Mini switches off during boot process

Hi, My 1st gen Mac mini has come up with a new problem. After switching on the Apple logo appears, then the cartwheel. After approx 15 seconds the Mini powers itself down. I can switch back on immediately and the process repeats. Any suggestions for fix. Thanks

A problematic fan would certainly be likely to cause a similar problem since the system goes into protective shutdown to prevent damage from overheating, but in this instance the shutdowns appear rather too rapid to be fan related, particularly if the system is cold before startup. That's one of the easiest ways to test for a fan problem - if the system runs longer (ie, some minutes) from starting when cold and only a few seconds or a minute or two when starting from warm, the fan would be a prime suspect. If behavior is broadly the same whether cold or warm (as appears to be in this case), then the fan is rather less likely.
Good thinking to raise the issue though - it's often overlooked as a cause of apparently random shutdowns.

  • Mac Mini Shutting off during boot

    Hello Everyone - hope I can get some help on this..
    I've got an Intel-based Mac Mini, which suddenly (after changing the video resolution - at least that's the last thing I did before this changed), boots to the Apple logo, with the spinning logo underneath.. This then spins for about 30 seconds (normal time), and then the Mac Mini shuts off..
    I've reset the SMC and PMU, but no joy..
    Help!
    Thanks in advance!

    Did a full reinstall of Leopard - that seems to have fixed the issue.. A smidge draconian, but effective nonetheless...

  • Aspire One D255 monitor shuts off during boot

    Every time I boot, immediately after the kernel lauches init, my screen powers off.  About 15 seconds later, it comes back on.
    The delay before coming back on seems to be independent of the init process.  If I speed init up, by the time it comes back on it's waiting at the login prompt.  If I slow it down, it comes back on while init is still running.
    I tried adding an echo -e -n '\033[13]' to my init scripts in an effort to unblank the display, but it doesn't help.
    This happens both booting of the install image and after installation. It makes it extremely hard to figure out what's going on during startup.
    Has anyone seen this before?

    I have a similar issue with my aspire one, but the display is not turning off, it is actually the backlight turning off during boot. I use fbsplash with a dark theme but a bright progress bar. During boot, it appears as if the screen has turned off, but looking closely, I can still see the progress bar.
    I have tried several different methods of keeping the backlight on to no avail.
    Personally I am thinking it is monitor signal detection during a monitor mode reset during boot, ie from console resolution switching to KMS resolution. Most monitors lose signal detection when changing mode (in my experience). Some display a "No Signal" message of some sort, some briefly turn off until signal is detected again, and in the Aspire One case, the backlight turns off. Put it down to monitor manufacturers built in power saving "features".
    Tha same thing happens when I boot windows.
    Of course, if anyone does come up with a solution, I am eagerly listening!
    Cheers.

  • Mac Mini keeps hanging during boot

    My ~3 year old Mac Mini keeps freezing during booting with the error message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button...". This happens every time. Booting in safe mode works.
    This happened with Mac OS X Tiger but keeps happening even after I have completely reformatted that hard disk and reinstalled Leopard from scratch. There are no external devices connected to the computer besides the monitor and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
    After reading some discussion forums I have already tried starting into Open Bootware and running "reset-nvram" and "reset-all" but to no avail.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    What you are suffering is a Kernel Panic, and given you have reformatted your drive and reinstalled MacOS, it would tend to suggest the issue is hardware related - most common culprit being RAM.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227 explains what kernel panics are, and http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html and http://www.index-site.com/kernelpanic.html may give some assistance in working through the problem to determine the cause.
    The one good thing is that your system appears sufficiently stable to allow you to boot to the Leopard installer and complete a full install. This makes it less likely there is a fundamental issue with the most expensive component of the system, the logic board.

  • [SOLVED] USB Harddrive via fstab turned off during Boot - Error

    Hello^^
    I'm trying to mount my external USB Drive.
    I put the following line in fstab:
    /dev/sdb1 /media/Musik ext4 noauto,user,default 0 1
    I only want to start the Harddive occasionally.
    The problem is, when the drive is completly turned off during boot I get the following error:
    No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdb1
    Possibly non existend device?
    I thought that the noauto Option should prevent fstab from mounting the hdd???
    regards

    PS: Manual mounting works without any problems...

