Mini hang ups

Hello,
Upon occasion my mini has been hanging up after a mouse click, I see the whirling color wheel and then I have to exit Safari and start over again. Using disc repair without the installation disc, it still hangs up. I have McAfee internet security.
How can I resolve this problem?
Thanks,
Lee

Uninstall McAfee, it is not needed in OS X and most likely doing more harm than good.

then if you must, use > ClamXav

  • App store hang-ups

I've only had my iPad for a week but have already had a couple of problems with the app store. This morning, when I tried to download a couple of apps, the waiting box would just show up on the home screen with a blank loading bar. The same was true for an update I tried to install. Similarly, last week at the app store, anytime I tried to navigate somewhere I would just get a white screen with "Loading" and the spinning rays with no progress. In both cases, things seemed back to normal 15 minutes later or so. Also, in both cases, there were no problems with my wifi - I checked that. Are these kinds of hang ups and freezes normal for the store, or could there be some sort of problem with my iPad causing this?

I did a reset, which didn't immediately solve anything. The problem just disappeared about 15 minutes after it started. I wouldn't think it's a hardware problem since other apps and Internet connectivity all seemed to be working at top speed while the app store problem was happening. I guess I was curious if other people had experienced app problems in their time with their ipads.

Have recently reformatted out of desperation!
This machine continues to regularly hang up despite the best efforts of HP's online help and a complete reformat.  Is this processor just a dog?  I've had numerous HP computers, but this is the first time I've not purchased an Intel product.

    Hi,
Please explain what you mean by "hang-ups"?
What type of application causes the "hang-ups"?
Did you make any hardware changes to your PC?
Did you do a clean Window 7 installation or just used the HP recovery disks?
    Did you run diagnostics?

  • What is wrong with FF it keeps closing up and numerous hang ups awful

I have so many problems with this browser - they just keep multiplying. Today, Firefox started closing by itself without my doing anything. This is added to the constant script running errors and other hang ups that constantly slow down my work and are driving me crazy. Maybe I'd just better go back to IE? I've tried your help "fixes" and they don't. Very frustrating.

    Did Firefox crash?

    2. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo.

  • Mac Mini hangs on boot with grey Screen. No response to Keyboard

    Hello,
yesterday my Mac Mini (C2Duo, fifth generation unibody) startet to behave strangely. First thing was that it was not responding to the mouse(connected throught the keyboard)
I replaced the mouse and everything seemed to be ok.
I then did the latest update available on Mountain Lion and went home.
When I came back this morning, the Mac Mini hang with grey screen. I restarted. Again grey screen.
    Chime comes. Then nothing.
Tried everything from http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570 but nothing worked. The Mac Mini does not seem to be responding
to any keyboard command to enter safe mode, select boot device etc. No firmware password has been set.
Any help/ suggestions would be appreciated.
    Yours,
    Andreas

Have you reset the SMC, then held down the mouse button while restarting to get the CD out?
    Reset SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Mini hangs at boot up screen

My mini hangs at the grey bootup screen and will not continue beyond it.
I recently had an old Macbook pro hardrive attached to the Mini via USB to transfer some data.
This old drive also had a recent version of OSX on it but I never booted to this drive.
The Mini read the drive, I transferred the data, shut it down, and the next day it would not boot and would only hang on the grey boot up screen.
It won't boot up whether or not I have the old Macbook drive attached or not.
    I tried a PRAM reset.
Did I somehow make the Mini look for a wrong boot drive and is there anyhting I can do to fix or reset it without having to reformat?

It was purchased in August 2012 and I'm pretty sure it's dual i5's with 8GB ram running the latest OS.
I don't have the recover disk at the moment as the computer was recently loaned to me. Does this typically come on thumbdrive with the computer?  (If so I cn have the owner search for it but he say's he does not recall it.)
It has no drive for CD/DVD reinstall.
If I had an external USB drive with the same OS on it would I be able to boot to that drive? And from there backup the main drive to the USB drive and then reformat the main drive if necessary?

  • Mac Mini hangs on startup screen

Need help, my mini hangs on the startup screen the dial benieth the apple logo spins, but nothing else happens. I was having difficulty connecting to the internet before the issue started, tried to open internet connect, when it wouldn't open I tried a restart, now all I get is the startup screen.
I'm really concerned with un-backed up data, any ideas of how to get in and backup before making any drastic changes?
I can take to the apple store tomorrow, so I don't want to do anything that would potentially lose data or make things worse.
Please help if you know what is going on. Thanks.

