Mini + Sony w3000 bravia or Samsung LE40F86 at 1080p

I have searched and searched for info on this and not been able to find a definitive answer.
I am wanting to buy a mac mini and a 40" LCD TV. I have narrowed my options to the Sony Bravia KDL40W3000 in first choice or the Samsung LE40F86 in second place, depending which will work with the Mac.
I don't want a VGA connection, I want full 1080p via HDMI.
The issue is will the screen display (without hacking) at 1080p correctly without overscan.
The Sony I believe has a facility called Full Pixel which should allow 1:1 pixel mapping, as does the Samsung, under a function called Justscan.
Can anyone help me out here please?

Paul,
I own a Sony KDL-46W3000 and can confirm that you can get a full-fledged 1080p DVI-HDMI connection from the new Mac Minis.
You are right that the Sony has a full pixel resolution settings, so no overscan or black border issues.
It's a bit funny how it works: While Display preferences shows "1080i", the signal actually is 1080p, confirmed by the TV's signal info box that you can make appear. This setting was the default since I hooked up Mac and Sony out of the box.
Yesterday I played around for the first time with all kinds of screen resolutions, and when I switched back to 1080i in Display prefs, I actually got real 1080i all of sudden and not 1080p anymore. This also confirmed by the Sony's signal info. 1080i was visibly a worse signal: not as smooth as 1080p and when moving windows vertically and slowly, the movement makes lines appear and disappear with a little flicker (not too bad, but a big difference to 1080p).
The only way I found to get back my 1080p was to use the checkbox "Show screen resolutions in menu bar" and select my old resolution from the popup of "previously used" resolutions. Mind you, both 1920x1080 resolutions are labeled the same. (This trick I read online somehwere).
So while 1080p works, it is not listed as such in Display prefs. Weird, I have no clue why, hopefully this gets enhanced in the next 10.5 release.
The Sony screen gives a really good picture. Just make sure to switch off all those extra signal-correction stuff that Sony puts in their standard or vivid settings. You also might be surprised that at 40inch you will need to get quite close to your screen to see all the details. My 46inch is ten feet away and some websites and small fonts are becoming hard to read. I'm not in need of glasses, 1080 lines is just a fine resolution...

  • Mini late 2006 DVI HDMI Samsung LE26A457

A couple of people on other forums, like me, are having trouble connecting our Mac Mini DVI to HDMI on Samsung screens.
Is there a known issue? Is there a fix of some kind. It seems like the Mac Mini is very very picky about handshaking, whereas all other sources to the TV are not.
The samsung has an HDMI that is recommends using for DVI-HDMI and it still gives me a black screen.

Alan, you did get success at some point when you saw Snow Leopard on the TV. That was when your computer's System Preferences/Display preferences where likely set to "mirror.' You likely should not be using the 'mirror' setting so uncheck that option.
Turn on the HDTV, plug in the HDMI connector from your computer.
In the Display preferences, make sure your display on the computer is 1920x1200. The set the relationship of the two screens, your computer screen and your HDTV. For example drag the little display representing the TV to the right of the little display representing the computer.
Make sure the menu bar is on the little screen representing your computer. You can drag the little menu bar to the correct screen.
Go to the controls on the HDTV to select your desired video source, such as HDMI 1. You should have some signal detected.
Start a HD movie running in a window on your computer screen and then drag the window to the right off the computer screen. It should appear on the HDTV. From your computer, select the option to run the movie "full screen". Voila!
    At least we hope so...

  • Profile for Sony DSC-P200 and Samsung NV24HD created

    Hi,
just started plying around with LPC and create a profile for my old pictures from the Sony DSC-P200 and Samsung NV24HD.
I have uploaded/emailed them to Adobe, so they should show up in the near future.

