Mini to Analog TV...

Which apple adapter would one need to connect the new early 2009 Mac Mini to a TV using RCA video cable?
I have a Mini DVI to Video adaptor but that does not work.
Appreciate any info.

Based upon the discussion in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1926928
I doubt that setup is going to work. A standard definition TV is a poor computer monitor anyway, since (as I noted in that thread) the effective resolution is 640x480. I suspect the problem with using the setup may be a lack of scan conversion, since a simple conductor swap or merge will not compensate properly for the fact that the TV uses an interlaced scan and computers use progressive scan.

  • New Mac Mini and Analog TV

I just bought a new March 2009 Mac Mini. I am trying to hook it up to and old analog TV. The TV has SVIDEO and RCA jacks. I purchased the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter only to find out it will not work with the new model. It seems the new model only outputs DVI-D and not DVI-I.
I am trying to hook up the mini-dvi to SVIDEO on the back of my TV and then for the audio connect them to the TV with RCA jacks. Is there any way to get the new mac mini to work with an analog TV?
    Thanks

When you cite "VGA converter to RCA" do you mean a little box that actually converts the signal down to RCA/composite, like this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2
or simply an adaptor like this one:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040113&pid=2509&seq=1&format=2
The crucial thing I'm waiting to find out is whether the new Minis provide ANY analog video signal to either of the video ports at all (which would seem to be the case, since VGA is analog, right?), or if the analog roadblock is simply caused by the currently available adaptors.

  • Mini digital/analog audio output

I'm using my Mini for itunes music (AIFF) with my home entertainment system. It's pretty high end and I want my receiver to handle the DAC. Is the HDMI output from the Mini digital? Can I make the output digital?
Should I consider going out the USB to a DAC and then to receiver?
    Thanks

Should be HDMI. It's got the highest bandwidth -- it can basically pipe 8 digital audio channels uncompressed -- and you can rely on the DAC in your receiver or pre-amp to do the work. If your setup is good, the DAC in your receiver / pre-amp should also be good.
Others may be able to speak to the USB > DAC question. I'm not an terribly well informed, but USB has got lower bandwidth than HDMI, and is not really tuned for A/V delivery. That said, I've read some good reviews of USB > S-PDIF / Analog Stereo DACs.
Finally, I think that S/PDIF is going to be pretty heavily compressed for anything above simple stereo, so if you're interested in high performance 5:1 or better, it's probably not ideal.

  • Stealth Mini G4 Analog Video Problem

Anyone know how I could go about fault finding - I've got a `G4 stealth (1.5) mini and the 64MB video gives me a series of little moving wave effects on the screen. Its fine if I use DVI input - and I've seen it on another with this same screen - any ideas?
Is it the mini, the TFT or cable, or combination?
    Much obliged.

    Sorry guys.

  • Sgi sw 1600 works with mini in analog mode

I replaced an old Pismo with a Mini and hooked it up to my wife's sw 1600. Not very good. It did not produce the sw's native resolution with 60 hz and the largest she could get was terrible in all ways. By chance, I just stumbled over the solution:
Today, as it happens every few weeks, the sw went blank (or black, rather). I did a first factory reset (keep the down button on the multilink depressed while un- and then replugging the power on the multi link). No reaction (it usually onlky takes a few seconds) another one... I finally waited out the third and after about 30 seconds, there it was: The sw's native 1600x1024 resolution.
While opening the diplays preferences, as I did later, I realised that the window showing up was entitled sgi multi link and contained all resolutions at 60 hz, including the native one.
Basically, and this may apply to other displays, even in digital mode: Go back to your display's manual and set the computer and display up as described there. The display should then force the mini to show the monitors rather than its own resolutions.
I did not post this in the "running tally" post because that one is limited to digital monitors.

I think the sample processing is not the problem, because even though I have three loops, each performs a simple task: the first read one channel and evaluate when the test is over, the second read the other channels and put in a queue, and the last loop provides this queue in shared variable, to be saved. I may try to put it together in a loop or two. When you say to configure the scan engine you refer to the attached image? And for the choice of timed-loop timing options? Where do I configure this? Unfortunately I don't have the codes now ... Thank you for your answer!

  • Analog video editing?

I am looking into buying a Mac mini for analog video editing (S-Video and VHS). From the looks of it, the Mac mini does not have an S-Video port, but is there any adapter out there that has one? I don't want to spend more than $800 on each machine (including the adapter).
    Thanks.