Whatever else, do not, at this time, attempt an erase and install, since this would delete all your existing data in the attempt to get a bootable system back in operation.
Since your primary concern is your data, backing this up is the first priority. To do this, you could use firewire target disk mode if you have another Mac available (as previously suggested). However, if you do not have another Mac to hand for this, the safest way to deal with the situation with least risk to existing data is to use an external drive, preferably connected via Firewire, and install MacOS on that, then boot the system to it by holding the Option key down during startup. That would give you a booted system from which you can then examine the internal drive.
There is a possibility that your internal drive will then not be visible, which would indicate either serious directory damage or a hardware issue. Disk Utility can be used to check the drive if it is visible, and even attempt a repair if it is. However if it fails, you will then need to use commercial software such as ProSoft Data Rescue II (an excellent data recovery application) to retrieve data from the drive, or Allsoft's DiskWarrior to attempt a repair on the drive, being aware that even though often effective, there is a risk with tools such as DiskWarrior that in using them they can effect a repair on the drive that makes it viable again, but loose data in the process, thus backing up or retrieving data first is usually the wisest course.
As to the drive itself, it is possible the boot issue being experienced is due to a hardware problem with the drive which would mean a replacement is needed. This is not all that common however. It is more likely to be the result of directory structure errors, in which case Disk Utility or DiskWarrior may be able to resolve the problem, leaving the drive functional without any further action or with little more than an archive and install. However, not all such errors are repairable, and hence an erase and install may be needed.
One way or another, do not attempt to write anything to the drive or change any data on it until you have either retrieved/backed up your data, or decided not to do so. If the data structure is damaged, any and every attempt to modify the data on the drive can render it harder to recover data from it intact.

  • HP 4540S sudden freezes, hang ups etc

Hello,  i have quite a serious problem, and to be honest i can't really tell which would be the cause. My laptop keeps having immense lag or hang ups short time after i boot up the windows. The issue escalated proggresively ,  i mean from the point it could barely run a game ( Counter Strike Global Offensive) to be more exact  , the hdd disk was 100% active like it was intensively used. Then it went to the point when the disk led was completly lit when in idle.  And at the final stage it just couldn't boot up my windows again.
At first i suspected that is the hard disk and i replaced it . After a short time , couple of minutes, after i finished installing windows on my new hard disk, same symptoms showed up. Windows becomes unresponding, no matter if its during a process or in idle, the disk light is completly on. This lasts for like 2 minutes then it works normally for like 30 secs or 1 minute at most then it hangs up again. I did various checks, with the HP utility tool , the short and the long test , no hdd errors could be found ( it was quite expected given the fact this disk was brand new).  I have no idea where the problem might come from . I don't think it's the motherboard controller( or at least i hope so, even the problem looks like it is a bad controller) .
What is interesting that i managed to update the bios to it's last version and the symptoms changed a bit. When the laptop hangs up the hdd disk is no longer lit, but the freeze is quite more aggresive. By aggresive i mean the explorer is completly unresponsive, the waiting time for things to come back to normal is higher, like 4-5 minutes, and the time is normally operating is somewhere around 10-20 seconds, half a minute if i'm lucky .
    Laptop : HP ProBook 4540S
OS : Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
    Current Bios:     F.60 A                 15 Jan 2015
    Previous Bios: F.50 REV A            8 Aug 2014
i can provide hard drives models too , the old and the new one if needed but i don't think it would be necessary.
What i've tried: Using the HP tool to diagnose memory and hard drive( both short and long DSM tests)
    all tests where successfully passed
Using the Laptop on battery only or with battery removed . The symptomes were exactly the same so i don't think it's a power source issue
The laptop hasn't been dropped, nor opened before, didn't spit any kind of liquid on it. etc etc.
    Warranty has expired
Fun fact is that i  could make my old hard drive functional  again after formatting on a different computer and using on it. So it's clearly not the disk, but something is, and i really hope you guys can help me out.  Any idea what might cause this?

    Hello StriickeN,
I understand you’re stating your computer freezes periodically, is that correct? I will be happy to help you with this issue.
Can you please provide the full make and model of the computer you have, if you are unsure where to locate that information have a look at this link.

