Mini DVI to HDMI cables- Will I get audio on TV

If I hook up a mini DVI to HDMI adapter to an HDMI cable and run it from my MacBook to my plasma TV, can I get video & audio without using the optical digital audio port?

Hi ypw: Good question indeed. I checked my Plasma (LG) there doesn't appear to be a separate audio input associated with the HDMI inputs. I seem to recall some posts on here pointing to the separate audio solution, but had never tried to verify.
I might try with my Samsung plasma TV at home.
I thought that the general idea of using the DVI to HDMI converter was just to use it like one would use a typical monitor without audio. Since HDMI already has digital audio and typically comes from sources (tuners, converter boxes, video players) with audio, I don't think there would generally be an option to use analog audio, although it shouldn't be hard to include that option.
I've seen a few things like converters that take component video and analog audio as inputs, with a single HDMI output. I don't know if anyone anticipated blending a different audio source when the source is already HDMI.

  • Mini dvi to hdmi cable??where

i want to view the itunes visualizer on my 52" hd lcd sony bravia3. i would like to stay in the digital domain, thus use the hdmi connection. I searched everywhere. where can i get a mini dvi to hdmi cable. i saw mini dvi to dvi, is this the same connection minus the wire inside for audio?
imac G5 1.8mhz, and macbook intel core 2duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   wireless keyboard and mouse

what you want to do is get the apple mini div to dvi convertor and a dvi to hdmi cable from a good electical shop.
doing it this way for the video the screen shows the macbook as a box in the screen area, as in there will be a black box around the screen. this does this on my girlfriends lcd tv just a 27inch lg. though the tv only has auto detect for screen res. in my plasma, pioneer 46inch i get full screen but the top menu bar is only half showing, i havenot played with the settings on that yet.
for true digital or surround sound you are better to use an optical cable via the headphone jack. no point if u dont have a digital sound amp though

  • Is it possible to buy a mini-dvi to HDMI cable?

    Hi,
At the minute I'm pulling my hair out!!
Is it possible to buy a cable to connect my 20" Intel iMac via it's mini dvi socket at the back, to a large widescreen lcd tv via HDMI socket on the tv?
I have telephoned numerous companies on the net and they have never heard of a mini dvi socket (like the one on the back of the imac)!! Apple say I need a mini-dvi to dvi female cable but of course they don't sell them.
Guys what do I need, and where would I get it? I've already bought a HDMI-A Male to DVI-D Male cable but it doesn't fit the mac, is there an adaptor I can buy or do I need a new cable also?
    Help really appreciated.

I misunderstood you. I thought you had a link to a mini-DVI to HDMI cable. That's why I asked for the link.
You can use the adapter you linked to and get a DVI to HDMI cable locally and it will work for you.
Sorry about the confusion on my part.

  • Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

Can a MacBook (Early 2008) Support both sound and video to 1080p HDTV by Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

The mini dvi on the MacBook will only support video, in order to get audio you'll need to a cable from the sound out port to the sound in port on the TV.

  • Mini-DVI to HDMI cable?

I recently purchased the Mac Mini and I am having problems with the Mini-DVI to HDMI cable. I attempted to connect it to my new LG LCD TV and I am not receiving a signal from the Mini. How do I fix this problem?

    Hello Ratnik,
I'm having the same problem. Below is my question.

  • MacBook 2007 black 13" would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable send audio to the TV?

I attached my macbook (2007 black 13") to my TV with a mini-DVI to VGA; would a mini-DVI to HDMI cable allow my audio to play through the TV? Wanted to ask before I purchased it. Thanks.

No. The black MacBooks don't send audio through HDMI, so you'd need to connect the audio separately.

  • Mini DVI to HDMI Cable problems

So I bought the mini dvi to HDMI adapter off of Amazon so that I could connect my Macbook to my HDTV. I have seen other posts that said that this cable works but when I tried to connect my computer to my TV nothing came up. I tried restarting it and reconnecting all the cables but it still didn't work. The one time time it worked, just a blue background came up but nothing else showed up. Is it something wrong with the cable or is do I have to configure something with my computer?

