Mini Port on Mac Pro dosent work

Hi there, Just get my new Mac Pro 12 core. I tried to install my 2 monitors that have already been tested on other computers. On is plugged into the DVI port and work just fine, the other one is plugged into one miniDV port and then into an HDMI cable into my monitor and dosent work. Ive done my software upgrades by the way. Is there something I should know about these mini Dv ports, other than they are really cheap and lots of people seems to complain about them?
Thank you

The new Mini DisplayPorts are not the same as the previous Mini DVI used on some older models. Be sure you have the correct adapter before proceeding.
Presuming they are the correct ports, the cable must be completely inserted into the connector to make a reliable connection. All the metal part should disappear into the connector, leving only the plastic part showing on the outside.

For some reason, the Flash Player on my MAC Pro stopped working, I've checked the install on my Adobe Flash Player and the are current, but the plug-ins don't seem to be working.  Can anyone help me get it working?

It happened w/ my MacPro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon about 5 months ago; tried everything I could think of including multiple downloads of Flash, and hadn't seen any solutions here.  Adobe insisted many times that I download & update, but the newest vers. wouldn't work on the computer.
On checking Adobe/Flash was reading the computer as being an earlier model. So the new version of Flash wouldn't work w/ it.  Snow Leopard 10.6.8 was being read correctly but not the computer model (can't remember what MP model  it was reading).
Nothing worked. So -- a very old PC trick: If nothing else works get the hammer out and bludgeon it-- might work. So I reset everything by putting the Snow Leopard  install disk in, held down 'C' on restart and let it run.
Didn't take anything off the HDD first, just ran the install disk over everything.
The experts on the forums are probably cringing right now & I'd like very much for them to jump in. Love to know how my computer model was being mis-read. All I can say is, for the brave and desparate, it worked for me. Something to keep in mind.
It helped that I had a new computer on order & have 2 backups, one being mandatory. Might work only the one time but worth a check.
Good luck on working this one out.

  • Firewire port on Mac Pro

If I use an adapter to connect firewire 400 to 800 port on Mac Pro. Will entire firewire bus on Mac Pro reduce to 400 speed or each port is independent?

All ports feed into the same bus, but you can run a 400 device from one port and an 800 device on another port and both will operate to their respective theoretical speeds. However, if you daisy-chain FW800 devices into a FW400 device and then to the Mac Pro, all will operate at 400 speeds.

  • Ethernet port on MacBook Pro only works under certain conditions

Since I've purchased my MacBook Pro over two years ago now with an initial installment of OSX 10.5.x, I've had a small annoyance if while the OS was up and running and my physical network interface was disconnected and reconnected, a connection could not be reestablished until I shutdown, restart or put my Mac to sleep and woke it back up with the cable connected to the ethernet port. It would randomly work as it should if I connected and disconnected it over and over again until the machine decided I've stimulated it enough to allow me to use it. But it's recently become a real annoyance for me since the tab on my longest ethernet cable broke and it no longer locks it in place and now the slightest budge displaces the cable and I have to put the laptop to sleep often to reestablish a connection.
I would opt to Wi-Fi, but my Mac (surprise, surprise) out of 4 other laptops is the only one whose signal is too weak to use where I use them most. I've reinstalled the OS once to no avail months ago and the problem persisted after downgrading to Slowleopard a day after it's release.
Anyone have any ideas what may be going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello DavidJoyce
Best thing to do is to buy a new Cat 6 Ethernet cable.

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro FireWirenot working with Hitachi/SimpleTech DuoPro drive

So I've got an early 2009 Mac Pro that is loaded with Bootcamp and Vista64. I am looking for an external raid option that works for Windows and didn't have any luck with any eSata PCIe card so I thought I would just use a firewire device. So I picked up a 2TB Duo Pro drive by SimpleTech.
My firewire ports work fine with other devices, but not with this drive and not with either operating system. It works fine though USB, but just doesn't do anything with either firewire 400 or 800.
    Any thoughts?

I have an early 2008 iMac and I have the exact same drive by Simpletech, 2TB Duo Pro. It does work on FW800 but connects at 400 UNLESS you power the drive on and plug it in while OS X is up and running, then the connection will be 800. Anyhow, I would make sure you have a good FW cable and also try the FW400 cable that came with it. I bought a FW800 cable and it worked fine so unless the Mac Pro and iMac use different FW hardware, I think it IS compatible.

  • Mac mini server to Mac Pro

I have a 2010 C2D Mac mini server running SLS (10.6.8 SnowLeopardServer) providing file service to about 10 iMacs and MacPro's in a photo studio. The mini is connected to two 16TB R5 arrays via FW800.
All works fine but would like more speed and expand ability so am thinking of converting one of the older MacPro towers (2.66Ghz Intel Zeon Quadcore or newer) to become the new server.
Can I just migrate the Mini OS and all it's settings over to the MacPro tower? Clone it instead? Or is there some software limit that makes the mini server only work on the mini?
Also, would I be better "served" by a new Mac mini server using Thunderbolt daisy chained?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    Server Backup-
There was an Open Directory Backup Archive and Restore command in near-current version of Mac OS X Server, and it backed up the Open Directory database and parameters specific to the configuration of your Server. My memory is that it is a feature in Server Admin. I will try to find a reference if I can. Using that would allow you to clean-Install on the Mac Pro and restore the backup-up parameters, and continue as if nothing had changed.
EDIT: described in the Open Directory Admin manual pg 196:
    Archiving an Open Directory Master
You can use Server Admin to archive a copy of an Open Directory master’s directory and authentication data. You can archive a copy of the data while the Open Directory master is in service.
    The following files are archived:
    • LDAP directory database and configuration files
    • Open Directory password server database
    • Kerberos database and configuration files
    • Local directory domain and shadow password database

  • Whats the best way to move from mac mini server to Mac pro server?