    Let me give you a hand then. The following I have in my /etc/udev/rules.d/11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rules, and what it does is:
    -- pick the name of a drive,
    -- create a dedicated /media/mountpoint name (certainly, "mountpoint" is replaced by the name of your drive),
    -- mount the drive on boot,
    -- unmount the drive on shutdown and delete the /media/mountpoint.
    KERNEL!="sd[a-z][0-9]", GOTO="media_by_label_auto_mount_end"
    # Import FS infos
    IMPORT{program}="/sbin/blkid -o udev -p %N"
    # Get a label if present, otherwise specify one
    ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}!="", ENV{dir_name}="%E{ID_FS_LABEL}"
    ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}=="", ENV{dir_name}="usbhd-%k"
    # Global mount options
    ACTION=="add", ENV{mount_options}="relatime"
    # Filesystem-specific mount options
    ACTION=="add", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="vfat|ntfs", ENV{mount_options}="$env{mount_options},utf8,gid=100,umask=002"
    # Mount the device
    ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/mkdir -p /media/%E{dir_name}", RUN+="/bin/mount -o $env{mount_options} /dev/%k /media/%E{dir_name}"
    # Clean up after removal
    ACTION=="remove", ENV{dir_name}!="", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /media/%E{dir_name}", RUN+="/bin/rmdir /media/%E{dir_name}"
    # Exit
    LABEL="media_by_label_auto_mount_end"
    Plenty of handy examples you can find in /lib/udev/rules.d/ and modify them so they meet you needs. I hope it clarifies the matter a bit.

  • Mike and/or speaker kept switching off during phone calls

    I just returned my 4s after less than 24 hours and have gone back to my 3 because teh mike and/or speaker kept switching off during calls using the handset, the apple headset and my blueant bluetooth, they could not replace it today so I returned it and may repurchase at a latter date if this is not at common problem... has anyone else had this problem?

    KBurd,
    If the proximity sensor is covered by a case, your hand, or by being close to your face, the screen should go dark and unresponsive, but the call should not be disconnected.
    Is there anything covering the proximity sensor? It is located between the earpiece and the top edge.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Iphone 4 switchs off during call

    i am having this problem since 2 month earlier when the batt level would drop to 50 the  iphone used to get switched off during call.. i upgraded the phone to ios5.1 after that two monthsf it was fine but past three days it gets swicthed off during call as well as while surfing . even when the battery level is 100 % dont why this is happening???

    First, try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data, but it can clear some glitches after installing new software or apps.
    If this does not help, set it up as new device, if necessary without using the latest backup, in case it contains corrupt files which are causing your problem.

  • My external hard drive accidentally switched off during Disk Utility's "erase free space" process.  I restarted the external hard drive and Disk Utility, but now I get the "couldn't mount disk" error when trying to finish the erase.  Please help!

    My external Lacie Quadra hard drive accidentally switched off in the middle of "erase free space", and when I switched it back on Disk Utility was hanging.  So I Force Quit Disk Utility and restarted it.  Now when I try to erase I get
    "Secure Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t unmount disk."
    But "erase free space" seems to work...
    What can I do?  I'm erasing as I'm giving the drive to someone else and I wanted to wipe it clean.
    Also should I use "erase" or "erase free space" if I want to wipe the drive clean?
    Please help!

    Sorry I don't really understand.... there are no partitions on the drive.  How do I repartition it?
    And should I use "erasing free space" or "erase" for wiping clean my drive of everything?  Erase seems to be faster last tiem I tried.

  • RV180 (wired only) problems with firmware 1.0.4.14, fails to boot correctly + LAN ports power off during boot (downgrading to 1.0.3.10 = fine again).

