Mini mac reads dvds but ejects cds?????

hi there,
i've gotta problem with my mini mac in that it will read a dvd fine, but when i insert a cd it ejects the disc automatically, can anyone help on this problem.

For anyone who experimented the same problem as I did, try to reset the PMU:
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
Wait 10 seconds.
Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
Let go of the power button.
Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
It works but the fan seems to stay on the high speed... don't know why

  • Will read DVDs but not CDs

I have a satellite a305-s6872 that will read dvds but not cds.  It was reading cds the last time I tried (October) but now it's not.  This means that I can't play or burn cds.  It also means that I can't install any programs that come on a cd.  Please help!

I have the same problem. It reads DVDs, and rejects CDs, even perfect/new CDs.
Apple Support told me there will soon be a software update (in a week?) to fix this problem, but I am not convinced.

  • Drive reading DVDs but not CDs

My disc drive does not read ANY CDs but does read DVDs. I dont feel that it is 'broken' in the normal sense as it still instantly recognizes my DVDs but for CDs it eats it, spins it three times, and spits it back out. is this a problem I can fix with a software update or with an easy fix in some options menu? thanks in advance for any help

That is too funny. I've just blew some air in the optical drive with that http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Giottos-Rocket-Air-Blower-Review.aspx and it is working now! : )

  • Why my brandnew L10-193 reads DVDs but NOT CDs?

Tehnical support of the company I bought the laptop said "this is not possible", but it is a fact. My laptop simlpy does not read CDroms, although it has no problem to read DVDs. I use Windows XP. Is it a technical defect?
by the way, it took me about 30 minutes to register myself in order to be able to attend this forum.. throught the registration-over-registration-line. very burocratic.

    Hi
First of all I dont find that this forum or the login procedure is bureaucratic.
For me it was very simply and short login procedure.
But now something about your drive issue:
Did you test the drive with different CDs? Audio, data, etc
But nevertheless, try to remove the drive from the device manager. After rebooting, the OS should recognize the drive again. If after this procedure the drive will not read the CDs so in my opinion there is a lens calibration problem. I dont know why it is happened but the unit is under warranty. In this case the drive replacement will be done for free.

  • IMac reads DVDs, but not CDs

My computer will mount and open DVDs, no problem, but will not mount CDs, and will eventually eject them. I tried several CDs, including DiskWarrior, and music CDs. They are all ejected, except DW sometimes will just keep going (never getting past the gray Apple logo). I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, I've run DW (on my hard drive) and repaired permissions, I have reset PRAM and NVRAM, and CDs still won't be read. Is this broken hardware that needs to be replaced, or is there something else to try?

Try going to System Preferences +CDs & DVDs+ pane. Try changing one of the settings, such as +When you insert a music CD+ to Ignore. Try inserting a music CD to see if it is accepted and mounted (not eventually ejected). If that works, set it back to whatever it was before and try other types of CDs to see if they are now also accepted.
If that does not help, as a test, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. See if you have the same issue in the new account, or if things work as they should.
If it works fine in the new account, you have narrowed down the cause to something in your normal user account. The hardware and overall system are OK.
If the problem recurs on the new account, the problem is more likely to be caused by some issue with the overall system, or possibly hardware.

  • Superdrive reads Dvds but not cds?

I am a new convert from PCs. 2 days ago I bought a new Imac G5 it plays dvds without a problem but when I put in a blank CD or even a regular CD it takes about 30sec and just spits it out. It doesn't even show up on the desktop? Whats wrong? I update the mac. Some1 Plz help!!!

In the System Preference panels, there is one named CDs & DVDs
and it is possible the computer has been set to Ignore or eject blank
media of this type; since that option exists in this control panel.
System Preferences should be available in the menu beneath the
Blue Apple, and also in the Dock.
    {PS: Where did you get a 'new iMac G5' in these days of Intel® iMacs?}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • DR8-A will read DVDs but not CDs

After a few months of use my MSI DR8-A has just stopped reading cds in both windows and dos. I hadn't installed or removed anything and I have flashed the drive to the most recent version. I'm assuming the cd laser is either dirty or knackered, but if anyone has any ideas...

