Mini (Late 2009 - server) won't sleep!

All -
I have recently set up a Mini (Late 2009 - server version) as a small home server. Much of the time I'd like it to be asleep (in the middle of the night, during the day when no-one's at home). The problem is, it won't sleep. It doesn't seem to detect when it's idle and once it's awake - it stays that way. I can make it sleep via the Apple menu - but that's the only way.
My setup:
1 x Mac Mini SL Server (2 x 500GB Drives) connected via Ethernet cable (Airport and Bluetooth switched off) with 10.6.2; no mouse, no keyboard, no display
1 x Drobo connected to Mini via FW800
1 x Airport Extreme 802.11n (but only in bridge mode)
1 x broadband router providing DNS, DHCP etc.
Settings:
- Wake for Network Access set to On
My troubleshooting so far:
1. I've changed the default settings of "Computer Sleep" in the Energy Savings preference pane to 30 minutes rather than the default "Never"
2. I've tried resetting the SMC as detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543 but it still behaves in the same way
3. When I manually sleep the Mini using the Sleep menu option in the Apple menu, the Mini sleeps and the wakes after about two hours with the following entries in /var/log/kernel.log:
Nov 13 12:12:51 server kernel[0]: System Sleep
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: Wake reason = RTC
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: RTC: maintenance alarm 2009/11/13 14:00:48, sleep 2009/11/13 12:12:52
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: System Wake
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: NVEthernet::setLinkStatus - Valid but not Active
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: Ethernet [nvenet]: Link up on en0, 1-Gigabit, Full-duplex, Symmetric flow-control, Debug [796d,0000,0de1,000d,cde1,3c00]
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: NVEthernet::setLinkStatus - link Valid and Active
Nov 13 14:00:51 server kernel[0]: R-state changed 2->0
My guess (and having surfed for answers) is that every two hours or so, the Mini wakes up and reminds everything on the LAN of the services that it's providing and then should go back to sleep. This would be fine if it did actually go to sleep ...
4. I've disconnected the Drobo so all that's plugged into the Mini is the power and Ethernet cable and it still shows the same problem ...
Anyone with any ideas or next steps?
Thanks, everyone - J.

Sleep has always been a problem. The current posts show this fact, this one “won’t sleep” and just above “won’t awake”
My energy setup for any systems or OS versions is always
computer sleep <<<<< Never
display sleep <<<< # of min
√ Put HD to sleep when possible
√ Wake for Network access
And I leave them running 24/7 unless away for 2+ days. I really doubt that my electric bill is any different. I also do not hear any sounds coming from other units not in use on the Network, so feel the settings are the same as sleep, without the problems.

  • After Mountain Lion installed, 27" late 2009 iMac won't sleep

    As the title says.....
Worked fine since new, but with Mountain Lion, it won't auto sleep. I have a numbe of iProducts, but only this one isn't working. Energy saver settings are fine.
Desired behavior is after a few minutes the screen goes dark, then spool down after 15min, but it never happens. It will sleep if I hit the power button.

  • Mac Mini (late 2009) won't connect to wireless internet

The strangest thing happened to me just recently, a conflicting IP address appeared on my Mac Mini (late 2009) a few days ago. This IP was from one of my other computers. After this other computer had been shut down ever since, I keep on getting theses window messages saying "There is a conflicting IP tommiller". I decided to restart my Mac mini only a few hours ago. I returned and the message stopped appearing, but now I can't connect to my wireless Internet. An exclamation mark appears over the airport icon in the menu bar. I took forth all the steps to restart my wireless router, but nothing worked. The wireless works fine on all my devices except the Mac mini. What really freaked me out is that I have a portable Verzion MIFI, and my Mac Mini can't even connect to that. I'm very knowledgeable with Macs, but I've never had this happen to me before. My worst nightmare would be that the wireless card is shot. If anyone has the answer to end my stressful night, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Tom Miller

Log onto your router and see what IP address are being used.
Then try setting a fixed IP address well away from any of those, using Network settings in system preferences. See if that solves the problem.

  • I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.  I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion.

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

  • How can i share folders at Mac mini late 2009 with Apple Tv 3?

I'm using Mac mini 2009 and I can't share any folder with Apple tv 3...anyone managed to get a way to do so, so far?

