Mini & iSight success

I'm a new mini owner after having replaced my five year old PowerMac G5 that suffered an apparent logic board issue last month. Everything transitioned well with the exception of my external iSight camera due to the lack of a FW400 port. I purchased a NewerTechnology Voyager Q dock as part of this transition, hoping to also take advantage of its multiple connection options, but found that the mini would not recognize the camera using the dock; it had no problem with a DV camcorder via the dock's FW400 port.
I thought about trying a 6 to 9 pin adapter for the mini's FW800 port but read of mixed results with the iSight so I tried a cheap 6 to 9 pin cable instead - success! One downside is that the iSight takes the sole FW port on the mini meaning that I either need to connect the dock via USB or swap the camera's and dock's FW cables to the mini as needed. The other problem is the camera mount; I'm using an aluminum cinema display magnetic mount which doesn't like the "fat" plug of the cheap cable, so I've got the cable jammed in the mount by friction in an inelegant way right now.
Anyway, it's only been a few weeks but I already love our mini! I do miss the G5 in some ways but certainly not the vortex created by all of its fans.

(1) For many of us, external iSight can be picky about sharing Firewire connections, regardless of how it is connected to either 6 pin or 9 pin ports.
For more info: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
Best thing is to try as many options as are available to see if you can make it work for you.
(2) Here are some options for ways to connect your FW400 external iSight to a FW800 Mac port:
• This Firewire 400-800 cable can work: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A
• Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097"
• To use your FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

  • Mac Mini & iSight

I have two Mac Minis, each connected to different iSight cameras. I use the iSight and Mac Mini to connect and talk to friends using Skype.
While talking, I frequently loose the mirophone function of the iSight. The solution is to unplug the iSight from the Mac Mini; sometimes only a reboot resolves.
This happens with both computers and both iSight cameras. Therefore, the likelihood of a "random" hardware problem is very small.
I am surprised that no one seems to raise this issue and all behave as if the iSight works properly.
    Does anyone have any idea?

    Hello all,
Only those who are using two Mac minis can have "exactly" the same problem as Vitor.
If you do not have a suggested solution for Vitor, I suggest that you post your problem in your own new thread. That way, your question can get the individual attention that it deserves.
Having come this far, if your testing shows that your problem is with your mini or your iSight, and if you have tried all the suggestions offered to Vitor, take your mini, your iSight. and your Firewire cable to your Apple-Authorized Service Provider. There are no user serviceable parts inside iSight. I suggest you take your mini, too, because your mini may need internal hardware repair.
If your testing shows that the problem is with Skype rather than with your iSight, you can take advantage of Skype's comprehensive Help features. For instance, one of Skype's Troubleshooter topics is "My mic is not working, no one can hear me."
If Skype's Troubleshooter does not help you with your Skype-specific problem, some of the other Skype Help options will. If:(1) you have tried all the suggestions offered to Vitor, and if
    (2) your iSight works with applications other thank Skype, but
    (3) your problems with Skype continue, your problem is with Skype, not with iSight.
Try searching for answers in the Skype Forums.
If you cannot find answers with a search, post your Skype-specific problem in the Skype for Mac OS X forum. You may get better suggestions from OS X users who also use Skype.
If the Skype forums fail you, too, Contact Skype Customer Support for a direct response to your particular problem from Skype Technical Support.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • 40" samsung + mini+ isight picture?

After spendig 4 hours at CC hooking up my g4 Ibook and their mac mini to both a 32"& 40" samsng lcd.. the picture
was awesome!! Used the vga dongle to the vga in on the samsung. Pictures, slideshows, web & E mail text very clear.
Now the question. I video conf. every week using my 12" G4
Ibook. We are both on broadband using Mac's & Isight's. I have very good images even at full screen on my I book, not as good as the reduced screen size but still good. Given the resolution of the 32" or 40" Samsungs is 1368x768 somewhat the same as my Ibook and also the mini.. would the isight images on the LCDS be way too blurry at the increased screen size or be somewhat the same as I am getting on my Ibook?
I am going to get the mini this week W/ 1 gig ram.

