.
Boot the Mac mini from the DVD
Install on to the Mac Pro hard disk which will show up as a FireWire external drive.
Boot the Mac mini from the Mac Pro drive which will show up as a FireWire external drive. You can do this by holding down the Option/Alt key.
Run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server Combo update.
    Shutdown the Mac mini.
Power down the Mac Pro by pressing briefly the power button.
Disconnect the Mac Pro from the Mac mini
Boot the Mac Pro as normal.
Hopefully it will boot normally but now with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server installed on it.

  • Compression 20 min for DVD

I have been working with FCP 6.0.1 and i have built a symphony of visuals that lasts 20 min. It wont let me export straight into compressor (it compresses partially then the history countdown says 00:00) so i have to send it to quicktime 1st. My ultimate destination for this is DVD. I recorded SD NTSC DV 3:2. I guess i need a compression comparable to .m2v?

I think you need to step back a bit here.
Yes i do do a self contained movie, but what compression do i use in QT? i tried Animation
If you're trying to get to DVD why are you exporting to Animation?
What was your original sequence... DV NTSC?
If so then read through these posts again. Just export to QUICK TIME, USE CURENT SETTINGS, check SELF CONTAINED. Then bring that file into Compressor on it's own.... FCP is not in the equation at this point. Does that work for you?
Also, will recompress all frames prevent ghosting?
Probably not but it would help if you told us what you mean by ghosting and at what point in the process do you see it.

  • Mini handycam DVD stuck in drive

My son put a mini dvd into the drive and I am unclear as to how it can be ejected.

You can get it out easily using double-sided sticky tape. Just put it on a credit card and insert the card partially in the CD/DVD slot with the sticky tape facing downwards and press the eject key. Wait for the DVD drive to stop trying to eject the DVD and then just pull out the card and the DVD will come out stuck to it.

  • Mac Mini CD / DVD Combo drive malfunction

My Mac mini rejects every CD, DVD I put in. The same very disks disks work perfectly fine on my PC!
It was all working fine for about a year, and then all of a sudden, I have this problem!
I do see a lot of people reporting this problem in the forums; can anyone PLEASE help?

Perhaps the drive is bad. Is the mini under warranty? If so, take it in for repair/replacement.

  • Does exists a diagnosis tool to test the mac mini cd dvd unit ?

Just befor decide to ask for assistance. Thanks

The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Reset the Power Manager (PMU) or System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. For example a "combo drive" can read a DVD-R and burn a CD-R however it cannot burn a DVD-R. The utility System Profiler may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
If the discs continue to not be recognized, please contact Apple, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.
