Mini DVI to VGA does not display

I have a mini dvi adaptor to a vga cable but when i connect it to the TV the computer nor the TV recognizes that anything is different. When I connect the Mini DVI to HDMI the screen automaticly changes and displays on my TV.
Does anyone else have this problem or a solution to it? Thanks for your help.
(p.s. I read many other posts but couldn't find anything that addressed this problem)

Well, when I use the mini dvi to hdmi to tv series the mac automatically recognized the tv. All I have to do is change the input on my tv and it displays just fine, however, there is no sound. My tv does not have a sound-in port for the hdmi but if you hook up a sound system throught the headphone jack you will be golden.

Mini DVI to VGA adapter not working

I just purchased a new Mini DVI to VGA adapter to use with my Mac Book. The day I bought it I plugged it in and worked great! Now after disconnecting it and reconnecting back to my Mac Book things are not so good. When I hook everything up to each other the monitor shows "no signal". Using Systems Preferences/Detect Display does not help at all. Am I missing something obvious here? I'm a new Mac junkie.

Mini DVi to VGA : impossible to display to a video projector

I bought a MINI DVI to VGA adaptor and i as soon as i connect my videoprojector (Sanyo) to my Imac with the mini DVI-VGA adaptor, my Imac screen freezes and nothing appears on the video projector screen.
What can I do ?

Not exactly, though you can reset the PMU of an iMac flat panel machine with a PowerPC G4 processor, reset the SMU of a G5 PowerPC-equipped platform, or reset the SMC of one driven by an intel processor.
Any corrupted settings stored which might affect your external video will be dealt with by those processes. Have you attached the adapter alone and seen this same outcome, or does it occur only when a VGA projector is attached to the adapter?

Mini-dvi to video does not work

I have the 13-inch white macbook purchased in 2008. I just bought a mini-dvi to video cord and tried hooking it up to my TV using RCA and S-video and neither work. When I plug the cord into my computer, the resolution on my computer changes and then when I plug it into my TV it does not appear on the TV. When I change the display resolution on my computer to the lowest option, I can see the display from the computer on the TV rapidly moving across the screen and it is extremely distorted and doesn't appear to have any color. I chose detect displays and this did not do anything. Am I doing something wrong? Why won't my computer image display on the TV?

I also have the same issue. SVideo / RCA adapter purchased from Fry's Electronics. Apple Brand. Worked the week I bought it, and after a couple of updates, stopped being reliable.
Now, after some trial and error, I can get it to work, its just painfully convoluted.
The trick for my system is to keep trying it, (re-seating the adapter at the mini-dvi connection) and eventually it works.
Iv found that It only works when it "latches" to the video adapter instantly.
Sometimes its 3 times. Sometimes its 15. Quite random.
Seeing as how I don't like watching movies on a 13" screen. I just have to be patient.
I have been searching/waiting for some kind of apple firmware, or video adapter update that adresses this, as I dont believe its anything more than a software bug.
Any useful info would be much appreciated.

I have the 2009 mac mini (2.2GHz cor 2 duo nvidia 9400 256mb) and I recently purchased the Panasonic TC-L37D2 LED LCD tv. I use the mini dvi to dvi adapter with a belkin dvi to hdmi cable I purchased at the apple store to connect the mac mini to the tv. I cant seem to get the display to correctly fill the screen. When I select 1080P the top menu bar is out of view. Basically the desktop is larger than what is displayed on the screen making navigation difficult. I tried overscan but my screen then has black bars framing the entire desktop. Are there any updated display drivers I can try to fix this. I tried the third party software switchresx but I was only able to correct the vertical issue and not the horizontal issue (so the apple pulldown in the upper left corner is off of the screen). Why is it such a hassle to get this working? My buddy has a 42 inch Panasonic plasma and does not have any problems. Anyone know the correct switch resX settings at least? I see that Apple has added an hdmi port to the new mac minis but that just means I should have waited to buy mine. :/

Read my post in Mac Mini to HDTV. A 3rd party utility called DisplayConfigX will allow you to create a custom resolution that will resize the Mac DVI/HDMI output to fit.
It is annoying when that top menu bar is off the screen huh?

Difficut to say why it won't work, but my guess is your vintage iMac (about 2007) was never designed to output via HDMI. Your adapter appears correct (thanks for the Amazon link) so if you want to persist, you can contact Amazon and request and exchange to check it. But I suspect you will need to use VGA or if your TV has it DVI which would mean using a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
One last thought is you could invest in an Apple TV and then do it wirlessly. That would work too but requires and AppleTV to accomplish it, of course you can use the AppleTV for streaming other data too including video, photos, music etc....

