Mini-Dvi - VGA Problems

I just bought a mini-dvi to vga adapter from apple but can't get it to work with my philip's hdtv. It works perfectly when plugged into my pc monitor, but when going into the tv I just get a blank screen with "no signal detected". I've using a VGA to DVI convertor on the cable going into the tv, I know I should have gotten a straight mini-DVI to DVI cable, but I wanted to be able to use VGA as well.
My old iBook worked perfectly, but it detected my tv as a VGA monitor, whereas the MacBook detects it as a HDMI display. Is there any way I can force OS X to set my TV as a VGA display? Or is there any other fix around?
My tv is DVI-I in I think, which I read elsewhere has caused some conflict with mac mini's.

Well, I just got myself a mini-DVI to DVI adaptor so that I could connect it to a DVI-VGA adaptor and on to my VGA (Apple) CRT.
I may get a DVI-capable monitor in the future, so it seemed like a good future-proofing exercise. Unfortunately the DVI plug has four more pins (around the flat-blade pin) than the port on the mini-DVI adaptor has holes!
so it doesn't fit.
DRAT! I have been waiting for the DVI adaptors to come into the Apple Centre for a couple of weeks, and now it's no good! Grrr.

Mini dvi-vga problem - Need help

When I connect my mac mini to a 32 inch Samsung HDTV via a dvi-vga adapter, the source is not recognized. I jsut get a black screen. However, when I connect it to the HDMI port, it works great. But, I wantto use the HDMI port for the Television source, not the computer source.
Any ideas?

Did you get the mini-DVI to VGA adapter from Apple? Are your other cables okay?
Perhaps a mini-DVI to video adapter would be a better choice for you.

Macbook mini-dvi -- VGA projector problems

At the school i teach at we have problems hooking up our new macbooks to one of our projectors. We use a mini-dvi --> VGA cable to hook up the projector. The mac recognises the projector and it gets listed under screens, the resolution also changes. But no picture is beeing projected by the projector.
If we use a mini-dvi --> s/video/rca cable it works fine, but the quality of the picture is too low. The projector works nicely with the older macs we have, wich use the mini-dv --> vga cable.
Any toughts on what may be the problem, or what we could try?

I am having the same problem. I have to do powerpoint presentations at college and it was so embarrassing to go up there and my macbook not sync up. It use to work. I even bought a new adapter. It did not fix the problem. All the windows laptops were able to sync up to the projector but mine did not. This one one of the main reasons I bought a macbook. I need to take my work to school and connect to projectors. I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. There appears to be no physical damage. When I click detect displays nothing happens. Now I have to redo everything on windows. Please, I hope someone has a fix for this. I am using the following; 2 GHZ Intel Core 2 DUo, 1 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.10

Mini DVI - VGA Issue

I purchased a Mini DVI-VGA adaptor from Apple over a year ago. I've used it only to connect my Macbook to a projector. Once connected, the screen will flash briefly and then the resolution will change and I will be able to switch back and forth from single screen to dual screen by clicking F7...but this was back when things were beautiful and I had no issues.
Now, my adaptor will not work...neither would another Min DVI-VGA adaptor that I tried...but yet the port will work when I connect my Mini DVI-SVideo/RCA adaptor.
Is there a setting that I may have changed? It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue because the port will work with a different type of adaptor.

Hi. I have pretty much the same problem: everything was fine until yesterday. As usual, the screen flashed briefly but then the resolution DID NOT change and the projector could not connect. After removing the adaptor, the screen flashed again but that's it but there was no difference as the resolution had not changed. To note that the adaptor is (grrrr) new (bought about a month ago). Could it be an issue with MAC OS 10.6.2? or maybe the firmware needs an update? I'd be glad if someone could help. Cheers,

Mac mini 2009 . Mini DVI - VGA adapter with Monitor LG L1953S . No sleep .

Yesterday i started in the fabulous world of MAC with my brand new MAC MINI . The problem that i have is that when the MAC mini is in stand-by the monitor is not in sleep state , and i get in the monitor screen " check cable " . So i have to disconnect manually the monitor when mac is in sleep state .
I am using mini-dvi to vga adapter (original mac ) .
¿What is the problem ?

