MINI DV to IMOVIE

Hello
I am trying to move up from years of great service from my G5 Dual 1.8 GHZ Power PC with dual CRT screens! and using imovie HD 6.0.03 to a new work enviroment of working with an IMAC with Dual 27" screens and a 15" MacBook Pro with Retina.  I have transferred over my itunes library to both of new computers and my old iphoto library.    Now I am wrestling with transferring (200) MINI DV 1 hour tapes from my sony video camera to my IMAC.
I want to transfer all of the raw footage from the camera to latest version of imovie and then back it all up on an external hardrive, that I will access as I work on future projects.
My problem, the latest version of imovie does not see the input coming from my set up.
Here is the hardware I am using to connect things: DCRHC20 Sony Camera out the A/V out to the A/V in on a Green Valley Canopus ADVC-100 DV Convertor and out the ADVC-100 4 pin firewire to an Apple firewire to thunderbolt adaptor which is connected to my IMAC.
The ADVC-100 DV convertor works without drivers, that is the benefit of using it. The IMAC is communicating with the ADVC-100, so the problem does not lie with the Sony Camera.  I plan on calling Green Valley on Monday morning to see if there is any reason why the ADVC-100 will not work with my new set-up.
At this point I am guessing the problem lies with the new IMOVIE and maybe I need to use an earlier version that will import MINI DV tapes. Or I need to turn something on in the operating system to allow IMOVIE to see the footage.
This is my first time using an IMOVIE product other than IMOVIE HD 6.0.03, so I called applecare and asked them how to import it, but when the IMAC could not see the set-up we hit a road block.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
1. In iMovie up to HD 6 You can set Playback quality on screen in iMovie Pref.
(to use computer at it's best)
2. Connecting Camera to FW and a small TV to Camera - analog-out and in iMovie
pref (up to HD 6) to playback via Camera.
• Now You see the full Quality on the extra TV. and this even during Your editing.
EQUAL to FULL Control over picture and audio. The way I work
(This also works for FinalCut Express and Pro BUT NOT FOR iMovie'08 or 09 ! !)

You would need to transfer it to a computer that has a DVD burner and appropriate software.

  • Mini DVD to iMovie

Bengt posted the following about one month ago in response to a question asking how to get material from a mini DVD to iMovie.
    "I do:
    • Connect my Camera to a Stand alone DVD-player via the analog cable supported with the Camera
plus a RCA-SCART converting plug. IT HAS TO HAVE an in / out switch.
    • Then record a new miniDV tape while DVD-player plays. I see it in my Camera LCD-sceen and
    control it by DVD-remote control
    • Use the tape into iMovie
∆ Alt if the Camera has video trough function You can record/import into iMovie direct via FW, Camera, analog cable and DVD-player. Not all have this facility."
Am I correct in understanding that I play the mini DVD in a DVD player that is connected to a mini DV camera that is in Record mode.
I don't know what an RCA-SCART converting plug is but I'll hunt around on Google. Further, "IT HAS TO HAVE an in / out switch". Set to in or out? I'm guessing 'out'.
    Thanking you in advance.

Bengt's advice says basicly: use a DVD standalone player (to avoid huzzle with non-standard-sized disks) and connect the out to the analogue-in of a camcorder..
scart plugs come as in- or out-connected.. some cables come with a switchable scart-plug.. yepp, out (=from the dvd).. and a connector which fits into the analogue-IN of a camcorder (=very few offer such a connection, read manual....)

  • No sound when transferring mini-dv to iMovie 8

I downloaded a mini-DV to iMovie and the video transferred without any audio. Could it have anything to do with a pop-up that said my "Start up disk was almost full? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi
May be - Full HD - is Your problem.
There should be a minimum of 25GB free on start-up hard disk.

  • Archiving Mini-DV Tapes - iMovie or QuickTime 7 Pro?

