Mini vMac on PC

Trying to run some old Mac programs on PC using MinivMac. Have installed MinivMac itself and System 6.0.8. Now I need to install programs such a Word 5, BASIC etc. and related files. How to do this? This is not possible by simple drag/drop! All necessary steps I can prepare on Plus, SE30 or iMac.
Any practical sugestion, please!!

  • Trials w/ Mini Vmac emulating Mac Plus to play Sid Meier's Pirates

I was up for swashbuckling on the high seas & bought the classic game, Pirates, from Ebay. Using Mini Vmac, I've got the emulator running & then did a crash & burn when getting Pirates to start. The Mini Vmac site seems spotty regarding directions for adding software, like games to the Mac Plus desk top emulation. I may need to make the game into a ROM file for the Mac Plus to see Pirates, but don't know how.
I tried opening original apple software Disk Copy 4.2 to make a disk image for the emulator but the vmac didn't recognize the file and wanted to initialize it, maybe because Disk Copy 4.2.sea had an extension that Stuffit expander 11 didn't convert to a usable file b/4 making the disk image. SetFType.dimg couldn't make a mountable file either.
Glad to have the mini vmac emulator working, but I'm not on the high seas yet, any suggestions?

  • Hard time for selecting Startup Disk (partition) in Mac Classic II.

Dear coleagues, I'd like your help to understand and solve a tricky trouble. I'm sorry for the long text, but the issue is probably living in a small detail.
The issue regards a Mac Classic II with internal and external HDDs. Internal HDD has two partitions, a smaller with System 7.1 (first) and a larger with System 7.5.3 (second). This one is installed there since 5 years ago, working fine.
The (just installed) external HDD has 6 partitions (because of its size 9 Gb). It has been formated runing VCP in this Classic II itself and all partitions are initialized with HFS. It is intended to be a backup for my Classic II as well as my Mac Plus. I've started Installing System 7.5.3 in its third partition. Other partitions remain still empty.
Using only internal HDD I can already perceive that "Startup Disk" control panel is unable to change the boot partition attribute between partitions in the same drive. When I open "Startup Disk" it usualy both partitions of internal HDD are highlighted. I can select a Zip Drive, for instance, and it will boot from Zip. But, when I switch it back to HDD, doesn't bother wich partition I select, it will always boot with the same partition (usually 7.5.3). Then, If i open Startup Disk CP again, both partitions are again highlighted.
To switch between partitions in the same drive, I use Lido 7.5.6 PMount and there I select the boot partition. Then every time I select my HDD, that'll be the default boot partition.
My conclusion is that in Mac Classic II the Startup Disk CP is unable to set a partition within a drive, it selects the drive only. The boot will obey the drive's partition table flag. That's why I can do it whith Lido, writing directly at HDD's flags.
Now, attaching the external HDD, I can see all its partitions in Startup Disk CP and then I select one of them (the 3rd, with 7.5.3). Before rebooting, I close and open again the Startup Disk CP, then I can see all its 6 partitions highlighted. Just like I've been doing with the internal HDD, probably the solution to set a specific boot partition would be through Lido 7.5.6 PMount again. But Lido is unable to handle this drive. It appears gray in the drives list.
What does it sound to you? What would you recommend to test? Is there an alternative for Startup Disk CP?
    Thank you.
    Regards, Ciro (Brazil)

