Mini DVI - DVI adaptor

This may be a stupid question but...
I have to do a presentation and need to connect my MacBook to an external monitor for the first time. I was told that they have a fifteen pin video cable to plug into my computer. Is a Mini DVI - DVI adaptor what I need?? Also, do they have these at Best Buy?

Yes, you need an adapter. I was surprised that the Macbook comes with that strange little non-standard video connecor. I'll give Apple a criticism on this point, requiring me to both spend additional money for a converter dongle and have yet another thing in my presentation kit to get lost or accidentally left behind when I use my Macbook in a lecture hall.
I'd say, fine, go ahead and put the oddball connector on there, but also be presenter-friendly and give us a standard VGA connector. Every media-enabled lecture hall I've encountered at a university or hotel has a VGA cable hanging off the podium.
Be sure you get the correct adapter. There are three types: DVI, VGA, and S-video. They're all about $20 each from US suppliers. I'd recommend going to a computer store to be sure you get the one you want. Web sites often don't have adequate descriptions ofthe adapters to be sure you order the one you need. That's over-priced for what you get, but you have no choice.
This reminds me of the old powerbooks that had that weird mini-DIX connector instead of an RJ-45 Ethernet jack the rest of the civilized world was using.

Mini DVI - DVI to DVI - S-video adaptors

I want to connect my new Macbook with an older TV with SCART input.
I guessed a Mini-DVI<->DVI hooked up to a DVI<->S-video adaptor, finally connecting a s-video to Scart cable, would solve this.
I bought the two first adaptors from Apple, but the DVI:s wont fit!? They seem to be right looking at them, since one of them is male and the other one is female...

What can I expect from DVI-ADC Adaptor?

Hi,
I'm hoping to use my old 23" Apple Cinema Display (circa 2000) with a new quad. Due to the high cost of the DVI-ADC adaptor and the fact that it uses active circuitry, I'm curious to know if I can expect any loss of quality or responsiveness.
Also, will the USB ports still work and are there any other issues I need to know about?

The Apple dvi to ADC connector is powered. I have mine plugged into a Kensington MasterPiece along with my G5 and whatever else.
The ADC cable connector from the ADC Display connects to the Apple power module. Also on that cable is a usb connector that goes to the G5. So I had to route my keyboard to the ADC monitir because I connect a USB hub to the second USB port on the G5. The keyboard works fine as does the ADC monitor. I have the 20 inch Display.
The only issue I have which is not a biggie is in sleep mode. The ADC monitor sleeps without the glowing power light on. Once I touch the keyboard which is routed through the ADC monitor the monitor and computer awakes.

Connecting to a Sony TV via Mini DVI - DVI

I have an older iMac 20" Intel core duo with the ATI Radien 1600 graphics card and bought a Mini DVI - DVI adapter and a DVI-D cable to connect to my Sony KP57WV600 projection television using the DVI input on the back of the tv. Well, after hooking everything up, my iMac still doesn't notice the tv as a display (or anything for that matter). Yet when I turn the tv on or off with the comp on, the screen on the mac turns blue for a breif moment. So some kind of signal is being transfered to the computer but no go for the use of a display. I've asked people on a few sony tv forums but they say to ask a mac expert. I've read others that have connected this tv via DVI to their PCs but have yet to find anyone that has done so with a mac.
Please help me.

hey there xav_101 & welcome to Discussions
there's no way to directly connect 2 mini DV cams to your Mac & i'm not aware of any software that will do what you ask. if i were you i'd get an analog switcher w/ S-Video in & out, send output from switcher to the projectors using a distribution amp & also send to a VTR. the VTR could be a mini DV cam that converts analog to DV & send that into the Mac. i suppose you could use an analog>DVl device like a Canopus 110 instead of a cam to convert video out of the analog switcher to send to the Mac. i also use external mics(2 for an overall stereo mix of a musical performance) &/or take a board feed & a small audio mixer to get good, clean signal(no cam noise) into the cam/VTR/convertor.
when i've done a multi-cam shoot i've used 2-3 cams for shooting, an analog switcher & another cam to record & convert, then input to my Mac, or just record onto the non-shooting cam like a VTR, then dump that into my Mac later. mostly for short programs up to an hour. i do a bit of editing. maybe replace/add something 'cause i record onto my shooting cams as well, add credits then burn to DVD.
i know you didn't ask but anyway... for editing i've also just shot w/ as many cams as i need/have(up to 4) then dump footage from all cams into Final Cut--i've used both Express & Pro versions. it can take a little bit of tweaking to get everything lined up & synched, but that's part of what it does well, using multiple Audio & Video tracks.

Macbook mini-DVI - DVI - HDMI not working with My 32" Vizio

Okay so my Macbook mini-DVI - DVI - HDMI is not working with My 32" Vizio. I've connected an 18 pin plus one slot DVI to HDMI cable to my 32" Vizio HDTV, this cable is connected to my macbook via a Mini-DVI to DVI cable, this one has 24 pins plus one slot on the DVI side. My Vizio display is blue, no signal, it reads. I'm wondering if the reason it's not picking up the display is the lack of pins on the DVI to HDMI or because I dont have any display options aside from screen size and color on my display menu. BTW I hit the detect display button and nothing happened.... I know I just wrote alot here but hopefully someone will read it and come to the rescue. thanks

Using the mini DVI - DVI cable with HDMI LCD screen?

