Mini overheating

Hello,
Just trying to canvas opinion. I've discussed this with Apple Support, and have had no real help. Very unlike Apple, but I'm very disappointed.
Ever since I've had my mini (6 months or so) the fan has been running loudly and noisily almost constantly when it was on. Using it as a DVD player in my lounge was near impossible as you couldn't realistically watch the film because of the noise.
I put this down to the small size of the mini, and so having to force air through it to keep it cool.
That was until the mini wouldn't run for any longer than 10 minutes: shutting down through (suspected) overheating due to fan failure.
Then I took a look at the base of the mini, and noticed several "hot spot" scorch marks.
Not very happy with this, I contacted Apple care. They were indifferent about it, said I should take it to an authorized repairer to look at, which I did.
They said they could check it in to look at it, but that they hadn't seen the scorch marks before and so recommended that if I wasn't totally happy to go back to Apple Care.
Which I did, 1st guy very helpful, thought scorch marks were bad, put it down as a safety concern, passed me onto "senior technician" - who was indifferent again, said I should take it back to the authorized repairer to look again.
My point is that I dont think a) the fan should have been running as it was from the start, that b) there is some underlying problem c) scorch marks are worrying - what other damage is there internally.
All in all, my feeling is that the mac has been sold unfit for purpose.
But I'd like others opinions. Does your mini have burn marks on its base too? Perhaps this is a normal thing, and I shouldn't be so worried about it?
I'll take it back to the repair shop. Fed up now though, haven't been able to use the mac for about a month due to faffing around with this and not always having the opportunity to get to the repair shop!

The first thing to say is that your experience with this system is not at all common. Most minis, both the original G4 and the present Intel models, run sufficiently quietly that to all intents and purposes in anything other than a very quiet room, they are silent. What this would clearly indicate is that yours is not a typical system, and indeed, being highly untypical, it is not hard to extrapolate the conclusion that it is faulty, regardless of the ambivalence exhibited by Apple staff with whom you have spoken.
The Apple service provider should have taken the system from you and offered to repair it rather than give you the runaround and expect that you should continue to pursue the matter on the phone. However, since they did not, I think the time has come that you should take the rights bestowed on you by the various consumer protection laws in the UK and contact the seller from whom you purchased the system and state that they are responsible for resolving the matter to your satisfaction - the seller in UK law is the party responsible for addressing the issue.
Given that other minis run quietly and do not shut down as a consequence of overheating, it is not a matter of generic design but of a defect in your system, which may be a simple one to resolve if an approved service provider opens the system up, or which may warrant a replacement system. If you gain no immediate and satisfactory traction in dealing with the seller, contact your local trading standards office and ask them to assist you. They are the people tasked with enforcing consumer rights under the Sales of Goods Act.

Still under warranty my Ipad mini was on charger durning the night.  In the morning it was very hot and would not start again.  I took it in to Apple store they replaced it gave me 3 months more warranty and 4 months later the EXACT same thing happened to the new mini.  Now they say there is "NOTHING" they can do about it?  This is clearly a design or manufacturing flaw.  Apple needs to recall this product.  I am now going direct to Apple to see what they propose to do.  A full refund or a normal Ipad.  I will only take a new mini if they can show they have fixed this flaw! Anybody else interested in pursuing this with Apple?

  • IPad Mini Overheating

    Has anyone else experienced this? I plugged in my new iPad Mini with the supplied charger, overnight. When I disconnected it the next morning, the iPad was almost too hot to touch! It then would not turn on, even after cooling down. I took it back to my AT&T store where I purchased it a week ago, and they were kind enough to replace it.