    Dear Jan, good Evening.
    Thank you for your time.
In fact I can select a specific partition, but by closing and reopenning Startup Disk CP I realize that the selection has been attributed to the physical drive (all partitions highlighted).
I have tried Startup Disk CP in both System 7.1 and System 7.5.3. They do the same way.
Internal HDD has been formated, partitioned and initialized with Apple HD CS Setup.
This external HDD in a different way. Apple HD SC Setup hasn't been able to "see" it, probably because of its prior format system. Lido neither. That's why I went to VCP. Moreover, as it is too big for 68030, I had to format it attached to a Performa 6360. After formating, I've let VCP make set the partitions in HFS mode (partitions with 512, 1024 and 2032 Mb).
I've mounted VCP in Mini VMac to get some screenshots for you:
Bringing it back to Mac Classic II, it could be mounted with Lido, but System 7 has asked to initialize all partitions again. I've accepted, installed system 7 on it, and it didn't boot. Then I've repeated the partitioning and initializing procedures using Apple HD SC Setup (since now there's a Mac HDD with "small" logical drives). Nothing changed.
I'm following your tip about System Picker. I've downloaded the sit file and read about it. It seems to be able to overlay the problem. I'm gonna try it and report back here.
But I feel still uncomfortable not to be able to do things the regular way. As far as I know, the boot partition is an attribute of a drive partition in partition map, just like the "Active Partition" found in FAT systems. I should be able to write there as I can do with Lido in internal HDD.
    Thank you, Jan.
    Best regards,
    Ciro Bruno.

  • Macbook pro compatibility with old mac software!??

Hello! I just got my Macbook pro, and i wanted to know if there was any way to get my old games from my oldschool PowerMac from like 1994 to play on it......it says its not compatible...and that makes me sad..
    Thanks
    Dan

If your old games are OS 9 programs, then they will not run on the Intel Macs. There is an emulator called SheepShaver (www.macupdate.com) that will run OS 9. Then there's the Mini vMac that emulates an old Mac Plus.
If it's a PPC application and doesn't work then it simply isn't compatible with Rosetta.

  • How to convert old Macwrite files in 10.6.8

Years ago, users published suggestions on the Apple forums for converting MacWrite, MacWrite II and MacWrite Pro files to RTF or Word formats, but none of these suggestions seem to work anymore.  MacLinkPlus is no longer supported by its developer, and the latest version dropped support for early Mac programs anyway. Other solutions (early ClarisWorks, AppleWords, Word) only run in Classic so don't work on new Macs running 10.6
I have been able to open these files one at a time through a OS9 emulation program SheepSaver, running the original MacWrite software, but this is very slow and tedious.
Does anyone know of a program that will do this conversion in batch, a program which works in OS 10.6?  There must be thousands of people with old files who would want to update them.  I couldn't find anything in the AppStore or anywhere else.

It seems to me that you can access your files (under SheepShaver), but what you want is a batch conversion from MacWrite to something else. (This an instructive problem. Two decades ago, MacWrite was the de facto WP standard on the Mac, but nowadays we can't find a conversion utility for it. Look around in your Documents folder and ask yourself, how many of my important files will I be able to read twenty years from now.)
    I have two suggestions.
    (1) This is a bit ironic, but MacText, a rather pricy current Windoze app, claims to read and convert MacWrite files.
    (2) Or try a forum of users of 'classic' Macs (eg, Low End Macs). You could ask someone to send you an old copy of MacLink Plus, which you may be able to run under SheepShaver, or Basilisk II, or mini vMac. Alternatively (if the nature and quantity of your MacWrite docs allow), you could ask someone with the right hardware/software to do the conversion for you. Those old files can't be very big, but if they're too much for email, you can always use a service like MediaFire. Remember that, to transfer 'classic' Mac files safely, it's best first to archive them with StuffIt (.sit) and then BinHex them (.hqx).

  • Formatting HD to run system 7 or just buy a vintage mac?

my niece has a bunch of games from her childhood that she would love to have again but they obviously don't work with leopard. i was thinking i could format a hard drive and load system 7 on it, but i'm not sure if there are other factors i'm not thinking of, hardware issues. i'm not sure how to get around the floppy issue, for one, but there may be video components that are different and might render the game useless, no? would it be better to just buy an old mac LC or something?
    thanks!
    mary

    Mary,
You want to emulate / run System 7 on your Mac Pro ? or on some other, as yet unnamed, Mac ?
There's some choice in a System 6 or System 7 emulator.
mini vMac, or Basillisk II. Use google to find them.
mini vMac will emulate an old compact black and white Mac with a motorola 680x0 processor, like the Mac Plus, or SE.
Basillisk II will emulate a black and white, or colour Mac with a motorola 680x0 processor, like the LC, LC II, Mac II, etc, up to a Quadra.
It all depends on the games you want to play, ie. compatible with System 1 to System 7.1 (mini vMac) or System 7.1 to System 7.5.5 (Basillisk II).
Or you could pick up an old Mac for $10.

