Mini DVI to HDMI help please

ok so I bought the two cables to connect my macbook to my HD TV but I have a few problems. First when I switch the TV over to HDMI it shows my computer screen but I have to drag whatever I want all the way to the right of my screen, off my computer and then it starts to show up on the TV, its like I made my computer screen super wide by adding the TV's surface to the right of my computer. Also I'm not good at this kind of stuff but how can I get the sound to my TV, the DVI to HDMI doesn't seem to yield sound and I also tried running my headphone out on my macbook to the PC audio in on my TV but nothing happened either.

Anyway:

Go to the Displays system preference, go to the Arrangement pane, and click the checkbox that says "mirror displays.
the DVI to HDMI doesn't seem to yield sound
Correct. DVI does not carry sound. Even though you're using an adapter to convert to an HDMI connector, there won't be any sound so you need to use separate audio cables.
I also tried running my headphone out on my macbook to the PC audio in on my TV but nothing happened either.
Check your TV's documentation. Not many TVs can use a separate audio input when the TV is set to an HDMI connection. They usually expect the audio through the HDMI. If yours is that way, there's probably no way to get audio into the TV when using the HDMI input. You may need to choose another input type or connect the audio to a stereo system.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you’re running 10.7 Lion). When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. Mini DVI to HDMI display help?

I have a MBP and I bought the Mini DVI to HDMI cable and it looks great on my HDTV. But I am wondering if there is a way to use the TV as a monitor and still use the laptop at the closed position?

With a MacBook or MacBook Pro, if you connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, you can close the screen (which will put the system to sleep) and then wake it up by pressing a key and use the external monitor as the primary monitor. It should work with your HDTV as well.

Cannot Connect Imac 24" via mini dvi to HDMi adapter cable to Sony Bravia 3

Hello Everyone,
I'm having the worst time in trying to connect the following:
1. Imac 24" 3.06 dual with dvi connection
2. Mini dvi to HDMI adapter (this mac with this connection was produced only for a short while!).
3. 10' (foor) HDMI wire
3. Sony Bravia 32" model KDL32L-5000 with 3 HDML connections
i.When I wire everything up, I keep getting"no signal" on my Sony Bravia TV.
ii. It doesn't matter whether I connect the HDMI wire to HDMI 1,2, or 3 on my Sony
iii. On my Imac Hard Drive>>Applications>>System Preferences>>Displays
all I get is a list of different resolutions. There is no mention or mirrors etc.
Nothing happens when I press "Gather Windows" or Detect Displays"
Can someone out there please help!!!!!
Can you also give any solution in very simple and small detailed steps!

Majortrout, there is a major disconnect going on here.
1. You are showing an Ebay link with a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter.
2. You report that you have an Early '09 24" iMac.
3. That iMac does not have a mini-DVI port. That iMac has a mini-DispayPort.
4. You need a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
It is physically impossible to attach the adapter to which you link at Ebay to your iMac. So you need to take a step back and figure out what you really have; which iMac, which adapter, etc.

Mini dvi to hdmi adapter

I have ordered a mini dvi to female hdmi adapter for my MacBook...and hdmi cable to run to my Pansonic HDTV; so I can watch movies I rent from iTunes.
Do I need an additional cable for sound? If so, please inform what I need? I do have HDMI Audio input wht/red connections on back of TV. I just don't know what to buy if I need an additional long cable for audio?
Can I set this up to have video and audio connection with one cable?

...I am having trouble connecting it to my 42" Panasonic Plasma 720p. I purchased a mini dvi - hdmi adapter and plugged everything in and just got a blue screen on the macbook and nothing on the tv. I am sure that the right input was used on the TV. I also tried using the same setup on my other 32" lcd, but had the same problem with the macbook. What am i doing wrong. Should I try a mini dvi to s-video and use that or would the picture suffer. Since my tv has the hdmi, I would really like to use it...I called apple, but the referred me to the forum or pay them $50 to try and figure out the problem. The tv has 2 hdmi inputs and I tried both of them. It also has s-video and component inputs, but no vga...Please Help...

I am having an identical problem. Unfortunately, I cannot quite follow the syntax of the response to the original post. I have a Macbook 2.1 and I am trying to hook up to an LG 32LH20 TV. I got the Mini DVI to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable at eh Apple store. Connected the HDMI cable to the HDMI IN jack on the back of the TV. They also sold me an audio cable with the 3.5mm jack on one end and the red/white AV plugs on the other end.
Once all of the cables are hooked up, it doesn't work...exactly. If I switch the TV input to 'Component', I can get the audio of whatever is running on the Macbook, like from a Netflix movie. As for video, the only thing I get is when I switch the TV input to 'HDMI'. Then, all I get is the generic Apple purple sky. The only things that I can get in the screen of the TV that also shows up on the Macbook are when I open up things like the System Preferences menu. No browsers or other apps.
Can somebody please help me further?