  • Mac Mini Overheating Problem

    Hello everyone!
    I have a Mac Mini that I bought in October 2009 and it's suffering from overheating. I am using Temperature Monitor to see the temperatures reached by different components. For example, the temperatures that the Mac reaches under normal load (browser, messaging and mail) are:
    CPU A heatsink: 51 C
    CPU A Temperature Diode: 53 C
    CPU Core 1: 38 - 40 C
    CPU Core 2: 38 - 40 C
    HDD Bay 1: 45 C
    Northbridge Position One: 54 C
    Smart HDD Hitachi (Fujitsu at work): 48 - 56 C
    Wireless module: 54 - 60 C
    Now my biggest concern is the temperature of the HDD which is way too big (even when using the Mac on normal load doing nothing fancy)!!! I've tested today the Mac Mini that I have at work and it's the same story. Running the HDD at this temperature will cause it to fail very quickly. I've tested the temperature that the HDD from my laptop gets and it is 38 - 40 C.
    What to do about this? What temperature readings do you guys get? How to cool down the HDD?

    You shouldn't worry about these temps.
    Keeping the CPU cool isn't necessary. If the CPU is operated within the temperature spec it will generally last longer than other parts in the system. If you manually increase the fan speed to keep the CPU cooler then the the fan will probably fail first. Do you hear a lot about Apple computers with dead CPUs? I don't. We generally discard systems before the CPU fails.
    As for the disk, it seems to be a myth that operating modern disks at higher temperatures is bad for them. A case study done at Google, and they have a LOT of disks, says that high temps are not a problem:

    A friend in the disk drive industry says that manufacturers agree.
    But, if it makes you feel better to keep your stuff cooler -- then by all means do it.
    Keeping it cool won't hurt it.
    So what are the temperature limits?
    First if you are using smcFanControl, the temp it reports is not good for deciding if you are in trouble. It reports an on-CPU diode which is always a LOT higher than the actual CPU core temp. At the moment my Mini is cranking and the diode temp is 15 C. higher than the core temp.

    The CPU in my early-2009 Mini, a P7350, has a Tcase spec of 90 degrees C. That is the maximum operating temperature of the CPU case at the geometric center. The core temp limit will generally be a fair bit higher than that, I hear at least 5 C, but I can't find that a core temp (which is probably Tjunction Max) in the Intel specs. The default fan control algorithm for my Mini seems to try to keep the CPU core temperatures at or below 80 C. It doesn't speed the fan up from the default 1500 RPM until the temp gets nearly that high.
    The late-2009 2.53 GHz CPU is supposedly a P8700 which has a Tcase spec of 105.
    The disk in my Mini, a 320 GB WD Caviar Black , has an operating temp range of 0° C to 60° C.

    Hi my Mac Mini is overheating only when I stream video from any website like youtube, amazon instant video, Vimeo, etc. Can anyone help me with this? I installed SMC fan but still it overheats.Thank you.

    Have you looked at the list of processes running on your Mac when you experience this issue ?
    Use the Activity Monitor to see if there is a particular process that might be consuming too much CPU.

  • IPad Mini overheated and won't turn on.

    Hello everyone, I would like to kindly ask if I can replace my ipad mini 32gb wifi +cellular if I bring it tomorrow at the apple store. I am from the Philippines and I also bought my ipad mini here also. I think it is still covered by my 1 year warranty because I bought it March last year (2013).
    This is what happened. I was charging my iPad Mini yesterday and left it for a few hours, after 3 hours I think, I checked it and it was hot and won't turn on anymore. I immediately unplugged the charger and tried to reboot it and also tried connecting it on itunes but it didn't solve my problem. It stayed like that for 7 hours and then cooled down afterwards, until now it's not working.
    So yeah, if it won't turn on because it overheated or  for some other reasons, Can it be replaced? Will there be any payments?

    We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
    Have you tried a soft-reset to see if that gets it to boot up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo will hopefully appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    If not then whether you might need to pay will depend upon what the store says and whether they think that it's covered by the warranty. Does the iPad have signs of damage anywhere on it e.g. dents ? Only the store will be able to tell you whether it's covered or not.

