Mini Server makes odd noise from speaker!

Anyone else getting a noise from their Mac Mini server speaker that sounds like a file being deleted?
No regular pattern to when it comes, it's unprompted and happens even when no one is logged on to the network.
I have a (used) Mac Mini 2011 with two (new) 1TB drives in RAID 1 and a clean instal of the latest OS X with all updates applied and the server app purchased two weeks ago from the App Store. It's been doing it (more often in the evenings) almost since I set up the server.
Anyone got any thoughts?

Not so much clicky as just a subtle little buzzing undertone to the ordinary quiet hum of the Mini when the fan's not spun up that makes my brain think "something mechanical needs oiling", IE it's a motory kind of noise like metal moving against metal. (Which I suppose could be the HD spinning on its axel, perhaps, it seems unrelated to any sort of "reading disk now" ticks. Um, yeah, the Mini is probably on the desk a little too close to my right ear that I know what this all sounds like... ) Too, too familiar with HD Clicking Of Death, that was last May's "...THAT ain't right" $300 moment -- I have been backing up religiously since then, believe me! Wouldn't have thought of Disk Utility RE a possible mechanical issue, I'll have a look...

My Powermac g5 makes weird noises from PSU is not continuous it does that irregularly could be the PSU Frying or is just the fans going bad ?

I'd say it's most likely the fan going bad, but have you blown the dust out of the PSU lately?

  • DVD drive makes odd noise

Hello! I posted on this a couple of days ago but no one responded so I thought I would repost and reword what is going on.  I've had two HP Pavilion DV6 laptops from walmart and both of them have DVD drives that will make an odd noise randomly as if its trying to spin up a disc really quickly and then stops.  It sounds like it would if you ejected the drive then put it back in with nothing in it.  The first laptop did this almost every 5 min and this new one does it once or twice every half hour or so.  I've seen on another forum where different models like the d6 and dv6 have had this issue as well with no response from HP or anyone else.  Any ideas?

At this point, I highly recommend you contact HP Technical Phone Support .

  • Too bad mini server won't boot from an external drive

It won't. Enterprise TEch support confirmed this. I bought thew new mini server to get a good value fast machine with a quad i-7.
What's the purpose of Thuderbolt if my apps and doc folders have to reside on a SATA disk?
They really should have non server version with the i7 quad.
Even better Apple should make it clear that this is the case. Even the guy in the apple store said I coud boot it form an external drive!

Yes this will all take some time for sure.
If you want to keep lion server on your current machine, then yes, that is correct. It doesnt hurt to have a few spare 500gb+ hard drives to help the long process.
See there was previous controversy with the mac mini servers with the dual cores (the one I have) because we all wanted the better processors but to not run the server version and some also wanted to be able boot from other drives. Same as you..
In non lion versions of OSX you would normally put the SL Server DVD or SL DVD into your mac and instead of installing a fresh OS, you would select utilities , then restore from time machine backup. You could also obviously use an external drive or SD card with SL or SL server installer loaded on it to install the OS or perform the restore.
    That being said
I personally only know how to use a Snow leopard Server or Regular snow leopard installer DVD (or disc imaged external hard drive partition as just mentioned) to use time machine to restore an OS. I personally dont have experience with the lion disc repair for using its utilities to restore from a backup. Im sure it works the same way though when you hold option and boot from it..
If you are looking to go NON server on your OS you must have a Snow leopard retail version DVD (not leopard upgrade version)  to be installed on to an external drive.
So what you would do is Set up a partitioned external hard drive and load it up with Snow leopard, upgrade it in app store to lion ($29 ) , then update it with software update, back it up to another partition using time machine, then boot from the install dvd (or disc imaged partitioned installer of SL) , go to utilities, and select restore from backup, when its asks wher eto install choose the external you want to boot from (must be partitioned using GUID partition table) and install. When you want to boot from that drive, hold option right after you power up your machine until it gives you the option of the drive you want to boot from, select it and boot.
Unfortunately like I said you will have to have a snow leopard retail installer (no longer at the apple store only online or ebay for $30) and then would have to 'upgrade' to lion in order to NOT have lion server version on a mac mini set up for server.
If lion server version is good for you then yes do what you wrote in the reply would work. My experience with server snow leopard was that it was slower than snow leopard regular and it extremely interfered with my music production even though I was not running any of its server options..
    I hope this helps..

  • Do I need a domain name in order to connect to my Mini Server 10.8.2 from outside my network?

I am working on setting up my mac mini server. Aside from in home file sharing I want ot be able to connect to some files remotely and even upload files, say pictures from my camera, to my server from outside my network. I am only looking to have maybe 2 users that have access. Should I get a domain name from a place like GoDaddy? in order to set up server to use domain in initial setup? I have 2 Drobos connected with my music, videos and pictures and I wat to access them from an Android, Windows and iPod device when away from home. Any how-tos out there or good step by step guides?
    Thanks for any information.