Mini dvi to hdmi problems - displaying my screen on my TV

so I have an Toshiba LCD TV with an HDMI port and I'd like to be able to play videos from the internet on my TV. I have a Macbook with a mini-dvi port so I bought a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter from Amazon and an HDMI cable from Best Buy. I also have an RCA cable for audio (which works fine). After hooking up the laptop to the TV using a multitude of combinations and restarts, all I get is a flickering blue screen on my laptop when I change the TV's input to HDMI. Nothing happens on my TV screen. Any ideas on what I should do to get video? I've read I need to mirror the display but the Arrangements tab doesn't show up on the Display menu so that option doesn't seem to be available. I've messed with resolution and numerous other things and have hit a wall.

I have the same setup. Try messing around with the cable, it might not be properly connecting. Mine is pretty finicky and can lose connection if it's not sitting "just right". Also, just in case, click on "gather windows" on the bottom of the display settings dialog box. Then check to see if the Toshiba settings dialog box shows up. If it does, that means the TV is actually connected but the resolution settings have not be properly set yet. So if "gathering windows" gets you your TV's settings window, change the resolution to "1080p" if it offers that. If it doesn't, just go through all of the resolutions until you find one that works/works best.

Mini dvi to HDMI with Vizio VW37L does not work

I just purchased a mini dvi to HDMI connector and tried to use my 37 inch Vizio VW37L as a display. It didn't work. Then I read some reviews that MacBook doesn't have a preset resolution that would work with Vizio, nor does MacBook have a way to make a custom resolution.
I was saw some advice to download a program called SwitchResX and I did. This program caused my screen to go gray and I could not find a solution so I had to restore my MacBook.
I want to use my TV as a display via HDMI. How can I do this? FYI I will not put SwitchResX back on my Macbook. It took forever to restore last night being that it is two years old and all the security updates that I don't have on boot disk right now take forever to download and install.
Advice please. Also, would dvi to VGA be that bad? I guess I'm just spoiled with digital video that I didn't even think about trying analog.

I may be able to offer some input as I was successful in connecting my macbook to my HD Samsung Plasma TODAY. I bought the Apple mini-dvi to DVI adapter and the Dynex DVI-D to HDMI Cable. I'm not sure which macbook you have, but you'll have to determine if you'll need the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter or the Apple mini display port connection. So if you have a mini display port, substitute what I have below w/mini display port.
1) Put the apple mini-dvi to DVI adapter in the port on your macbook.
2) Attach the Dynex DVI-D to HDMI to the apple mini DVI to DVI adapter.
3) Attach the opposing end of the Dynex DVI-D to HDMI cord to the TV. On my set it is the HDMI1 (DV1) slot.
4) Check your TV manual to see what the display settings need to be on the computer. In my case it was 640x480.

I am trying to connect my Macbook 4.1 Black to my Samsung UE50F6400 using a mini DVI to HDMI adaptor

I bought the UE50F6400 samrt TV. It has 4 HDMI ports. HDMI 4 is HDMI/DVI, HDMI 3 is normal, HDMI 2 is (ARC) and HDMI 1 is (STB).
reading the connection diagram it shows Laptops are to be plugged in to HDMI 4 (HDMI/DVI). But when I plug a HDMI cable in and the other end to the adpator while the mini DVI connection is in the Macbook DVI port. All that happens is the Macbook (4.1 black) screen just flashes blue. This is the same for HDMI 1 & 3, however when it is in HDMI 2 (ARC) the Macbook screen displays. I tried switching TV of and rstarting macbook but still no display on TV. I tried changing display setting such as resolutions and refresh rate on the display preferences and still no display on TV.
Please can someone help?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

Mini DVI to HDMI hookup not working.

I just purchased the Mini DVI to HDMI hookup for my MacBook Pro. I plugged it into the HDMI port in my Samsung TV and the blue screen appeared onto my Mac for a second and then it went back to normal. My TV isn't detecting the MacBook and the Mac is back to normal. Is there something in the set up/ settings that needs to be done? I'm REALLY hoping and praying for an easy fix to my silly problem.

I tried it both with Mirroring checked and unchecked. I'm also not sure what my resolution should be set at so that could have something to do with it.
As far as I can tell, the MacBook is detecting the TV since the blue screen pops up and disappears once it's plugged in. It seems to be the Samsung TV that's not detecting the MacBook.

My macbook pro no longer connects to my TV with the mini dvi to hdmi adapter. It was working fine now I cant get it to output to the Tv. Any ideas?

My Macbook pro no longer outputs to my vizio led tv. It was working fine now I cant get any picture. It just says no signal. It is not the hdmi or the adapter because it works fine with my other tv. Since you say that the same connectors work on your other TV is suggests that the fault is not in the connectors but your Vizio TV. I would check the settings on the Vizio TV. Verify that is is set to receive HDMI input. Perhaps you or some one else has inadvertently changed them. Pressing the wrong buttons on a remote control device can do that. (I am assuming no changes were made in SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAYS)

Mini dvi to hdmi connection issues

Trying to set up my 2007 imac to my Panasonic tv. I have a mini dvi to hdmi converter and an hdmi cable connected to my tv. I only get a blank screen on the tv, but it seems that the computer is connecting. When i go into sytem preferences for display monitoring I get the second screen saying Panasonic and set up which reolution I want but theres no way to detect the display. Any help getting picture would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you have the correct HDMI input selected in the TVs menu...?
Aditionally, there might also be settings for connecting a PC to the TV.
