Mini ethernet port as a solution to imac dead ethernet port

I have an old imac 2002 version and it works great but the ethernet port is dead ...not sure why...but I have checked the cables and connections with another computer and they are fine...So assuming that the port is dead
Can I purchase a mini and use the ethernet port as my connection to the internet via dsl modem and still use my imac...what I'm wondering is can the mini act as a second hard drive and can I network it to my imac via firewire and the use the etherport from the mini to get on the internet....directing it all through my imac?
I have been told in order to get my imac to connect with a dead ethernet port I need to purchase a new motherboard. That seems like a simple solution...but my imac works great except the ethernet...so if I can find a solution that will just offer me a ethernet connection to the internet and still let me use my imac and give me more memory ...all the better...
I am not well versed on the mini....So I need some expert advise as to whether it could be a alternative solution...that would also give me additional harddrive.
Help!

Yes indeed. Your plan will work (I have done similar with mini/powerbook and powermac).
In a nutshell - set up the new mini to use the ethernet. Once the network is running, go to Sharing preference pane and select the internet "tab". Choose to share the Built-In Ethernet with the Built-in Firewire - and click start.
Then connect the mini to the iMac with a firewire cable. Set the iMac to use firewire for its network.
The only possible gotcha is if you are not on the latest OS (this should work back a version or two - but I don't recall when I first did this). Second gotcha might be the firewall on the mini. You may have to enable logging to see if the firewall is preventing the iMac to connect in and through to the internet. If so - you have to live with opening up some ports on your firewall or learn how to configure that one iMac to get in and not the rest of the world (assuming you don't have a router or other firewall device to protect the new mini.)
Cheers and good luck.

  • How can I get a video signal using IMAC 27 with only mini display port. I like to send the signal wireless to a TV using a TV/audio transmit system.

I have an IMAC 27 with a mini display port ( only this). I also have all the adapters ( mini display port to VGA, HDMI...).
Since I moved to UAE I like to transmit the signal frm my IMAC ( where I also look German TV on) to my TV. I will do so by using a wireless Transmit receive system with theree cinch inputs ( transmit system ( video, 2x voice).
The distance to the TV IS ABOUT 10m and one wall. I don`t want to use a cable.
Is there any solution for example mini display to VGA + VGA adapter to cinch so I can use the transmit system?
HDMI would also be an optiekn, bat then I have to by another Transmit receive system.
If somebody made already the experience I would appreciate to share the information
Is there may be any store in UAE where to get support. It is very diificult to get good advice here. They sell everything bat can not reaaly explain and have very often  no technical knowledge. With this problem nobody until now can help me.

I don't know what AppleTV can handle as far as bit rate is concerned, but increase the bit rate as high as it will let you. You are taking DV which is 25Mb/s and compressing it. If you're making an H.264, you should get great results needing no more than 6Mb/s. Bear in mind, the higher the bit rate, the larger the file size.

  • Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display portS?

Is it possible to input itunes into DVI/HDCP input from imac with Apple mini display port? Or is there another way?

The problem with itunes is needing a computer running it. or continuous internet connection.
A Time Capsule is AC mains powered.. no battery. Although you can certainly buy an older Gen4 TC and modify it ...
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
I have run my TC on a 12V SLA battery.. which would neatly meet that part of the functionality you want. But it is heavy and not really the rugged sort of device I think you want.
But I would look at other media players and other ways of storing movies than iTunes.. if you want to carry the whole lot around with you .. A bunch of SD cards even you could plug into the ipad??
    External storage for iPad?
A small cheap PC/Mac laptop with a 1TB hard disk  in it.. and 11" or 13" screen.. can often be a much better solution than lugging around multiple items so you can fit Apple devices into your life.

  • How do Dual Monitor with my Mac Book Pro (Boot camped with Windows 8) through my mini display port VIA Thunderbolt to a iMac (Model Mid 2011)?

So I have a Mac Book Pro with a bootcamp Windows 8. I dual monitor on the Mac side with my Mid 2011 iMac through my mini display port via thunder bolt cable. In my perfect world, I would be able to switch to the Windows side and have the iMac mirror or extend my windows display for my gaming pleasure, etc. I'm not sure if it's just a simple driver or that it cannot be done. I have no proof, but I think it will not work with an adapter, only Mini Display Port or Thunderbolt.

  • How can I connect an ADC to an iMac G4 with mini-VGA port?

I have an Apple Studio Display monitor that I want to connect to my iMac G4 that has a mini-VGA port. I have the ADC to DVI adapter, but cannot find any adapters that go from DVI to mini-VGA. Please help!
I "inherited" these devices for work from a different university. They originally used the extra monitor with a PowerBook G4 that has a DVI port. But I would rather use it with the iMac - is it at all possible???
    Thanks!
    iMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.0 GHz 768MB DDR SDRAM

    Hi,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Depending on the age of the iMac G4 depends on what outputs are possible:
700/800MHz - Mini VGA port to VGA port
1.0/1.25GHz - Mini VGA port to VGA port or Mini VGA to S-Video/Composite.
I'm not sure if the first revision of 1.0GHz iMac (Early 2003) fell in to the first category or the latter one.
regardless... these adpators are available at theApple Store online for $19/£15. From there you'd need to find a VGA - DVI convertor and then the DVI to ADC convertor. Googling for such adaptors brings up several results.

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • HT4951 Can i use a Thunder bolt display with an iMac from the mid 2009 ? Would it work if connected to a mini dvi port in a scaled down mode or is it compulsory to have a thunder bolt port ?