    Austin,
You can either use a Mini-DV camera that has analog passthrough on it to get the video into your Mac(through a firewire cable), or you can get a video capture box like Canopus.

  • DVI to video adapter - specs

Hi. I'm interested in hooking up my Mini to a plain ol' analog JVC TV. I bought this adapter:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M92 67G/A
A cookie goes to the person who can answer this for me: does the Apple video adapter use the Mini's analog DVI output, or the digital DVI output? (The reason is long and complicated.)

    Hi Elgrego,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Is this a test? The way you phrased this post seems like you know the answer, but want to see if anyone else does.
I believe the DVI output on the Mac Mini is a DVI-I, so it can connect to both in the same port. I believe since your TV is analog, it would use analog. I don't know that much about displays.

Can I ask, is this another bug based on Mountain Lion, or does both computers have to now have Mountain Lion?
My mother's comuter has Leopard, she tells me.
    Thanks in advance

Oh, I don't doubt it was something very specifically screwy on that Mac mini that somehow got exacerbated by Mountain Lion. My original install of Lion on that mini a year ago hung at the end. I had to do a clean install of Snow Leopard and then upgraded over that. It was then I discovered Lion 10.7.0 had a bug that disabled the Mac mini's analog out ability until restart if a digital signal was sent at all. This killed my Mac mini as a HTPC and led to it's transition to a headless server instead.
What was great about that bug was it apparently also affected some 10.6.8 users (I wasn't affected). A "10.6.8 Supplemental Update" was released to fix that issue a few days later. I filed a bug with Apple for 10.7, it was marked as a "known issue" and remained unfixed until 10.7.1 came out almost a month later.
The Mac mini worked for another few months until 10.7.2 came out in October. That upgrade also hung, and another full reinstall of Lion was needed. It's worked fine since then, with the exception of iCal, iCloud, QuickTime, iPhoto, and iTunes bugs that have been present on all my Macs and confirmed as "known issues" with Apple. And now with 10.8.0, the Mac mini has broken again.
In general, since Lion came out and iCloud has come online, I've had more problems with my Apple products than I can ever remember. They've all gone from being rock stable to buggy peices of junk. If this issue with Mountain Lion is the start of a similar trend for 10.8 and iOS 6, I may have to think about transitioning to another platform. It's gotten to be just as time intesive to keep everything working right as on Windows!

  • Am I the oddball Mac Pro buyer?

I ordered a Mac Pro not for professional applications not for video editing but for games.
I love gaming on a mac. I think its fun to head to a lan party and bring along my mac. Right now I have a MacBook Pro I got in Feb (replaced my PowerBook G4)
What's fun for me is all my friends and a lot of their friends play WoW. So we try once a month to all get together at one of our places and do a big event of some kind, finishing some big quest or some pvp event or something. The looks I always get when I pull out my MacBook Pro are just great. Most of the people there have laptops with the intel integrated graphics or the ati x200 intergrated. They start off with "Macs suck at gaming" then they come by and look at WoW running silky smooth at 1440x 900 their jaws just drop.
Now when my Mac Pro gets here (delayed by ordering the X1900XT) and we do some at my house they are gonna really go wild on how some of these games look and play. I ordered it with the 2.66GHz CPUs, a 500Gb hard drive, 2Gb of RAM, the X1900XT and the 20" Cinema Display. Our other games we play a bit will be nice too. Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 4, a few others.
Yes I think I probably am the odd-ball Mac Pro buyer. I like Mac Gaming.

The only area where PC's still win though is video and sound card options
PC's still do have the video advantage because of the lack of SLI or Crossfire support on the MacTels, but that's a Xeon processor limitation.
Mac's pass through 5.1 surround sound through the digital optical port to a surround sound reciever capable of decoding the formats. It's a MUCH superior method than the crappie analog outputs done by sound cards which actually use the processors to decode.
However if one has one of those cheap "5.1 computer speaker" that's commonly seen on PC's, M-Audio has a decoder PCI card, but I don't think there's a PCI-Express option quite yet.
Mac's audio is clearly superior, provided the optical port is used to a quality receiver and speakers. Like a home theater system like mine.
Analog, even from a iPod, just plain s*cks in comparison.
Since one can get a 5.1 Harmon Kardon reciever for about $600 online, with their matching HKS-14's for a total of 800 watts for another $400. Getting quality sound for only a few hundred dollars more than a "5.1 computer speaker" and a sound card combination is a worthwhile option, since one can hook just about anything else to the reciver. FM/AM, DVD, Coax, TV, etc. etc. Plus it lasts considerably longer, 10-15 years with proper care.
Also when one upgrades a computer, it's a simple matter to hook up the digital optical to the new machine.
With sound cards there is usually a internal upgrade that will make the cards obsolete, requiring a new purchase. Plus the cheap computer speakers blow out fast.
So it might cost less, but the turnover rate is higher so one is paying more in the long run. But that's the life of PC's.