    Can it be done?
I just love the look of the iSight.  Can it be hooked up to new Mac mini with FW 800.  I read 400 to 800?
Any one doing it?  Let know your thoughts.
Thank you all for you help and have a great day.

    Yes.
All you need do is follow the instructions in the iSight User Guide (Manual) that came with your old external iSight.
To connect to your old Firewire 400 iSight to your new mini's Firewire 800 port, you will need a FW400-800 adapter or cable.   If you have trouble, your connection is the first thing to check.  Troubleshoot using http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090.
Be aware of Possible Conflicts with Firewire iSight. If you encounter such problems with your mini system and cannot resolve them, you can workaround the Firewire issues by using a Mac compatible USB external camera.

Of course, you are free to buy whatever you choose.  However, if your preference is based primarily on appearance, you might be interested in the Liquid Digital webcam .  Although it looks similar to the long-discontinued external iSight, it offers USB's less troublesome connection, a higher hardware resolution sensor than the old iSight's 640x480, and a new cam warranty.

  • External iSight Camera not working after update installed?

a couple of weeks ago I turned on iChat and up popped a window that said i needed to update the (external) iSight camera i had plugged into my minimac (firewire). followed the instructions and did just that. little greenlight glowed happily, rotated lens and opened iChat--little green light blinked off and then iChat showed that the camera was not turned on. tried turning it on and off by rotating the lens, unplugging firewire and also restarted computer...no change. looked for update to firmware and downloaded 1.0.3, only to be told it does not work with OS 10.4 (bummer).
had a back up camera, plugged that in and no problems...trouble is roomate recently got the pop-up screen when he was using it and, thinking he was doing me a favor, 'updated'...so now have 2 cameras that do not work and no answers to be found on the posts or the apple support site.
    any ideas?

    Welcome to Discussions, johnboysf
    (1) Assuming you are not ANY having other problems with your Macs and that your Mac OS X Maintenance is up to date, you can concentrate on the iSight part of your system(s).
Restart your Mac with no unnecessary peripherals connected and try the suggestions here:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
    (2) If your iSight still does not work with any app, check for Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight.
    (3) I cannot tell whether your mini is an iNtel or PPC. Apply the appropriate Combo Updater as follows if you still have the problem:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • For PPC, download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
    • For iNtel, download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (Intel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (4) If your problem persists after trying all of the above, the problem may be with your iSight itself. The fact that you got that notification after you had previously been using your iSight successfully under OS 10.4.x, and the fact that the updater ran for you and your roommate under OS 10.4.x, makes me think there may be something wrong with your iSights. The Tiger (10.4.x) OS includes all the necessary earlier update (including iSight Firmware 1.0.3) and installs the Firmware update if necessary at the time you installed Tiger or first connected your iSight. Therefore, the Firmware update should be unnecessary and should not have been identified by Software Update... as being needed (unless someone has improperly thrown away some OS X files.)
As you note, iSight Firmware 1.0.3 will not run except on Mac OS X v10.3.7-10.3.9 (or, it now seems, if something is wrong.) If you have access to a Firewire-equipped Mac that is using one of these OSs, you can try applying the update to your iSights using that Mac.
    (5) If you cannot find a Mac that is still using Panther, or if applying the update does not resolve your problem, contact your Apple Authorized Service Provider for professional service. Ask your AASP if he wants to see your Macs, too, to check whether their software has been modified or damaged.