  • Ipad Mini Overheated? 1st Replacement

    I recently just got another ipad mini just 2 days ago this ipad is the replacement for an previous ipad mini I had earlier. The problem is that I was charging my ipad mini last night right before I went to sleep this morning when I woke up my ipad was hot to the touch. What do I do because it's only been two days and this is a replacement.

    You putting a lot of juice into a device that is 80% battery inside. When charging, the iPad will feel warm to the touch. If it's truly HOT, then it may be a problem.

  • Mac Mini Overheating - probably my fault, still need help though.

    Hi all,
    Well first off my Mac Mini is out of warranty, so one day I decided to crack it open and take a look around.
    I removed the heatsink and the dodgy heatsink clips apple uses (2 of which broke while removing them) and was forced to buy some plastic screws to hold the heatsink on.
    Ever since doing this my mini has been experiencing problems with heat.
    Its a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo (1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) 80GB Hard Drive.
    It already has the latest SMC firmware.
    I have tried the SMC reset procedure, while the procedure did work the problems persist.
    First question, what should be the idle temperature of this machine? it is idling at 60* Celsius or 140* Fahrenheit and 1500 RPM fan speed, the problem is even at 70 - 80*C or 167* Fahrenheit (full load) the fan only increases to 2300 RPM which is insufficient to cool the machine, resulting in a kernel panic and possibly triggering the Intel CPU's thermal protection circuit.
    I have checked the CPU numerous times and tried various thermal paste quantities but this problem persists. I have also checked the fan connector which is definitely connected correctly, in fact all connectors are connected correctly I am sure of it and the reason I am sure is all the software is reporting the correct numbers for temps voltages currents etc.
    Does anyone have any idea what i've done wrong apart from ever looking inside this thing in the first place? I really want to save it because it works fine apart from this issue.
    PS. The only way to do any work is to do an SMC reset (during which the fan runs at full speed), while the fan is forced in full speed the thing works great but as soon as its back to normal the fan fails to adjust adequately).

    It sounds like your method of attaching the heatsink is not as good at removing heat from the CPU as Apple's was.
    I'd suggest getting one of the fan control programs and setting the minimum fan speed at 2500 RPM or more.
    Another issue is whether or not you correctly replaced the T-shaped foam air-diverter on top of the hard drive.
    Also be sure the Mini has free access to room temperature air, and is not sitting on or near other heat-producing equipment.

  • G4 PowerPC Mini puts itself to sleep...

    ...when under heavy load.
    It usually happens when I'm multi-tasking (Safari, Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, iPhoto or iTunes simultaneously etc) and the fan is spinning fast. A rough temperature check shows 58 degrees.
    The fan will spin up faster, then the Mini will go into sleep mode and the fan stops spinning. Hitting any key will wake the Mini back up, the fan spins up again and I can resume working... for a few minutes.
    Is the mini overheating? The vents are clear of dust, and I have turned it on it's side as the base gets very hot.
    I have reset the SMC by unplugging/plugging the power cable while switched off, run Onyx tools and have all Apple updates.
    Help!

    This sounds very much like the right symptoms for overheating, and can easily be tested as such by letting the system cool completely while off, and then running it until it shuts down. If that takes longer than it takes to shut down when started from warm, then the system is responding to CPU load and/or lack of ventilation.
    I see you mention the vents are clear, but it's entirely possible there is debris built up inside the unit that is blocking the air flow, or that the CPU heatsink is loose, or the fan itself no operating effectively. It's also not uncommon to find in the G4 minis that the thermal pad between the logic board and the base is deteriorating, effectively reducing the ability of the system to loose heat that way, however, since you mention the base is hot, that seems less likely in this case.
    By the way, the SMC reset which applies to Intel systems not G4 ones, does nothing when applied to a mini such as yours. The correct procedure to reset the power management unit in a G4 mini is:
    -Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    -Wait 10 seconds.
    -Plug in the power cord +while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button+ on the back of the computer.
    -Let go of the power button.
    -Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • Will ICS update fix overheating issues on Xperia Mini?

