Mini-DVI to mini-Display port connector?

Is Apple releasing a cable that connects mini-dvi to mini-display port?
My company today told me that I will get a new Macbook Pro with a mini-display port built in, but I ordered a cinema display directly from Apple.
I plan to connect the new Macbook Pro to the new cinema display (so I can watch all my TV shows in GLORIOUS HD AND IN C.O.L.O.U.R) but I also want to connect my old black Macbook, and my Mac Pro to the new cinema display. (so other members in my family can use the display on their own macbooks when I'm not using it)
This cable will REALLY help, otherwise, I feel like I just bought a new display for myself.

Apple just today has announced free licensing of their MDP technology so that third party companies can incorporate it themselves as well as build things like adapters. I have been saying since this whole controversy started, that Apple would never change their entire product line to MDP and effectively orphan an entire legacy group from upgrading with Apple products, especially in this economy. Mini Display Port connector for 2008 Mac Pro

I have a 2008 Mac Pro (with 2 x DVI connectors). Is there a graphics card with Mini Display Port connector that I can just wack in and use a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display?

Which 27" display? Current Thunderbolt model or previous mini-displayport model?
For mini-displayport connections look at the apple versions of the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5780 video cards. Both have two mini-displayports and a dual link dvi port. The 5770 requires one aux poer adapter cable while the 5780 requires two.
At present there is no way to connect the current 27" TB display to mini-displayport. Only to another TB display or the 2011 computer's apple makes.

I have recently I have brought a new macbook which has a mini DVI port to connect external monitors and I also work with IMac which have a mini display port attached. I would like to know if there is a way of attaching the macbook (with mini dvi) to an IMac (with a mini display port) to use as an external monitor.
I ask this because I have also brought a mini DVI to mini DVI cable to then find that this does not fit in to the IMacs which I would like to use as a monitor.

right now, there aren't any options to do this with the mini DVI port. might be able to try using the DVI adapters & then connect them with a DVI cable but I have my doubts it will work as the adapters only output, pretty sure they won't take input.

What model (yeasr) and size (17", 20". 22" ...) display. Depending on the model, it may have ADC, singlre-link DVI, dual-link DVI, or Mini DisplayPort connectors.

Closing MacBook lid w/ mini-DVI to second display turns off second display

I hooked up a MacBook to another display via the mini-DVI to DVI adapter but, when I close the lid of the MacBook, the other display goes off. The display settings are set to mirror and this doesn't happen with my MacBook Pro. With my MacBook Pro, I can close the lid and continue working with the monitor connected directly to the DVI port without issues. Anyone have any suggestions as, to use my MacBook this way, both displays remain lit which is kind of pointless. Thanks in advance,

It is puts the Macbook to sleep when you close the lid.
All you need to do is press a key on the external keyboard or mouse and it will wake up the Macbook with the lid closed. If you are using bluetooth for your external devices, ensure that the "wake from sleep" option is enabled under Bluetooth setting in System Preferences.

Macbook mini-dvi to vga display resolution issue

Hi,
I'm connecting my 13in first generation macbook to an external LCD display. It's an ACER AL2216W. I'm running latest Snow Leopard.
I could always just click 'detect displays' and it would figure out what kind of monitor I had and I would be off and running at the native 1600x1050.
Now for some reason when I click detect displays, it only shows the laptop native resolutions. There is no 1600x1050 in the resolution list and instead of saying "ACER AL2216W" at the top of the display preferences, it just says "Display"
I've tried rebooting, plugging in and and out my monitor cable to the macbook and a variety of other things but to no avail. I'm forced to use 1024x768 right as it is the only resolution that displays correctly on my monitor.   Any ideas on how to get back the detect display working and have 1600x1050 resolution again?

I have a 40 lcd tv and have my macbook hookuped to it using the mini display port to vga and it looks really good, but i only use it for watching movies. Dedicated monitors are still better for reading text or playing games

Mini DVI to HDMI display help?

I have a MBP and I bought the Mini DVI to HDMI cable and it looks great on my HDTV. But I am wondering if there is a way to use the TV as a monitor and still use the laptop at the closed position?

With a MacBook or MacBook Pro, if you connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, you can close the screen (which will put the system to sleep) and then wake it up by pressing a key and use the external monitor as the primary monitor. It should work with your HDTV as well.