  • Qosmio x300 intermittent hang-ups

I have a new Qosmio x300 and have been having the same issue as described here:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=42058&tstart=0
The computer locks up and if sound was playing, it loops very rapidly for about 5 seconds.
It happens as well when the computer is idling,
If video is running, it freezes for the duration of the hang-up, also with a rapid audio loop, then after 5 seconds the sound resumes, but the video "smears" for another 5 seconds.
If a game is running, the game hangs up with a rapid audio loop. In worst case, the game also crashes after the hang-up has passed.
I have not been able to localize what has been causing these hang-ups, as they are not listed in the event manager at all.
I will also not purchase any additional third party software to track the source of the hang-ups, as I have already paid 1300 Euros for this notebook. If it has defect parts, I will be taking it back to the store I purchased it at for a full refund.
I would however, prefer to find what is causing the issue so that a solution can be found not only for myself, but all users who have a Qosmio with the same symptoms.
*edit* I have begun to check the hard drive with the HD Tune free version. After 25 minutes, the Temperature went from 42 degrees Celcius to 56 degrees. I do expect the drive to heat up during an intensive disc and error-check, but I thought I would include all information that could be relevant to finding the solution here as well.
The HD Check completed successfully with no indication that the Hard Drives have any problems. The heat also returned to 42 degrees after the test completed.
Message was edited by: devJarrod - HD Check completed

I have the same problem with my Qosmio X300 (PQX32E-04H02WGR). Anytime I'm playing games there is a blackscreen and a tuneloop.
I wrote a email to the toshiba-service in germany and they told me to make a new installation of windows, to install the new bios 2.1 and the new beta driver from nvidia. Even this all did not solve the problem.
So I ring up the german hotline and they told me that there is nothing more to do and that they don't know that problem. They sayed I could try playing the games in a reduced resolution and perhaps this could solve the problem!!!??? Yes... I buy a very expensive gamer-notebook to play with it in a reduced resolution - nice idear.
After I told them that I think it could be an overheating-problem they want to get the notebook to find it out on my own risk (I have to pay a service-charge if it is no overheating problem).
    We will see...

  • Hang ups and jerkiness in iMovie HD export to mini dv camera

I have a big problem-- while I am trying to export a TV show created in *_iMovie HD 6.0.3 (267.2)*_ to my *Sony DCR TRV-900*, which I have done many times.
Suddenly, there is jerkiness upon export to my camera. My iMoive video which plays back normally on the coputer looks jerky and almost slo mo while going to camera, and is also like than when the mini dv is played back. However the audio quality seems to be ok on the mini dv.
FYI, this show is made up of a series of Full Quality Quicktime chunks (ie individual scenes that I made and exported thru iMovie as Full Quality QuickTime, and then re-imported as individual Quicktime video chunks so not to tax the exporting capacity of iMovie too much).
The show is about 26 minutes, and the size of the iMovie file is about 26 gigs. The file resides on a Maxtor external drive with firewire 400.
I have plugged and replugged, turned camera on and off, and changed mini dv tapes a couple of times...
Does anybody out there know what is up with this jerky outputting problem?
    Thanks
    Michael in LA

Not sure why you should have this problem now, but you can export the entire movie as a new Full Quality Quicktime, and then reimport that into a new iMovie and export that new iMovie to your camcorder.
Just be sure you have enough free space on your hard drive where your iMovie is located.
.....that MIGHT be the problem with the jerking......how much free space do you have?

  • Mac Mini Hangs.  Can't figure out why.

Okay, so, the Mini, which is about 6 months old is hanging. It has been for a while now. It runs fine, but then at some point (I'm never using it when it does this) the **** thing hangs. MOST of the time it will be in a screen saver (I thought a 3rd party screen saver was causing this, so I switched to the Apple RSS feed one that came with OS X.)
The real problem is that I cannot find a single crash log that states what's going on. So, it's like the Mac isn't even writing a crashlog when this happens. The modified dates on EVERY CRASH REPORT is months ago. So the issues that keep happening are not being recorded.
Unless this has somethign to do with it, which came from the console.log

This USB problem may very well be the backup batterry? I don't know, I can't tell which port is port 2 on the hub (it's generic and has two rows of two ports, four ports all together.)
Looking at the data that I do have, is there anything anyone can tell that's going on? Generally when a Mac has problems, I can figure it out, but this is driving me absolutely nuts since I have no log to trace.
Thank you very much for any help.
P.S. Bluetooth is off (I thought that may have been the problem, it apparently isn't), RAM checks okay. HD checks okay. AirPort works fine. This has been happening since 10.4.3

Okay, I think the USB was one issue. However, now that that has been solved, SystemUIserver, and lookupd are having issues. For example, in console logs I constantly find this:
    Jan 27 17:56:10 Navi-Ultra launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[67]: exited abnormally: Hangup
I am certain this is the cause of the problems. I just downloaded the AIRPORTUPDATE2005-01 as indicated in another thread somewhere around here, and have just installed it (but haven't restarted)
Anyone know why that happnes, what's causing this?
Further more, There are tons of things I'm not liking in the logs for today. I never had this problem on my Powermac G4, in the almost 4 years I've owned it. Only on this Mac mini...

