  • I have lost all sound on macbook pro 10.6 and in ITunes can no longer play any cinema or tv shows purchased.  I believe it may have been caused by recent use of mini-display port   Toslink Audio to the TV.  What can be done?

I no longer have any sound on my macbookpro 10.6.8, not even beginning chime.
Furthermore, I find that I no longer have any images as well as no sound, from any
of my Itunes cinema, tv show purchases, etc.
I recently watched last week a couple of tv episodes through my TV
using a Mini Display Port + Toslink Audio purchased at Apple.
I use this device occasionally and haven't had any  problems til now.
Any suggestions to right the problem?.

In System Preferences>Sound do you have your internal speakers set as the output source?
You may have toggled on optical output with the Toslink cable - check to see if there's a red light coming from the port. If so, quickly plug and unplug a set of headphones for a number of times to see if you can toggle the switch back from optical to the internal speakers.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Simultanious audio output from both mini Displayport and Audio Output port?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone who already has audio+video output through the mini displayport set up can be so kind and answer the following questions for me:
Can audio be output simultaniously from 3.5mm audio port as well as the mini displayport? That is, if I output both video and audio to my reciever through the 2010 iMac's mini Diplayport, can i use the standard audio output port to provide line input for a further set of (active) speakers (analog would be fine)?
In the case both outputs CANNOT work simultaniously, which one will work if i have both plugged in? If the mini displayport has higher rank (or priority or what whatever i should call the one that works when both outputs are plugged in), and the reciever it is plugged into is switched off, will audio automatically switch to the standard audio port? Same question goes if the standard audio output port has higher rank/priority?
    Many thanks in advance!
Just in case you are wondering why the heck i would wanna do that, here's some background:
I am planning on setting up my new 27' iMac on a 'work' desk in my bedroom, where i can comfortably sit and work on the computer as well as use the beautiful screen as my bedroom TV. Since i also wanna use my mac for all my living room multimedia needs (movies, tv shows, music, etc), i plan on running a long (15m) audio+video HDMI cable all the way up to my reciever in my living room. Furthermore, i am also planning on running a USB cable to the living room (through something of this sort: http://www.coolgear.com/images/171632pro.jpg) plugged in to a usb hub mainly for mouse/keyboard availability in the living room, but also for other things such as external hard drives and so on. The problem is that, apart from having my audio play in the living room, i also want to provide line input to my reference monitors that will be located at the iMac desk and i obviously much prefer i get the line input directly from the mac rather than running a third cable from reciever back to the speakers.

    Anyone?
Is that so few people are using the new mini displayport for audio, or did i ask the wrong way?
Help will be greatly appriciated as i need this info in order to plan my purchases!

  • No audio from the mini port to hdmi

I was under the idea that if I wanted to convert my
Mini port to hdmi I would get audio as well. Am I missing something?

If your MBP was made before April 2010, there is no audio output from the Mini-Displayport, and you'll need to run a separate audio cable from your headphone port to the TV.

  • Kanex MIni DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter --NO SOUND

    Hi,
I just purchased a Kanex Mini DisplayPort+USB Audio to HDMI Adapter for my new Samsung flat screen so I could watch netflix movies. The guy at Tekserve (NYC based authorized dealer) said it's really cool b/c it's audio and video all in one. Two cables are attached to a small box on one side and on the other side of the box is for the HDMI cable which goes to the TV (most of you prpbably already know this) .
The two attached cables fit into the the USB (audio) + mini display port. The video works great, but no sound. I called Apple for tech support and we tried a few things like changing the sound output to USB, but no luck.
I can call Tekserve on Monday, but would love to figure this out before then for the week-end.
    Thanks everyone for your help.
    Mary

There are actually 2 different Mini Display port to HDMI adapters from Kanex. One supports 2 channel audio through the USB audio out cable, which is the one you have Mary. The other one with the extra audio plug cable supports 5.1 digital audio.

I don't have either of these adapters but I would think that you "should" be able to go into your System Preferences under Sound. If the USB plug from the adapter is plugged into your MacBook, then it should show up in the output window in the Sound preferences which you would then choose instead of outputting the sound to the built-in MacBook speakers.
At the bottom of the product description page of the adapter that you have (the USB 2.0 version), it says this:
+Sound Output setting on Macs must be changed to "USB Sound Device/USB Type" to have the adapter operating correctly.+*
Let us know if you get it working properly. I'm considering getting one also.
Sorry.... I just re-read your initial post and it sounds like you already DID try switching the sound output to USB with no luck. The only other thing I can think of is the adapter might be bad and maybe exchange it for another one from where you purchased it. Or you could maybe exchange it for the 5.1 digital audio out version. Although it sounds like your sound is going directly into the tv via HDMI and not a surround sound receiver.
Kanex does have tech support and contact links on their web page. Maybe you should email them directly about your problem. Unfortunately I'm sure you'll have to wait til sometime during the work week to get a reply back.

  • When using mini port with HDMI adapter, can only see front page (stars) will not display whats on screen??

Using a HDMI adapter on mini port the only picture on TV is the front Mac page (stars) and not whats on the Mac screen.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, after I posted my brain kicked in and I recalled that mid 09 were not audio compatible. not a big deal anyway since there are multiple ways to listen...
    again thanks,

  • Is 'Thunder port' compatible with 'mini port' cords/divices?

I am attempting to use my Imac 27" as a display for my xbox 360. So as instructed by "Apple chat" I purchased a KANEX XD connector for $140 and now it is not woking because of the Thunder port. Then I seeked assistance once more from "Apple chat" to purchase the Thunderbolt cord and by replacing the mini port cord with the thunder port cord my divices "should" work. I need to know if tis will work before purchase. I have beed instructed to purchase 3 items just for this one issue and 2 out of 3 have not worked and now I am -$160.00. Will purchasing this new cord solve my problem?