    Hello,
I've been through many similar posts here and on the Internet.  Like many, I have mini-dv tapes that need to be archived to an external hard drive for storage and editing, later.  After considerable research, I am inclined to select either iMovie 6 HD or QuickTime 7 Pro as the capture and editing application of choice:
Due to the skip field issue on interlaced source material, it appears that iMovie 6 HD does support interlaced source without resolution compromises.  It's not clear whether the skipped field occurs at capture as some purport or as a new project; regardless, the skipped field negates iMovie 8, 9, 11, and probably 2013 (mavericks) consideration for capture and, moreso, editing mini-dv imported video.
QT7 Pro has been suggested by some as having some strong file format/conversion features.  In addition, while its' editing features may be more limited, this application merits consideration if it truly provides a long-term archival format capability.  The native .mov format appears to be a historical main-stay for Apple (notwithstanding iMovie 2013).  And, the appeal of QT7 Pro is its' ability to import mini-dv tapes continuously without multiple clips and time-code issues.
Final Cut Pro is not part of this thread's objective despite obvious strengths.
It all boils-down to which would be the best (lossless transfer/no compression) capture application (iMovie 6 HD or QT7 Pro) and lowest common denominator file format (dv or .mov or other) for long term archival and editing at a future time.....
    Suggestions?

My preference would be iMovie 6 as DV files.

  • What is the best ripping software to convert my DVD's (scanned from mini tapes) into iMovies

I take my mini tapes to a company which they make into DVD's. I would like to edit them into iMovies. Which ripping software (preferably free) should I use. Please help.

If they use the standard DVD format of mpeg2:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion which includes it))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Using DVD-R mini discs with iMovie

    Good Day,
I am totally new to iMovie. I have a Sony dvd-r mini disc (4*, 1.4gb) with video footage and want to transfer it onto my Powerbook and into iMove for manipulation. I understand that the slot-loading feature does not accommodate mini-discs, so what are the ways that I can get this footage to where I want it?
I tried to email the folder with the video files in it, but I cannot open it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Lyndon,
as I see, we have two problems to solve:
    * getting the data
    * using the data
as you wrote, and that is correct, please don't slip any miniDVD into your drive.. some say, no prob, many broke their drives doing so...
so, you wrote, you email the folder... 1.4Gb of data... mailing? how did you accomplish that? what is the size of that data/folder/whatever which is on your Mac?
if the miniDVD was "finalized" (read camcorders manual) you should see a folder called VIDEO_TS, containing many... stuff. you should be able to "open" that folder by using your Mac's dvdplayer app (choose open folder)... plays fine? ok, step 2...
    Step 2)
welcome to step 2! <<note to myself: don't watch too much Python!>>
    now, we need conversion...
in the list in Sue's posting, choose DVD2DV... a good beginners prg AND it offers a tryout (stamps some watermark in the pic, but anyhow)...
try it, use it - when ok, buy it!
    come back for further questions...
and now to something completely different.............

  • Size of Mini DV to imovie - then to idvd

I have 4 (1 hour each) mini dv to input to imovie which I want to eventually burn to idvd.
1 - How much space does each 1 hour mini dv take in imovie?
2 - When transferring to Idvd - how much can I transfer into idvd for burning?
3 - Can I import 2 mini dv tapes into 1 file in imovie and then import to idvd? Or will it be too large???
    I am working with imovie 4 & idvd4
    thanks

    1: 13GB
2: 120 minutes minus time for animated themes.
3: Yes, you can. For best quality (and for not boring your audience) stay under about 70 minutes per DVD.

  • Sony mini-DVDs to imovie

My parents have recently bought a Sony HD video camera - namely the Sony HDR-UX1. I cannot figure out how to get the HD picture into either of my computers. Neither will load the mini-DVDs properly, so I am forced to use either an outboard cd/dvd deck, or the camera. the camera ONLY uses USB.
The only types of files that show up on a finalized mini-DVD are .clpi .mpls .dbmv and .m2ts
    Any ideas?
    Imac g5 vers.B 2Gig Superdrive   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   laptop: PowerBook G4

    Chris,
The Sony HDR-UX1 can be used with MPEG Streamclip (and the QT plugin) when used in the SD mode. If it was used in the new AVCHD mode, you appear to be out of luck on the Mac at this time.
but which of those files do i convert?
Try them in MPEG Streamclip and see. (I just hope they weren't shot in the AVCHD mode.)
    Take a look at: http://galbraiths.org/blog/2006/12/26/sony-hdr-ux1-camcorder/
Sony make some excellent equipment, but unfortunately, compatability with the Mac is not high on the product requirement list when new products are being designed.