  • Import to mini hangs. Why?

    Morning,
I've got a 4G mini that I'm having problems with. I've done the reset/restore. After that I try to import a playlist. It will do appox. 250 songs quite quickly, then it slows to a crawl, then it just hangs. I then "tell" it to stop the import (x on song title) after giving it more time. The pinwheel just keeps spinning. I have to do a force quit which says itunes is not responding. I then start the process all over again, but try importing in smaller blocks of songs. Once again it gets to a certain point and hangs.
    Any help would be appreciated.
PS I've switched usb and firewire cables

I have just overcome a similar problem myself & it appears to be a bug in iTunes 7.02.
I recently had to reinstall iTunes which meant it recognised my wife's iPod Mini as an alien iPod and asked to erase it, to which I clicked OK. Then iTunes asked to create a playlist for it because it could not load all my library onto it. Since I had already created a playlist, I clicked Cancel. At this point, the menu's reappeared on the Mini, but iTunes seemed to think it was still attached i.e. the two ends seemed to have gotten out of sync. I then set up iTunes to sync my pre-built playlist to the Mini and started synchronising the Mini. After a short while, I got the fault you did.
After this, the iPod is no longer recognised by iTunes or the PC. I tried the iPod on a Mac Mini - still not recognised. Then I tried my laptop - the same story. The iPod, however, seems to operate normally except that only a few music files were in its playlists.
I then reckoned if I could get the iPod to reboot by pressing and holding Select and Menu, it might clear the problem. After trying this a few times (our iPod Mini always takes several attempts to get it to reboot for some reason), I got the Apple logo and found that Windows now saw the iPod and so did iTunes. This time, when iTunes asked to create a playlist, I clicked OK and let it sync up with its playlist. I then changed the playlist back to my playlist and synced again and this worked. Now all is well.
So, in conclusion, it looks like a bug in iTunes puts the iPod into an inconsistent state where the USB interface is not working properly. You can fix it by rebooting the iPod and letting iTunes do what it wants. It looks like the last iTunes update had minimal testing.
Has anyone noticed that the iTunes updates seem to have stopped recently even though there have been lots of problem with 7.02?
    Mike

  • Mac Mini hangs at hardware boot and at wake-up

I've got a brand new Mac Mini Intel Core 2 duo 2GHz with 2GB RAM.
50% of the time, when I power it on, there is no "start" sound and
the screen remains dark. The "power on" LED is however switched on.
After a force shutdown, I can start it fully OK. The same behaviour
is observed in 50% of the wake up from sleep: LED on no longer blinking
and dark screen. Force shutdown and power on again solves the case.
I've already reset the PRAM twice without any visible effect.
I've tried the SMC reset procedure also without any visible effect.
The Apple Hardware Test detects no hardware failure and the disk
verification ends up with no problem detection.
The Mac Mini is connected with a 2-year old Eizo L557 flat screen
with a resolution 1280x1024. It worked fine with an older G4 Mac Mini.
I have an Apple pro keyboard in version 4.10 and a 3-button+scroll wheel
    Logitech wired optical mouse.
Once started, the Mac simply works fine.
Does anyone have a clue what the problem could be ?
    Many thanks in advance

I have the same problem I am hung up right now color wheel spinning around, color wheel cursor, and I have a dark screen I guess I have to hold in the button or something to restart? What do you think? My macMINI is only 2 wks old has 1 gig ram its the 2.0 gHz intel C2D I'm going in tomorrow get upgr extra gig makes 2 gig. I'm not really insightful with this machine how do I turn it off or reboot to get out of this hang'n effect? Do I need to optimize the HD how do I do that I'm from win platform is there a scan/error fix disk / defrag procedure or disk clean we do on the mac what is the procedure on this. It seems your suggesting maybe mem error causing this hang'n on the mac, is that right? Even though I've had the cmptr only two wks I've only used it 4 to 5 days since I was over seas for 12 days.