Mini-HDMI to VGA does not work with projectors having long cables

Usually it works but in some lecture/presentation rooms projectors show "no signal" (I changed all possible graphic settings). There seems to be a problem with cable length because after using a VGA repeater increasing video signal strength projectors show a picture. But the problem is those VGA repeaters are quite expensive and too big (if you are travelling). Some Mini-HDMI VGA adapters have USB ports to connect them to a power source but this does not really help to increase signal strength.I find this issue very annoying because all other (older) laptops with VGA ports or MacBooks with displayport-VGA adapters do not have this problem and produce a video signal that is strong enough to connect to projectors with long cables.
My questions are:
a) Is it possible to adjust my ThinkPad hardware settings to improve signal strength?
b) If not, is there a small Mini-HDMI VGA adapter that produces a signal strong enough to connect projectors with long cables?
c) If not, is there an affordable and small VGA repeater that does the job?

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, I have connected a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter in order to watch movies on a HP w19e LCD display.
Ive been using this adapter for a year now and I have never had any problems with it, until now...whenever I connect it to my mac's display turns black, and nothing happens, so I wait and the LCD display shows the unfurtunate NO SIGNAL message, so I wait a little longer and still nothing happens, I unplug the Mini DisplayPort and plug it back in, and nothing happens, and when I say nothing happens I mean nothing happens, my mac's display is black as if it was in sleep mode, I get no signal on the HP LCD and I can't get my computer's display to show image again, the only way to do it is to force restart it.
I looked up the problem and I found a forum with a possible solution for it and did as it said.
1) Restart the computer in Safe Mode with display attached (shut down and restart while holding down shift key).
The display showed up without distortion.
2) Change the display to my desired preferences (dimensions and refresh rate).
3) Restart computer. ...and it works like a charm.
I followed the directions and it worked... but after I restar to go back to um.. normal mode, the problem is back.
Please I need my LCD screen how can I fix this.

I'm having the same problem. When I try to connect to the switch in our conference room (connecting both a flat panel display and/or a projector, both with much higher native resolutions), all I get is 640x480. This is a huge problem to using bootcamp, and I really need to get this to work. I was able to get a higher resolution 1280x800 on a separate, portable display, so I'm wondering if people have the problem with standalone projectors or only with projectors connected to some sort of switch, in my case an Extron MPX423A. I have also tried this in both Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 RC1 (32-bit), with the bootcamp drivers and the latest NVidia drivers, and the behavior is the same all around.

G4 12" mini DVI to VGA external monitor does not display

I have hooked up the mini adapter cable and hooked up the VGA cable to a Dell P780, which the apple recognized. The monitor acts like it is going to come on, but then appears to go into sleep mode... The G4 is functioning as if the monitor is working.
I hooked my PC to the monitor, and it works fine.
I have tried two different monitors.
I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM...

Are you using the mini DVI to DVI followed by a DVI to VGA adapter? That may not work if the mini DVI to DVI adapter does not pass analog video. If that is the case, you need the mini DVI to VGA adapter:

Using external Display via Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter does'nt work

i recently bought a mini-dvi-to-vga adapter.
When I plug it into my macbook and connect it to my 19" external TFT, the MB recognizes the TFT as [Medion] MD30219PH but the display stays blank (no matter if i choose mirroring mode or extended desktop)...
Already changed the Hz-Rate between 59.9, 60 and 75 Hertz and the Resolution also... but nothing happens.
In extended Desktop mode i can even slide the cursor into the area where the display is supposed to be...

From what I've been told, using the computer's video output isn't outputting a true NTSC picture. I was told when talking about how the Macbook Pros dropped the S-vdieo port that I shouldn't use that anyways, but rather to go the firewire route. THat was actually converts the video source to true NTSC instead of taking a computer output to a TV. While I have no doubt that it works, I'm willing to bet that you'll see a noticeable difference between the G5 S-video and your MB using firewire. Most consumer camcorders from the past several years do digital (firewire) to analogue (NTSC) conversion, so you probably don't even need a new box.

I have a 2010 Mac Pro and just got a the Mini DVI to VGA adapter so I can connect it to a projector. The mini-dvi port however seems to be too small for the adapter. What should I do?

Mini dvi to vga not working properly

I have a Macbook from around 2008 and it has a mini dvi port. I have a mini-dvi to vga adapter going to my Vizio 32 inch TV's RGB port. I have tried two adapters, and they both have problems.
The display works fine coming from both of my G5s, which are running DVI to VGA to to the VGA cable to RGB port. However, when I run the mini-dvi out of my Macbook, it does bizarre things. It resets the display on my Macbook, and displays only part of the information on the Vizio screen. For instance, the first adapter would show the wallpaper of my Mac, but would not show the icons on the TV. This second adapter does the reverse. The icons disappeared from my laptop, but showed on the TV. The mouse shows sometimes on the TV, sometimes only on the Macbook. Etcetera.
What's going on here? This should work. Grateful for help and suggestions. Thank you.