  • Programming in system 6.0.8

I got an old macintosh plus, and there is not much I can do with it at to moment. Also, it doesn't work . So, as an alternitive, I have been using Mini vMac (is it true that downloading a ROM is illeagal?) and I was looking to write some simple programms. Does anyone know any way to do this? I was thinking finding a disk image of applescript, but it looks like it came out recently and never worked on a Macintosh or vMac.
    -redblock

I found this site thats called the mini vmac applications site, and there was a disk image (among thousands of others) that said in the contents collum: blah, blah, MacPascal, blah. so I downloaded it, and shure enough, there was a MacPascal program in there. however, I have no idea how to do anything in pascal (I did get a basic hello world program running). Here is the link for the vmac apps site:
    https://sites.google.com/site/sheepmyshaver123/download-applications
p.s I think it was intended fr people who wanted to know how to program in pascal, not to write programms in it, because there is a window for the main code, and two smaller ones for text output and graphics output that pop up when MacPascal is luanched.

  • System 7 software on a new mac

has anyone run "delux music construction" or system 5-7 on a new mac?
    wwhat about symulators/emulators for such?
i'd love to access my 200 or so old music compositions w/ my imac g5...
    thanks,
    -j

Of course, there is no way you are going to boot up a new machine in any Mac OS other than OSX. This leaves you with three options: 1) find a program that you CAN run on your new machine that can read your old files and translate them; 2) run an emulation program on your new machine that will run your old program inside a window in the new OS; or 3) acquire an old machine that will run your software, translate your files into something that you can run on the new machine, and transfer the files.
For option 1, it depends on what format they are in now, and whether there are any modern programs that can read them. Look for sound programs and then check their specs.
For option 2, there are a couple of Mac emulators you can find through Version Tracker (www.versiontracker.com) such as "Mini vMac" or "Basilisk" which may or may not work for you. Always worth a shot.
For option 3, you can find older Macs on eBay or sites such as 'www.lowendmac.com' (check tech articles for machine compatibility for OS 8–9 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25114) and System 7 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=8970). All of the really early Macs should run Systems 5–6).
Also note that pre-OS9 discussions can be found here: discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=102
    Hope that helps,

  • Upgrade to system 7.5

I have got system 7.0.1 installed using Mini vMac. How do I upgrade it to system 7.5? Thanks.
    Gadgetmo, macmood.blogspot.com

You can download for free at this link.
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html
Here's what the Read Me file says.
    Name: System 7.5 Version 7.5.3
    Released: January 30, 1999
    Requires:
System 7.5.3 requires an Apple Macintosh or PowerBook computer with at
least 4MB of RAM. Note: newer Macintosh and PowerBook computers
require versions of System software higher than version 7.5.3 in order
to operate. See TIL article 8970 for information on which CPUs support
    System 7.5.3.
    Description:
This is the North American English version of System 7.5 version
7.5.3, which includes the following system updates: System 7.5 Update
2.0 and System 7.5.3 Revision 2. For further information on System
7.5.3, please consult the Technical Information Library.
    Instructions:
This software is available as 19 parts of a self-mounting Disk Copy
image. Download all 19 parts to your hard drive and then double-click
on the first part to mount the compressed disk image on your desktop.
Note that self-mounting Disk Images require Mac OS version 7.0.1 or
later. If you are using a version of Mac OS prior to this, you can
download the System 7.5 Network Access floppy disk and boot your
Macintosh from that to use this software.