  • ISight microphone no longer available in Audio Preferences or iChat

I have an iSight camera that was working with my Mac Mini when I first got the camera. But somewhere along the line the microphone vanished from the list of audio sources available in the Audio Preferences, or iChat, or anywhere else.
    The camera works fine.
I just can't access the microphone.
The camera and microphone itself work fine when plugged into another computer. I even sent the iSight back to Apple, but the one I got back has the same problem, so it's something about my machine or the software environment.
I have been upgrading my software regularly, but I don't recall any correlation between an upgrade and the microphone stopping working. However, since I wasn't using the iSight regularly I could have missed this.
I see the Apple_iSight and AppleFWAudio kexts loaded:

... the microphone vanished from the
list of audio sources available in the Audio
    Preferences, or iChat, or anywhere
    else.Does that really mean that
when iSight is plugged in it is not an available
choice in the System Preferences... > Sound >
    Input device list?
Yes, that's correct. The iSight is not visible in the System Preferences... > Sound > Input device list.
If so you may have a faulty Firewire cable.
    I don't think so, because:
    * This iSight works fine -- video and audio -- on another machine.
    * The video and audio travels over the same data lines in the Firewire cable, and the video works fine. Cable problems would affect both audio and video.
Does "or iChat" mean, when iChat AV is the active app
and iSight is plugged in, that "iSight Built-in" is
not available in the iChat > Preferences... >
    Video > Microphone: Choices Bar?
Yes, that's correct. The iSight doesn't appear in that list of choices.
When iSight is plugged in and iChat AV is the active
app, is there a tick (check) mark next to iChat >
    Video > Microphone Enabled ?
Yes, but the menu choice is greyed out.
What other apps are "anywhere else": iMovie,
QuickTime Pro, what? Please list all apps you know
    have the problem.
iMovie HD: can record from iSight, but there is no audio.
Garage Band: iSight is not available among the choices of audio inputs.
AU Lab (in Developer Tools): iSight is not available among the choices of audio inputs.
If you have added anything new to your Mac, consider
    Possible hardware or software
    conflicts.
Aren't there useful diagnostic logs somewhere? I'm used to copious debug output (from drivers, especially) when problems occur on my Linux systems. Is there somewhere to turn up the verbosity of the debug messages?
I sometimes get the feeling that the Mac is trying to hide important details about problems from me, and treating me like a baby. I mean, I have and know how to use a kernel debugger (though not yet on the Mac), oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers; I should be able to get the information I need to diagnose problems, rather than trying shotgun solutions.
If you haven't kept your Mac OS X maintenance up to
    date, try that now.
I have repaired permissions; I will try a disk repair although I have no reason to believe that there are any file system problems (again, there are no debug messages in the logs that would indicate something like that).
Consider applying the 10.4.5 Combo Updater using the
method in How I Update My Mac OS X.
    I'll try this too.
If you do not get help here or in Mac mini
Discussions, my only remaining suggestion is that you
take your Mac mini, iSight, and Firewire cable for a
professional check by your Apple Service Tech.
My nearest Apple Service Tech is over 50 miles away.
I'd prefer to find a fix here if I could.
    Thanks for your help,
    Ned

  • ISight no longer working after 10.4.5 update

I have been using iSight successfully for about a year or more. About a week ago or so, I did the system upgrade to 10.4.5. I used Mac utilities to "fix" the permissions afterwards as usual. My son and daughter (one in Australia and one in New York) did the same. Now we are unable to use iSight for either video or audio. We get the message that the other person (the answerer) has failed to answer, even though we know this isn't true. None of us has done anything else to the computer that would warrant this meltdown. Does anyone else know of problems with 10.4.5? Also, how can one "go back" to 10.4.4. We assume iSight would work fine then.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hello, chessie1. Before you go to the trouble backing down to 10.4.4, try applying the 10.4.5 Combo Update as suggested in How I Update My Mac OS X.
I, my regular chat buddies, and most of the iChat AV 3 users with whom I have tested are all using 10.4.5 with fine results. You should not need to retreat to 10.4.4.
If the combo updater does not completely resolve your problem, you might want to try the other relevant suggestions from Help for iChat AV 3 Problems and How to get iChat AV working again.

