Mini DVI to S-video display problem

I connect my macbook to a plasma TV using mini DVI to S-video adapter so I can give keynote presentations. All of a sudden, having not changed any settings, the plasma display went to black & white while my macbook's display remains in color. I have checked with two different s-video cables and with another TV, as well as trying to change the color display in my system preferences, but after several hours have given up. Anyone else have this problem or have any thoughts on how to alleviate it? Thanks
Hungus

A wire may have broken inside the mini DVI to S-video adapter. S-video uses one wire for the brightness, and one for the color information. If the color wire breaks you will get a black and white picture. Until Apple replaces the adapter, you could use the composite video output, but the picture will not be as sharp.

  • Mini DVI to Hdmi Adaptor display problem

Hi I just got a new miniDvi to Hdmi adaptor and an HDMI cord so i can dual monitor for video production and what not. Problem is when i hook it up to BOTH my 720p HDTVs the mac screen goes blue for a few seconds as if its going to connect to the display, but then goes back to normal, the TV says no signal, and in the display settings it wont detect the other monitor. I have the 2008 model of the 20" imac with mac os 10.5.8. Does the minidvi to hdmi adaptor nit work right? do i have to go Minidvi to DVI adaptor to a DVI HDMI cord?
    Thanks for any help

Really i did not know that, the 2 TVs i tried were an Insignia and a Samsung. I dont think its a bad adapter because it understands that theres a possible signal going out. OH the thing about the tvs not accepting computers through hdmi is not true because i have a PC laptop with an hdmi port and i was able to hook it up to the samsung just fine. any other suggestions?

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • I am attempting to plug my mac into my tv. I am using the mini dvi to s video adapter. When I plug it in, the display goes all wonky and becomes stretched and enlarged.

When I attempt to connect my mac to the monitor using a mini dvi to s video adapter the display becomes enlarged and stretched. I cannot seem to fix this using the system preferences or the quick keys that allow you to zoom in on the display. Any suggestions?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • Problems with Mini DVI to S-Video/RCA adapter

    Hello
I've got a mac mini and I want to pass its image to a television (note: this television doesn't have HDMI)
I've bought the Mini DVI to S-Video/RCA adapter, but when I connect it to my TV nothing appers (except some gray lines, which means the signal is reaching the TV, but no image)
    Thanks

That connector may not be compatible with an Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini like yours.

  • Mini DVI to S-video and composite giving complete distorted output!!

I tried to hook up my 20" Sony Trinitron either through S-video or composite to the powerbook without any success. I got completely distorted picutre. I have tried all the video resolution setting that is available on the Displays reference window with the same result. Does anybody out there run into this problem at all.

I have a 12" PowerBook 1.5ghz and had the same problem with garbled video today. When I plugged in the Mini-DVI > Composite/S-Video adapter the PowerBook would consistently think it was attached to an ordinary VGA monitor, and could not sync with the television. This caused a B&W, warped, split in half picture.
I took the adapter back to the Apple store, plugged it into one of their demo units, and saw it behaved the same way. They gave me a replacement and everything has been fine since.

  • Mini-DVI to S-Video Adapter doesn't work

Hi, I am using the Mini-DVI to S-Video adapter from apple to connect my macbook to the TV. But the only thing I get is a grey flickering picture on my TV. When I click on the monitor-button I can see that my macbook detects only a monitor (but not a TV) in addition to the macbook-LCD-display. I tried all different resolutions, but needless to say it doesn't work.
Can the adapter be broken, or is there a problem with the macbook?
Macbook white 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

my macbook detects only a monitor (but not a TV) in addition to the macbook-LCD-display
If you connect the Mini-DVI to S-Video adapter, the monitor button on the menubar should show resolutions for Color LCD in one section and NTSC/PAL in the other.
A grey flickering picture is indicative of picking the wrong standard-PAL vs. NTSC.

  • Mini-DVI to S-video adapter and no colour on TV screen

I just purchased a mini-DVI to S-video adapter for my MacBook. I want to connect it to my TV through my DVD/Video player.
I do get a nice picture on the TV and I can manage it in the screen settings panel, BUT the TV-screen doesn't show any colour, just black and white. Why?
I've tried several settings in the Preferences panel, but no luck. What to do?

The cable is brand new and I've checked it with a mulitmeter. It's OK.
I've also heard that this is a fairly common problem with S-video and I got a tip to try the composite video instead. It worked beautifully, so now I've got nice and crisp video in full colour on my TV!

  • Mini-DVI to s-video: black bar on left side

    Hi,
When outputting video through "the mini-DVI to s-video adapter" i have a black bar on the left side of my television.
It seems like the 1024*768 resolution is not able to completely fit the 4:3 area of my television (the image is to small).
    any ideas?
    thanks!

I'm absolutely sure everything is displaying and that the image is not deformed in any way.
So my conclusion is that the image is just smaller (in every dimension) than it should be and than it was before.
I will try a lower resolution later today.
thanks for your help and interest!

  • Mini DVI to S-Video B&W only!!

