Mini mac and powerbook G$

Hi All,
I want to buy a mac mini and use it as a back up hard drive system. Will I be able to back up files from my power book to the mini mac, using wifi or bluetooth?
also will I be able to connect a mini mac to a TV to use as a monitor?

A Mac mini is probably the most expensive back-up hard drive you could find anywhere. Why not just get a FireWire hard drive?
You can connect your Mac mini to a TV as a display. What kind of TV do you have? What kind of video inputs does it have? If it's a digital TV with a DVI input it should work pretty well. However, if it's an analog TV with s-video or composite video inputs it won't work very well as a computer monitor. For a TV like that, you'll need the Apple DVI to Video Adapter.

I have an existing mini mac and 4 tb external drive.
My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..
what do i need to do ?
I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
    Thanks

I had already tried that one and got this...
below is screen shot of what is on the new mac mini
and what is on the external drive now connected to the new mac mini..
There are no media files on the mac mini just the library files and on external just media files..
Do I need to copy anything over from the old mac mini ? xml files ? .. the itunes folder on old mini is about 840mb in size which looks to have artwork ect ? .. I am fairly computer literate, but this one has me stumped.. ?
    thanks for help

    Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.

The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

  • Adding a mini mac and Apple TV .

I currently only have a iPhone. But would like to make the plunge to full apple.
I would like a mini mac and Apple TV.
I need advise on the best way to integrate them into my system.
    I currently have:
    A pioneer amp.
A ps3 and a Blu-Ray player, these plug into the pioneer amp via hdmi.
The amp is connected to my tv via hdmi.
The tv is a 48" Panasonic 3d plasma.
There are 2 spare hdmi ports in the amp.
Can both products be connected by hdmi?
    Is that the best way?
Can I plug one to the other and save a hdmi port on the amp?
If so, what cables will I need?
Thanks for your advice in advance.
I'm hoping to get myself the gear for Xmas

Not all computers can use the "Mirroring" feature found in Mountain Lion.
You can still mirror using iTunes and use "Airplay".

  • Two Mini Mac and One Monitor

    Hey everyone,
Whats the best one to do? I have two mini mac and one monitor with a WIRELESS (Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse...
    Should I get a KVM or Network,etc?
Or what is the best advice for me to get?
Im using one Mini Mac for work just as Photoshop and Lightroom ONLY,
Other mini mac for play around, download, internet search, etc
both 10.4.11 BUT will get Snow Leopard soon...
    1.66 Ghz Inter Core Duo
    and
cant remember the other Ghz as its shut down at the moment but higher then 1.66Ghz, Inter Core Duo
    Johnny

...with a WIRELESS (Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse...
Do you have a separate keyboard & mouse for the other Mac? Bluetooth keyboards and mice normally can only be paired to one device and since the Bluetooth receiver is built-in to the Macs, you normally can't attach your Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse to a KVM. (If you have a non-Bluetooth wireless keyboard/mouse with it's own dedicated receiver, then it's possible to use that with a USB KVM. But those are mostly PC keyboards/mice so most Mac people don't have such.)
So that basically eliminates KVM as a sharing device for you. Leaving just something like screen sharing to remote control one of the Macs. You probably will not like the way Photoshop and Lightroom work over screen sharing, so remote control just the "internet only" Mac, not the Photoshop Mac.

    Reset PRAM.
    Shut it down completely.
Holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys, press the power button.
Listen for the "startup chime" to sound three times and release the keys.

  • Mini mac and a possible broken charger unit

In a discussion with a mate he asked if I ever had problems with charger units on my mac.
He uses a mini mac in connection to an external harddrive. That external harddrive currently died during runtime.
The mini mac itself was running fine till then - but it keeps shutting itself down after 5 minutes. No chance on reboot to run it again.
Only after removing the charger from the house power socket it is rebootable.
I never had any issues with the apple chargers yet myself. Might be that the step into virtual nirvana of the external harddrive damaged the charger, though I am not aware if the charger have a return line / return duct.
Does anyone here has experience with such kind of trouble shooting?
    Cheers in advace

