Mini DV to external drive to iMovie to DVD – strategy?

I have had 4 hours of old home movies transferred from Beta to mini dv tapes, and plan to transfer them to an external firewire drive using a borrowed camcorder, then use iMovie to edit and burn them onto a one hour DVD. Can I use the copy of iMovie HD 6 on my internal drive to process the dv material on the external drive, or should I install iMovie on the external drive - and will iLife let me do that? There is insufficient capacity on the internal drive to handle more than a few minutes of dv material.
Thanks for your help. It's my first crack at iMovie - any hints would be gratefully received!

hello there eagledavid1.
Welcome to the discussions.
You should have no problem doing that (although 4 hours will take a BUNCH of space). I have imovie on my internal drive and create the movies on the external drive.
All you do is open imovie6. A "create new project" window will open.
All you do is name the project. Then in the next field point it to your external hard drive.
One thing to remember is that DV format video can takes up a lot of disk space. About 3.6 MB/second or 13GB an hour.
One way to conserve disk space is to be selective about what you import to iMovie in the first place.
I recommend NOT to import wholes tapes, but do a selection WHILE import.
concerning disk size:
you need 10 - 15 GB free disk space on your internal drive, just to make iDVD work correctly... don't overcrowed your internal drive ...-
do some reading:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/imovie/
best practise:
don't start with your "best" project, start with some "trash" project, 5min max, just to get used with all the functions & options...
good luck!!

Hi ya'll! I'm still learning how to navigate my way with Lightroom. (Last time I wrote, I did get some responses that work. Thanks so much!) Now, I have another question. When I try to copy pics from my external drive to a CD/DVD, no matter if do it from LR or my drive, I keep getting the message; "Disk burning is not supported by LR on this computer." I've tried everything I can think of, so, I thought I'd see if anyone may know if there's anything I can do. Or could it be that my computer just can't handle it? Help!!! So frustrating!!  I have a PC Lenovo computer, I don't know if this makes any difference. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!!!

Have you burned Discs with other programs using this computer? Are you certain that you have a drive that will burn discs?

  • Captured to external drive, now iMovie won't work

I have a Mac formatted external drive and a friend (who is soon to become an ex-friend) talked me into capturing my movies on an external drive then editing from there (had been doing great up until then capturing to my internal drive). So I captured a 45 minute movie onto the external drive through the computer via iMovie. Used a Firewire 800 cable from the computer to the external HD and a 400 Firewire cable from the camera to the computer. It all went fine. Opened iMovie but instead of my normal event list, there were two folders marked "Event 1" and "Event 2". When I tried to clicked on the the first one, iMovie tried to "initialize" it but kept shutting down. I looked in the folder and the files were broken up into tiny 1 or 2 second movies which said "Q-DV". So I trashed those two folders then captured directly to the internal HD, but it did the same thing again! Made two folders which iMovie can't open. I looked in iMovie Preferences but don't see how to correct the problem. Have I ruined something?! I'm stuck. Can't do anything. Heeeeelllllp! (please)

Shame on me. I have to stop running to the forums every time some little thing goes wrong. Here's what happened: I tried to capture a project I had already rough cut on the PowerBook a few years back. The original was Super-8 footage which I'd had transferred professionally to a mini DV cassette. I had captured that on my PowerBook, done a rough cut, then transferred that to another brand new DV cassette. That's the one I tried transferring to the MacBook Pro. I'd done that before but with video originating from my DCR-PC100, so the source was DV. This morning I rooted around through my cassettes and found the original transfer cassette and tried capturing it directly to the internal drive of the MacBook Pro. It worked perfectly. So I guess the problem was the second generation capture of the Super-8 footage via the PowerBook (using iMovie2). However, I'm still dubious about capturing video through the MacBook (using the configuration I mentioned) to an external drive. Everything I've read so far about storing video on the external drive talks about moving it from the internal drive. I've yet to see anything about capturing to the external drive so I'm reluctant to ever try that again. Anyway, problem solved.