Not yet...the L.A. connection works ~16 hrs./day in public TV now (the best post-production producer in that city, imho...and having worked for her as an audio post guy on Rescue 911 for 5 1/2 years I think I'd know <G> Oh, we were married too <GGG>).
The WA. connection raise organic veggies and sells 'em on weekends, as well as 'kettle corn'. Peak season at the moment for the veg stuff, not much time for Mac recreation. Come about Oct. they can relax, and use the MacBook Pro 17" as their portal on the world. Smart folks, but the old expression holds true...What do you get if you work your fingers to the bone? Bony fingers They really work hard.
Myself, I like the mini, but heck, I'm supposed to have the slowest Mac??? <GGG> Ordered the MacBook Pro 17" from Macconnection, gonna send the mini & iSight external to the other L.A. person. I'm hoping all goes well as regards iChat/video. Did I mention how irritating this forum is if one chooses to edit a post? Consider that done

  • Mac-mini "detect displays" where is the individual model's DDC info stored?

I have a dilemna- I just bought a new 20" NEC LCD screen that has all sorts of bells and whistles. It's 1600 x 1050 native, and has DVI, analog VGA, YUV, compostie, and RF inputs. It is supposed to have a scalar that supports a multitude of resolutions including 1920 x 1080i.
I bought it for a system of which has (2) mini-macs through a DVI KVM. I had one mini-mac successfully read the DDC info from the montior, and it provides a wide range of supported resolutions (including 1600 x 1050). All resolutions listed are progressive (no interlaced options)
When I switched my KVM to the 2nd mini-mac it was stuck in 1024 x 768, and that was the highest res that the display preferences gave me (probably because that's what it read off the DDC of the KVM switch?). When I hit the "detect displays" button, it proceeded to update the list of supported resolutions, but a very bizzarre thing happened: It did the opposite of the first mini-mac, and only listed "interlaced" video resolutions (with the exception of 1280 x 720p and 640 x 480p). The list was all 'broadcast-style" resolutions.
The profile for this montior on this mini-mac is now stuck in this mode, and I cannot get the desired 1600 x 1050 resolution that is native to the monitor. I've tried everything I could think of including ditching plists, clearing the PRAM, tricking the mini-mac, etc....
It's almost as if a mini-mac stores a registry of the monitor's DDC information onto the video card 'permanently' the first time, and never allows to re-read the DDC info again???
Does anyone know how to clear this registry?
The other clue to this whole thing is that the monitor has an option where you can set the DVI IN to either "DVI-PC" or "DVI-HD". The fussy mini-mac displays nothing in "DVI-PC" mode, and the behaving mini-mac displays in both modes. It's possible that the monitor was in "DVI-HD" when I hit the "detect displays" button on the fussy mini-mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, I wish I had your set up to play with. I could probably learn a lot from it
When DDC is read by the Mac, and when users make resolution settings based on it, the resultant settings are stored in a file called com.apple.windowserver.plist. There is one such file in /Library/Preferences but there may also be occurances of it for each user account on machines set up for multiple users AFAIK. They are plain text files so you can actually read them with TextEdit or other text editors.
The simplest thing to do might be to copy the file from the mini giving the desired behavior and use it to replace the file on the mini with the bad behavior. I don't think there is any machine specific info in the file, so I believe the file should be portable in this manner. On the other hand, this may not work because when you restart the misbehaving mini it might regenerate a "bad" windowserver.plist file again and replace the one you just copied over. Although I don't think that will be the case. Can't hurt to try. You might want to keep the older pref file around and rename it to "preferences.old". There is a procedure outlined here that is similar although it is based on doing everyting from starting into console mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
As for why one mini is reading EDID one way and the other reads altogether something else, that's a really good question and one that I hope you are able to track down the answer to and report your findings back here. It could provide a lot of insight into other types of problems people have reported on this forum. Perhaps it relates to the DVI-PC or DVI-HD setting you refered to, but I have never known any other display that actively changed its EDID. EDID is always fixed I thought. Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

  • Thunderbolt mac mini doesn't work

    Good evening.
I cannot see my MacBook Air SSD, in target disk, on my Mac Mini mid-2011.
I tried it with other Mac with success.
I try too to use thunderbolt Ethernet adapter on my Mac Mini without success.
My Mac mini is on Mac Os X.7.5.
    Thanks.