A normal address like www.domain.com is intended to work with static IP addresses, DynDNS is a service specifically intended for dynamic addresses and it will therefore automatically update the address e.g. name.dyndns.org to match the dynamic IP address each time it changes.
Some home broadband routers have built-in support to act as a DynDNS client but if yours does not then you can run the DynDNS software on your Mac server. This will then tell the DynDNS servers what your current dynamic IP address is so they can map it to your host name.
The result will be that your users can use a name like yourname.dyndns.org to access your server and not have to worry about the fact your IP address may change.
You would still need to run a VPN server to allow your remote users to connect to your network but OS X Server can do this. You could also run a website but depending on your needs that might be better done by using a web hosting service.

  • A-Watch: Battery overheating and makes odd noises

Got my 38mm SS black sport, 1st of May and it works fine on the first day then on the 2nd day it makes odd (buzzing) noises for the notifications even if it was on mute & I even turned off the haptic. 3rd day, random odd noises with or without the notifications and it overheated! Send it back to apple and they said they will replace it within 4 days .....

I should probably know this, but what is the proper way to clean the fans?
I'm afraid I have never seen a guide to fan cleaning for iMacs, Behnaz. Its a pity, because I suspect that this is an issue that is implicated in quite a few peoples heating and fan noise issues with the iMac. It would be nice if Apple offered a regular "annual service" for such things!
The most basic step is to carefully vacuum air intake grill on the lower edge of the computer. Some people have reported that this alone makes a big difference.
The next step would involve removing the back and following the processes for fan removal accessible through http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300205 to access the fans, and gently clean the blades with a miniature vacuum cleaner (much better than using compressed air, which may simply blow the stuff into a place where it can do more harm than good) and a cotton bud or similar.
If your computer is still under warranty , though, bear in mind that you will void the warranty if anything goes wrong, and that you should take regular "antistatic" precautions. In such a case I would suggest getting it done profesionally by an Apple dealer. In a bad case it may be better to simply replace the fan.

  • Back to back scratch noises from speaker and headphone jack, very faint

I'm having a headphone/speaker issue, but it is very difficult to describe. When I use my computer, the speakers or headphones (if plugged in) will occasionally emit two quick scratchy noises back to back. The speakers and headphones work great, but I can't figure out what the noises are. They sound kinda like if you were to gently scratch the macbook pro casing with your fingernail. Any ideas as to what can cause it to happen?

it seems that m1r3k found a very good workaround, at least for the Mid 2010 Mac mini models (that I'm using right now). I don't know if it works also with more recent Mac mini models.
Re: After upgrading to lion, cant select HDMI sound setting
Open Audio MIDI Setup.app in /Applications/Utility, click the + (plus) button in the bottom left corner of the window and choose "Create Multi-Output Device". In the new device settings tick the HDMI "Use" checkbox and you're done. Simply go to the usual System Preferences Audio panel and choose the newly created device, without the need to unplug the audio cable from the back of the Mac mini. You can also name the new audio device as you want.
    NOTE:
This is only a workaround for a deliberate choice made by Apple on OS X Lion 10.7.2 and beyond:
Mac mini: About HDMI audio and headphones
Please let Apple know (here or here) how this has made things unnecessary awkward for users and needs to be fixed (these forums don't count, they are not read by Apple's employees)!

  • Strange noise from speaker.

    Hi there,
I have bought iPod nano 5G and everything seemed to work perfectly, until now. I found that sometimes that internal speaker is making some noise. It's like "ssss" all the time iPod is turned on.
I understand that this behavior is normal for ordinary speakers, but.. when I open any game, then ingame set SFX to 0%, noise dissapears. After rebooting device it's here again, annoying as always.
I tried to restore my iPod, even few times. And still no effect. What should I do?

Rebooting resets volume to default level I believe.
Did the nano get wet or fall into any water?
If you are always getting a hissing sound coming from the external speaker, you should consider visiting the Genius Bar at an Apple store.

  • Computer makes odd noises

Well, I'd like input on two sounds that come from inside the computer and I will try to be as descriptive as possible:
1). A very faint (not continuous) squeaking noise that goes when the fans work up a little, but also remains when they quiet down. This happened once so far.
2). A very unusual tapping/light bonking noise (for a lack of better word) that happens occasionally, but not every time, the computer has just shut down or started up.
I don't think it has to do with the fans, because they sound normal, and I recognize the usual "loading noises". I just don't know how much concern, in general, is to be put on the more rare sounds coming from inside the computer. Everything appears to be working fine but I'd like to make sure it's not something to be too concerned about.

I should probably know this, but what is the proper way to clean the fans?

  • Macbook makes odd noise

    Hi all,
my macbook is like around three months old. But recently I keep on hearing a clicking sound every now and then. It's very odd. It is definitely coming from inside the machine and it is intermittent.
Does any one know what this could be?
    Thank you.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is most likely the hard disk, and, if that is the case, it is bad news. Although this is rare in a new machine but after all, it is electronics. Suggest run disk utility and click verify disk. Or better still run the hardware test for your machine. Post back here and perhaps someone might have a better suggestion.

  • E66 beeping noise from speaker

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with my E66. The speaker has a background beeping noise (about 4-5kHz) when speaking normally on the phone. I have had the phone changed 2 times but the problem still exist. The same problem has occured in all 3 phones. Is this a normal problem and what is the solution to this? The first phone was purchased a week ago at Elisa Shopit in Espoo.

This sounds like too much of a coincidence, with all 3 phones the same.
Does it happen with every call and all the time or does it only happen at a specific location when you call a specific number?