  • Can't open Error '' Not Supported on This system"

I downloaded a game i think it was made for Mac OS 7,8-9 Not Sure. My friend had it on his Mac Laptop the one made of plastic and coloured.
Anyway, how do i open it. Under Mac OS 9?
    Thanks.

There are a couple of emulators if your willing to make the effort:
    SheepShaver
    Mini vMac
You'll find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Can I get my new iMac to run ancient applications?

I just bought a new iMac (OS 10.5.2), which doesn't support older "Classic 9" apps that ran fine on my eMac (OS 10.3.9).
Is there any sort of download that might make these older applications functional?
    Thanks,
    Carl

There are some options. First is SheepShaver, and the second is Mini vMac Full Edition. Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • TS1368 I'm getting an error code -1202 and can't see itunes store

Although I do have an internet connection, when I go to my itunes store, it looks like it connect but then the sceen is completely blank,
I also see that I get a connect process request due to a -1202 error,

You are trying to run something that is no longer supported in OS X. There is no Classic support in Snow Leopard.
You might try one of the emulators such as Mini vMac 3.3.2

  • Where can I buy the original 1990 Photoshop 1.0 version

I'm not sure where the appropriate place to post this is, but this seemed like the most logical place. I teach a photo/video class at my school and would like to be able to run the original 1990 version of Photoshop 1.0 - mainly for comparison purposes and to show the students how far we've come.
I have an old Macintosh II that would run the software, but can't find the software disks for sale anywhere, including ebay or amazon.
I understand that the source code is available for download, which is fantastic. However, I am not familiar with compiling source code, so I'm not sure i'd have much luck gettin it up and running. Any help locating the install disks is appreciated!
    Thanks!!

Saxman: No, running Photoshop 1 is actually very, very simple. When you download that file, and unzip it, you can run the Mini vMac emulator on Windows, Mac, and Linux by running the Mini vMac application:
As you can tell, I have Photoshop v1 running on both Windows and MacOs Mountain. You may want to download the newest vMac emulator here:
    http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/doc/download.html#x86-64
and copy it to that unzipped folder.
When you share this zip file with your students they can test Photoshop 1 for themselves. It also comes with prehistoric versions of Illustrator, Freehand, PageMaker, and so on.
An emulator is sort-of a virtual machine as well. What Jeff is describing is running a complete virtual machine of a more modern mac installation, and then installing a second virtual classic. That's in this case overkill, and not at all necessary! :-)
This is a black & white 512x384 Classic Mac with System 7.5.3 - Extremely Retro! I have shown it myself to students for a laugh.

  • Trouble installing a game...

Hi I am a new mac user and do not completely understand how the system works yet, but I am hoping that somebody could help me out here. I am trying to install Starcraft on my computer. I insert the disc, click "install" but it brings up a window that says "You can't open the application because the classic environment is no longer supported." Is there something I need to do in order to make this work? Perhaps my system is too modern?
Help would be appreciated, I'm no good with computers. Thanks.

There is a Mac OS emulator called SheepShaver that you could try - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - but it is fairly complex to set up and requires a ROM image from an older model Mac such as a Mac 512, SE, etc. It is not known to be very stable.
Another is Mini vMac which emulates a Mac Plus. Not sure what version of Mac OS it requires nor if Starcraft would run in the emulator. Many games such as Starcraft may use undocumented hardware calls that simply don't work with emulators.

  • Iphoto crashing after using mini-dvi to video adapter

Hi, IPhoto on my Macbook is crashing. I can open it, then as soon as I scroll down it locks up and I have to force quit.
This started happening right after I used a Mini-DVI to Video Adapter cable to hook my macbook up to my TV. The adapter/s-video connection worked and I was able to see the video on the tv. But iphoto immediately locked up the computer when I went to slide show and now it locks every time I open it.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you:)
    Dorothy

It means that the issue resides in your existing Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
