Mini Running Increasingly Slow

Hi,
I have had a look on the forums but am unable to find a definitive answer.
My Mac Mini is running more and more slowly. It is taking an age to open any apps and even web pages.
I have more than 10% free on the internal HDD and use an external HDD to store music/videos/pictures etc. I am running Tiger and have made no modifications to the Mac.
Is there anything I can do to speed this up or would you recommend a clean install of Snow Leapard? Seeing as how it is so cheap to purchase?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Adam

If the hard drive is not full (meaning you have at least 10% free available space), then usually the problem is that the Mini does not have enough real RAM for the number of programs running at the same time -- and is over-using the Virtual Memory (the hard drive) to compensate.
Please report what the window says when you go to Apple Menu > About this Mac.
Then, after your Mini has been running programs for a while, run Utilities > Activity Monitor and click on the System Memory tab.
We need to know what it says at the bottom for PageOuts and PageIns.
If the ratio of Outs/Ins is significantly greater than 10%, than you are running too many programs for the amount of real RAM that your Mini has.
Please note that Activity Monitor lists Ins and Out, but we want the ratio of Outs to Ins, so you have to reverse the numbers.

  • Mac Mini running so slow

Not sure how to diagnose issues on my Mac, but I gathered I should run Etre and post results here.  I know I could add more RAM, but this is so slow that I have to believe something else is going on.  Can someone spot anything unusual in the following?

  • Mac mini running EXTREMELY slow

I bought the Mac Mini server just 4 months ago and it is running incredibly slow.  I do not use it as a server, just bought this version for the extra disk space.
The CPU load is very low, and less than 2 GB of 8GB total memory is used by the system.  But the Spotlight seacrh simply does not work (it shows the greay wheel going round and round).
    Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.  Below is the info you requested.  I repalced my user-name in the log with "USERNAME".  I also deleted many exactly the same error messages for easy readability.
I moved all the media and picture files out of the home directory.  I see that Spotlight is now indexing.  But in console I now see hundreds of messages like below:

  • 2011 mac mini running crazy slow since last software update

    Hi,
Just bought a brand new mac mini about two months age, and since updating to Lion and installing all the updates since, my computer is now running super slow, espacially with apps like launch pad and running safari in full screen. Any suggestions on how to fix this? or anyone know what's causing it? any help would be much appreciated!
    2011 Mac Mini (base model), 2011 update 13" Macbook Air, 2010 i5 27" iMac, 16GB iPad 2, 16GB iPhone 4

when you run the activity monitor, what processes are consuming your RAM/CPU cycles?  Looking at the page ins/outs in the Memory tab wll give you a hint as to whether it's a RAM issue.

  • What to do when mini runs very slow

I already cleaned up the harddisk and trew all the stuff i dont need away but still the mini is very slow. can you help me?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Mac Mini runs SOOO SLOW.  Wheel of Death spins all the time.  Should I reload all the software?

I own four Macs, which includes three laptops and a Mac Mini.  One laptop uses Mavericks, the other two laptops are Lions. They ALL work GREAT at a quick speed.  The Mini, on the same wireless, runs soooo much slower, I wonder if there's a virus on it. The wheel of death is constantly spinning every time I click anywhere, i.e. Opening a new program, new file, or surfing the net. SOMETIMES FOR 30 SECONDS +.  Nothing is quick.   I took it to the Apple store, and they said there's plenty of space on it.  It's OS X Lion 10.7.5. 11 G63.  I noticed if I shut it down and restart it, it works better with less tabs open in Google Chrome.
I really don't know anything about computers. I have Word and Excel loaded on it. Should I delete the hard drive and start all over? Could there be a virus on it?  I don't know where the software is for the Microsoft product... If I wrote down the serial numbers of Word and Excel, is that enough to reload it?
    Thanks so much!

Make sure your trash is emptied, also your iPhoto trash is emptied, your caches are are clear, build up of these can rally slow things down.

Chance of a virus is slim, macs are quite good at taking care of themselves, and most anti-virus software will slow down your computer and not really protect you at all, so stay away from that stuff.

  • Mac Mini runs incredibly slow?

I installed Snow Leopard and computer was fine, then a message came up that an upgrade was available "do you want to install" so I downloaded and installed, white took a very long time, two hours, and restarted the Mini. It was like the computer was running at one eighth it's normal speed. This is a late 2006 intel Mini. Please help. Thank you

    See:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5629907?tstart=0
How much memory do you have?
Did you update to Lion? 10.7.5? That is the last update for the 2007 Mini. It uses more memory than Snow Leopard and will be slower if not enough memory

  • I upgraded the OS system on my 2011 mac mini.  It now runs very slow.  Do I need to increase the ram.  I only have 2 GB now.

My 2011 mac mini now runs very slow.  I have to wait on it to do basic things.  I only have 2 GB of ram.  It came with this amount and it fan fine for several years.  But I upgraded to the most recent Os system and now it runs slow.  What do I need?  More RAM?

I will upgrade to 8GB. Thanks for the advice.  Also have an older (2009) 24" IMAC and it also runs slow with the upgrade. It has 4 GB. I think I will replace it with a brand new 21 or 27 inch.  Thanks for the response.

That's one way to justify a new Mac. :-)  Adding more RAM to the 2009 model is cheaper, though (but I'm guessing not as much fun).