    Hi simonsaith,
Is it the Samsung NV24HD (Samsung 4.3-15.5 mm  F2.8-5.9) profile that you added?
    Yes, that's it.
In the camera make drop down, if you type in "samsun" (which will trigger ALPD to do a wildcard search that matches any make that contains "samsun", your profile will actually show up. This is because the camera embedded "SAMSUNG TECHWIN" as the camera make for the EXIF.
Thanks for telling me. I would not have expected that I can do a wildcard search in a dropdown field there. I suggest making this more obvious in a next software version. I bet very few users are aware of it.
The naming things has some more traps. The built in lens' maker is actually called "Schneider-Kreuznach", but LPC seems to have issues with double names and creates a "Schneider". That's why I renamed it to "Samsung" to keep it in an existing group. I hope future software versions can cope a little better with this.
This seems similar to the behaviour when I put in "Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar ..." into the Sony DSC-P200 lenstype.
That special camera actually is also even more difficult for LPC when it comes to the model type. I did shorten it in the profile. The model is given as "NV24HD, VLUU NV24HD, LANDIAO NV106HD" which is a little clumsy when used as profile name.

  • I have direct tv and a new Sony 4k Bravia tv. How do I know if I am getting a true 4k picture?

I have direct tv and a new Sony 4k Bravia tv.  How do I know if I am getting a true 4k picture?

Hello, Most likely if your Cable provider has gave it to you a Cable Box with 4K (wich is very expensive) you will receive a few channels in Ultra HD (4K resolution of 3,840 dots × 2,160 lines) other wise, you may try Internet Services apps with 4K resolution as Netflix. And the last option that you may have is using a BluRay Player watching movies mastered in 4K. I think the following article may help: https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/45145/ Hope it works! Sam

  • Sony X85C - Bravia Sync Issue with Samsung Homecinema and WD Live Box

Hello  I purchased the 2015 4k Sony TV X85c line, its the 55" with Model Nr: KD55X8507C (silver bezel). The latest Android TV version from mid July is installed and the TV is working fine - except for the interaction with my 2 other components:- a Western Digital Live streaming player box- a Samsung Homecinema HT-D6750W  I knew i could run into problems when mixing up brands, but the issue now is really bugging me: The Samsung homecinema is connected via the HDMI 4 ARC to the Sony TV. The Westen Digital is connected to the homecinema. All devices are HDMI CEC compatible, thus on the Sony I can see the other devices and even control them with the Sony remote - which "concept wise" is really neat, but something is failing.  It seems that the Sony trys constantly to switch between audio system (Samsung) and its own TV speakers when choosing how to deliver the sound. This somehow interfers with the menu dialogs of the Sony. As soon as I connect the Samsung Homecinema and go into the display menu to change image settings / modes it the menu will crash after some seconds (it just fades away). This does not happen when the homecinema is not connected, but then of course im missing the sound of my homecinema.  So there seems to be a certain interference and I assume it could be because of the constant audio switching between TV and audio system. I already tried to deactivate all HDMI-CEC features on the devices, but for the Sony TV's bravia sync its impossible to deactivate fully (the menu is just greyed and "on").  I'm getting some new and state of the art HDMI cables later this day, maybe this will bring a positive effect. Anyone experiences something similiar with the X85C range of products? Is there a way to handle it? ThanksAndre / xenom0rph

I "solved" the problem: Bravia Sync does not seem to be compatible with HDMI CEC / Anynet of the Samsung homecinema. I deactivated all HDMI CEC features on the samsung player and the WD TV Live box, and then the deactivation of bravia sync was possible on the TV. After that the issue with the menu crashes was gone. Now i try to get digital audio with optical to the samsung player. So i connected optical out from the Sony TV to the optical in of the player. There are different settings to be made in the sonys audio menu now which I'm still not sure what to do. It has different compression modes for the audio (auto 1, auto 2, pcm). PCM seems to work for most digital audio content, but i fear DTS is not supported by the Sony. I tried the XBMC Kodi Android App on the Sony TV and got digital audio on some movies, but not all of em....not sure if its an app or TV problem.  Oh well..for the moment i stay with the WD live streaming box which supports all audio formats and is connected via HDMI to the player, but its just a very slow cpu in there, so it would be cool to use the more powerful TV as streaming player.

