Mini-DVI to VGA connector resolution isses.

Hi all.
I have a Packard Bell 19" Monitor that supports 1440x900 75hz Resolution and bought a Mini DVI to VGA cable to connect it to my MacBook(Late 2007). When I attempt to calibrate its resolution there is no 1440x900 option at all. Ive read online that this is due to the VGA adapter? Is this true? and would I be better swapping my adapter for the mini DVI to DVI adapter (Which I would rather not use as my windows desktop connects to this thus equaling more faf.)

VGA maximum resolution I think is about 1200 x 800. If you want 1440 x 900, DVI to DVI would be the best way to achieve this. KVM switches, and A/B boxes exist for DVI that would allow your PC to share with the MacBook the display.

Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter Resolution?

If I hook my macbook to my hdtv using the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter what's the highest resolution I'll achieve? Will it be the max resolution of the TV or the Macbook?

Mini-DVI to VGA maximum resolution?

I have an external monitor with only VGA input, and it's resolution is 1680 x 1050. Will my MacBook be capable of using this display at it's native resolution using a mini-DVI to VGA adapter?
The display is the HP w2007v in case anyone is interested.

External Display Modes
The default display mode setting on the MacBook is extended desktop display. To toggle between the two modes, press the F7 key, or go to System Preferences>Displays>Arrangement.
A scaling function is available when the internal display and an external monitor are both operating and the mirror mode is selected. However, the external monitor could have black borders during mirroring, depending on the supported timings between the two displays and on the monitor’s selection algorithm. Black borders are not seen on VGA displays.
Both displays show full-sized images when the display resolution for the external monitor is set to the internal display’s native resolution: 1280 by 800. Both displays can operate with other resolution settings, but in mirror mode, one of the displays may be smaller than the full screen and have a black border around it. With the resolution for the external monitor set to less than 1280 by 800, the image on the internal display is smaller than its screen. For resolution settings larger than 1280 by 800, the image on the external monitor is smaller than its screen.
In mirror mode, the maximum size of the external display is 1280 by 800 at 60 Hz. In extended desktop mode, the maximum size of the external display is 1920 by 1200 at 60 Hz.
So in extended mode the 1680x1050 resolution should be avaiable.

Mini DVI to VGA Connector

Hi I am trying to connect my Macbook to a projector via the Mini DVI to VGA Adapter. My Macbook recognizes the projector in the system preferences but the projector says no signal. I have tried every kind of arrangement, of computer on first, or projector on first and have had no luck. Then I tried connecting the same Mini DVI to VGA to my hp Monitor at home and that works just fine.
Can anybody give any ideas as to how to fix this? I have had to use my wife's crappy PC 2 weeks in a row to run my Power Point in my class. I need help!

I tried all the resolutions that I had available. I tried different combinations or resolutions with different Hz rates. I also tried putting them both on the same resolution with the same Hz. I also clicked detect displays and nothing happens. When I first plug the projector into my Mini DVI port the projector resolution and Hz, and the LCD resolution and Hz automatically change to the same.
And what kinda weird is that my assistant professor in the class has an old G4 Powerbook and he can connect up to the same projector instantly. Is there any way of posting a pic, because I took a screen capture showing what my comp. looks like when i plug it in?

Macbook mini-dvi to vga display resolution issue

I'm connecting my 13in first generation macbook to an external LCD display. It's an ACER AL2216W. I'm running latest Snow Leopard.
I could always just click 'detect displays' and it would figure out what kind of monitor I had and I would be off and running at the native 1600x1050.
Now for some reason when I click detect displays, it only shows the laptop native resolutions. There is no 1600x1050 in the resolution list and instead of saying "ACER AL2216W" at the top of the display preferences, it just says "Display"
I've tried rebooting, plugging in and and out my monitor cable to the macbook and a variety of other things but to no avail. I'm forced to use 1024x768 right as it is the only resolution that displays correctly on my monitor.   Any ideas on how to get back the detect display working and have 1600x1050 resolution again?

I have a 40 lcd tv and have my macbook hookuped to it using the mini display port to vga and it looks really good, but i only use it for watching movies. Dedicated monitors are still better for reading text or playing games

Mini-DVI to VGA or Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter?