Oh, it won't let me edit, so here's an added note:
This time I started the macbook with the adapter plugged in, so that it didn't have to adjust. It booted normally, with normal color, recognized properly on the TV, and then went to teh login screen. All normal. Once it booted into my login, and everything loaded on the desktop, the blue haze covered the screen. This happened twice. The first time, I hard-rebooted - and for some reason it's sort of loud and sounds like it's working very hard to reboot. The second time I unplugged the adapter, the laptop tried to reset itself, and showed the icons, but not my picture in the middle of the wallpaper or the program bar at the bottom. It did not respond properly to the restart command, hanging upon shutdown, so I did a hard-shutdown again.

Okay, it must be somewhere in the settings. I am logged in from another login on the machine, which I keep as a control. It is working fine, no issues. I will somehow have to trace down the problem? THe other login is my main and everything is loaded on that one. Does this issue sound familiar to anyone? welcome any guidance.

Macbook 13" Core 2 Duo, Mini DVI to DVI will not work (Mini DVI to VGA OK)

I've recently purchased a used Macbook 13" with a Mini DVI out display port. When I try to use a Mini DVI to DVI adapter to an Acer X223W (or a few other Acer / Dell models), the Macbook screen either blinks blue to white constantly or doesn't do anything at all. When I use a Mini DVI to VGA adapter, it works fine, however, the MAC does not give an option for my monitors native resolution (1680 x 1050).
At first I thought there was a physical issue with the Mini DVI port, however the VGA adapter works fine. I've also tried a new DVI adapter in case the first one was defective - same results.
Am I missing something here? I don't think there are options to upgrade drivers on a MAC (I'm semi-new to the platform).

What happens if you try just the monitor, e.g. keep the lid down on the MB? The MB should be attached to it's AC adapter to try this. Also, some kind of USB device will be needed to wake up the closed MB. Pretty much anything hot-plugged into a USB port on the MB will cause it to wake up. Would be curious to know if a DVI monitor works under those conditions.

Mini-dvi to VGA not working

I've searched in the discussions forae to see if this issue has happened before, but it doesn't seem so.
I have a new MacBook 13 in duo 2 and tried connecting a secondary display with a mini-dvi to vga adapter that I bought 2 years ago....and it doesn't work! No image appears on the second display and when I press detect display on the display preference panel, nothing happens.
Does any mini DVI adapter work (the one that fits with a U connection)? Or maybe I need a newer one?

I don't know what part number it is (it doesn't have a number anywhere), but it fits in the Mini DVI port. I would assume that any adapter that fits should work. If it doesn't work,then maybe the adapter is broken.....or my video output is broken!

Samsung P400 Projector not working with mini-DVI to VGA

I've never had so many hardware problems with a computer before... sigh.
Why they labeled a 100-240v 50/60Hz power supply with a sticker that says 100-120V 60Hz is beyond me (Sony did the same with their original US PS3s but that's another tale). Anyways, here's my issue.
I just bought the new 2009 Mac Mini along with a Samsung P400 Projector. This is one of those new pocket type with the LED bulbs.
The Samsung P400 has a native resolution of 800x600 60Hz and can accept analog composite or VGA video signals.
So, in my blind belief that Apple would sell me the correct adapter to go from mini-DVI to VGA, I went and I purchased said adapter. And lo and behold, it doesn't work.
Now, I'm a computer guy, I've built my own systems. I know the difference between analog and digital, DVI-I and DVI-D, etc. So, when I read the specs on my merchandise and they all use the same connection labels DVI, mini-DVI, VGA, etc. it really irks me to find that they are all incompatible with each other. I don't understand how this is supposed to help the customer. It's ridiculous. Apple is supposed to be user friendly but this is downright evil.
But, I've invested over a thousand dollars in this venture and I want it to work. *SO, before I go and run out and spend another $30 on a mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter, can anyone tell me if it will work with my projector????*

But I had just figured out a solution today. I guessed that the resolution wasn't holding when I switched monitors so I went and picked up a mini-DisplayPort adapter to run the monitor along side the projector at the same. This way I could see what was going on.
Turns out that projector was automatically being set to 1600x1200. I changed the resolution to a lower one and it was fixed. Of course, when I tried to switch back to the mini-DVI to VGA adapter, OS X forgot the settings again and I had to redo everything.
I'll try your solution as well but for now, I think I am okay. I will just use the mini-DisplayPort to VGA and not unplug the projector unless I really have to.
I'll test your solution just in case I need to reset the resolution again.