  • Using an external drive with iMovie HD

I just received and formatted my external drive. At first I chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Zero out data. When I got info (⌘+I) of the drive afterwards, it had 79 MB being used, journalling? So I then Erased it and chose Mac OS Extended and now it shows 59 MB as being used, whatever for IDK.
Does it matter which format I use for working with iMovie, journaled or not?
In the Get Info window there is an Ignore Ownership option. I know it doesn't need to be ticked when an OS is going to be loaded on the drive but am wondering if I should tick it since the drive is only going to be used mainly for iMovie projects and no OS is going to be loaded.
Should I tick Ownership or leave it off?
I have iMovie projects that have not been edited yet and a iDVD project on my internal drive.
Can I just drag and drop or copy and paste the iMovie projects to the external drives icon and delete the project from my internal drive to create a little more space? Is it simple as that?
Same thing with the iDVD project after archiving it first? Copy/Paste,Drag/Drop and delete.
I've got a backup drive but use SuperDuper! so I don't have any experience with using 'scratch?' drives.
I've read elsewhere on this Discussion site that the finished iMovie projects need to be on the internal drive in order to transfer to and edit in iDVD.
How and where do I move the project to from the external? Drag/Drop or Copy/Paste to my Desktop then Drag/Drop, Copy/Paste to iDVD, or some other way?
    Thanks.

I am not sure zeroing out data on a SATA drives "marks" bad blocks/sectors. I think this may have only been on SCSI drives. I couldn't find a reference that it behaves this way on a SATA drive. Thus the only advantage being that it more securely erases files.
The click and hold works the same on a PB!

  • How do I import an imovie project from an external drive to imovie?

My hard drive on Macbook Pro 2009 recently crashed. Luckily I backed up my imovie projects on an external. I upgraded with new hard drive and installed snow leopard. I transferred this particular imovie project from external to the 'movies' folder on the internal drive. When I launch imovie to find this particular imovie project all I see are various folders associated with this particular project not the imovie project icon (the icon where I double click and begin editing). If I try to import directly from external drive the project icons are grayed out.
Furthermore if I try to import any video (whether from external or internal drive) on imovie it says:
This file could not be moved:
(Insufficient access privileges for operation )
All movie files play on quicktime when I test them, so I'm unsure as to why I don't have access privileges.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any replies to this one? Anyone????

you can either drag it to the imovie window or import it from the file menu.

  • Can I use my late 2006 mac mini as an external drive for my late 2012 mac mini?

I have a (late 2006) Mac mini that I would like to use as an external drive for my (late 2012) Mac mini.  Is this possible and can anyone suggest what cables would be needed.  I am aware that the ports are very different i.e firewire and thunderbolt.  Thanks in advance!

    - You can boo the old Mac in Targe Disk Mode and connect the two via FireWire (FW) You will need a FW 400 to FW 800 cable or a FW 800 or FW 400 cable and appropriate adopters
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
    - Use the old Mac normally and setup Disk Sharing and access the old Mac via the network. The old Mac's disk will show up  under Devices on the new Mac. One you set up the old Mac yo do not need mouse or keyboard or monitor. You can also setup Screen sharing and actually use the old Mac from the new Mac.
    - Remove the HD from the old Mac and place it in an external USB enclosure of dock and connect it to the new Mac

  • Mac Mini auto disconnects external drives

Disconnects external drives using USB 3.0 drives were attached to Windows XP machine drives have no password/lock.  Genius Bar tried as well same results, tried using new MacBook Pro same result suspect software OS X issue looking for work around to transfer data/pictues etc. to new Mac Mini?

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini with 10.9.2 and use a WD drive in a Macally enclosure running on the USB3 port and have no issues.  The drive sleeps when the Mac sleeps but stays on when the Mac shuts down (some Mavericks issue I guess).  Not sure why your drive would disconnect.  Do you have the setting to not piut hard drive to sleep?  Not sure this would fix anything or not for you.

  • Boot Intel Mini from USB external drive

Hi -- can anyone confirm that Intel MacMini can boot from an external USB (NOT firewire) drive?
I see plenty of notes that people boot from firewire, but I haven't seen anything about USB.
    Thanks for your help!!