Hi everyone. I am currently running a mac mini server and it's maxed out. I have just purchased a Mac Pro server and I was wondering if anyone has moved there data in a similar scenario. Is it as simple as restoring a time machine backup to the new server? Any insight would most appreciated as I need this to go smoothly. Thank you.

Apple's official Time Machine documentation says NOT to use TM to back up an entire server.
The reason being is that it will NOT properly back up your databases.  The three in question most often used with OS X server is the Mail DB, the MySQL DB and the Open Directory.
Database experience tells me that reason behind their not supporting Databases is the issue with reading info that's being written to or read from while TM is doing it's thing.  It's likely that if the server is under load when the time machine backs up, you're going to get an inconsistent copy.
The ONLY apple documented GUI method of restoring a server is by using the Setup Assistant during the initial setup of a server.  (using a firewire cable to connect and having your old server in target disk mode)
This in fact I would say is the most reliable method of migration.
    (my 2 cents)
Write more and let us know how the new server works on a continual basis!  I've not heard of anyone having a successful restore taken from a live server.

  • Using a Mac Mini with my Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro and a Mac Mini, but only one monitor and one keyboard. Can I hook up the Mac Mini so it will appear on the monitor (like another hard drive) when I am using the Mac Pro? I would like to use the Mac Mini strictly as a storage device and be able to drag files from the Mac Pro to the Mac Mini.

Put the Mac Mini in Target Disk Mode (start while holding "T") and connect it to the Mac Pro with a FireWire cable. If you want it to always start in Target Disk Mode:

What's wrong with using a hub?
    A few things:
With a hub, all devices must share the bandwidth of the one built-in port the hub is on. If one device on the hub takes up all the port bandwidth, too bad for the others. Or they will fight it out. But with most types of USB cards, each individual port on the card gets full USB bandwidth...no conflicts.
You need to use up a built-in USB port to plug in a hub, so adding a 4-port hub only gives you 3 more new ports in reality. With a USB card, all card ports are in addition to the Mac Pro ports.
A hub needs to take up one more outlet on your power strip. Or two or three outlets if it has a big transfomer. A USB card uses the Mac Pro power supply directly with no additional messy power and data cables.
A hub probably doesn't cost that much less than a USB card, if there is any price difference at all, yet the card has so many more advantages.
About the only reason to not get a USB card is that you've already used up the slots in your Mac Pro.

  • I'm looking at getting into home movie editing. What Mac pro would work the best besides the one that costs the most?

Which Mac Book would work good enough for home video editing?

No need to go for the highest-cost MBP - an entry level 15" non-retina MBP should work quite well for you. You can begin by using iMovie and then, as your needs and expertise increase, switch to Final Cut Pro, if you wish. Your machine will be able to handle it.
Take a trip to the Apple Store online and look at the options for the non-Retina 15" MBP - and remember that you can always upgrade the RAM and the hard drive as a DIY project.
    Good luck,

  • Which Mac Pro System works best with Premiere Pro CC?

I am looking to upgrade my 12 core tower to the newer Mac Pro. I am wondering if anyone out there has suggestion as to what makes the most sense financially in terms of which  flavor of Mac Pro to get? For example, Is there a significant speed increase between the 8 core vs 12 core, and the D500 Vs the D700 Video Cards ? And how much RAM ? Normally the temptation is to go out and get the maxed out system, but reading though the forums with the various issues people are having with performance on the newer Mac Pro's and Premiere, would be great to know how it stacks up in the real world.
Appreciate any input in this regard.
    Cheers

I thought the only graphic card options on the new Mac Pro are all AMD cards, is that not correct? You can use the Quadro?
    MtD
Yes, thanks I forgot about that. I was just going by what I have, which is an older model so I can apparently just replace it with a newer Quadro.
I'm no apple hardware expert and I'm not sure how the ports are setup. Apple's official support site only lists the AMD cards Chris mentioned for their most recent model, but that's also listed as late 2013 which doesn't seem right either. (or is it?) Note that they also list my mid-2010 model as only supporting ATI Radeon HD 577 and 5870 but I've been running a Quadro FX4800 in it with good results for several years, so I know that part's not right. So I'm not sure I'd take that site entirely literally, but of course you would not want to risk getting the wrong card. You should probably enlist the help of apple support (and/or forums) to get more details and assurance before purchasing, but bottom line is you'll want something with plenty of RAM (~ 4 GB or higher if possible) which will also be compatible with CUDA and or OPenCL playback in prpro.

  • Install Mac Mini harddrive into Mac Pro?

Hi all! Any idea if it would be possible to psychally take my hard drive out of my mini and install it into an empty hard drive bay in the mac pro? Im going to keep my mini around for backup and this would be the most ideal way to use it.

Ultimately it depends on which mac mini you're talking about. The older PowerPC version had PATA drives where the newer Intel ones have SATA drives.
Placing either drive type into an external enclosure is the recommended course of action.
However, if you are talking about a PATA drive you can in fact install it into the free 2nd optical drive bay. You will need to get a 2.5" to 3.5" drive conversion kit (it's really a simple bridge board that additionally allows the use of the 3.5" power cable) and the mounting may be rather tricky due to the short cables although it'll go into that space without a problem.