Mini DVI to Mini DisplayPort

So... I'm about to freak out here.
I've been trying to find a way to get my OLD MacBook to play nice with my NEW TV.
The old Macbook has the Mini DVI connector for displays. The new TV has HDMI.
The old Mini DVI doesn't support audio. So I managed to find the only adapter on the market to cover Apple's lack of support and foresight, but as it turns out, it's for the Mini DisplayPort. Nothing I can find will get me from the MacBook to HDMI with audio.
Am I SOL? The MacBook is old, and has a non-functioning trackpad, and thus is not useful for much, nor is it valuable for resale.
Do I let go? If I do, I won't likely replace it with an Apple product.
Or, am I missing something that will make this work? [For less than $80 in adapteration]

When you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs.
The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual though to see if it might have audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.

Have a 2008 iMac 24". How to convert from mini-DVI to mini-displayport?

It takes the TOSLINK audio output and the minidisplayport output and combines it into HDMI to use in a home theater. However, I just found out that older iMacs (2008) have mini-DVI out, NOT mini-displayport. I've searched high and low and I cannot find a cable/adapter combination that will convert this for me so I can use it on my 2008 iMac. Any suggestions?
IDEALLY it would be a male mini-dvi to female mini-displayport. This doesn't seem to exist.

but it is expensive. Going from DVI to DisplayPort is not simply a matter of changing the shape of the connector. And you would need a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter to connect to this device.

BUT tonight I found out it is NOT the right thing. The adapter I need would be "Mini DisplayPort to DVI (or VGA)"
I found the full sized DVI ♂ and ♀ ends of the adapter and projector cord I do have don't "mate" right either. The pins have a slightly different arrangement!
I just want to warn anyone who might stumble in the same place. I'm off to my local Apple Store to return the adapter for one that will fit one of my projector inputs with a Mini DisplayPort plug on the other end.

Macbook receiving AM radio via display port connector'

A few weeks ago, I discovered that when my Mini Displayport to VGA connector was plugged in, I heard a buzz through my speakers. It didnt bother me that much, so I just dealt with it. However, today I was plugging my external speakers in, and when the connector was about half way in.. I started to hear audio that I knew wasnt on my computer. Turns out it was commentary on a college basketball game. I started to listen some more, and discovered that it was 1530am. Seeing as I use just a standard set of 5.1 computer speakers... I found this to be extremely odd, so I figured id share this with everyone. Any ideas why this may happen?

Problems like that can be tricky to track down and eliminate but this type of device often provides a solution without ever finding out for sure the root of the problem:

Depending on what type of connections are on the speakers you own, you may need to purchase one or more simple cable converters that go from the RCA-type plug interface of the linked device to a normal, 3.5 mm stereo mini-point connection.
Another thing that might work would be a simple choke appled to the audio cable between the Mac and the speakers:

Female Mini Display Port Adapter - Connect Monitor to Non Mini Display Port

Anyone know of a Female Mini Display Port Adapter, so I can connect the 24 LED Cinema Display to a computer that has DVI connector? Or hook the monitor up to a KVM, so I can use the monitor with multiple computers?
I know Apple doesn't make these, but does a third party?
Monoline appears to be coming out with adapters to hook a mini display port computer to DVI and HDMI, but not a mini display port monitor to DVI or HDMI.

No. You may be thinking of Mini DVI. Mini DisplayPort is a smaller verion of DisplayPort, which is different from DVI and HDMI.

HDMI, display port, mini display port AND DVI are all capable of being 'converted' from one to another.
It is easy to make a Mini DisplayPort (card) to DVI (display) adapter because a DisplayPort card can be set to generate DVI signals. (Dual-link DVI is a bit more complicated since the adapter must sepatate the clock and data.). A DVI card cannot generate DisplayPort signals, so an adapter for a DisplayPort display with a DVI card would be a lot more complicated.
The ONLY thing that you would LOSE in a DVI to display port conversion is an audio signal.
HDMI is DVI video plus digital audio. DisplayPort does not use DVI video.

They can't make a cheap adapter, but they could have added a DVI port to the display.

Blue Screen and Mini Display Port Screens

I have a Macbook Air 2011 model, it will connect fine to any Thunderbolt displays but as soon as it's plugged into a screen with the mini display port connector, the laptop will get stuck on a blue screen until it's disconnected, and as far as I know it should be compatible with both types
Usually a PRAM reset will resolve it, but it hasn't and attempted an SMC reset plus a Firmware update, no change either
What else can I try?

If you experience a black screen, or otherwise have an unusable picture after changing to some resolutions, try resetting the NVRAM first.
If you continue to experience the issue, startup the Mac in Safe Mode. Delete the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist file and restart the Mac.
If the problem persists you may have a bad adaptor.