DVI-I provides the direct Analog signals needed to get VGA using a very simple adapter.
DsiplayPort (and its Mini variant) requires a converter to produce VGA or Dual-Link DVI, and the converter must be active/powered. There is a lot of logic in those converters. It may also have additional limitations.
In general, you should hook your highest resolution, most demanding display up with the DVI to VGA adapter.If running two Mini DisplayPort displays, ALL MiniDisplayPort converters must be active/powered.

Mini DVI - VGA doesn't fit mac

I just bought a Mini-DVI to VGA Adaptor cord So I could have dual displays. But the slot on my mac is a diffrent size. Did I buy the wrong cord? what cord should i buy.

You don't have a Mini DV slot. What you have is a Mini VGA slot. The Mini DV slot is double the height of your slot. For comparison, check out these two:

Mini-DVI out problem

I recieved my mini-dvi -> dvi apple adaptor from ebay this morning (finally!), but am having a feew teething problems. The plug fits snugly in the back of the iMac, but if pressure( only a little) is applied to the side or top of the plug (the one going into the back of the iMac), I lose the picture. Is it possible that I have a dodgy knock off adaptor ? The part number (603-3795) on the wrapper matched the part number for the 12" powerbook G4 mini-dvi -> dvi adaptor.
After a little more examination I have found that if the plug is pushed in fully, it does take a little leverage to make the connection 'die' I suspect this is due to the greater number of (very) small connections on the mini-dvi port. It does only seem to happen when the plug is pushed toward the DVD drive side of the iMac too (again suspecting losing the connection to a key pin or two).
Does anyone else have experience with this ,and can they advise if they experience similar problems?
Of particlar note is the fact that the menubar (which I have placed on the external monitor) does not get relocated to the iMac screen when the external monitor goes dark, so presumablyy the mac still thinks the monitor is connected. Is there any chance the problem is due to a faulty connection on the motherboard.
I only purchased the iMac from John Lewis last Weds, so presumably I would be within my rights to return it and insist on a replacement?

Mini DVI -- VGA Adapter

When you insert the adapter into the iMac...isn't the screen supposed to flicker and adjust or something? When I plug the appropriate VGA adapter into my MacBook Pro, the screen flickers and adjusts and sends a signal just fine. The iMac - not so much. No reaction at all to having a mini DVI to VGA adapter plugged in. The result of this is no image appearing on the tv. Is there a way to test the mini DVI port on the iMac? Unfortunately, the only thing I may be able to do is find someone else with an iMac and try the adapter on their computer.

Do it the other way around!
1. Connect the VGA cable to the TV.
2. Connect the Adapter to the VGA cable.
3. Then connect the Adapter to the iMac.

No video with mini dvi - vga adapter (2007 Macbook)

Connecting an external TFT display (Nokia 500 Xa) to my MacBook's mini dvi port with a mini dvi to vga adapter, there's no video.
Any ideas about what might cause this? the monitor is a bit old, but VGA should still be the same, eh?
I thought maybe it's the adapter's pin configuration... What exactly does the adapter let through?

Mac Mini DVI Monitor Problems

Hi all,
I'm running OSX10.8.5 on a Mac Mini 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory and Intel HD 4000 512MB graphics.
I've just upgraded my monitor from a VGA 17" to an AOC E2462VWH 24" monitor, plugged into my computer via DVI with a Thunderbolt adaptor.
In a normal boot-up, the monitor displays video for a split second and then cuts to black. The picture works fine in Safe Boot mode but video is jerky, everything loads slower, I can't play .mov files (Quicktime tells me unknown error -101) and there is an annoying flicker every 10 seconds. The fact the monitor works fine in Safe Boot suggests to me the problem is software. Resolution is set to 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz and OSX is not letting me change that via Settings.
I went searching for drivers only to lean it sounds like OSX deals with monitors in a plug-n-play format. Is this true?
Firstly, can I confirm my mini has the power to drive this monitor?
Besides that, can you please help me figure out how to boot this computer so the monitor displays in normal boot-up mode?