Hi There,
I am so close to purchasing a new Mac Mini that I can almost taste it. When I finally get the Mini, I want to hit the ground running, so I am trying to research everything out so I do have any stupid delays.
With the Mini, I want to use my 17" Apple CRT Studio Display with its 15-pin miniature D-type connector (I'm assuming that this is the typical VGA display connector). When I first started looking into the Mini, I figured that I could use a Mini-DVI to VGA connector and just be done with it. When I looked at the Mac Mini Accessories page that Apple set up, however, Apple says that I need a Mini Display Port to VGA adaptor and doesn't say boo about the Mini DVI adaptor. Doing some cursory Googling lead me to believe that the most current MacBooks and Minis will not support Mini DVI to VGA adaptors. Is this true?
If you were me, if either adaptor can be used, which VGA adaptor would you use? Is one superior over another? Inquiring minds want to know.

Personally, I'm using a minidisplayport to vga adapter I had to pay $30 for and it's working great for me and I can't tell the difference in image quality from the minidvi to dvi cable that comes with the mini.
Also, why not get the displayport so you can run 2 monitors at once?
If the displayport doesn't work with your monitor then I would try the mini-dvi version.
But yeah don't be suprised if you have to mess with it to make it work since it seems to work for some like me and not for others:

Mini-DVi to VGA colour loss?

I am in the process of buying a Mini-DVi to VGA connector, but have been told, by an Apple Store in Korea, that the connector isn't very good and that it has colour problems. Loss of colour and colour mismatching. Has anybody had these problems and if so, is there a way around it?

I don't know about color mismatching (I have an old Studio Display CRT hooked up to my iMac for extra real estate, so the color and brightness differences between the CRT and LCD are very noticeable), but I have the full palette of colors; I think the biggest concern that I have read about (see the reviews on the Apple store site) has been its sturdiness, with many ceasing to function after months of use.
I must say, however, that mine has been working fine since July (knock wood), as did my mini-VGA to VGA connector from Apple to hook my old eMac up to the 17" CRT.
To my thinking, for a little less than $20, it's not a bad gamble.

Mini DVI to VGA or Mini DisplayPort to VGA

I've used up all the HDMI connectors on my 1080p LCD, so need to use the VGA connection, which thankfully supports 1920 x 1080 native.
I was in the Apple store today and noticed they sell both a mini DVI to VGA adapter, as well as a mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter - the latter being $5 more expensive.
Since it's converting to analog in both cases, I'm wondering if there's any potential advantage of one vs. the other.
I'm looking for the best possible picture as my new mini will be serving as my media hub, so any input is appreciated.
And I've been connecting a laptop to my TV via regular VGA up till now and it looks amazing, so not worried about going VGA instead of HDMI...
Edit: Sorry - somehow posted this in the totally wrong forum but don't see any option to move it to Early 2009 -> using the Mac mini...

I was half expecting to see that there would be a difference in maximum resolution between the two connectors when used with VGA adaptors, but there is not. You can get up to 2048x1536 using either. There should not be any difference in quality of output between them.

Mini-DVI to VGA flicker with Snow Leopard and 2nd monitor

I have a 24" iMac (fall 2007) and recently purchased a 26" Vizio (VMM26F10I) and connected it as a 2bd monitor for my iMac using the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter Apple sells.
The new monitor will flicker now and then and some times will go to no signal. I have to change resolutions to something else and then back to standard setting to get it to come back or unplug adapter and plug back in.
Is there a fix for this?

26" VGA...? Which resolution/frequency? Have you tried a fresh cable with clean connectors, etc....
What did Vizio say when you contacted them with this question about your new purchase?

Mini DVI to DVI to HDMI Vs Mini DVI to VGA

When I connect my MacBook to my LG 32" HD Ready LCD TV via Mini DVI to DVI connector and DVI to HDMI cable, image is sharp but color seems very pale and washed out. However, when using Mini DVI to VGA connection, colors are brilliant, though images via DVI are sharper.
I tried calibrating the display but couldn't achieve the brilliant colors of the VGA connection.
Is this normal? Any solution for this?
I'm also connecting my PS3 to my TV via HDMI and don't have this problem.

I am having a very similar problem.
I have a 35" Westinghouse LCD TV (not the best I know but I'm a college student). I had been using a VGA adapter/cable in order to use my TV as a monitor, but I decided to upgrade (or so I thought) to a digital signal so I purchased a Mini-Dvi to HDMI adapter, etc.
Here's the problem:
My display settings on my MacBook for my LCD TV only allow me to choose either '1280 x 720' or '1920 x 1080'. My TV cannot support the higher resolution so when I chose the '1920 x 1080' setting, the picture comes up with good color quality, but the actual image looks over compressed and does not fill up the screen. When I choose the '1280 x 720' setting, the image resolution looks great, EXCEPT the colors are way off, faded, washed out, etc.
This is problem is so frustrating because I can get the resolution to look good OR the color to look good, bot never both. I have read several forums that touch on a similar issue and have tried all types of monitor calibration but I can't get the color to look normal when the resolution is right.
I just don't understand why the only resolution that fits that of my TV has terrible color??
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Mini DVI to VGA Adapter w/ extension cable

