Mini; Moving iTunes and iPhoto library to ext hd

I've got a 1.66Ghz Intel core duo with 120Gb hard drive and 1Gb of RAM. About 40Gb available on the drive. I'm thinking about getting an OWC mini stack ext hd to do something with the FW 400 port. Moving the iPhoto and iTunes libraries make the most sense but will I see an unacceptable performance drop off using the apps? Music is about 20Gb. Photos are 8Gb and growing. I don't see any new apps in my future but perhaps an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard if it can run ok in 1 Gb.
Or do I have enough room on the SATA drive just to use the ext for backups? I tend to get worried when the tank gets below 1/3rd full.
All opinions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The 400 Mbits/second data throughput of FW400 is plenty sufficient for music, photos and even video, though some content might falter slightly if there's other data being moved at the same time. As such an external is the perfect choice to deal with large or growing libraries of data.
In your case, you're likely to notice an improvement if you upgrade to 2Gb RAM also - your 1.66 mini would typically run a little more smoothly and quickly with the extra memory, particularly if you run multiple apps.

  • Common itunes and iphoto library across many apple devices & users using AExtreme?

Is it possible to maintain a common itunes library and iphoto library shared across multiple users and multiple devices in a home via airport extreme or via airport express and a NAS?

i realized that an itunes library folder is different from an itunes media folder although the later resides in the former. turns out while each user account with apple should have its own library they can point to the same media folder.
right now i have my dad and my itunes library on my mac point to the same media folder inside /Users/Shared and that way we are able to access the same music and movies for our iphones and ipads.
i guess now all we need to do is move this to a network drive and make itunes point there.

  • Share one iTunes and iPhoto library between 2 computers

I have a network with an iMac and a G5 and I'd like to use a ethernet hard drive to store a common iTunes music and iPhoto library so either computer uses the same files and isn't depending upon the other computer being turned on (so I think this rules out a firewire or USB external drive). Any suggestions. Both computers would need read/write access to the ethernet hard drive. Thanks.

If you turn on iTunes sharing in the network settings and then point each copy of iTunes to that ethernet HD, it should be fine.

  • Time Machine Backup Potential Warning - Omits itunes and iphoto library

I recently had to restore from time machine, only to discover that in over one month of backups (since upgrading to Leopard and replacing carbon cloner w/ TM) it in fact never backed up my itunes and iphoto libraries. No warnings, no prompts, no messages to the effect that the backup wasn't backing up ALL of my files. Both these folders resided as subfolders in a media folder, not in their default locations (no warning about that being a problem either...). Now I am trying data recovery, but looks like I will be out 4000+ songs and thousands of irreplaceable photos -- the reason I was backing up in the first place.
Trying to remain composed, I wanted to put this out there as a warning in case other folks are relying on TM and end up in the same position, and also to invite suggestions for possible recovery fixes (in addition to using prosoft data recover 2)
    thanks

well this post made me go double check my TM. I was able to see both my iPhoto DB and all my iTunes songs. My iTunes are on an EHD, but I was able to check albums as I added them. I just happened to remember when I added a new song and was able to look at the day before this and it wasn't there, then the day after and it was. Also on my iPhoto I was able to see it grow in size from Dec 30th until today in TM.
I know this didn't help, but maybe it will make folks check it out to see that TM is or is not working. At some point I hope to get around to cloning my HD, as you can never have too many backups.

  • Moving iTunes and music library from one computer to another

I need to move my iTunes and music library with purchased music, playlists, ratings, and legally downloaded music to another computer. How do I do that?

Try posting in the iTunes for Windows area. You'll be more likely to get a quick and accurate answer there than you will here in the iTunes for Macintosh forum. Good luck.

  • Moving Events and iPhoto library to a new Mac

I just picked up a new Mini for my HTPC. I would like to move the Events and photos that I already have on my other Macs to the new one. I exported all of the photos to a flash drive and then imported them in on the new Mini, but of course it just imported the photos. It did not organize them at all.
Bottom line, is there any way to move my existing library over to a new Mac without having to re-label all events and stuff like that?
    Thanks guys,
    Steve

I lost my iphoto Library when I was moving all my files over to my Mac Mini. I had a clean mini with Leopard and had my photo library on my external only. I was messing around with the Time machine and i think it did a back up which I stopped right away, but I think it deleted the iPhoto library and my iTunes library.(the mini probably had an empty iPhoto library) So now I used Data rescue to try and find it and all of the files from that external are on my mini's desktop with just numbered jpeg files & mp3 files. One folder says recovered music & recovered pictures. Of course there is nothing that says iphoto library and all the files are so mixed up.I have been going thru all the photos and just dragging them in, but it is getting so tedious....Help! Oh, and the photos are very pixelaed now....would that be because they are just jpeg files....I am not sure if they were prior to this whole problem. I have a feeling there is no way around this. Thanks in advance. Robin

  • Copy iTunes and iPhoto library to new air mac

I've just bought a new air mac. I have my entire music and photo library on my imac - which is running snow leopard. I back the imac up to a 1tb time machine.
I tried to use migration assistant over wireless to migrate info to my air mac but this failed - as expected over wireless.
I ideally want to copy over itunes, iphoto , files and folders and my windows for mac to the air mac and retain them on my imac.
Is there an easy way to copy my information to my new air mac ?
There seems to be lots of hacks and options but I'm not usre which is the best way ?