My TV is a Samsung DLP Model # HL-85887W. I do know that it does allow a computer to be connected to it because I can connect an iBook to it. The iBook doesn't have a mini DVI port and has just a normal DVI one and I use a DVI to VGA adapter to connect it to the TV. Is it possible that the TV is programmed to the iBook and I have to do something with the computer and/or TV? Or is my mini DVI to HDMI adapter faulty?
    Thanks!

  • Mini-DVI to HDMI Cable Not Recognized...

    Hello all!
I just bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002LEY28O/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&p sc=1 from Amazon.com and it arrived today but when I plugged it into my iMac (Early 2008) literally nothing happens. I have tried power-cycling everything, starting up things one at a time, everything. (Searched the internet to!) Here's the specs of my stuff:
    iMac (Early 2008):
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    ATI Radeon 2400
    2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    1 mini-DVI output port
    ||
I am currently staying in a hotel so I do not have all of my usually electronics but I have tested it on an LG HDTV and a ViewSonic HD computer monitor and both do not work, it just display "no signal" and the iMac doesn't know that anything is different, the blue screen that is supposed to fade simply doesn't and under the "display" section there isn't an "arrangement" tab and clicking "detect displays" just freezes my computer (cannot move mouse) for 1-2 seconds. I ruled out the HDMI cable that I have by using it with my Xbox One and it works fine. Any suggestions?
    Thanks Everyone!
Also, you do not have to explain it to me like I'm 5. I am well capable of making my way around a computer.

  • No sound on TV with mini DVI to HDMI cable.  Macbook, white, 2008-9 13"

Picture is fine, mirroring turned on, using mini dvi converter into HDMI on a new Samsung flat screen.  Want to avoid using additional cable from earhone plug to RCA plug in TV.  Thanks

Thanks for the prompt reply;  it saved me going through 16,000 permutations for nought.  BTW, although it seemed to be working well yesterday, today the computer is failing to load new sites, etc. when the DIVI is plugged in, and proceeds fine when unplugged.  Also, when I plug in the DVI, the screen image on the computer and tv flickers between black and then blue screens before the image stabilizes.  My TV and internet are both on Comcast cable, if that makes a difference.  Thanks for you help;  I wish the folks who sold lme the cable knew as much.  Also, no one seemed to know that you have to turn on the "mirroring" function for it to work at all.

  • Queries on Macbook to Sony Bravia TV using a MINI DVI TO HDMI cable

Write, im probs going to get told to read up or research before posting, but I've connected up my Macbook (late 2009) to my TV using above said cable, and it works fine, great infact, but my problem is, if i drag say iplayer to my tv and watch a program in full screen, when i click on my macbook screen, it reverts to normal playback.
Is there a setting to get around this?? Ive tried playing with settings but im new to Macs and still have tings to learn! I've also turned on side by side not mirror.
Also, I've read about closed displays, but when i shut mine, it turns off, and I've clicked the lin in a previous post about this subject but it only talks about wireless keyboard/mouse working while closed...
    Cheers

When you try to use the MacBook in clamshell mode you need an external USB keyboard & mouse. When you close the lid the MacBook goes to sleep and you need to strike a key on the keyboard to wake it up.
That's why the previous talked about wireless keyboard/mouse working while closed.

  • Switched from DVI to HDMI, I can't get audio over analog! [SOLVED]

I want to use my onboard audio instead of the HDMI ATI audio (I'm using catalyst if that helps), but it seems to have all but disappeared as an option. For example, KMix now only allows me to switch mixers between my webcam mic, HDA ATI SB, and HD-Audio Generic (S/PDIF). In the Phonon audio setup, if I test hw:1,0, sound comes out of my headphones like it should, so I put it on top of each list in Playback, and HDA ATI SB below that since that works too... but why, my headphones are hooked up to the motherboard, not the graphics card? I'm just so confused right now.
EDIT: Solution is to set up the default sound card as specified here.