Alan, SATA drives are "faster" than ATA drives, but I don't think the have any other advantage, and unfortunately you lose that advantage when you opt for a USB 2.0 or FireWire 400 connection (they both are slower than SATA or ATA, so it's like a bottleneck). And while USB 2.0 is theoretically faster than FW400, it real-world use FireWire is faster.
There have been reports of people successfully booting off a USB drive on Macintels, and some of them even where Mac minis, at least as far as I can remember. Unlike on PPC Macs, in order to boot off an external drive, you have to partition it with the GUID partition scheme. I'm not sure that cloning a drive would automatically do that, which could explain why Seedling can't boot off his clone ...

  • Relink iPhoto videos on an external drive to iMovie projects?

In iMovie 9 on Leopard, how do I relink iPhoto videos to iMovie projects after I've moved the iPhoto library to an external drive?  iPhoto works fine, iMovie not. Thanks

It occurred to me that I could test this. I recently got a new Mac, and I moved my iPhoto Library from the SSD to the hard drive. I usually use Aperture so I have never opened iPhoto on this machine. In fact I moved my whole Home Folder to the Hard Drive.
iMovie was not seeing the iPhoto Events. I opened iPhoto (for the first time). Then I restarted iMovie.
It offered to generate thumbnails for iPhoto. I did not have to restart the Mac.
I know your situation is different. I just thought I would report what I did in case it might help.
I am not seeing any of the yellow triangles, but I am still looking.

  • External Drive and iMovie

How do I set up an external drive with my PB and sony mini dv so I can import footage to and edit from the external?
    1. Sony to external to PB?
    2. Sony to PB using FW 400 and external to PB using FW 800?

usually, it doesn't matter wether you're daisy-chaining (Sony >> ext. HD >> PB) or, you're using both fw-ports of your PB... the firewire protocol (even the older fw400) is fast enough to 'shuffle' the datatstreams in both directions simultanously in one single wire ..
we do read reports, e.g. some Canon camcorders don't 'like' other fw-devices on same port (=daisy chaining) ... just give it a try...-
    PS:
be sure to format your ext. HD to 'MacOsExtended/hfs' BEFORE usage with iM ...

  • Connecting external drive crashes iMovie 8 - Apple please fix this!

If I have external drives connected when I start iMovie 8 it will crash when it tries to index them.
Also if I have no drives connected and iMovie 8 running, the program will crash as soon as I connect a drive.
Apple, please fix this! I need to use external drives for storing of my videos.

Are your external drives formatted as Mac OS Extended / HFS+ ..? They should be.
If they aren't, you'll have to remove whatever's already stored on them, and then re-format them using Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. You can then put back what was stored on them.
(P.S: I have NO crashes using iMovie '08 and any correctly-formatted external FireWire drives. I don't use external USB drives, as they're not fast enough for the sustained read/write speeds which video requires.)

  • External drive how to use DVD

Latest OS on MacBook Air.  When I connect the external drive and I want to
watch an exercise DVD I have used before, I can't find the part of the DVD I want to watch.
Also, now when I want to eject the DVD from the drive, I cannot find this option under Finder.
So the DVD is now stuck in the external drive, and I can't use it at all.

  • How can i use projects from an external drive in iMovie 13?

In iMovie 11´you were able via a button to edit movies from an external hard drive without needing to install those in your computer´s internal hard drive, but in iMovie 13´ you are not able to do that anymore.
I love iMovie, because it simplicity to create and make movies and i love they added better performance for green/blue screening, but i found a problem, i have a hard drive of only 128 GB, and with my content the clips i have don´t fit in the internal hard drive so i can´t install those clips, please do something in iLife 13´and even in iWork 13´there aren´t all those options anymore that let you do your work, some people think apple is bad for work, but i always have been telling them that all Microsoft features are in Mac too but with simplicity but in the new lineup they aren´t, i love apple, i haven´t got any device that isn´t from apple even my mobiles.
    Please do something! ;(