    Like seemingly thousands of other people my Mini was turned in to a brick because of overheating causeing the back and menu buttons to constantly trigger. In a different country to place of purchase so warranty doesn't work and its been sitting in the drawer doing nothing for a few months.
    Question is, will the same problem persist after the ICS update? Will all those people like myself who were sold a dud be able to take them out of the drawer? I literally have to open the freezer and rub the phone over a bag of peas for it to work. (Nice engineering there Sony)
    There is apparently a fix that involves rooting the phone and running a script to reduce touch screen sensitivity.. but I have neither the time nor technical proficiency to be sure that I wouldn't mess it up. Why Sony hasn't implemented a touchscreen sensitivity slider in the phone options.. I don't know...
    Anyway.. given that it is a whole new operating system, will the issue still be there? Or should us Mini owners just forget it and throw the thing in the bin?

    I had also the same problem. After a couple of months I gave up and bring the phone to the service center. They have fixed it in half hour by doing calibration. I have made a backup of all applications since the procedure erase everything on phone (not sd card). Make sure you sync contact with google or export them to sd card. Now its working fine.  They said that the program update will not fix this.
    As I can see and I read from service paperm they had change the whole screen with front cover , microphone and a usb cap. Who knows why.

  • Mini PCI Card causes Mac Pro to think the CPUs are overheating

    I bought a Mini PCi Card that I am using in an 8x 2.28 machine and when I put it in the system thinks the CPUs are overheating (red lights near RAM risers). When I pull it out there is no problem.  Any way to force MacPro to bypass POST?  Any other ideas?

    What card is it you are trying to use, and what is the make, etc of it? and there are a couple makes of adpaters.
    There are PCI cards that were keyed for 3.3v and 5v and some for both.
    Anyone that dealt with SCSI controllers, with how even the drivers and firmware of the drive and card and OS had to be matched and certified to be compatible.
    Buit all of this is just meaningless chatter.
    I think you are calling a PCIe 1x slot as mini.
    And why would you want to?
    Again, plug in the make/model and other specs and facts, then hit Bing (or Google, but I come to prefer Bing).

  • Mac Mini i7 Overheating and Freezing

    Over the last year I have rarely taken my laptop out the door. I have been able to do most everything on my iPad when mobile. So after a decade of not owning a desktop, I recently bought a used Mac Pro for the office and new Mac Mini for home.  I upgraded the Mac Pro (2009 8-core) RAM to 14 GB, running Snow Leopard and have had no issue. I upgraded the Mac Mini (2010 i7) RAM to 8GB, running Lion Server and have had overheating and freezing issues. I have the most issue when running Star Craft II or using iMovie.  I can run Star Craft II on an old Macbook Pro w/ 4GB RAM running Snow Leopard with no problem!  Is the issue the Mac Mini or that I'm running Lion on the Mac Mini? I'm not opposed to going retro with the OSX if it will fix the problem.  At this point i'm very disappointed... I've owned Macs for a decade and have never had freezing issues.  

    It would would get hot, but never froze while gaming. It would freeze randomly while running just a few apps like ical, safari and contacts or some like combination. I added a solid state drive and a external cooling fan...it runs much better and faster now, but still occasionally freezes for what seems to be no particular reason.