I just want to use my thunderbolt port on my mac mini and it doesn't work.
I know built in options of my Mac mini.
i said just that i made two tests :
with an thunderbolt -> Ethernet adapter,
with my MacBook Air in disk target mode.
    All were without success.
I tested disk target mode of ma MacBook Air with an other MAc with success.
    Thanks.

  • Mac mini:  Will not reboot

I have a late 2005 Mac Mini (not intel). The other day I disconnected my ipod accidently while it was updating and ever since I'm having issues.
Mini froze up and then wouldn't boot. Finally go it to boot up once then screen froze. Then wouldn't boot again.
Tried the install cd, got to the desktop and installer but everytime I clicked something, such as the utility, etc noting would respond.
I ran the hardware test and got that there was a hard drive error 2STF/8/3:ATA-100-ata-6-MASTER. I did read that with Disk warrior I can still get around this.
Just got Disk Warrior and put in, held down C started up, heard lots of noise like the mini was reading the disc, then after about 2 minutes the mini just stays on the gray screen with the mac logo and spinning gray wheel thing. Listening closely to the drive it sounds like it is hanging...I can hear a repeating sound ever 3 or 4 seconds.
    Is warrior working?
Can I still get my data off the HDD? Already tried target disk mode and although the firewire symbol comes up the mini doesn't show up on my desktop.

Hi mmh. It sounds to me as though your hard drive has failed, and I don't know where you read that DW should be able to "get around that." DW has no ability to repair hardware. Still, Craig's suggestion to call or email Alsoft is a good one. Alsoft may know exactly what the AHT error message means, and whether there's anything to be done about it other than replacing the drive.
To eject the DW disc, hold down the mouse button while you power-up the Mini, and keep holding it down until the disc pops out. This should work whether or not the Mini ever successfully boots: it's a hardware command that's executed before loading begins.
Craig's comment about the optical drive firmware has nothing at all to do with your problem — it's just something you can consider after you solve the problem.

  • Mini player for video podcasts? Where did it go?

I am having problems with the newest version of iTunes (11.1.2). Before, when I wanted to relegate a video podcast to the corner of my screen where it was viewable but didn't take up all of my screen space, I would click on the small rectangular miniplayer icon and get that - a small version of the video playing in the upper left hand corner of my screen.
Now if I double-click on a video podcast to launch it  it takes up much of the screen. Clicking on the miniplayer in that window goes to the grey rectangular miniplayer used for music, and in fact starts playing either a radio station (where did that come from?) or some other music. Not even the sound from the video podcast. Reverting back to the square shaped miniplayer with the program icon doesn't change that. There doesn't seem to be a way of playing a video podcast in a small window. The right button on top switches between full screen view and most-of-the-screen view. In older versions of iTunes that used to evoke the miniplayer, and video podcasts would shrink to a small view in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Is there any way to solve this problem? I often want to watch video podcasts while also doing something else and the current screen-hogging doesn’t let me do that.
MacBook Pro 13" late 2009 running OSX 10.6.8. iTunes 11.1.2

Well, upgrading to ITunes 11.1.3 didn't solve the problem. It helped, in the sense that now I can get the square mini player and a still image of the video podcast, and the sound from the podcast works, but the image doesn't move.
I tried trashing the iTunes Preferences, hoping perhaps one was corrupt, but that didn't solve the problem either. I am now wondering if this is an OS glitch. While iTunes runs on OSX 10.6.8 (SL), which is what I use, it has problems, which perhaps don't appear in more recent OSs.
Can anyone confirm that on a machine running OSX 10.6.8 he/she has iTunes 11.1.3 with the mini player successfully running video podcasts?
    thanks

    thanks.

I have the same problem, and still unable to reolve it.
I use windows XP Pro and installed the miniwas on c drive.
I have configured Microsoft loopback adapter with IP address 10.10.10.10, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 10.10.10.1 and also defined in .../hosts file.
The problem seems that saplicense -test can not pickup the default.pfl in c:\miniwas, thus saplicense -test failed. Please advice and many thanks.