  • Mac Mini - Sony Bravia display issue

I connected the above 32" HDTV to my Mac mini using the DVI - HDMI configuration and has worked perfectly.
However, after reboot during the recent software update (14/05/09) the resolution changed and I have now lost about an inch from the perimeter which is mighty annoying. I have tried various display settings but none of them works correctly.
Can anyone suggest a reason for this?
Just before the update I deleted an old user that I hadn't used in a long time. Could this be relevant?

Exactly the same problem here, but no changes made (ie i did not delete any users etc.).
I performed the upgrade to 10.5.7 on Monday 11th May and since then the screen resolution has not been the same. i have tried all options with overscan, no overscan etc. and the quality is dire on the only usable option which (for me) is 1280x720 with no overscan (and 50Hz too).
The picture quality (does this mean the driver? presume so?) is awful. I also noticed that my Sony 32" TV now displays 1080p when the Mac Mini first boots and previously (with the earlier driver) it displayed 720p - so maybe the driver upgrade had added the 1080p option/capability, however my TV can't display 1080p as it is native 720 but it does downscale extremely well (normally) - and it does a good job of that with other attached devices so I know it's the Mac Mini at fault.
I've logged the problem with Apple but haven't connected with anyone who has a clue yet...
If I hear more I'll report it here.
Would love to go back to the old driver, this quality of the display output is now awful, truly awful. Wonder if there is a way to do that...
    Rob.

  • When i connect my macbook using the mini hdmi to my HD samsung tv, the response is always "mode not supported".  ideas?

I'm using the mini HDMI to connec to a Samsung HDTV.  The response is always "Mode Not Supported."  Anyone know what to do?  Trying to watch TV shows from iTunes on the TV.  Thanks, Hugh

    Hi Jake,
It's impossible to know without troubleshooting, but it sure sounds like a bad adapter or cable.

  • Why my Mac Mini cannot connect to my Samsung 32" HD LCD TV?

Hi guys, I just bought a mac mini and a Samsung 32" HD LCD TV. I was trying to connect the mac mini to the TV by HDMI cable,I and set the PC as the source of the TV. but the TV cannot find signal at all. I tried both HDMI ports on the TV, the results were same. Please help me about this problem. Thanks a lot.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Please tell us about your LCD TV. What model is it? What year was it made?
The reason that I ask is because Samsung says that their TVs made before 2007 have a DVI/HDMI port that does not support computer connections.

  • Scrolling desktop images DVI to yellow RCA video on my Sony 40" Bravia

I attached a "DVI to video adapter (M9267)" to my MacBook Pro 2,1 (late 2006).  The desktop scrolls downward in endless stream on my 40" Sony Bravia.  How do I stop the scrolling?

It will never work through simple cable adapters because the yellow connector out of your Playstation carries YUV, which is chrominance information mixed in with a baseband. Your monitor cannot decode such a signal.
Even if you somehow found cable adapters that would facillitate a physical connection, the monitor would not respond to composite video. Sorry for the bad news. There may be more expensive boxes with active electronics inside them that would do all the conversion. But that doesn't sound like what you are looking for.

  • Mini screen resolutions on a Samsung 32" LCD?

Can anyone tell me what screen resolutions (pixel width x pixel height) would be available to a Mac Mini connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 320P 32" LCD?
A listing of the monitor, which includes "native" and "supported" resolutions, is available here...
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=6559&A=details&Q=&sku=415646&i s=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation
... but I haven't found any documentation online about what a Mac Mini, specifically, can push on such a monitor.
Thanks for any info you can provide!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Samsung 32" display

Thes best I can tell you is that on my monitor and based on what some others have posted with their flat screens you should have the full range of resolutions available to you with VGA. The HDMI may or may not give you all of the same choices. (as on mine where the highest resolution is only available with overscan) When i first set up my system it automatically went to 1600x900. I do not recall if it was different when hooked up to VGA, it was too long ago.
There are a number of threads on here with different people using different size and model flat screens, with various successes and failures. Should you run into a problem when you do get to hook up the system (hopefully you won't!) it would be worth checking out those threads as well. Maybe even do a little reconnaissance and bookmark a few of the threads after doing a search so you don't have to do it last minute. I know, the threads are too numerous to count but sometimes a little advance research can go a long way when you are pressed for time.
Good luck, let us know how you make out.