But before the transition from mini to thunder, the mini display port could be attached to a KANEX XD and then to an XBOX 360 using the previous 27" iMAC then as a monitor screen for game play...
So I already found out the NEW 27" iMAC can only receive video/audio from another thunderbolt port using the thunderbolt cord to a thunderbolt port again. Does this mean I am going to have to return all the purchased items and wait for a connector to become available to connect 360 to Thunderbolt?

  • Using hdmi mini port to connect to hdtv

using hdmi mini port to connect to hdtv. the displays mirror just fine but the audio doesnt. under the sound settings for output it only lists the internal speakers and should list the tv but doesn't, why?

If you connect the MacBook using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

  • Dolby digital 5.1 from mini port while in windows?

    Hello all,
I'm running the most current of all software, and I'm trying to get 5.1 dolby digital from the mini port to HDMI? All I can get is 2 channel. Is it possible to get this to work? I'm using KM player and I'm certain this player supports 5.1 output. Any advice would be helpful. Do I just need to buy a toslink (optical cable) or is there a way to make this work?
    Nate

As far as optical out goes, stereo sound from MP3s/WAVs/AACs etc, and stereo soundtracks seem to get converted by the Apple TV to a linear PCM type bitstream. Since Take 2.0 AppleTV can also output dolby digital 5.1 bitstream but does not need to do any onboard decoding.
Most amps/receivers that can accept an optical audio feed from a DVD player should do fine (certainly for the 5.1 DD). I would imagine if you are connecting via HDMI to the amp/receiver then you would have no trouble with any modern amps that support HDMI.

  • Cinema Display to a MacBookPro. DVI versus Mini-Port.

Hello, Wanting to hook up a Cinema Display to a MacBookPro Intel Duo with the DVI port (not Mini-Port. Not Thunderbolt).
Is there an adapter that converts the DVI config to work with a Cinema Display with a Mini-Port connector or do I need the version of Cinema Display that has the DVI connector?
    Thanks!

First, HDMI is not limited to any one resolution and as of HDMI 1.3 has an capability of 2560×1600 which I think is higher than the 27" display.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
Oh, and obiously, the LED Display can go to lower resoltution.
    Supported resolutions: 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP597
And under System preferences, it looks like it will go from 800x600 to 2560x1440.

  • Constant freezing eventually led to mini port not working

I run bootcamp, and it happens on windows as well so it must be a hardware problem. Unfortunately my coverage is up and I'm unable to pay for anything right now.
Basically, the computer was freezing up for a while, a lot of the time it just freezes up for a couple seconds, or a few seconds at a time, and then sometimes it runs fine. Other times it will completely freeze and I'll have to do a hard shut down. Now my mini port stopped working(I was using an adapter for VGA), also both on windows and mac sides. Computer still freezes up. Just had the hard drive replaced a few months ago when it was under warranty, and it was fine until about a month ago.
Not sure what to do, I keep things pretty clean, I used to build PC's. I ran dsk chk everything was fine.
I want to open this thing up but

Thanks to whoever moved this topic to the correct place.

  • My MacBookPro 10.7.5 had been streaming tv thru the mini port/HDMI cable. Suddenly it stopped working. My tv screen is now black. I have tried restarting the computer with the cord connected. The computer is otherwise working.

I had been streaming tv with my MacBookPro 10.7.5 for several years using a cord from the mini port to the HDMI plug on the TV. Suddenly it stopped working. My computer otherwise works fine but there is my computer screen image is no longer being transmitted to the tv. The tv is black. I have it on the correct input.
I tried restarting the computer with the cord attached. Thanks in advance.

Test the cord on another external display or test with another cord.
    Ciao.

  • My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter.

My Viewsonic monitor won't work with the Imac using the Mini Port to DVI adapter. I also tried the HDMI to DVI adapter ane the Mac-Mini with same result. The monitor does work on my older Macbook Pro that has the DVI connector. Is it a Software/Driver issue ?

Should be extremely simple, please carefully read Connect multiple displays to your Mac. If you still have problems then it's probably a cable issue that would be resolved by replacing the adapter cable. You should be using this adapter. If you are using a third party adapter that might be your problem!

  • External video projector - How can I hook up my Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter onto my new MacBookAir if the machine does not have a mini port (but only 2 USBs and 1 Thunderbolt)?

    Hi
How can I hook up my DVI Adapter onto my new MacBookAir if the machine does not have a mini port (but only 2 USBs and 1 Thunderbolt)?
Is there a DVI adaptor already for Thunderbolt?
    Thanks,
    JFR

The Mini Display port and Thunderbolt port use compatible connector bodies. Your current Mini Display to DVI or VGA adapter will still work as before on the newer Thunderbolt capable machines.

  • Mini port to HDMI not working

Trying to connect iMac to my TV with mini port to hdmi genuine adaptor with no success. Works ok if I connect iMac to works Microsoft laptop, it displays immediately. Then connect Microsoft laptop to TV , absolutely fine.
I have looked on Internet & apparently in Display on iMac , arrangements should appear but doesn't on mine.
    Any suggestions welcome please.

Hi, thank you for your response.
I think it was my terminology.
What I bought today from PC World was a IMDHDD13 Mini Display Port adaptor which they advised would work!
It plugs into the thunderbolt port on Mac, screen turns blue for a couple of seconds then returns to normal.
In DISPLAY, arrangements doesn't appear & if I search it, it tells me it is hidden because there is no other screen connected.
I'm thinking now after reading your post this is not a genuine apple part PC World have sold me!