Replacment drive has the same issues, I did upgrade the Firmware to 1.5 and it seems better.  I will give it some time to test, first reaction is not favorable...

I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. According to the System profiler the CD/DVD drive is a "PioneerDVD-RWDVR-112D." When I compare the information under this heading, the only unusual difference from my iMac is that the G5 reads "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)." My iMac reads "Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)."
Under the System Preferences the options are set to "Ask what to do" when a blank CD or DVD is inserted. Music CD set to open iTunes, Picture CD set to open iPhoto, Video DVD set to open DVD player.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks, Jack

  • HELP! MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, and...

    Hi all
I noticed that there many of you have the same problem, but I really need some advice here, my MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, well actually occasionally it does recognise the DVDs then it burn but cannot write (on Toast), also in many other apps, like iDVD or DVDSP, it does run well on the first part of the burning but then failed at the end, with all kinda diff error msg. I have tried using many diff brands of disc too, inc verbatim.
So I borrowed my friends external DVD writer (actually a cheapy one with no brand), when I tried to burn using the external then an error msg comes up and says the writer cannot recognise the disc.
I dont wana get the MBP to repair but just wana get a external DVD writer to solve the problem, cos i need to use my computer and dont have a replacement mac, but now I am worry if the problem i now having is a system problem or just hardware, not sure if it is because the DVD writer i borrow is cheapy so it doesnt cope with mac, or just my MBP have system error that cant burn DVDs...
But my MBP can burn CDs so it is not a hardware problem? and if that is a system problem so even I buy a new DVD writer wont solve the problem?
btw, I have tried many solving methods like rewriting permission, reset PVRAM, etc
    PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS HELP

I'm having the same problem you are on my 2.4GHZ Core2Duo MBP running 10.5.2. It will sometimes recognize DVDs, sometimes not... it chuggs and clunks and then spits the disc out. If i re-insert it a view times it will show up on the desktop. I get failures from Toast as well as iDVD. If i keep trying i have been able to burn files onto a disc with the finder, but then the burner fails during the verification. If put the disc back in the contents appear to be correct (after a quick look). Burning CD-Rs seems to be working fine, that with the occasional DVD write seems to point away from the HW. I am trying with both Memorex DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD-Rs...
I have tried the command/option-PR reset combo with no luck.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,

PS the specific error i got from iDVD was: The error #-2147352539 was reported…

My DVD drive not reading DVDs, but can read some DVDs with data on it. Device manager shows no errors.
    I tried to reinstall driver.
    I downloaded new codec
    I tried Microsoft FIX IT
     Nothing worked.
    Need some help.
    Thank you!!

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • IMac will play DVDs but not CDs

My 2009 iMac will play DVDs but not CDs (bought music CDs and burnt CDs). The last time I tried (successfully) was December 2013. Can anyone help?

Start a new topic and don't hijack this one.  You're problem is different from the OPs. When you start the new topic give your system version, iMac year and model and what type of CDs you can't read, i.e. commercial or those you created yourself.  Also if you can read DVDs.

  • Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • HP Pavilion DV7 2206TX - DVD drive reads DVDs but not CD's

My HP Pavilion DV7 2206TX - DVD drive reads DVDs but not CD's.
When I insert a CD, the drive tries very hard to read the CD but gives up after about a minute.
I get no error message.  I do not see the Auto play message.
Windows Explorer does not recognize the DVD drive.
When I insert a DVD, I get the Autoplay menu, Windows Explorer recognize the drive and the DVD. I can play the DVD using any number of Video players.
I would welcome advice relating this problem.

your HP Pavilion needs a new DVD driver. I ran into many problems such as this when troubleshooting computers in school.
A DVD drive should play CD at any time:  While a CD driver will not play a DVD disc. Do not think there is a problem with sofware because it will only throw your troubleshooting skills  out the window and it will confuse you.