    Perhaps this will help: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748.
Your iPhoto library is located in the /Home/Pictures/ folder. If you've already migrated the home folder then everything has been moved including the iTunes library which is in the /Home/Music/ folder.

  • New iMac or new Mac Mini... and iPhoto Library separate drive?

I have a 2007 iMac Intel Core Duo 2.4Ghz (4 meg RAM) with a hard drive in need of repair, according to Disk Utility (and repeated by DriveGenius 3.)  The Repair option is not available.  I have had occasional difficulty with this particular Mac, and this is actually my second hard drive, and it is out of warranty.  I had already planned to replace this computer later this year.
In attempting to download and install Lion OS, the install failed, and the computer became essentially inoperable.  I was able to use Time Machine to get it back running, but cannot repair what is surely a damaged HD.  Apple Support came to the same conclusion.
I have become interested in a few goals:  (1) To purchase a Mac Mini along with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor (when available) in order to separate my CPU from my monitor.  (2) I want to separate my media files from a CPU hard drive for safety, for the very problem I am experiencing now.  (3) I want to make my iPhoto library and iMovie library available to my wife – perhaps on an external dedicated drive - for her newer iMac, to various iPhones and iPads, and to two Apple TV units.
We have a home network with an Airport Extreme, and several Ethernet outlets.  Both iMac’s currently use Western Digital external drives for Time Machine backups.  I have another external Seagate drove solely for my iMovie files.  I just purchased a Time Capsule 2TB (but have not yet opened) with the idea that this would be where the “shared” iPhoto library resides.
    My questions –
Would you recommend using a Mac Mini + monitor, or go with a new iMac (my current iMac is my third and the only one that has given me some problems.)  I do not have any specialized use of my computer beyond the common iLife applications.
I want my photos and videos to be easily available to my family on their Apple devices (I’m the only one with the significant family photo library) and I haven’t quite devised a plan to accomplish that.  Can you make suggestions?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Currently the Library is on EHD 1 and you want to copy it to EHD2?
Connect them both to the iMac. Make sure EHD2 formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  and drag the iPhoto Library from EHD 1 to EHD 2
To open either Library with iPhoto 11: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
It will update the Library to the new formats. Remember once you do this the older versions of iPhoto will no longer be able to read it.

  • Transfer itunes  and iphoto library from my imac to a macbook

    Hi
Hope I am on the right forum and to let you know I am not that bril' with computers but I have been using Macs since the 11Ci was the top of the range but here goes.
I use a G5 mac and I also use a macbook. Unfortunately something happened to the macbooks hard drive and it had to be replaced with a new one, which was covered under the Applecare protection plan. However, all the info that was stored on he macbooks hard drive was lost.
Is there anyway that I can attach the Macbook to the iMac and transfer transfer the information from one to another or do I have to have to start importing all the CD's again and also the photo which are also stored on disk.
I know that they are both wireless and should be able to talk to each other but the password for connecting the macbook to airport extreme system does not work and I need to talk to the telephone company on Monday for a new password as the password they previously supplied does not work.
Hope, that I have explained my problem and look forward for some help.
    Thanks
    James

It's a little unclear where your music and photo files were/are. If they were only on your MacBook disk then they're lost. If they were on both your computers then you can copy them from the iMac to the MacBook. The easiest way to do this is by booting the MacBook (for all but the latest model) into "target disk mode" by holding down the "t" key while booting. Then connect the two computers with a FireWire cable. The MacBook disk should mount on the iMac, which will allow you to copy files between them.
The phone company won't be able to help you with the password your computers use to connect to your AirPort Extreme. The only thing they can help you with is the password that the AirPort Extreme uses to connect to their network. You should be able to recover the AirPort Extreme password from the iMac with Keychain Utility and then use that password to connect your MacBook to the AirPort Extreme.

