Mini DVDs okay in PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual Processor desktop?

I'm considering purchasing a camcorder that uses mini DVDs. Will these work in my PowerMac G5?

Thanks,

Mini DVDs are OK in any computer that has a tray-loading drive, but usually aren't for machines with a slot-loading drive.

  • Mac OS X Leopard on a PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual Processor

I have a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8 GHz on which I installed Leopard as an upgrade once v.10.5.1 was released. After the installation, I noticed intermittent problems of applications freezing on launch, abruptly quitting, and having to be force-quit to close. Some applications, especially Word and Quicken, sometimes give strange messages, such as being unable to find templates or unable to save memorized transactions or copies of a file. When these issues occur, rebooting the G5 makes them go away for a while. About a month after the initial installation, I did an archive and install of Leopard, but the same issues continue. Have any other G5 owners experienced these issues? If so, how were they resolved?

Regardless of OS, my dual 1.8 gave me problems right out of the box - kernel panics, freezes, force restart messages upon waking, and creeping corruption. I have had to wipe and reinstall roughly every 6-9 months. I am also aware of 2 other identical machines with the same issues - one where I used to work (the same issues were ongoing before I was ever hired). The contracted Apple service rep mentioned another identical unit with the same problems.
I had it in for service when warranty was still in effect and three more times since, all with the same issues. Apple replaced the RAM, the motherboard, then the processors, then the power supply - and still the problem persists. They had forgotten to reserialize the replacement motherboard, and I discovered that this was a used and recertified part. As far as I am concerned, they simply replaced one funky motherboard with another.
Interesting note - the last service guy told me that he was aware of "around 100 dual 1.8s with similar problems.
Apple should have replaced the entire machine, but they refused to do so, even with the issue being reported while under warranty and despite four service visits. I've owned 15 Macs so far. This is the only dog, but it is mangy as **** and always has been.

  • Powermac G5 2.0 GHz dual wi-fi signal problems

i was gifted a Powermac G5 2.0 GHz dual and my wi-fi signal has been intermittent at best despite my router being 10 feet away, and getting full signal on my macbook.
I then found out that it is supposed to have an external antennae for this, and also one for bluetooth (which I don't have)
Can anyone reccomend a good USB 2-1 bluetooth/wi-fi adapter that will solve this dilemma (and my lagging magic mouse) that is compatible with my system running 10.5.8, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

  • PowerMac G5 1.8 GHz Dual (Buy April 2005) Graphics Cards?

I want to buy a new graphics card for my PowerMac 1.8 Dual GHz which a got in April of 2005. I have not made any improvments to the hardware at all. All I do know is that the Nvidia 6600 Upgrade on Apple.com will not fit into my computer slots. If someone can tell me out of this list, the ones that will fit into my computer. Thanks
One of the following graphics cards:
ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
ATI Radeon 9800 XT or 9800 Pro
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL
    NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500
    PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   I don't know if I have PCI or PCI-X or PCI-Express ports.

    Happy New Year!!!
Would you say ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is better than Nvidia 6800, in terms of both performance and price?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mini dvds

Does the imac take mini dvds because I got a mini dvd camcorder and was seeing if I can just put the dvd in and edit the footage from the mini dvd.

The trouble is the Sony mini DVD handycams don't have firewire. I have been able to drag VOB files across USB (after the mini DVD has been finalized in the handycam). However, the mini DVD files have to be converted from Video_TS VOB to mp4 (I used a program called Open Shiiva that I found in a macworld posting). I can view the footage in QuickTime Player, but there's no audio and the whole process is very, very slow and cumbersome. I have dozens of mini DVDs that I need to convert (preferably without spending hundreds of dollars on new hardware and software). Any suggestions would be warmly appreciated.

  • Using side loading dvd drive with mini dvds

I am setting up a holiday project for my neices and nephew to make video christmas cards using photos and video from all year. The video is stored on the mini dvds that my sister uses in her Sony video camera. I have never tried to load a mini dvd into the imac since it doesn't have a tray. Has anyone ever done this?
    Please advise.

You should not use the mini-DVs or mini-CDs in a slot loading iMac. If you do insert one of those discs you may have to disassemble the iMac and the drive to get the disc out.
BTW, this is the discussion area for the iMac G4.
    The iMac G4 has a tray-loading drive.
If your iMac doesn't have a tray it is not an iMac G4.

  • Best way to encode from mini dvd's for FCP

My mom has a few mini DVD's that she wants me to edit for her. The DVD's are from the Sony DCR-DVD610. So my question is, what is the best way to bring the footage into FCP? Should I use Handbrake, or the MPEG Streamclip, or another program? Also, what settings should I use to encode them for use in FCP?