I have a WLAN at home conneting Mac mini (late 2009), PS3 slim and xbox 360 in the living room and I would love to share whats on the Mac mini with AT3 in the guest room upstairs, physically it wont be possible to control both screens at the same times. The files I have are on external HD connected via firewire + USB to Mac mini and they are a mix of avi, mp4, mpeg etc. I'm talking about 3 TB of movies and series (its still legal here in Dubai to download ;-)). starting to convert such amount of files its not an option. AirParrot is a good option when I have media stored on my MacBook pro and would like to play it no AT3 but I used Beamer it works great for such function.
    any ideas folks ?

  • Airport Extreme not working after downloading 10.8.3 on Mac Mini Late 2009

I downloaded latest upgrade OS X 10.8.3.  This is onto a Mac Mini (late 2009).  The Mini is hooked up to Cable Ethernet.  I use the Mini's Airport Extreme to use as a Hub for other Apple devices to get onto the internet.  I was enabling this through internet sharing through the sharing tab on system preferences.  it has worked for years.  I have restarted and tried several times.  I do not know what to do .  The names of the computers have not changed.  I am a user not a whiz bang programmer type, it is very frustrating.

    Hi, might try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Try setting up Internet Sharing in the new location.

  • How do I remove a disk from my mac mini (late 2009)?

I am trying to regain my mac mini (late 2009) which came with OS X Snow Leopard.  WHY?   Because, after spending quite a few bucks, I have tried and failed to find a suitable substitute for APPLEWORKS.  (I still have the disk)
I erased the Mac Mini's memory, so it is blank READY FOR me to install Snow Leopard. I still have 10.6.3 install disks.
    HA HA.   That's a laugh.
    1) After I put it in the MM,& started it up using my 10.6.3 install disk. The install app told me I couldn't install this system on this computer.  WHY WHY?
    2) Now I have a 10.6.3 disk stuck in the MM and I don't know how to get it out.
    Anybody PLEASE PLEASE !!
(Normally I use a MM (mid 2011) but I want this other MM available to me.)

Dear Allan,  Very interesting solutions to a stuck disk.  I'm going to keep it for future.
I finally did get my disk out - because I started up using my Mtn.Lion BU (it's a Firewire) which I connected to my old MM late 2009.  There she was & I ejected it.
And I did finally get my MM  2009 working again with Snow Leopard - with the great help from ds store.
So now I have my Appleworks back too.   YAH!

  • HT3986 Mac mini later 2009-- can i install windows 7 -64 bit on it?

    hi there,
can i install dual system on mac mini later 2009?
    windows 7 32bit or 64 bit?
    thanks

Although I have the "Early" 2009 mini, I believe they're close enough.
I have a dual system installed. Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8GB of RAM.
You should be aware though that Apple does not officially support the 64 bit version of Windows 7 on this machine, although it seems to be working for the most part using Boot Camp 4.0 drivers.
My only complaint is about the nForce Ethernet Driver. There seems to be some problem with it. Whenever the nVidia Control Panel for video is launched, there is an error reported:
The ethernet itself appears to be working fine using some driver dated back to 2010. While I can go to nVidia's website and locate an updated driver for the GeForce 9400 GPU, I cannot seem to find one for the nForce Ethernet. Honestly, I am not even interested in the Network Control panel, but I get another error when I try to uninstall it.
Would be nice is this could be fixed. Windows 7 32 bit didn't have this issue but I want to run the 64 bit version so I can see all of my RAM.

  • Mac Mini (Late 2009) firewire 800 failure

    Good morning,
I have a Mac Mini (late 2009), with an external Lacie hardrive 1TB connected via firewire 800.  Woke up one morning to see that my hard drive had dismounted. So  I restarted my mac and external hardrive to see that it no longer appeared on my desktop, in finder nor in system profiler.
So I decided to connect the hard drive via FW800 on my mac laptop, it appeared as it should. I also managed to connect the External hardrive via USB on my Mac Mini which worked.
My question is this: Is there something i can do to reset my mac in hopes that the FW800 functions? Or do I need to schedule a repair?
    Many thanks,
    SPJ

You could do the standard troubleshooting steps.
Zap the PRAM by holding down Command-Shift-P-R
    Reset the SMC see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Disconnect all cables (literally all) and then reconnect with as few as needed for an initial test, i.e. just power, keyboard/mouse, screen and of course the hard disk
In Apple System Profiler have a look at the FireWire entry and see what is listed, hopefully the interface itself is listed
Consider using USB instead of FireWire, this will save you the cost of a repair but will be slightly slower
Consider selling the Mac mini with this known fault and then buying yourself a new or refurbished one, the difference might not cost that much more than a new logic board and labour which is the part involved here