  • 5.1 sound.

Ok so i have an older version of these cyber acoustics speakers http://www.cyberacoustics.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Home.ProductDetail&content_id =468
They are pretty much identical to mine, they just have a new cosmetic design. I want to know how i can hook these up and get full 5.1 sound with a brand new mac mini, if i even can. They have the three minijacks - black, green, and orange, that currently plug into my 5.1 soundcard in my dell windows computer. I was thinking maybe an external sound card or something, but im not too sure.
    Thanks guys.

    Yeah,
This topic came up here a couple of months ago, with another analog 5.1 system with he three 3.5mm jacks in to sound cards with those jacks.
Previously I mentioned to someone the external USB soundcard route, and they did find a generic or Creative that did work for their Mini and analog 5.1 system.
But, that Griffin Firewave is the more elegant solution, in that it actually has a Dolby decoder and Prologic II. And the Firewave is cheap, too, when you find them.
    So, what does that mean?
What it means is that you would hear the true Dolby 5.1 sound effects when you played most DVDs on your Mini.
What that would also means is that when you played 2-channel music from iTunes, that it would be able to be processed into a 5.1 distribution via ProLogicII, which is better than the initial ProLogic, or other analog mixing schemes inherent in you speaker system or via drivers, etc.
So, the Firewave is the only external "dongle-style" unit that I know of which will give you the connectivity you want and also transform you 5.1 Analog system into a 5.1 Digital system.
Of course, your speaker system is very low powered, and you're probably going to use it on your desktop, but the Firewave will get more out of your system than a USB solution.
    Peace to you,

  • SpreadSheets, Linked Frames & multiple frames

    Yvan Koenig
    Wrote
"You must select the frame as a block (with displaid handles) to be able to use the "Edit > Frame Info…" menu item
Assuming that a frame is named "frame_1", the main sheet may grab data from it with a formula like:
    =[frame_1]!B3"
This worked ok till I changed data in the original document that had a few frames attached? in these frames there was formulas that related to the original & then back to the original.( sounds confusing)
ie. original doc was called "TestFrames"
in "Frame 1" it has a formula in cell A5 "=TestFrames.cwk!A1"
In "TestFrames" it has a formula in cell B6 "=[Frame 1]!A5"
When I change the info in "TestFrames A1" it seems to crash AW's
I don't supose I would do this in a real senario but was experimenting to learn how this new info can help me.

    Hi Barry
    BF's techinique isn't limited to 20 columns x 50 rows
Ahah I just found by inserting cells it expands the size of the Frame. Thanks for that that is very helpful.
His example is of a 9 column x 10 row spreadsheet,
consisting of a 'title row' in which the three column
titles are repeated three times, plus three 3 column
    x 3 row mini-spreadsheets analogous to sheet 1, sheet
2, and sheet 3 in an Excel SS document.
This is were I get confused, are the column titles just like Date, Name etc. or can I rename A to AA or something that dosn't allready exist.
Placing the three sub-sheets along a diagonal means
that (other than the title row), no row or column is
shared by more than one of the sub-sheets, thus
allowing flexibility in adjusting the width and
height of the columns and rows in each sub-sheet
    without affecting the others.
Sorry for the ignorance but I don't understand this either.
Incidently, the 'empty' cells (those that don't
contain Ts, As, Bs or Cs in the example) are not
displayed, but can be used for interim calculations.
    Or this?
    BTW
I have never used ms exel for more than 5 minutes, so am not familar with Multiple Spreadsheets.
Can a frame be linked to another across Ie.
    Frame 1 from A to F
    Frame 2 from G to Z
    etc.??
As in the past I sometimes take a little time to get some of these things but often use the info often in future SS's