  • Intel Mini: DVI to HDMI = Video + Audio over the same cable?

    Hello,
I have a friend who has a 1.83GHz Mac Mini. He wants to hook it up to his TV, an Hitachi L42VP01U, which has a couple of HDMI inputs, from what i can make out.
Question is, if i get a DVI to HDMI cable, does that carry Audio as well as video?
    Many thanks,
    c

    Hi Col Kav,
    sorry, but no.
DVI only carries video signals but no audio signals.
So, your friend has to use an audio-connection from his Mini to his TV.

  • "Mini DVI to HDMI" or "Mini DVI to VGA" to go to Samsung LN32B460 HDTV?

I recently purchased a "DOA"/defective "Mini DVI to HDMI" converter off of ebay, and the company is making me spend the $10 to return it to China - which I'm not doing (I only paid $10 for it in the first place).
I am wondering if I should buy another one, from a more reliable seller of course, or if I should buy the "Mini DVI to VGA" instead?
I don't play games, so it would be mainly for playing movies and browsing the web. My display is a 32" Samsung 720p (Model LN32B460). It is has a native resolution of 1360x768, 60Hz refresh.
Will I see a quality difference for the basic stuff that I am doing that I should get the "Mini DVI to HDMI" or will the "Mini DVI to VGA" be enough?
    Thanks!

I'm attempting to connect my MB to a plasma 50 inch Panasonic TV, and am about to purchase the necessary cables from www.monoprice.com.
I've discovered so far that the HDMI connection directly between the MB and the TV (using the appropriate mini DVI adapter of course - product # 4852 at monochrome.com and an Apple HDMI cable which I'll return to get a better price at monochrome) transmits only video/pictures but not audio.
So far, an old, short RCA (red/white) 2-way audio test cable (again using the appropriate adapter to connect to the headphone jack on the MB) does not transmit audio directly to the TV.
    1) Could audio be transmitted from the MB to the TV using a "Coax (RCA) to Optical Toslink Digital Audio Converter" (product ID # 2947 at www.monochrome.com) to connect directly to the TV (in which case, what digital audio cable would I need to connect the converter to the TV)? And if so, would it be stereo or mono?
    OR...
    2) Should I wait until I get my Onkyo surround sound system (later this week) to see if the RCA cable will transmit directly from the MB to the sound system?
    Thanks.

  • I am trying to connect my Macbook 4.1 Black to my Samsung UE50F6400 using a mini DVI to HDMI adaptor

I bought the UE50F6400 samrt TV. It has 4 HDMI ports. HDMI 4 is HDMI/DVI, HDMI 3 is normal, HDMI 2 is (ARC) and HDMI 1 is (STB).
reading the connection diagram it shows Laptops are to be plugged in to HDMI 4 (HDMI/DVI). But when I plug a HDMI cable in and the other end to the adpator while the mini DVI connection is in the Macbook DVI port. All that happens is the Macbook (4.1 black) screen just flashes blue. This is the same for HDMI 1 & 3, however when it is in HDMI 2 (ARC) the Macbook screen displays. I tried switching TV of and rstarting macbook but still no display on TV. I tried changing display setting such as resolutions and refresh rate on the display preferences and still no display on TV.
    Please can someone help?
I am think I may have to return the Mini DVI to HDMI cable and get a HDMI to DVI > DVI to mini DVI and do it that way, means buying 2 adaptors.

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

  • Mini DVI to HDMI display help?

I have a MBP and I bought the Mini DVI to HDMI cable and it looks great on my HDTV. But I am wondering if there is a way to use the TV as a monitor and still use the laptop at the closed position?

With a MacBook or MacBook Pro, if you connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, you can close the screen (which will put the system to sleep) and then wake it up by pressing a key and use the external monitor as the primary monitor. It should work with your HDTV as well.
