Mini-GBIC/SFP and VLANs

I am going to purchase two Cisco SG200-26P switches with a MGBSX1 transceiver for each and connect them together via fiber.  Am I correct to assume that the fiber port is configurable for VLANs?  So if I configure four VLANS (1-4 on both switches, port 1 on VLAN1, port 2 on VLAN2, etc.), I can configure the fiber port to be on all four VLANS so that traffic for all four VLANS will move between the two switches?

Hi David, you are correct.

  • SFP Mini-GBIC for Catalyst 2960

We are looking at getting the SFP Mini-GBIC from HP HP-J4858C.  This transceiver module is Gigabit-SX-LC Mini-GBIC.  Will this module work on our Catalyst 2960 PoE switches and will it also work using a MultiMode fiber?

I've used non-Cisco GBICs successfully in Cisco gear. In the event of a problem related to the link, the TAC MAY refer you back to the HP or suggest using a Cisco transceiver.
Running a multimode connection that close to the length limit is not the best idea but if that's all you have installed (and you can't get a single mode link installed) then it is what it is. A single mode GBIC WILL NOT operate over multimode fiber.
The high level specs cite distance but the real indicator of usability is better characterized by loss. As long as you getting adequate light levels at the receiver, you will be OK. Problem is, it's not easy to tell light levels (on a non-SMD type transceiver such as Leo suggested) without some relatively costly measurement equipment.

  • Copper SFP and GBIC for GigE 15454E Cards

    Hi Folks,
According to the documenationon on the Cisco site it appears that the GE 4 port CE card (15454-CE-1000-4)and the GE 2 port ML card (15454E-ML1000-2)only supports optical GBIC/SFPs.
I would like to connect these interfaces into a Cat switch which has 1GE copper interfaces. Does anyone know whether the copper GBIC/SFP will work with these cards?
Also would you know whether the 4 port CE card works in the 15454E chassis. The documentation seems to indicate that it does but there does not seem to be a 15454E item code for the card.
    Cheers,
    Phil

The only 15454 cards listed as compatible with the 1000BaseT SFP (ONS-SE-ZE-EL) are the ML-MR-10 & CE-MR-10, per the reference guide (url below).

  • Optical Fiber connection between GBIC module and SFP module

    Hi
I am in need of help.
I have a 3750 24TS-S, 2 port SFP, switch at the edge. And i have a 4507R switch at the Distribution layer. In 4507 switch I have WS-X4515 Sup IV supervisor engine with 2 GBIC Port and also have WS-4306-GB 6 port GBIC module. I am using WS-G5486 Single mode connector, LX/LH tranceiver to connect to this port.
This is the scenario.. i want to know is it posible to conect one end of the fiber cable to connect to a SFP Module ( 3750-24TS-S, 2 Port SFP) and other end ( WS-X4515 Sup IV supervisor engine with 2 GBIC Port or WS-4306-GB 6 port GBIC module) at the WS-G5486 Single mode LX/LH connector ?????
Plz let me now asap.. i need to give a solution imdtly.
    Thanks & regards

    Discussion is never a problem ....;-}
The issue is that the signal is "too loud" and is distorted (or, more correctly, is so loud it overloads the receiver).
The operational envelope for nearly every receiver of any kind includes a bottom number (too weak to hear) and a top number (too loud to understand).
As an example, think about an system where you have a hearing aid that would let you hear someone speaking in a normal voice from 100 feet away ... then having someone scream the same words into the hearing aid from 6 inches away ... the sound would be distorted and you would have difficulty understanding them ... after a while, you'd begein to go deaf and eventually, it would sound normal (until you became completely deaf).
So, what you need to do is look at the transmitter power, and the envelope/range of acceptable power the receiver can hear.
Normally that difference is the optical budget ... given the loss numbers of the media between the two, you can determine if you have enough power to make the trip.
In a Lab environment, you still have to hit the receiver's budget number, but from the other end (the "too high" side).
If you know the transmitter puts out X, and the receiver can accept from Y to (X-50), then you need to add enough attenuation to get X down to (X-50)or lower (but still more than Y).
When you have a transmitter powerful enough to drive tens of kilometers, putting one two meters away from the receiver will pretty much guarantee a burnout (unless you install optical attenuation).
    Good Luck

  • Does the SGE2010 support 10gb Mini GBIC?

    Hello,
I have one 48 port SGE2010 and one 24 port SGE2000P at separate sites that are connected with single-mode fiber. I was wondering if the SGE's will support 10gb Mini GBIC transceivers or only 1gb Mini GBIC transceivers? I would like to connect the two switches at 10gb.
    Example transceiver:
    https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Proline-Cisco-SFP-10G-LR-Compatible-10GBase-LR-SMF-SFP-mini-GBIC-module/2146046.aspx
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
I have never actually seen a 2Gb connector, but even if you found one the SGE switches are only able to do 1Gb on it's ports.  You may be able to configure a link aggregation between the two switches, but that really only gives you more bandwidth when there are lots of different hosts communicating over the link. I go over why this is in this post, starting with the second paragraph of my reply.
If you really would like a faster link the next step up is 10Gb.  The SG500 switches can support a 5Gb link between them (although this still uses either the 10Gb stacking cable, or a 10Gb mini-GBIC), and the SG500X supports 10Gb fiber connections.
We also have recently come out with the SG500XG, which can do 10Gb on ethernet ports when you use Cat6A cable.  I understand you may not be looking to upgrade just yet, so Link Aggregation is probably your best option with the switches you have now, but take a look at the post I linked first to see if it will really give you the improvement you are looking for.