  • Does mac mini come with iMovie or iPhoto

Do I have to pay for these? Reading on the net indicates that at some point they were a free DL in iLife (I think).
    Thanks

    Yes, they are included

  • Half of my video wont work on imovie on ipad mini

Hi all, i make youtube videos, for christmas i was lucky enough to recieve an ipad mini. i downloaded imovie on it to edit my videos, and i got it for free. i recorded my video on my camera as normal and imported the video on to my laptop (not a mac) and first of all it wouldnt let me sync it on my ipad so i had to go onto window movie maker and save it as a project then sync it, that seemed to work fine. So i went onto imovie on my ipad and imported and it was going great and i was editing, ( by the way my video was 27 minutes long) and then at one point of the video it stopped, the sound wouldnt work and it was still playing but the video was just a black screen? so i thought my camera must of stopped recording, so ive watched it back on my laptop and it is fine, something has happened while it has been synced from my laptop to my ipad and i dont no what? please some one help it is so annoying, i have synced it four times and it just wont work. annoying!
ALSO.. sorry for any spelling/ punctual mistakes, i cant be bothered to re correct just really want this problem sorted. thanks

I have now solved my problem..
I needed my video to be in MP4, lucky my camera has a MP4 mode on it so i didnt have to convert it!!

  • Imovie and mini DVD camcorder

My students made a movie on a DV camcorder when the camera quit working. I was able to import the partial video into Imovie, but we finished the movie on my Canon mini DVD camcorder. Is there any way to somehow get the second half of the movie (on two mini dvds) into Imovie so I can edit it all together? At this point, I burned the portion in Imovie and am trying to figure out how to combine them all on my pc. However, I really love Imovie and would like to use it. Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks

I have an external hard drive. So, I guess I could just save my imovie files in the portable hard drive and then move them to my pc or vice versa? However, aren't the formats different? When I tried to use Quick Time Pro, it didn't recognize the formats (Video_TS.BUP and Video_TS.VOB)
Could I move those files into my mac using my external hard drive and then import into imovie? I should say I'm a very new Mac user, and not very experienced with editing - have only begun.
    Thanks for all your help

  • Please help me open an iMovie trailer, moved to my iPad from my PC. I can view it on my iPad but am unable to import it into the app to edit it.

I created a trailer on an iPad at a workshop to use in my classroom. I retrieved it from my PC and can view it on my iPad mini, but the iMovie app won't open it. I need to edit it. Desperately need help. I want to show it to my students tomorrow. Thanks! I've checked other threads here but can't find a solution.

    Hi Leica 42,
I never said that a PP file moved to your ipad cannot be straight edited in keynote. Nor did I say that you needed a third party solution...
My response was to offer an option (Jump) because like many others, you're having problems.
Check out the app store and user Keynote reviews. There are more (by 1) 1 star ratings than 5 star ratings for the current version. There are 72 ratings of 3 or more stars while there are 78 ratings of one or two stars. In terms of statistical significance, the numbers are pretty equal, but I prefer to deal with an app that shows more top stars and fewer bottom stars. Some posters have been on here with your same question, so I'm thinking maybe, just perhaps, Keynote is not perfect.
Pro tech reviews vary, many given at the time it was released. Many do not point out that they actually used Keynote before the review. Google Keynote for more pro tech reviews where reviewers have actually used the app.

  • Sony TRV-350 8mm will not import correctly into iMovie 8.0.4 (Any ideas?)

I purchased a Sony TRV-350 because it is supposed to play all 8mm tapes, and has a bridge function that converts analog signal to DV. The camcorder also has inputs to connect a VCR to the camcorder and convert the signal to DV. I am trying to import hundreds of VHS and 8mm tapes to iMovie. I connect the camcorder via firewire to the computer. The computer recognizes the camcorder and has control of the camcorder. When I try to import the video everything seems fine. I can import a five second clip or twenty min. clip. The problem starts after you click "Done" on the importing screen. The importing screen closes, and the clip appears in iMovie. The problem is when viewing the clip in iMovie it is only half the length of the import. (I import a 10 min clip, only 5 min shows in iMovie) It seems like every other second is missing. So far I have tried these trouble shooting tips.
    1. Made sure the camera DV feature is turned on
    2. Made sure the camera is set to ilink
    3. The camera is set to NTSC with 30 FPS
    4. Opened played a note and close Garageband
Someone suggested I should try find a copy of iMovieHD (6.0.3) and try importing the videos. If you think this will work let me know.
Any suggestions, idea or help would be greatly appreciated. I am a new mac user, so please give detailed instructions.
    Thanks for your time.
    Tyrel

I believe the new 8 core mac pro only has firewire 800 connecters. So you would need a converter cable to connect your camera. Is that how you system is setup? If so, what kind of converter are you using? That could be the cause of your problem. A blue screen usually means you have some sort of connection issue.