Mini DVI to external monitor (VGA) problem/firmware update does nothing

Hi,
Four months ago I bought a new white 13-inch Macbook (2006 model I believe) along with a handy mini-DVI - VGA adapter. I used a Hanns-G HU196D external monitor which worked fine for a couple of months but then stopped, and had the same problem with a (much cheaper) 'LiteView' monitor. I find it bizarre how they work absolutely fine and then stop, with no damage to the adapter, cable or ports. I've since bought a new adapter and cables + trying out a different monitor and still the same problem...
I've installed a firmware update that describes the exact symptoms, but it's done nothing. Can anyone help me resolve my issue?? It's still under warranty so is it an unusual problem that'll need to be fixed by Apple?

Are you using the mini DVI to DVI followed by a DVI to VGA adapter? That may not work if the mini DVI to DVI adapter does not pass analog video. If that is the case, you need the mini DVI to VGA adapter:

Samsung P400 Projector not working with mini-DVI to VGA

I've never had so many hardware problems with a computer before... sigh.
Why they labeled a 100-240v 50/60Hz power supply with a sticker that says 100-120V 60Hz is beyond me (Sony did the same with their original US PS3s but that's another tale). Anyways, here's my issue.
I just bought the new 2009 Mac Mini along with a Samsung P400 Projector. This is one of those new pocket type with the LED bulbs.
The Samsung P400 has a native resolution of 800x600 60Hz and can accept analog composite or VGA video signals.
So, in my blind belief that Apple would sell me the correct adapter to go from mini-DVI to VGA, I went and I purchased said adapter. And lo and behold, it doesn't work.
Now, I'm a computer guy, I've built my own systems. I know the difference between analog and digital, DVI-I and DVI-D, etc. So, when I read the specs on my merchandise and they all use the same connection labels DVI, mini-DVI, VGA, etc. it really irks me to find that they are all incompatible with each other. I don't understand how this is supposed to help the customer. It's ridiculous. Apple is supposed to be user friendly but this is downright evil.
But, I've invested over a thousand dollars in this venture and I want it to work. *SO, before I go and run out and spend another $30 on a mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter, can anyone tell me if it will work with my projector????*

But I had just figured out a solution today. I guessed that the resolution wasn't holding when I switched monitors so I went and picked up a mini-DisplayPort adapter to run the monitor along side the projector at the same. This way I could see what was going on.
Turns out that projector was automatically being set to 1600x1200. I changed the resolution to a lower one and it was fixed. Of course, when I tried to switch back to the mini-DVI to VGA adapter, OS X forgot the settings again and I had to redo everything.
I'll try your solution as well but for now, I think I am okay. I will just use the mini-DisplayPort to VGA and not unplug the projector unless I really have to.
I'll test your solution just in case I need to reset the resolution again.

Mini-DVI does not work with DVI anymore only VGA output

Hi,
I recently started to get problems with external LCDs. It used to work just fine, but now I can only use a mini-DVI-VGA adapter to get any output. This gives me much worse results than digital and makesme a little worried, other things might also stop s
working.
A quick search here and on google didn't give me any ideas how to fix this.
So any help is much appreciated!

Using Mini DVI to VGA adapter on MacBook

I bought the adapter from Apple & hooked up my LCD monitor to the MacBook, but the video I get on the monitor is different that on my laptop. It has an old screen background & the dock but nothing on my desktop shows up. Also, when I'm plugged to the monitor, my dock disappears on the laptop screen. Is there some setting I need to change? It worked fine with my G4 PowerBook.

i use the mini dvi-vga adapter in my classroom almost everyday. It sounds like your new monitor is running as a side by side monitor to your display instead of a "replacement" display.
To get your projector/monitor to basically show whatever is on your macbook screen once you've hooked up press F7....this should make your projector/monitory become your display with your dock & all of your desktop stuff. Your new monitor will completely mirror your display.
THis should do what you're looking for.

Not exactly, though you can reset the PMU of an iMac flat panel machine with a PowerPC G4 processor, reset the SMU of a G5 PowerPC-equipped platform, or reset the SMC of one driven by an intel processor.
Any corrupted settings stored which might affect your external video will be dealt with by those processes. Have you attached the adapter alone and seen this same outcome, or does it occur only when a VGA projector is attached to the adapter?