    Hi All,
    A few months ago when 1.0.4.14 was released I was quick to update to this version from 1.0.3.10 but very quickly ran into issues.
    Bit of background info...  I am not doing anything complex with this box, basic IP4 network over all LAN ports, no VLANs, firewall enabled and allowing 2 port access rules to a static IP address.  Any static IPs are assigned manual at host level but all other devices receive DHCP IP addresses.  I don’t host VPN on this RV180 but I do with another.  Routing VPN has no issues. WAN is connected to another switch provided by my ISP who provides DHCP IP Address with their DNS etc.  Only LAN ports 1 and 2 are connected, port 1 to my Wireless AP (AP mode passing all requests to the RV180, DHCP etc.), port 2 connects to a 8 port Smart Switch (but all 'Smart' features are currently not in use, so basic switching only).  All other settings on the RV180 are on recommended defaults.
    Everything is working fine on 1.0.3.10 but I have all kinds of issues after updating to 1.0.4.14.  Here are the actions and experiences I had...
    1) Backup my RV180 config to txt file.
    2) Navigate to the firmware upgrade page and follow steps to complete the upgrade process from 1.0.3.10 to 1.0.4.14.  *router does the normal process of upgrading*
    3) RV180 reboots to complete but doesn’t come back up even after waiting 5-10 mins.   LAN ports enable during boot up (link lights on) but after about 2mins turn off (no link lights).  WAN light is on alongside the Power Light.
    4) Power cycle even with rest... Same results.
    5) Reset the RV180 to default settings.  I can sometimes get the unit to boot up and the LAN remains active and powered up.  The web UI is VERY slow compared with 1.0.3.10.  Internet sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (I would expect it all work without issue on default settings).
    6) I repeat this a few times, various resets, powered off waiting periods, etc. but I always have issues.  I did manage to get some log file information and the Kernel appears in the Alert, Error and also the Warning logs (please see attached files).
    7) I gave up at this point.  No major issues like this reported on the internet from a few google searches etc.  So I then reset to defaults (1.0.4.14), downgrade to 1.0.3.10 and finally reset to defaults again + restore backup config settings (with some manual changes).
    The router has remained like this and seem to be working fine, but I would like any security improvements from 1.0.4.14 firmware on my device.
    Anyone able to help, have the same issue or can advise me in any other ways?
    I see 1.0.3.10 isn’t displayed as a firmware download on the standard support page for the RV180 now.  Only 1.0.2.6 and 1.0.4.14.  Do I need to downgrade again to 1.0.2.6 before upgrading to the latest version?
    Regards,
    ~FAZ~

    Hi,
    I recently bought a RV180 router and immediately I encountered the same problem; practically I am not able to access the web GUI.
    The PC is directly connected to the router, nothing else is connected; the TCP/IP configuration is as follows:
    PC: 192.168.1.100
    RV180: 192.168.1.1
    GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
    SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
    Once the router is turned on, the power LED flashes fastly, the Ethernet LED is on but after few minutes it disappears and the PC detects a disconnection of the Ethernet cable.
    The router is not pingable and, as I said, the web interface is not reachable.
    I have tried to power cycle the router, to reset it (pressing the reset button for more than 3 second and for more than one minute), to access the rescue mode and download a new firmware through TFTP, but nothing worked.
    Few times, after many boot and reset trials,I was able to access the web interface and in one of these occasions I updated the firmware to 1.0.4.14 but once the router is powered off the problem arises again at the next power on.
    I have not tried yet to downgrade to an older firmware version.
    Can you suggest any solution? thank you.

  • IMac turning on and switching off during start-up after partitioning

    Hi,
    I tried installing Windows XP using Boot Camp on my iMac. During the partitioning process I got the spinning beach ball and the computer switched off.
    After which, I tried powering on the iMac again and the apple logo is displayed for about half a minute and then the computer restarts. This is happening constantly!! I have tried resetting the SMC by unplugging the mains and the keyboard and mouse, but the same thing keeps happening.
    What can be the problem?

    Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Cisco Aironet 1262N stuck during boot process

    I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why my AIR-AP1262N-A-K9 will not boot all the way. It will get all the way to initiating the interfaces and stop. This unit from what I understand will work all on its own with no controller. Hence it is called a "standalone" model. Yet it seems to be looking for something to finish during the boot. Below is the out put during boot. The last line is where it stops.

  • Scanner "switched off" crashes boot post performance update

    Reference: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2199212
    Yesterday I installed the update "Performance Update 1.0 (Snow Leopard)" and got the grey screen of death on reboot (see reference above). Long story made short, I managed a safe mode reboot and after several trial and error attempts I finally understood that if I connect the scanner, switched OFF, through the (unpowered) USB hub, the system won't boot. OTOH, with the scanner switched ON (again through the unpowered USB hub) the system does boot.
    Tonight I will
    a) do a Time Machine, just to be on the safe side
    b) check whether there are differences if I plug the scanner directly in the Mini (my guess would be NO)
    c) check whether the scanner actually scans
    d) try and install the newest Epson drivers (the scanner is a V350) to see if they fix the problem
    But let me say that a peripheral should NOT be allowed to grey-crash the system on boot! Rather, the system should auto-reboot in Safe Mode and warn me about the anomaly so I can take corrective action. A post-update crash like this is something out of a Microsoft nightmare, and I think it should be fixed.
    By the way, I had no trouble at all before the update, even with 10.6.1
    Regards and thanks in advance for any advice you may have to offer.

    You might go to the scanner mfg's website and see if there is an updated driver for it. Do you have an external drive that you could use in the future to make a bootable clone of your internal on? Having a clone is a great benefit. For example, in this case, you could just clone back to your internal--in effect, uninsatalling the performance update--assuming, of course, you didn't update your clone for a while after the update--which would be a best practice.