  • Weird capturing issue

    hi all,
i have successfully captured video from my VCR using my Sony DCH30 digital camcorder as an av to dv converter, a few days ago.
Now when I try to capture from my VCR in the same way, as long as the usb end of the same firewire cable is not connected to my mac mini, the analog video 'comes through' to my digital camcorder as I can see the video playing in the fold-out screen ..... but as soon as I connect the usb end to my mac mini to capture in imovie6, the fold-out screen goes blank and in effect I can't capture the video either, as apparently it's not through putting.
This is really puzzling as every component of this setup is exactly as it was a few days ago. The firewire cable is fine because I can capture digital video directly from my camcorder. It can't be any setting on my camcorder (?) - if it is, I just can't remember making any special settings for this and again why is it that I can capture directly my digital video.
Can the av in cable (supplied with my camcorder) between my camcorder and the VCR be damaged, without having touched it?!
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

DV/D8 camcorders do send the date/time info to iMovie but it is embedded in the DV data. You can access it by double-clicking the clips.
    Some operations lose that info:
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#expertsettings
I prefer to hide that info and only add a short 2 second title about it at the beginning at each day's footage.
If you insist, the easiest way to always show it (ugh) is to display it on the camcorder screen and feed it via an analog-dv link to iMovie.

  • Wrong 5.1 speaker mapping with X-fi on Win7 x64

    /Wrong 5. speaker mapping with X-fi on Win7 x64?Hi,
I got the X-fi Platinum connected to my Onkyo SR605 receiver. Digital (spdif) connection works fine, but the analogue 5. setup not.
When I test the speakers in the Console, I only get sound from the front speakers (LF, C, RF), and no sound from the 2 back speakers (LR, RR). (I got no sub connected).
However, when I select 7. speaker setup instead of 5. in the console, the left and right side speakers which are added give sound when click the icon for testing. Now this sound comes from the back speakers (LR, RR)!
I want this sound coming from the rear speakers with the 5. setup selected, and not with 7..
It looks like somehow the software is outputting the wrong channels...
All cables are connected the right way, and I don't want to change the speaker connections on my receiver (which supports 7.). That would mess up the spdif DTS bitstream out, which is working fine. The problem is in the x-fi configuration.
Is it somehow possible to "re-map" the speakers in the software, so that I can just setup the x-fi as 5. WITH sound from my rear speakers?
I got the latest Creative drivers installed, on a Windows 7 x64 system.

When setting up the speakers in Media Center, here's all it asks, step by step:
Select number of speakers (radio button choice of 2 speakers, 5. speakers [which I have selected], and 7. speakers)
    Hit next
What type of cable connects PC to speakers/receiver? Single mini-plug [analog](which is what I have selected, since I'm connected through a green, black, and orange miniplug [6 channel direct]), dual RCA [analog], single RCA [digital], Toslink [digital], or Built-in [laptop]
    Hit next
Audio test. It plays 6 tones, they're supposed to hop from speaker to speaker and finally to subwoofer. Only the front center, front left, and rear right play any kind of sound during the Media Center Audio Test. Front Right and Rear Left get nothing at all.
Ok, I tried messing with other settings. I noticed in the THX setup console, I have it plugged in exactly as illustrated (orange plug in port closest to AD_LINK, black in the middle, green on the end), and had it plugged in the same way on my Z-5500 receiver (color coded). I unplugged every speaker except the Center speaker, and I clicked the center speaker in the illustration, and didn't get a sound. When I clicked Front left, the Front Left voice came out of the center speaker, being the only speaker that's plugged in.
What do I have to do to make it designate the correct speakers to the correct locatons?
Is there some kind of codec I'm supposed to be using in order for 5. to work correctly? Because at the moment I only have the center speaker plugged in to the subwoofer's center speaker connector, and the orange minijack from the orange receiver port to the correct port on the X-Fi as illustrated in the THX Setup Console, and it's only playing Front Left's sound. Is there a codec I'm supposed to be using, and if so, where do I get it'sMessage Edited by Guanthwei on 0-29-2006 02:3 PM

what components do i need to use this feature, a wireless reciever or what?
i don't know much about this, so any help would be great! thanks =]

To be able to stream iTunes from your Mac or PC, wirelessly, you will need at least two things:
o AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o Powered-speakers or an audio receiver. Either device would have to be able to accept either analog or digital-optical audio input from the AX. Typical connections types would be RCA / mini-jack (analog) or TOSLINK (digital).