  • Mac mini bought January 2013 with Samsung 712N S monitor

    Hello,
I bought a Mac Mini in January 2013 and I am trying to make it work with my old Samsung monitor 712N S, I bought also the minidisplay port to vga adapter.
The problem is that the monitor won´t work, just black, no sign of connection.  I checked the mac mini with my tv through hdmi and works perfect.
Any idea how can I make it work?
    Thanks a lot.

Check the monitor with another video source. Be sure it's working. If it is working, then you've isolated the problem to either the cable or VGA adapter, or the Mini itself.

  • Mac mini late 2012, hdmi to Samsung Monitor no signal

mac mini late 2012, OS X ver. 10.9.2, hdmi to Samsung Monitor (S22C300) no signal,
but thunderbolt to hdmi adaptor can work, any fix for hdmi issue?

It would seem that if the Samsung monitor is not waking from sleep, then Samsung has not properly implemented the Wake on Signal that the Mini is sending out. There is nothing unique that Apple would do for one manufacturer. The signal is being sent out and that is why other monitors wake. Your Samsung, and mine, which are both probably different models are not waking when requested by the Mini. The best that can be done is to set the Energy Saving System Preference to not put the monitor to sleep. Use the Screen Saver as desired.

  • Sign-In Problem with Sony Reader app on Samsung Tablet

Was using the Sony Reader app on a Samsung tablet, then signed out.  Because of doing that could not access books anymore.
Attempted to sign in and it didn't recognize my sign-in (Sony Reader Store continues to).
Got an Adobe Sign-in screen and it doesn't recognize my sign-in so used their link to reset my password, which I did.
Reader app on tablet doesn't recognize new or old password.  What do I have to do to be able to read books again?

  • Mini no longer displays with Samsung monitor

Have a Mac Mini from late 2009 and since I bought it, had been using a Samsung Syncmaster 216BW with no problems at all until recently. last I remeber that changed was a software update last month. Of course I just click "yes" without paying attention to what it's updating. Next time i rebooted, the monitor no longer works. On boot-up, it shows a gray screen with the swirling cursor and Apple logo, then goes black. Every now & then it would flash the desktop, but not long enough to amke and display configurations. Flash, black, flash, black, then displays "Analog", then "Digital", then back to flashing & blackness. Lately, I don't even get the flashing.
The monitor is OK as I'm now using it hooked up to my old Windows laptop. The Mini is OK as I can hook it up to my HDTV.
I had a few suggestions from "JustAnswer", but none worked.
Anyone know what this monitor needs to be configured?
    Thanks

I have a very similar problem with an LG W2252s monitor it worked fine at a higher resolution for over 1 year even running 10.6.3 Snow Leopard then after an apple update 4 months ago - no monitor after login, just a blank screen and a microsecond of my display flashing up at random intervals. My first fix was to spend the 45 minuted re-installing my Mac OS X from the Disc, this worked then just today my Mac updated despite me clicking on the install do not install update now button and bang - there goes my monitor - again. I've reinstalled once to now avail and I'm in the process of reinstalling a secon time today.
Does anyone have a reason as to why updates stop certain monitors from working, and is there a quicker solution for the software other than viewing my screen at a lower Res. (and i don't knoww if that even works!)
    All responses are greatly appreciated,
    Regards,
    Neil.

  • Sony MDR-1RBT with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2?

I've successfully paired my new Sony MDR-1RBT Bluetooth headphones with my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone.  However, I can't get them to pair with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet.  Are they compatible?
I held the button for 7 seconds until I heard the sound and the red/blue lights flashed.  The Galaxy Tab was discoverable but never found the headphones.  I tried restarting the tablet, restarting the headphones, etc.
Any suggestions would be appreciated - these headphones were too expensive to not work with all my devices.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I figured this out today - I realized I had to hold the power button long enough to see a red flash and then keep holding until I hear a second tone and a red/blue flashing.  The unit paired right away when I did this.  Thanks!