  • Overheating Mac Mini

    I recently bought a used Mac Mini G4, 1.25 gHz. It has been working great. It does often overheat when doing anything demandingly graphical or when burning a CD, however. It's fan becomes exceedingly loud and the computer goes to sleep.
    This is mostly an annoyance; no damage has been done to the Mac Mini, but I am wondering why it is happening. I am currently a college student living in an air-conditioned dorm. The room is not hot, and the Mini has plenty of room to properly ventilate.
    Could the heat sink be loose or slightly off, or is this a problem with a temperature sensor? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    About 8 months ago, my G4 mini (bought new, and not moved about) started to shut down at random, about once a week, both when working and when sleeping; the only cure seemed to be to unplug the power adapter and leave everyting for a good while. This made me wonder if the problem was in the power adapter or one involving overheating in the mini itself. After about 6 weeks of this, it seemed to cure itself, and I thought little more of it. (btw, the label on the power adapter said it was Part Number 611-0398, made in Thailand, but when I checked this on-line, I get a different number for the 85W unit.)
    Last week, when printing, I sent a document to the "wrong" printer, and aborted the print. Within a minute, the whole system shut itself down (with a click-sound from the LCD monitor I think.) Since then, it has been doing it more and more frequently. And the run-time is getting shorter and shorter. It's now unusable.
    Remembering what I had read here during the previous problems, I reset the PRAM, used the vacuum cleaner to clear out all the slots on the back and on the underside of the mini, and reset the PMU. I have been unable to run disc utility or the hardware test as I can't get the mini to run for more than about 30 seconds, so I can't yet get any further info about what's going on.
    Thinking that it may be an over-heating problem, I'm considering putting the mini and the power adapter into the fridge overnight to get them near the lower end of the temperature operating range, and thereby extend the running time (but I won't try this yet without some assurance regarding problems that may arise from condensation into the mini when I take it out into the room).
    Any ideas, please.

  • 10.6.5 Causing Overheating on Mac Mini?

    I have been experiencing many panics on my older mac mini 1.66 GHz processor. I have taken my mac to the Apple store and they have replaced the logic board twice with no luck.
    After I started getting panic reports again, I noticed that my mini would work fine after boot up (cold), but as it got warmer I would start getting panic reports.
    I started to monitor the CPU temperature sensors using TemperatureMonitor (freeware) and noticed a panic would occur when the CPU temps got to around 60 C for a prolonged period of time (5-10 minutes). I also noticed when this happened that the fan wasn't making any noise, so I suspected the fan had failed.
    I downloaded smcFanControl (freeware) which reports CPU temps and fan speed to check if a fan speed signal was being sensed. I discovered the fan was working, but not changing speed as the CPU temp was increasing. I used smcFanControl to set the min speed to 3500 rpm, and that seems to keep the CPU temps down low enough where I don't have a problem. However, I must continue to monitor the CPU temp manually and increase the fan speed using smcFanControl to keep the temps below 60 C. This is annoying, because I am manually doing what the SMC should be doing for me.
    I am still trying to figure out why this started happening, because I have been running the same hardware configuration for 2 years with no issues. After digging through my console logs, it seems I started getting these panics after updating my software to 10.6.5. Since there is no way to roll-back an update, I am going to try re-installing 10.6.1 from the DVD and see if the problem goes away.
    Has anyone else correlated their kernel panic problems with the installation of 10.6.5?

    I installed the original 512MB RAM (2x256MB) and things seem much happier now. I reran the hardware test and found everything was A-OK.
    In an attempt to identify which RAM chip was bad so I could submit a warranty claim to the RAM manufacturer (Corsair, not Apple) I re-installed each of my 1GB RAM chips individually and performed the hardware test. Both chips passed without any problems.
    Just for giggles, I re-installed both 1GB RAM chips to put the computer back into the faulty configuration, and performed a PRAM reset. Then I reran the hardware check, and it finished with no errors. I then booted up and ran a BUNCH of tests loading up the CPU and playing videos. Again, no errors or panic reports. The CPU temps got to 82 C and the fan was only at 1500 rpm and I had no problems. I am going to let it stay like this for a few days to see if the problem comes back hoping that the PRAM reset fixed everything.
    I never performed a PRAM reset by itself, only the PMU and SMC resets. It was my understanding the PMU reset automatically did a PRAM reset at the same time so I never bothered to do it by itself.
    This will be really frustrating if a PRAM reset would have fixed this problem from the beginning... Odd that the "genius" folks would not have tried that first when I brought it in.