I bought the apple mini DVI - DVI connector to connect my imac to the back of my plasma. I have a 3 meter DVI cable to extend the mini DVI - DVI connector.
It worked fine but the plasma is not so good for my purposes as i am using the set up to display images.
I have just bought an LG LCD TV for a very good price.
However the LG LCD does not have DVI socket! It has HDMI.
Is there a cable available that is DVI (female) - HDMI?
And will this work in theory?
Any advise is much appreciated...

I got a LCD only has DVI-I port, while as u guys has noticed, the MBP only got DVI-I too. So, my first thought is to get another DVI-VGA adaptor. What i'm doing is to hook up the VGA port then plug each DVI port to LCD and MBP. Well, the problem comes out that MBP was able to indentify the Monitor but no image apears on Monitor. How can i solve this problem? Or do i need to buy any other accessaries to configure my MBP in order to make it work with the **** Monitor!

Right. You don't need a DVI-to-VGA adapter to connect DVI-to-DVI, obviously. The included DVI-to-VGA adapter is not meant to connect to the external display/projector, but merely to give you the proper connection to connect the VGA cable of the display/projector. I give a lot of presentations, everywhere I go there is a long VGA cable (at the podium, conference table, etc.); the short adapter is nice because I'd rather not carry a long cable with me...

Mini Displayport - DVI - HDMI 5V?

I kind of have an odd setup desire for an external display. I want to send video and audio to my entertainment unit from my MBP across the room. I already have audio sorted out (mini optical -> 30ft optical cable), but the video is a bit more difficult.
What I would like to do is have the Mini Displayport from my MBP go into my Mini DP -> DVI adapter (http://bit.ly/do7McJ). From there, a DVI to HDMI cable would take me to a HDMI over CAT5e/6 wall plate (http://bit.ly/C0bJg). This extender would then go to the TV.
The problem here is that the HDMI over Cat5e/6 extender needs the HDMI's 5V power source. Now, I have followed the pins all the way from HDMI (http://bit.ly/P2wWx - Pin 18) to DVI (http://bit.ly/TNJv5 - Pin 14?) to Mini Displayport (http://bit.ly/BCpof - Possibly pin 20)
Now I guess my real question is does anyone know if this will pass through 5V power: Mini DP -> DVI -> HDMI?

EDIT: My other option would be this (http://amzn.to/gV9PKH), however it is much more expensive and the single Cat5e/6 cable would probably reduce quality.

@Lambstechie - Now that I read into it, if the signal is converted, it can pass over 1 cat6 cable. What I was referring to is a cheaper converter, where an HDMI channel is connected straight to a Cat5/6 channel. And since HDMI 1.3 can work 100% perfect on 16 channels (just no ethernet, audio return, etc.) it seems like 16 channels over two 8-channel Cat5e/6 cables seems fit.
Also, I did not specify this earlier, but the total HDMI (not Cat5e/6) running distance will be under 10 feet, probably around 6 feet. Now when you say the loss of signal strength will happen around 15 ft of HDMI, does that include the distance running Cat5e/6 (approx. 30 ft), or just the HDMI length (6 ft).

Yellow screen on external TV Monitor via DVI-ADC Adaptor

I am using a 2008 17" MacBook Pro with a DVI-ADC Adaptor in order too use an external monitor, however whenever I set it up the 2nd external monitor has a yellow tint all over the screen.
Does anyone have any solutions to resolve this?

I don't think so... you need to look at either an iO HD or a Matrox MXO to take care of things I'd think. Might also be able to use an Intensity Pro Card (least expensive solution).

Mini-DisplayPort- DVI- ADC

A couple of my users still have old ADC Cinema Display monitors that are otherwise working correctly through DVI->ADC boxes. Has anyone had any luck chaining the MDP->DVI to the DVI->ADC connector to get this setup to work properly?

As far as I know, Apple's DVI->ADC adapter is the only one available. Here it is:

MacBook Pro restarts unexpectedly after removing mini displayport-DVI adapter

Hi all,
I did a clean install of Mavericks a little while back. Since then I have been noticing an issue with my Mid-2009 17" MacBook auto-restarting, and have reduced it when I remove my mini displayport-DVI adapter.
I usually work with my macbook closed, connected to a Dell 24" external monitor connected via DVI. When removing the adapter the macbook quite often goes to the grey screen telling me that the machine must force restart. It is becoming really frustrating.
Anyone know about this issue or found a workaround?

Concerns about DVI-VGA Adaptor

My TV only get DVI outlet, so i got a VGA-DVI adaptor the other day to work with the original DVI-VGA adaptor. What i've done was simply to connect the two VGA outlet and plug-in DVI outlet to its repective terminals. However,although my Pro was able to detect the TV and identify its model as well, the TV had no reaction whatsoever. What's wrong with that? Did i connect them in a right way?

To connect a DVI TV to a MacBook Pro, you need a DVI cable. DVI to VGA adapters block the digital video signals needed by the DVI port on the TV. Other signals do get through, which is how the computer identified the TV.

Does the new Mini support DVI DL?

The only way the new mini can support a DL-DVI display is through the Mini DisplayPort using the $99 Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI Adapter. The actual DVI port on the mini is single-link only.

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.