I bought a Mini DVI to S-Video adapter and a S-video to RCA cable to hook my MacBook up to my TV, but when I plug it in I can only see it in Black and White. I checked System Prefs>Displays and tried out several different profiles, to no avail. FWIW the audio seems to be fine.
What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

In my experience when you try to connect an s-video source to a TV you need the TV to be able to accept s-video signals or it does come out black and white.
One of my televisions has front inputs which consist of one s-video plus the standard three phonos. If i dont tell the tv its an s-video cable the image is black and white.I had the same kinda thing with an older tv when using a scart convertor which had s-video input. I had to use the correct scart socket which was the one that supported s-video and then tell the tv it was s-video by switching to AV2/S instead of just AV2.

  • Dynex mini-DVI to S-video adapter

I bought a Dynex mini-DVI to S-video adapter with my Macbook and I just tried to use it to plug into my projector via S-video. The resolution of my screen dropped to 800x600 but otherwise nothing happened. I even followed the Max OS X help information and turned on the computer with the adapter and cable plugged in and it still didn't display on the projector. I went to the display settings in system preferences and asked it to detect displays but I don't think it changed anything either. It seems the Dynex website is rather sparse on documentation and support. Any ideas? It'd be greatly appreciated!

I've tried pretty much everything with the same mini-DVI adapter made by Dynex.. if anyone can help it would be much appreciated!

  • Conecting Mini DVI to HDMI Video Cable with my mac book pro

Hi. I just bought Mini DVI to HDMI Video Cable to connect my mac book pro to my HD TV. I connected the cables and put my TV on HDMI input. On the TV it appears the Snow Leopard Background but I can't see my desktop or the icons. What should I do to view my mac book pro on the Tv? Thanks!

    Hi y3p3v3,
On the TV it appears the Snow Leopard Background but I can't see my desktop or the icons. What should I do to view my mac book pro on the Tv? Thanks!
You've got it connected, and you're viewing it already! Connect it up again, and try dragging a window either to the left, or right, off your built-in screen. You'll find that it appears on your TV!
What you're doing is running the computer in "extended desktop" mode. That means that your TV screen is available to put things on, but won't show your menu bar, dock, or icons. Those remain on the "primary screen" which remains your MBP's built-in display.
When the TV is plugged in, go to System Preferences --> Displays
The main System Preferences window will remain on your MBP's screen, but a second one should appear on the TV as well. If you go to the one on your MBP's screen, and click the "Arrangement" tab, you'll see two screens shown in the diagram. One will have a menubar. That's your MBPs screen. You can drag the menubar to the other screen to change the primary screen to the TV.
OR, you can just click "Mirror Displays" and your TV will show the exact same picture as your MBP display. This option is the simplest and will accomplish what you want, I think.
If you have any other questions, or if you need any clarification, feel free to ask!

  • TX2 - 1370 US VIDEO DISPLAY problem ....

hello friends i am new to this forum.. i brought a new HP TX 2 - 1370 US laptop from amazon site in USA and now using it in INDIA  since 10 months ... it came  with AMD processor and ATI raedon HD 4200 graphics . it came with 4 GB DDR 2 ram .
it worked fine for 11 months .. i started using the laptop for more time these days around 10 hrs a day or so . yesterday morning when   switched on the laptop  the screen is blank and only quick launch buttons are blinking and caps lock buton .. i connected the laptop to a working monitor but no response .
i took it to service centre in INDIA and they changed the RAM and exchanged the slots of RAMS but it didnt work ..and they said there is no warrenty for that models in INDIA ..
i finally went to 3rd party repair shop and they said its due to defective video chip .. it needs to be replaced and they are getting many laptops with similar  problems like this ...
is there any way to fix that ? wat am i to do so that i dont ge t these type of problems again ?
i am also using cooling fan for laptop an i am working in AC room with room temp set to 25degrees ...
lease can anyone tell me wat to do  ?
shall i get it repaired by 3rd party as i cant send it to USA again .. are the video chips in this model really defective ?
thank you all ..........waiting for your responses....

    Hello!
I just wanted to share my video display problem. Mine is a tx2-1375dx.  When is turned ON cold, it shows rubbish, like the sequence shown next. The problem persists using an external video display or projector.
Then, instead, I warm up the back of the display with a hair dryer, not too much, but that feel the heat has transfered inside, the Tx2 runs just fine. I also keep a fan cooling pad underneath instead of having the inner fan run 24x7.
So I guess the video chip has a thermal sensor that is being signaled when the display is warm and then runs fine. This would mean part of the functionality of the video chip may have been compromised by heat on the motherboard.
Too bad a promising machine was so poorly designed inside. It becomes too hot to put on your lap, so is no longer a "laptop".
So now, my other thing on my backpack to work is a hair dryer!
    Greetings from Central America!

  • Mini dvi to Component Video adapter !

    Help !
Where Can I Find "mini dvi to Component Video adapter" ?
    Help !

"there is no such thing in apple store"
    I MAID,
Begging your pardon, but I just tried the above linked Search Results, and what you seek is apparently on the list, as the search was performed exactly as you specified. You can read the description of the various items for sale and tell us what is different about the one that you need. That way we can perform a new search for you, or, in the alternative, you can search for yourself. If the Apple Store doesn't have what you want, search CompUSA.