Several thoughts come to mind, the first of which being that the mini doesn't have a 'charger' - it has an external power brick - thus it can't run unless it is plugged in.
That aside, to troubleshoot this problem it would really be better to have the owner/user of this system post here rather than you, simply because that would give us a first hand description of the problem and allow us to ask questions about the system and its behaviour. Doing it this way can make trying to work out what's going on far more difficult.
For example, what kind of Mac mini is this; how old is it; what is it used for; what software is installed on it; are the shutdowns accompanied by any fan activity; does the system simply shut down or are there any error messages or other dialog boxes on the display; what happens when an attempt is made to reboot it after a shutdown; how much time is needed after shutting down before it starts up again......?
My first reaction to the symptoms as briefly described is that the system is suffering from an overheating problem since the mini is designed to go into protective shutdown if it gets too hot. If that were the case then it would run a lot longer when started from cold than it would when rebooted after running a while. It isn't likely to be a problem with the power supply, since typically these either work or don't, but it isn't possible to rule it out completely until we have more information. The only way that the hard drive's power supply could have an effect is if it failed with a short circuit on the live side, which could be expected to pull down the mini's supply if it were plugged into the same power socket, though it would just as easily blow a house fuse/trip a breaker in that situation.

  • Mini mac and OS 10.3 Server

I was thinking of installing OS 10.3 server to a mini mac. Does anyone know if this is possible and it will run. I dont want to use it as a server, just a place to study the server program.

The original Mac minis will only boot from any version of Mac OS (server or client) that is 10.3.7 or later. So, as long as your Mac OS X Server software is 10.3.7 or later you shouldn't have any trouble. However, it's very likely that your Mac OS X Server install disk is older than 10.3.7. If this is the case, you may have some trouble getting it installed unless you have another Mac that can boot from the disk. Note, there have been reports of new Mac minis that are shipping with new hardware. If you get one of these updated Mac minis, they will ONLY boot from the included disks/Mac OS. You will not be able to put a version of Mac OS X 10.3 Server on these Mac minis. You might be better off buying a used G4 tower than a Mac mini in this case.

  • Mini Mac and games

There's a game I wanted to get if I got a Mac, The Sims 2, and I was wondering if the Mac version will run on a Mini Mac?

    Kafoobawitz,
    From the manufacturer:
    System Requirements:
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later
    CPU Processor: PowerPC G4/G5
    CPU Speed: 1.2GHz or faster
    Memory: 256 MB or higher
Hard Disk Space: 3GB free disk space
Video Card (ATI): Radeon 9000 or better
Video Card (NVidia): GeForce FX5200 or better
Video Memory (VRam): 32 MB or higher
    Media Required: DVD Drive
Since it's available as a Universal Binary, it will run on an Intel mini. I'd have to defer to others with respect to graphics quality.

  • Synchronizing Mail on home Mac and Powerbook (OS 10.4 & 10.3)

I think I used to be able to put my up to date e-mail on my Powerbook when going on a trip and then transfer back it back to my home machine by copying the mail folder in the user library.
However it isn't working now. I get all the current mailboxes but Mail on the powerbook doesn't see any of the mail files from the last several months.
I upgraded my home computer to OS 10.4 several months ago. The PowerBook is still on 10.3.9 Is that the problem? Is the older Mail 1.3.11 unable to read files saved in the current Mail? (I'm on the road now so I don't remember what number the current Mail is.)
If that is the problem I suppose I either need to upgrade the Powerbook or switch to a server based e-mail like Gmail.
What is the recommended solution for keeping e-mail synchronized at home and on the road?
    John
    G5 1800 DP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hello John.
The mbox format used by Tiger Mail is significantly different than the mbox format used by previous Mail.app versions and is not backwards compatible without a workaround.
What is the recommended solution for keeping e-mail synchronized
at home and on the road?
Using an IMAP type account instead of a POP type account which requires nothing special in order to do so.

  • I have a mini mac and my internet always disconnects after I updated to OSX Mountain Lion.  I mostly disconnects when I skype or watch videos online.  How can I fix this problem?

It always disconnects and I brought it in the apple store twice and still does not work.

    Hi 'baltwo'
Thank you for your link, I already had been on this particular website this afternoon. they only discuss problems in the application and nothing about how the MS Office application installation does disturb Mac OS.
Or have I missed a special comment there?
In any case many thanks, trioloGo