I have a mid 2009 iMac that doesn't have Thunderbolt display, but has a mini-dvi port.
Will the Thunderbolt cinema display 27" still work when connected to this mini-dvi port ?
I thought it would be better going for a thunderbolt display monitor rather than the older version, so when i upgrade my machine in the future it stays compatible.

I have a mid 2009 iMac that doesn't have Thunderbolt display, but has a mini-dvi port.
Will the Thunderbolt cinema display 27" still work when connected to this mini-dvi port ?
No.  A TB display can only be connected to a TB source.
    Confusing Mini DisplayPort with Thunderbolt
As indicated in that artical a displayport device can be connected to a TB source.  But that is not your situation.

  • Does mini display port support audio on my Imac? Late 2009

    Hello,
I would like to connect my Imac to my home entertainment system.  I have the late 2009 21.5" model.  If I get a mini display port to HDMI adapter will that run both audio and video for me or do I have to run seperate audio?
    Thanks!

The good news is Yes.  You just barely made it, support for audio over MDP is:
    iMac (Late 2009) and later.
Make sure to buy a MDP to HDMI adapter that supports audio.  It should say this explicitly like this one.

  • What is the latest, older model iMac that has a DVI port. I do not want a Mini-Display Port

I want to use an iMac for my seminar. My projector only accepts VGA connections. I currently use my MacBook Pro using a cable that has DVI Male on one end and VGA Male on the other.  I can't get a Mini-Display to VGA adapter.
What is the latest, older iMac that I can buy that has a DVI-D output? All the new models at the Apple Store have Mini-Display ports only.
    Thank you.
    www.ImagineThatToo.Org

The Early 2008 iMacs were the last models with DVI output. They have a mini-DVI port.
However, Apple sells mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapters, as do 3rd party developers.

  • Is that actually a mini-DVI port on my G5 iMac?

So I can't seem to figure this out...
Is the Mini-DVI connector on the back of the G5 iMac (2 GHz, pre-camera or remote) a jack (male) or a port (female)? I bought one of the Apple mini-dvi -> S-Video & RCA adapter cables, but the mini-DVI end seems to be identical to the machine's connector, and thus they won't mate. Did I just buy the wrong adapter? I doubt this because Apple would have no reason to even make such an adapter, as all its models of computer should have the same sex of plug built-in, and thus no need for a choice between mini-DVI (M) -> whatever versus mini-DVI (F) -> whatever.
    Any help or advice?
The mini-DVI connector on the cable has a rectangular metal rim with rounded corners on the bottom. Inside that is a C-shaped (like 3 sides of a long, low rectangle) plastic element with 8 axially parallel contacts on each of: the outside of the top of the C; the inside of the top "..."; the inside of the bottom "..."; and the outside of the bottom "..."; this totals 32 contacts.
This doesn't appear to work with the port on the iMac. The whole in the machine's external frame doesn't immediately contact the outer metal rim of the jack; it appears there's enough space for the sleeve of the connecting plug to slide in betweeen them. Also, the rim seems slightly more rounded/angled than that of the adapter above. Thirdly, the plastic center element is a wide, low rectangle with barely rounded/angled bottom corners (4-sided versus the adapter's 3-sided/C-shpaed central plastic element). Lastly, there are 14 (not 32) contacts in a staggered (not axially parallel) layout which only exist on the inside (not the inside and outside) of the center plastic element.
So what's the story? Do I actually have a mini-VGA port (as in some of the laptops which were advertised as having a mini-DVI port but which were actually mini-VGA)?
Help! I need to get split screens going to start building the audio>visual>audio interface I need for a major installation/performance piece I'm working on.
    Thanks,
    RealJake

Real, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry to douse your enthusiasm but that is NOT a mini-DVI connector. It is a mini-VGA connector.

  • IMac does not recognize external monitor using Mini Display Port to HDMI

    Hello,
I have been trying to get an external monitor (HDTV) set up for use with my iMac using a Mini Display Port to HDMI cable I just got. However, when I connect it to my iMac's mini display port, the imac's screen goes black for about a second, then returns, but it does not detect the external display. The other display is just showing a "no signal" message on the screen.
I have restarted, reset PRAM, connected and disconnected the cable several times, tried changing the resolution on the imac, plugged in/out the other display, and clicked the "detect displays" button using the option key in display preferences, but nothing has worked.
I am using an early 2009 iMac running Mavericks.
I've been using the AirParrot app, but it's horrible for video and a little slow.
Can anyone please help sort the issue here? I feel like ive exhausted everything that I know to do.
    Thanks.

I am having the same issue.  Hope Apple can fix this soon!!!

  • How can I use my ADC apple cinema display on my iMac 2006 with mini display port?

I got this new screen on eBay for £20 and its an old ADC display and to my annoyance I found there isn't a way to hook it up to my iMac with a mini dvi port . So I was wondering if there is a work around that the community has come up with or if its just best to sell it ( bearing in mind that the next best screen from apple that I know will work is around £80 on eBay)
    Thanks, Jonny

You would need a DVI to ADC adapter, image below, search Ebay to find one in your area.

  • I have 2 iMacs, one has a thunderbolt port and the other has a mini display port. Would it be possible to use one as an extension of the other? If so what cable would I need.

    Hi,
As the title of the thread says. I have an older iMac with a mini display port and a newer iMac with a thunderbolt port. Would it be possible so that the older iMac is an extension of my new iMac. The reason for this is because logic x can be a abit clustered on one screen.
    Thanks

If you'll be using the 2010 iMac as the display, a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable.
It's not possible to use the 2011 iMac as the display through Target Display mode in that configuration.