The "make dv" option in Streamclip works reasonably well for me.

  • Tecra M5: DVD drive does not read these mini DVDs

I have canon dvd handycam, and mini dvd works on it. One month back i recorded movie and pictures on mini dvd using handycam and ran mini dvd on my tecra M5 dvd drive, it worked very fine.
Now after 1 month i have 5 mini dvds with movies and pictures which i took on 1 month vacation in diffierent countries, i tried my best but tecra dvd drive does not read these mini dvd, cd drive label appears instead dvd drive when i put mini dvd in it.
All other standard size dvds, cds working fine on it.Its complicated and as well as irritating.
    Any suggestions?
    Why its messedup?

Seems the lens cannot read this miniDVDs. Possibly the drive lens cannot calibrate and therefore the miniDVDs are nonreadable.
Try the solution from sascha. Maybe youre a lucky man and it works.
If not, try to remove the drive physically from the notebook. Reboot the notebook without the drive. The Windows and BIOS shouldnt recognize the drive.
Then shuts down again, put the drive into the notebook and boot up the unit.
The notebook should recognize the drive and should indicate the firmware again.
Im not sure if this will help you but its attemptable

Help please. Extended display won't work on MBP and AOC 20" 1600 x 900  60HZ monitor. Mirror display does. I've a mini dvd to vga converter cable. Should this work?

I have the same mini display port adapter and Belkin DVI-HDMI cable (but a Panasonic 42" Plasma HDTV) so just set this up on it to see if I could duplicate your problem, unfortunately for you (but good for me) I can't.
I connected the adapter+HDMI cable before switching the HDTV on and then powered up the MBP. It (the HDTV) came up with my background right away (it's set at Mirror not extended Desktop) and when I run System Preferences/Displays get the following. Sorry but all I can confirm is that adapter+cable combination should work ...
Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys?

  • Importing from Sony mini DVD?

Brand new iMac and I cant insert the mini DVD from Sony Handycam camcorder since iMac only takes standard size dvd. It appears as if there is no other plug-in option, eg, firewire or usb port. Any suggestions? The Sony model is dcr-dvd 305 ... should I burn files from small dvd to large one? Will I lose quality? Bought this computer for ease of use and already frustrated...thanks!

If your camera is several years old, it is most certainly Mpeg2. If your DVD will play in a DVD player, it is almost certainly MPEG2. The alternatives are AVCHD which is a fairly recent format for high definition cameras, and dv which is uncompressed, and probably not used on your dvd. If you can open your dvd in the finder, you may be able to right-click, get info, and find out for sure.
If you are interested in a new camera, there are a lot of choices. The simplest choice is a standard definition miniDV tape camera that connects with firewire. If you go HD, there are mpeg2 cameras and AVCHD cameras in tape, DVD, flash memory, and hard drive formats.
Personally, I like the flash memory AVCHD, but others like the easy archival capability of tape.
See this Apple document for compatible camcorders.

  • Can not upload video clips from mini dvd

When I try to upload video clips from mini DVD recorded on Sony Handycam it stats the files are read only.  I have tried finalized and un-finalized clips.

    Thank you for the reply.
Although what I posted in my post numbered 2 is interesting and useful information in the Premiere Elements ripping of VOBs from DVD-VIDEO, it is not answering your issue regarding a "read only" issue and did not target your specific "read only" message. Sorry about that.
The VOBs are typically read only files on the disc.
I have never run into a "read only" issue with regard to the Premiere Elements 10 Windows 7 64 bit Add Media/"DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive"/Video Importer. For that matter, not with any version of Premiere Elements with this particular feature.
When are you getting this message.
    a. When you click on DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive after Get Media
    b. When you click on Get Media in the Video Importer or other
Do you ever get a thumbnail for the VTS_01_1.VOB in the Video Importer? Is your burner drive recognized in the Source field of the Video Importer?
If you open and explore the DVD disc, go to the VTS_01_1.VOB in the VIDEO-TS Folder, go to the VOB's properties, can you remove
the mark next to "read only" and then have the Video Importer route work for you?
Also, if you copy the  VTS_01_1.VOB from the opened DVD disc and paste it to the computer desktop and remove the "read only" marking, can you then import
the VTS_01_1.VOB into Premiere Elements with its Get Media/Files and Folders?

  • Importing movies from a mini DVD made from Sony handycam DCR-DVD105

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD105. It records on to mini DVDs. I can play them with no problem into my DVD player, but when I put them into my external drive my computer recognizes it as a dvd but imovie dose not recognize it as a readable file. Do I need to convert this file to a different format? If so , with what program?