  • How to sync iPhone with MBP connected via ethernet to PowerBook where iTunes and iPhoto content resides

I just got the iPhone 5, but I am still using a PowerBook G4 machine that will not sync with my new iPhone.  I was wondering if I could
    1) create a new user for myself on my brother's MBP
    2) connect that MBP with my PowerBook via ethernet
    3) have iTunes and iPhoto on my new MBP user to be mapped to my PowerBook iTunes and iPhoto Library folders respectively
    4) sync the iPhone with my new user on my brother's MBP and acquire all of the content from the iTunes and iPhoto libraries that reside on my PowerBook
Will this work?  Does anyone recommend a different solution to get the content from my PowerBook G4 1.33 to my new iPhone 5

Now I have made a search and you are right. A problem which seemed unique to me is, in fact, very common. It is unbelievable that on one hand the Apple programmers can create great software, but on the other hand they act like retards when they forget about some basic functionality. I really can't believe that I will lose my purchases simply because at Apple nobody thought that people do install a fresh system from time to time. What a shame.
But what about consolidation of accounts? I am being asked to provide account ID which I don't even remember anymore. It seemed natural for me that I download some applications and simply go on with life, just as in about any other website on the internet. But suddenly Apple says that I will not be able to save or transfer my application because I need some funky ID. Hello Apple... My application is already on my phone so I should be able to copy it where I want without some ID. That's really odd.
Anyway, I will try to search the forum and solve my problems. I simply didn't even think in my wildest dreams that Apple software could be sometimes so ********.

  • I moved my entire iPhoto Library to an external hard drive, which seems to have worked. But now my Mac Pro shows a backup of the same size in the storage info and has not freed up any space. help!

I moved my entire Iphoto Library from my Macbook Pro to an external hard drive. (Prior to this, I also copied the entire library to a different ehd, plus I have 2 other ehdrives with backups). I was trying to get more space on my hd. It has a capacity of 500GB, but was down to 70GB usable, with about 300GB used up by photos. I moved the library by going to Finder, using Command+Drag+Drop onto the new Seagate ext hard drive icon. The move seems to have worked, as the library shows up on the ehd, plus will open from there. My problem is that now my Macbook Pro shows that I STILL have only 70GB available out of the 500, and that 300GB is used up by "Backups", which it did not indicate before.
I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
Thanks for any and all help!

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Need help restoring iTunes Library and iPhoto Library after re-install???

some history, my 5 1/2 year old iMac started as Tiger, upgrade to Leopard and then to Snow Leopard...the latter being done after Snow Leopard came to market. Over a week ago I developed a Disk error that could not be fixed by the repair disk and everything else that Apple could come up with. The iMac at this point was pretty unresponsive. (It had been running great for years) Anyhow the decision was made to do a complete restore. Time Machine had made a backup just the previous day or two earlier plus I have close to 2 years of other SL backups. So per Apple, we did a full install of Leopard followed by a upgrade to Snow Leopard, followed by installing all the updates. We then reinstalled iWorks (with iTunes and iPhoto) and installed those updates as well. So now I had an empty itunes and iPhoto.....Now it gets confing for me! It was late at night and the Apple folks were shutting down. They simply said, Go to your last Time Machine back up date and hit restore and you will be all set. Well...what ever it restored, I can't find my music or photos. I called the next night, again it was late and we only had a short time but this person had me do a system Migration...to restore everything back to the way it was before......So now I have 100 gigs of everything I recognize from my applications to all the stuff in my User file and it would appear everthing else. The problem is....I can't find my old iPhoto library or my itunes library anywhere and I am scared to death that I have lost them despite all my Time Machine Back-ups. Worried and concerned!!! Bill

If you need to, you should be able to selective restore things from later backups, via the "Star Wars" display. See #15 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum)., if you're not sure how to do that.
I am going to watch like a hawk and if it does occur then I know I probably have some HD issues.
Good plan. You might want to run this: [Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509]. Run the Extended tests.
I also think I may do something like a Carbonite back-up in addition to my external HD.
That will be excruciatingly slow. See #27 in the FAQ for some other suggestions.

  • Browsing other folders and ext. HDD rather than iTunes and iPhoto - iMovie 09

    Hi all,
Just wondering if there was any way you can browse other folders within your local hard drive or external hard drive rather than using the default iTunes and iPhoto directories?
I have audio and images located in other parts of my hard drive, including an external hard drive.
It would be great to be able to broswe through all my other folders and directories.
    Cheers

iMovie is part of a suite of apps - iLIfe, so it prefers its 'neighbors'.
to add files from other locations, simply use MacOS' drag-'n-drop functionality: open a Finder Window, go to the file's location, grab it with the mouse and drop it into your Project Timeline.
This procedure does NOT guarantee iM accepts 'any' files!

  • Can I have the same iTunes and iPhoto on different users?

I have 2 user accounts on my Laptop. Mine is the main one with all the music on iTunes and the photos on iPhoto. I was wondering if there is anyway, I can add these photos and music to the other user on my laptop.
It is a macbook running on - Version 10.8.2 and a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Many thanks for any help.
    Ollivia

    Yes-
To do this you need to get an external Hard-drive with enough storage space to hold your entire iTunes/iPhoto library. Then go to Finder and open your home folder, then locate music and find the iTunes folder.
From here copy the folder onto you external drive. Then, locate the itunes folder in the other user, and replace the iTunes folder on your external drive with the folder in the music folder. Do the same with the iPhoto library. Then, you should have the same iTunes library and iPhoto library on both. You could then delete the itunes folder off of the external drive and use it for time-machine if you wanted.
    Hope this helps.