I would like to get a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my macbook. Does anyone know how it would would if I used it with a VGA extension cable. Any experience will be helpful

Depends on how long the cable is, and if it was of sufficient quality for computer use. The higher resolutions require better quality and shorter cables. You may get some signal loss for long cables. A standard monitor cable that comes with a computer monitor should be fine, but what kind of length extension cable are you talking about?

Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter Problems in Boot Camp / Windows

I currently run Windows XP SP2 on my MacBook and recently purchased the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter so I could hook up the MacBook to an external projector, monitor, or TV to display what's on my Windows screen on the external device. However, when I connect it to any external device, it just goes nuts and sporadically continues to make the hardware connect and hardware disconnect sounds and doesn't allow for external output of the screen. Any suggestions...? Thanks!

I think I solved this problem.
It was in issue for me. My second monitor would only display the Windows XP screen when it was loading, then it would black out. I couldn't even move my mouse arrow to the other side. Then I fixed it, here's how (running Windows XP SP3):
1. Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes
2. Display
3. Go to tab "settings"
4. Double click the blue image with the "2" inside it. This is the second monitor, adjacent to your first, or primary, monitor. The blue box may be a desaturated, greyish blue, meaning that the monitor is disabled. Click it and it a box will pop up asking if you want to enable the monitor. Click OK, and then like magic, your monitor is resurected in it's Windows Glory! From there, adjust the resolution, and it should work perfectly.
This isn't a Boot Camp compatability issue, it's just a problem with the lack of familiarity that users of OS X have with using XP.

Mini DVI to VGA in Mac and Windows XP with Bootcamp

I just bought 13in MacBook the first time so I am new with this system.
I am trying hook up MacBook Mini-DVI output to Panasonic th-42pd25up (EDTV) with VGA input for PC. I hooked it up using Apple's Mini DVI to VGA adapter to TV. (TV also has HDMI input which TV manual says not to use it.
TV's resolution are :
640x480 for 4:3 aspect ratio
852x480 for 16:9 aspect ratio
I have two problems watching streaming video at 300 to 700mbp of soccer or cricket sport broadcasts.
1. In Mac system, I only get blue screen of computer on TV with out any writing or pictures or tool bar.
2. In Microsoft XP using BootCamp I get "no signal" on TV. Would I have success using Parallels software?
I am missing some important games!!!

This is normal in extended desktop. You can drag anything you want from the main screen to the external screen. I prefer it this way when I am watching MLB.TV. I keep the game on my external and use my internal work surfing and other stuff.

Mini DVI to VGA problem

Hello,
I just recently bought the mini DVI to VGA adaptor for my new MacBook because I wanted to use my laptop as a dvd player and plug it into the TV in my room. The TV is a Samsung LCD ln S1951W, when I plug it in the computer detects the display but the TV still flashes the no signal thingie. I've tried it with a proyector and it works fine. It's not the vga-vga cable because it works fine when i connect my iBook. Could anyone help me fix this problem please?

If you are just using it for that specific screen (just for the moment use a workaround). I have the same screen.
Download SwitchResX and make the following setup under "Custom" 1360x 768 at 60Hz. Restart for the settings to be available. It should solve the flashing problem for this specific screen.
If you don´t want to pay for SwitchResX, just check that the new resolution settings are available in the normal mac display options (which they should) and unistall it... the settings will be stored and you can use them indefinitely.
Wait, just re-read your post, you are not getting any signal at all? Then I have no clue if this will solve it. Try it anyways.

Mini-DVI to VGA cable... LCD TV has female input

I recently bought a mini-DVI to VGA adapter from an Apple store, to connect my MacBook with a broken screen to a UMC LCD TV. When it came to plugging the VGA end into the TV, I realised it has exactly the same connector (female I think) as the TV. This obviously means they will not connect, and I haven't been able to find a connector that will do the job. I was surprised to find that after a fair amount of searching no one else appears to have had this problem, so maybe I'm being stupid somewhere here. Thanks for help.

You need a VGA male-to-male cable to connect the Apple mini-DVI to VGA adapter to your LCD TV:
MacBook > Mini-DVI to VGA adapter > VGA male to male cable > LCD TV