  • SRW2024 Mini-GBIC modules

I have a number of SRW2024 switches and several Mini-GBIC modules for them. Are these switches compatible with other brands of Mini-GBIC modules or do I need to use the Linksys modules (MGBSX1) only? Thanks!

LouisWu,  did you find out if any of your other SFPs worked in the Linksys switch?
do you get any error messages when you insert a 3rd party SFP?

  • What is the part number for the mini gbic?

I need to replace a mini gbic from a MDS-9124. I tried very hard to find the part number but it is not clear. There are 2 part numbers writen in the gbic, but I could not confirm any of it. The part numbers that is writen are DSSFP4GSW-4 and the other is 102195-01. If someone can help I would really appreciate.

At the switch, you could use the << show int fc1/x transceiver details >> command which would give you the programmed part-number.
The DSS... sticker is likely the Cisco partnumber.
It's perhaps a good habit to do at least once execute a full "show tech" of each (new_ switch and save the output. This would give you all the (least) information for the future. . . reproducing is always difficult if the part or switch is not available (anymore) ;) .

  • Cisco mini-GBIC replacing "RJ45 to Optic converter"

    Hi all
First post, so please be gentle...
We are planning to change the current infrastructure of one of our clients.
As part of this process we are replacing “RJ45 to Optic Fibre converters” with “Cisco mini-GBICs”.
In the attached PDF file you will see 2 examples.
Example 1 represents the current client setup
In Example 2 we have replaced the branch office “RJ45 to Optic Fibre converter” with a Cisco MGBSX1 connected to the Cisco SG300
However this does not work, the Cisco SG300 never boots up correctly and after connecting the Fibre to the Mini-GBIC, the Cisco switch System LED just keeps flashing.
I suspect for this to work we also need a Mini-GBIC connected to the HP Procurve2510 replacing the “RJ45 to Optic Fibre converter” in the Main office!
Is anyone able to confirm this?
If this is not the problem, what else could we be doing wrong?
    Cheers

Is your converter 100 Mbps? If so, that'll give you an unsuccessful setup.
Fiber transceivers are fixed speed and have no autosense feature or speed selection - they must be the same speed at each end - 1 Gbps given your use of the mini-GBIC you cited.
The HP switch can use a mini-GBIC in either of the dual personality ports and, in your setup, that's what you'd need. All of the regular copper ports are strictly 10/100 Mbps.
Your fiber link also needs to be multimode and no more than 500m per this Cisco info page.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • The difference between SFP+ and X2

    Dear Expert,
I need to know what is the difference between SFP+ and X2! and can I use SFP+ card and module instead of X2?
    Thanks,
    Mohammad Saeed

    Hi,
They are both used for 10Gig interfaces.  The difference is the connector type.
SFP+ is LC and X2 is SC.
You can not put an SFP+ into an X2 slot or X2 optic into a SFP+.

  • HDMI, Mini Display Port and Mountain Lion

    Hello,
After reading about numerous issues concerning the Mini Display Port and Mountain Lion, I'm trying to discuss it here with you all to see if there is any solution.
I have a MacBook Pro (2009), and used it with my TV (HDMI cable + Mini display port adaptor) with Plex media center back when it was on OS X Lion. It was very convenient because as a portable computer, it could easily be set near the TV and allow the use of a remote to sit in the couch and stream media from the Time Capsule… without the help of any expansive box. Perfect setup I've had for over a year.
The thing is, since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, when I try to connect the MacBook Pro to the TV, the screen turns blue as if it was calculating the resolution of the monitor so… ok. Until it comes back, and nothing changed either on the MacBook Pro screen or on the TV.
Harware side, I've tried with the computer open, closed, I've checked every port and connection on both computer, TV and adaptor.
Software side, what I find really annoying in Mountain Lion is that they completely ditched every monitor setting as long as nothing is connected — and even if the Mini DP is connected… the Mac thinks it's not. I even tried to reset the PRAM. This is a nightmare.
I've tried to do the same with my iMac (mid 2011), and it all worked properly. What I can't explain is why it works on my iMac and not on the MBP… as they have the same configuration !
I don't know if Apple is outcasting old devices so people buy new Apple stuff or if they ditched the HDMI out on certain (old) devices on purpose so users replace it by the new airplay mirroring feature and buy the Apple TV. I won't, because let's say it's a total crap compared to other media center solutions. And I'm bored of Apple.
Please, HELP NEEDED ! Has anyone had the same issue ? I bet you have ! Now how can we solve that ?
    Thank you for your time.

EDIT : stopped working on iMac too… then update 10.8.2 fixed the issue. Now it works. Thanks Apple for temporarily removing some features ! It's just so ANNOYING.
Hope you gonna stay with the few we have left on Mac and stop removing things randomly. Not event talking about the pro environment (designers, developpers, etc.) that is almost gone. 2 years and our macs will be tablets. Careful with the old clients… it's been almost 10 years I'm on a Mac and I've never been so unhappy.

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

Can some body recomend an adapter cable that plugs into the audio (mid 2009 MacBookPro 13") and mini display port and outputs to HDMI with audio and video all together for a TV?  I would rather not run a separate audio cable in addition to the HDMI cable.