  • Mac Mini Late 2009 - Lost monitor mirror after Mountain Lion Update

I have a mac mini late 2009, mirror to dual monitors was working fine prior to Mountain Lion update. After update I have lost that function. The icon top right is gone. Basic functions like that should never disappear. Please fix on upcoming os builds.
    System preferences Mirror options checked.
I have been running dual monitor on this mac since purchase. Monitor 1 is 24" display, Montor 2 is a 32" 720dpi tv only used for watching videos. This set up has been running well.
The dual monitor function works fine but I never use it that way. I am interested in "mirror" option when watching a video from various applications.
Again this was working fine until ML update.
Any one else experience this issue?

Oh. You are so in jail.
Plug the mini straight into the wall power supply.
You do have 4 - 8GB memory installed, right?
Disconnect everything but power and the display port to regular monitor connection. Make sure that external monitor is switched to the type of connection: DVI, HDMI, VGA. Wrong setting and your mini could be booted up sneering at you from behind a dark screen.
    Boot mini.
    Any change?

  • Mac Mini late 2009 und Handoff

    Hallo

    Likely not per:
    http://blogs.computerworld.com/wireless-networking/24042/os-x-yosemite-apples-bl uetooth-handoff-trade
Apple hasn't yet confirmed these claims and it is unlikely it will at this stage of development, but a German Apple website claims those Macs that will support Handoff/Continuity include:
    MacBook Air (mid-2011 and above)
    MacBook Pro (mid-2012 and above)
Retina MacBook Pro (mid-2012 and above)
    iMac (late 2012 and above)
    Mac mini (mid-2011 and above)
    Mac Pro (2013 and above)
The iPad 2 lacks Bluetooth 4.0.

  • Late 2009 MBP Refuses to Sleep.

    Hello,
Problem:  My late 2009 Macbook Pro (10.6.8/Snow Leopard) refuses to sleep. It doesn't sleep when I close the lid and when I attempt to put it to sleep manually, the screen goes dark for no more than two seconds then wakes back up. When I close the lid, I observe the white light on the front right that usually oscillates--dims and brightens-- when it is sleeping. Lately, when I close the lid, the light comes on and begins to fade as usual, but as soon as it is dim it quickly comes back on. It is very similar to someone dozing off and forcing their eyes back open quickly, if a visual is needed.
When I put my ear to the bottom of my MBP, it is still running. However, every 20 seconds or so it sounds as though it is attempting to sleep--the fan and other bits slow down-- but starts back up again. The light on the front verifies this, because it dims then relights quickly when this happens. I have not downloaded any applications that prevent my computer from sleeping. I have enabled settings that put my notebook to sleep everyday at the same time, but it never abides.
    Things I've tried:
    -Restart (failed)
    -Power off and restart (failed)
    -Sleep from Apple menu (failed)
    -Sleep from power button (failed)
    -Sleep from lid closing (failed)
-Sleep from login screen in safe mode by closing lid (failed)
-Sleep from login screen in normal mode by closing lid (failed)
    -Resetting SMC (failed)
-Sleep from safe mode after login (failed)
Any help and insight is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

  • How do I restore Mac Mini late 2009 to factory settings. Error occurs.

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini with 2.26 ghz core and 2 GB memory running Lion 10.7.4. I wish to restore my computer to factory settings but when I put in my Snow Leopard disc I continue to get an error message that reads "You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X with this version of Mac OS X. You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1."
I wish to restore my Mac to Snow Leopard and then redownload Lion from the App Store and start fresh with 10.7.4 on my restored Mac but I am finding it incredibly difficult.

You might have to erase the Drive first, but did you try reinstalling Lion from the Restore Partition?
    Hold CMD+r keys at bootup?
    Otherwise...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.

Go to System Preferences->Personal->Security & Privacy and click on the ADVANCED tab in the lower-right corner. (You will probably have to click the AUTHENTICATE lock in the lower-left corner and provide your password first.)
Un-check the "Log out after X minutes of inactivity" box in the Advanced panel or set X to a large value that isn't likely to get in your way often.
